Jeanne Calment lives in a small old people's home in the south of France; her husband, her only child
and her grandson have all died. She is nearly blind and deaf and is always in a wheelchair, but her doctor
describes her as being more like a 90-year-old woman in good health than someone of 120. She still has a
lively sense of humor. When asked on her 120th birthday what she expected of the future, she replied: A very
short one. She also remarked that she thought the good Lord had forgotten all about her. So what is the key
to a long life? According to some doctors, diet, exercise and no smoking are three important factors. Jeanne
Calment has followed two of the tips. She has always eaten a healthy diet, and she used to do exercise every
day until she broke her leg at the age of 115. However, until recently she drank two glasses of strong red wine
a day, and she does smoke (now only a little). Besides, Jeanne Calment might have got very good genes from
her parents. Her father lived to the age of 94 and her mother to 86.
A local lawyer bought her house when she was 80 under an agreement that he would pay her some money
every year until her death. It must have seemed a good move at the time, but so far the lawyer has paid her at
least three times the value of the house. Every year on her birthday, Jeanne Calment sends him a card saying:
Sorry, I'm still alive!
1 How does Jeanne Calment feel about her old age?
A. She is miserable and unhappy.
B. She feels she is going to die very soon.
C. She would like to live much younger.
D. She is cheerful and humorous.
2 Which of the following word could best replace the underlined word "move" in the fourth paragraph?
A. Trick
B. Deal
C. March
D. Sport
3 Why does Jeanne Calment say "Sorry, I'm still alive" to the lawyer every year on her birthday?
A. Because the lawyer has paid her much more money than the value of the house.
B. Because she has asked the lawyer to pay her more rent than they first agreed.
C. Because she had an agreement at 80 with the lawyer which was to her advantage.
D. Because the house she sold to the lawyer is worth the money he has already paid.

The Internet plays a big part in human life. We use it for work and pleasure. We use it to learn a new
language. We find advice on it. We use it to connect with family and friends. We use it to stay in touch with
events we care about. The list goes on and on.
As far as the Internet being a part of our lives. Well, that train has left the station. This expression
means there is no going back to an Internet-free life. But can using the Internet too much be bad for our
health? It might be, say researchers. A new study finds that heavy Internet use may be connected to high
blood pressure (血压) in a young group: teenagers.
The study results show that teens who spend at least 14 hours a week online may cause high blood
pressure, which makes your heart and blood vessels (血管) work too hard. Over time, this extra pressure
increases your risk of a heart attack. High blood pressure can also cause heart and other diseases.
The Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Michigan did the study. 335 young people, from 14 to 17 years old,
took part in it. 134 of the teens were described as "heavy Internet users". And researchers found that out of
these 134 teens, 26 had high blood pressure. The researchers say the study is the first to connect heavy web
use with high blood pressure.
The lead researcher is Andrea Cassidy-Bushrow. She said, "Using the Internet is part of our daily life,
but it shouldn't ruin us." Ms. Cassidy-Bushrow adds that it is important for teens to take regular breaks from
their computers or smartphones and do some kind of physical activity. She also suggests that parents shouldn't
let their children use the Internet for more than two hours a day, five days a week.
1 What does the underlined sentence "that train has left the station." mean in paragraph 2?
A. The train has stopped at the wrong station.
B. There is something wrong with the station.
C. The train has changed its course.
D. Life without the Internet is nowhere to be found.

Many years ago my student asked me the question, "Mrs. Kindred, why do you teach?" Without taking
time to reflect, I answered, "Because someday I might say something that might make a difference in someone's
life." Even though I was sincere, that wasn't a very good answer and my student didn't let it slide.
"Let me get this straight," he said, "You went to college for four years so you could come here every day
because you have the hope that someday you might say something that will influence someone?" He shook his
head as if I were crazy and walked away looking confused. I'm one of those people who look back and wish
they had said something smart or witty, or swift.

Even though that particular student might no longer wonder why I teach, there are days when I wonder.
On those days, I remind myself of the real reasons I teach。
It's in my blood. My mother was my most influential teacher, and she was a 6th grade reading teacher
until her death in 1990. She instilled (逐渐灌输) in me a love of reading and the knowledge that education
opens doors.
Teaching is a way to make a difference. If you throw a stone in a pond the ripples go on and on until
they reach the shore. You can't have ripples without a "stone." Good teachers throw stones that make a positive
difference, and that's what I strive to do.
I genuinely love teenagers.
I want to share with others what I know and what I have learned through the years. Life is full of ups
and downs, and if I can help students avoid some potholes on the road of life, I want to do so. If they'll allow
me to celebrate their victories with them, I want to do too.
Teaching isn't for everyone, but I know I made the right career choice.

D. Because the answer was difficult to understand.
2 What do you think of the writer?

A. The writer's mother has the greatest influence on her.
B. The writer's answer made the student confused.
C. In the writer's opinion, some people in the world are unfit to teach.
D. The writer annoyed the student who asked the question.
4 What's the main idea of the text?

