Brad closed the door slowly as Sue left home to visit her mother. Expecting
a whole day to relax, he was thinking whether to read the newspaper or watch his
favorite TV talk show on his first day off in months. “This will be like a walk in
the park,” he’d told his wife. “I’ll look after
26
, and you can go to visit your
mom.”
Things started well, but just after eight o’clock, his three little “good kids” —
Mike, Randy, and Alex—came down the stairs in their night clothes and shouted “Breakfast, daddy.” When
27
had not appeared within thirty seconds, Randy began using his spoon on Alex’s head as if it were a
drum. Alex started to shout loudly in time to the beat (节拍). Mike chanted “Where’s my hot dog, where’s
my hot dog.” in the background. Brad
28
his newspaper would have to wait for a few seconds.
Life became worse after breakfast. Mike wore Randy’s trousers on his head. Randy locked himself in the
bathroom, while Alex
29
again because he was going to wet his short pants (短裤). Nobody could find

over and reading would be impossible.
At exactly 11:17, Brad called the daycare centre (日托所). “I suddenly have to go into work and my

五、阅读理解
A
Have you ever heard the saying “Don’t rest on your laurels”? “Laurels” means the achievements (业
绩) you have already got. The saying suggests that you shouldn’t be so satisfied with your achievements
that you’ll no longer try to improve.
As to this saying, Mike Perham has set (树立) us a good example. Mike Perham was born in 1992 in
Hertfordshire, England. Mike started sailing (航行) at the age of seven. When he was 14 years old, he
sailed across the Atlantic Ocean, he became the youngest person to sail across the Atlantic Ocean. You
might think the achievements are good enough, but Mike doesn’t think so. At the age of 17, he became the
youngest person to sail all by himself around the world on a nine-month voyage (航海).
Mike is now 19, and he is still trying his best to break the records and push himself further. For his next
dream, he plans to fly around the world on his own, making him the first person of all ages to both sail and
fly around the world.
Mike wants his achievements to encourage young people to realize their dreams. Since his adventures, he
has travelled widely, and he gives speeches at schools and youth (青年) clubs in the UK, Hong Kong and
Australia on the theme (主题) of “Live the Dream”.
36. Where was Mike born?
A. In America.
B. In England.
C. In Hong Kong. D. In Australia.
37. When did Mike sail across the Atlantic Ocean?
A. At the age of 14.

10
C. At the age of 19.

38. What’s Mike’s new dream?
A. He plans to fly around the world.
B. He wants to fly to the Atlantic Ocean.
C. He plans to give speeches at schools.
D. He wants to join youth clubs.
39. What did Mike encourage young man to do?
A. To travel in the world.

C. To realize their dreams.
D. To set others a good example.

Owning Books
We enjoy reading books that belong to us much more than if they are borrowed. A borrowed book is
like a guest in the house; it must be treated with punctiliousness, with enough careful attention. You must
see that it keeps no dirty or destroyed pages.
But books are for use, not for show; you should own no book that you are afraid to mark up, or afraid
to place on the table, wide open and face down. A good reason for marking favorite passages in books is
that this practice enables you to remember more easily the important sayings, to refer to them quickly, and
then in later years, it is like visiting a forest where you once walked in.
Everyone should begin collecting a private library in youth; this habit can here be developed with
every advantage. The best wallpaper is books; they are more varied in color and appearance than any
wallpaper, they are more attractive in design, and if you sit alone in the room in the firelight, you are
surrounded ( 包围) with close friends. The knowledge that they are there in common thought is both
encouraging and refreshing. Books are of the people, by the people, for the people. They are part of history;
the best part of personality.
Book – friends have this advantage over living friends; you can enjoy the most truly great society in
the world whenever you want it. The great dead are beyond our physical ( 身体的) reach, and the great
living are usually almost as too far to reach. But in a private library, you can at any moment talk with
Shakespeare or Carlyle or Dumas or Dickens. And there is no doubt that in these books you see these men
at their best. They “laid themselves out” they did their best to entertain (娱乐) you, to make a favorable
impression. You are necessary to them as an audience is to an actor; only instead of seeing them masked,
you look into their inside heart of heart.
40. The underlined word punctiliousness refers to __________.
A. expectation
B. admiration
C. great care
D. nice view
41. The writer’s attitude towards books is like _________.
A. walking into an old forest
B. treating a guest in the house
C. showing out a private library
11
D. talking to great dead and living
42. The best wallpaper, according to writer, is _______ .
A. colors B. books C. library
D. friends
43. Shakespeare is mentioned here to show it’s ______ to talk to the great people through books.
