How often do you use social networking apps?
Why do you use social networking apps?
Do you think it is good to make friends online?

People often use the terms Internet and web interchangeably (交替使用), but they
are actually two different things. The Internet is an enormous (巨大的) global network
of billions of servers, computers, and other hardware devices. The web, which is short
for World Wide Web, is one of the ways information is shared on the Internet.
The development of the World Wide Web was begun in 1989 by Tim Berners-Lee
and his colleagues. He gained valuable experience as he networked computers and
built a prototype that would help researchers share and update information. Their text-
based Web browser was made available for general release in January 1992.

Birth of the Internet
(A) It’s difficult to imagine our life without the Internet. We find facts, recipes, and
information online. We share our lives through social media and instant
messaging. Reading, research, and studying all take place on this worldwide
network. Only a short while ago, all of this was just a figment of our imagination
(凭空想象的事). Let’s read about how the Internet got its start.
(B) The beginning of the personal computer is the beginning of what we now
know as the Internet. In the 1950s, developers in countries such as France, the
United Kingdom, and the United States started to talk about the possibility of
joining computing devices together into networks. These connected computers
would be able to communicate with one another.
(C) By the 1960s, networks* of networked* computers started to become a
reality. Research and educational organizations began to share information and
work together through these early networks. The year 1989 finally saw private
and commercial organizations join this global networking setup, at least in the
United States.
(D) British computer scientist Tim Berners-Lee is well-known for his contributions
to the modern Internet. In the 1980s, he participated in research in Switzerland
that led to the beginning of the World Wide Web. Documents were linked to a
computerized system that could be widely accessed.
(E) The 1990s saw a huge jump in the growth of the Internet and its availability
to the masses (大众). Internet service providers were formed and connections to
the Internet from private homes became more and more common. Soon, most
companies and even many private citizens in the US had their own websites.
Students would instant message* one another after class, while browsing (浏览)
simple websites to get the latest news. Social networks and online shopping
grew in popularity. Before long, the Internet became what it is today, a
ubiquitous (普遍存在的) presence which changed how we all live.
(F) With its humble beginnings not so far behind it, the Internet continues to
morph and change as it is adapted to consumers’ needs and desires. From a
few linked computers in the 1950s and 60s, the Internet has become a
necessary part of our modern lives.

When it comes to the Internet, passwords which people often use are under fire. ___1___
Research has shown that passwords are not a very good way to protect sensitive information.
People would use some random characters, numbers and symbols. Furthermore, a unique
password would be used for every site or application the user uses. Unfortunately, the more
complex they become, the more people are likely to forget their passwords. The longer the
passwords are, the more easily forgotten they are. ___2___
Google is trying to kill off the password on Android devices by introducing the Trust API, which
does what simple passwords cannot.