The old camera Brownie picked up in a charity shop was a splendid find. But the undeveloped film still
inside turned out to be even more of a treasure.
New owner Don Roccoforte had it developed and saw in it an attractive dark haired woman in her thirties
with two young boys. He immediately determined to try to find out who they were.
A few weeks later the California-based camera collector received the news that left him stunned. The
woman was his wife Jaqueline's aunt in a picture taken around 50 years ago, and one of the boys, her cousin.
The couple have now unraveled (揭开) the astonishing coincidence, which leads back to Mrs. Rocco-
forte's native Lancashire, where many of her family still live. The camera was bought from a shop in Preston,
England by Brownie, a friend of Mr. Roccoforte, who knew of his interest in photography and thought it would
be an unusual gift.
Back in California, the contents of his new possession inspired Mr. Roccoforte's curiosity. Recognizing
the water in the background of the photo as a lake in Lancashire, he sent a copy to the local paper in Preston
to see if any readers could help.
Another relative recognized the group as Winnie Bamber, still living in the area at the age of 81, her son
Tony, Mrs. Roccoforte's cousin, and Tony's childhood friend, Mick Murphy.
Yesterday Mrs. Bamber was still gasping (惊讶地吸气) at the turn of events which has reunited two
strands (分支) of her family. She said she remembered taking the boys to the lake and losing the camera. The
two boys, both now 58, still live near Preston.
Mrs. Roccoforte's father is Winnie Bamber's brother, Billy Charnley. He and his wife moved to America
in the 1960s. Their daughter met Mr. Roccoforte there and they married and moved to Preston for two years
before returning to America.

Do you like somewhere a little bit different to the usual types of places you find on the high street? I do,
so I'm glad to see new ones popping up (冒出) everywhere in London.
The so called pop-up shop is a temporary arrangement. In the aftermath (余波) of the financial crisis of
2008, many businesses had to shut down. Shops, warehouses and offices were left vacant when they stopped
trading. Pop-up enterprisers occupied some of them quickly. For them the appeal of this temporary shopping
concept is clear: they can start a business with much lower risk. The temporary nature of a pop-up shop gives
the opportunity to test a product and develop a customer base, without being tied into a long-term renting
contract. Being small makes it much easier for pop-ups to expand if they are successful.
Pop-up shops first appeared in the UK in the early 2000s, with the economy booming. They were orig-
inally a way for small companies to rent retail space (零售场所) in great locations. This was while landlords
who owned these spaces looked for permanent renters.
Pop-up shops can take a number of different forms. They might be temporary shops in the high street or
a shopping centre. They might be simple market stalls (摊位). They could be based in some kind of transport,
like a food truck. Or they could be run by people who visit different establishments, like travelling chefs who

二、阅读理解
Repeated cases of child abuse (虐待) in China have shocked the country. They also have led to more
protection of children's rights. But rights activists say the government and private groups need to do more
to help children in need. A small child protection service in Shanghai is trying to stop neglect and violence
against children.
Gege is seven years old. She has been homeless for almost half her life. Her mother suffers from a mental
condition. They lived on the streets in Shenzhen for more than three years. A man named Xiao Xudong learned
about Gege. He told her story to the local media (媒体) earlier this year. Government officials heard the story
and found help for Gege and her mother. The mother began to receive treatment for her mental problems. Gege
was sent to a centre for children who had lost both parents. She was later re-united with her father.
Her story has a happy ending. But social workers are not yet celebrating.
Xiao Xudong spoke on Skype: "We have many child protection organizations, but why do we still have
so many children being abused and neglected?"
Recently, Chinese newspapers and magazines reported on repeated cases of child abuse in the country.
The reports shocked many people and led the government to strengthen measures to protect children's rights.
Xie Chang'e is a lawyer. She offers legal assistance at a child protection service called Hope Home.
Ms. Xie said that China has laws to protect children's rights. But the laws are often unclear, she added, and
difficult to put into effect.
However, the government is starting to recognize the problems in the child welfare system. New rules
state that parents or legal guardians who sexually abuse, sell, abandon or violently hurt children will lose their
legal right to care for them.
Ms. Xie supports the new regulations. She says they are a good way to help protect children. But she
says police and other officials do not know about the regulations or do not always follow them. She also notes
that the new regulations have the force of law, but they have not yet been written into laws.
1 The example of Gege's life experience given in the third paragraph is to
.
A. show that child abuse has attracted the attention of society
B. indicate the seriousness of child abuse in China
C. prove that every abused child that receives help will have a happy ending
D. show that using the press is the best way to help abused children

A Beautiful Mind
A mathematician who goes mad is not a subject most directors consider commercially attractive, but then
Ron Howard isn't among most directors. Despite an impressive list of credits, A Beautiful Mind is his most
successful work to date, combining a psychological drama with a moving love story to produce a film that is as
interesting as it is entertaining.
The Oscar winning Russell Crowe has put himself in line for further honors with his acting John Nash,
the Nobel Prize-winning mathematician troubled by schizophrenia (精神分裂症). A Beautiful Mind pictures
Nash as an unusual hero, not just because of his academic achievements but also because of the courage he
displays while battling his illness.
In 1947, Nash was one of many great young minds at Princeton. "To find a truly original idea is the
only way to distinguish myself," the proud and determined student declared. His exploration of such an idea
afforded him little time for the normal socialising. His shyness and straightforward approach brought him few
friends.
After finally hitting on a revolutionary new idea, Nash's career took off and his reputation was secured. He
balanced research work with teaching, which is where he met the bright and beautiful student Alicia (Jennifer
Connelly). Things in his life were going well when his talent for code breaking brought him to the attention of
the military who employed him during the early stages of the Cold War with Russia. However, the stress of his
work made Nash's illness develop.
Crowe's performance is perfect. He and Connelly ignite (make something exciting) the film's passionate
love story and Connelly's wonderful performance makes the audience moved by Alicia, whose courage, strength
and faith in her husband are the primary reasons for his recovery.
