The Netherlands is constitutional monarchy (君主立宪国) with monarch as the
official head of state, though his/her powers are almost purely ceremonial (形式上
的) nowadays. The political system behind this small but thriving nation is
parliamentary (议会的) democracy, characterized by a system where different
political parties form a coalition (联合体) to achieve a majority. Had the country not
chosen to adopt this system, it would have become very difficult to govern the
country with so many different parties. What also characterizes the political system
of the Netherlands is its focus on achieving broad consensus (共识) when taking
decisions. Rarely have decisions been pushed when it was known that strong
disagreement from smaller parties existed.

George Washington: an inspirational man
(A)What does a man have to do in order to have his country decide to name
its capital and an entire state after him? Quite a lot, actually. And to
summarize George Washington’s numerous achievements is a real
challenge. Not only was he a brave, strategic military captain who played
a pivotal role in the American War of Independence, he was also an
example to others when he ordered his estate’s(庄园)slaves to be set
free after his death. What's more, he served as the first president of the
United States, from 1789 to 1797.
(B)An exceptional leader, Washington fulfilled several crucial functions in
the war, including the participation in many battles as a general, as well as
a strategist working behind the scenes. Washington was responsible for
planning the provision of food and supplies to his troops, while practically
single-handedly (独立地) planning his army's strategies. Most importantly,
never did he lose heart, not even after losing many battles. Instead, his
gaze (目光) consistently remained focused on achieving independence.
(A)Politically speaking, Washington also played a very important part in the
adoption(选定)and ratification (批准) of the first Constitution(宪法). After
he was elected president of the United States, it‘s said that he governed with
a calm demeanor (态度), which helped solve the disagreements between
cabinet(内阁) members Thomas Jefferson and Alexander Hamilton.
(B)Meanwhile*, Washington was known as a family man. Even though he never
had children of his own, he was a loving stepfather to his wife‘s children from
a previous marriage He loved horseback riding, hunting, dancing, and the
theatre. Business-wise (商业方面), he was planter who managed a thriving
estate and plantations which brought him and his family an excellent income,
though his spending was excessive at times. The plantation he inherited
came with slaves, though he became increasingly uncomfortable with the idea
of slavery. which was a normal part of American life at that time. Upon his
death however, he ordered that the slaves working on his plantation be freed.
(C)Should there be any doubts about why Washington is still held in such high
esteem, researching his life story will certainly take them away. Indeed, he
still remains an inspiration to many people-in the US and around the world.

America is growing older. Fifty years ago, only 4 out of every 100 people in the
United States were 65 or older. Today, 10 out of every 100 Americans are over 65.
The __________ (age) of the population will affect American society in many ways —
— education, medicine, __________ business. Quietly, the graying of America has
made us a very different society — one in which people have a quite different idea of
__________ kind of behavior is suitable at various ages. A person's age no longer
tells you anything about his/her position, __________ (marry) or health. There's no
longer a particular year __________ one goes to school or goes to work or gets
married or starts a family. The social clock that __________ (keep) us on time and told
us when to go to school, get a job, or stop working isn't as strong as __________
used to be. It doesn't surprise us to hear of a 25-year-old university president or a 35-
year- old grandmother, or __________ 80-year-old man who has become a father for
the first time. Public ideas are changing. Many people say, “I am much __________
(young) than my mother or my father was at my age.” No one says “Act your age” any
more. We've stopped __________ (look) with surprise at older people who act in
youthful ways.
