Brainstorm
How do you feel in high school?
Brainstorm
What do you think you would be doing
in an American high school?
Playing music
and
gossiping?
Starting high school means changes in your life. Most teenagers look forward to the
first day of high school, but still feel a little bit nervous. Things can be rather
challenging, but you can follow these tips to make your new life easier.
Take part in some activities that are held at the school for new students to know the
school better. Carefully look over all the materials you receive. Get the things you will
need for class. Keep up with your high school study. If you find you’re not doing well in
a subject, make use of after-school study groups or ask your teacher to help you with
your schoolwork. Consider private tutoring to get you through a difficult time.
There are more extracurricular (课外的) activities in high school than in middle
school, such as clubs, music and theater groups, student government, and sports
teams. Join a club or other organizations to meet people and develop friendships. This
is a good time to do what you like doing and an opportunity to try new things. Who
says school has to be all work and no play? Since you're attending more activities in
high school than in middle school, you’ll have to learn to manage your time.
Skimming
A. for use by one person or group, not for everyone

Life as an American high school student
(A) For most American students, the day starts early in the morning, sometimes
even before the sun rises. They stumble (蹒跚而行) into the shower, grab
something to wear from the closet, before quickly eating a bowl of cereal. Older
kids may have cars already, and can drive to school on their own. Otherwise,
carpools (拼车) and public school buses are popular ways to arrive to class in
the morning.
(B) Once at school, kids separate into their own social groups. Gossiping and
laughing continue until the bell rings, which lets everyone know that it’s time to
go to class. Normally, the first class is a homeroom ( 集合时间), where
attendance is taken.
(C) Students soon settle into their routines. Each class is about an hour long, so
most students have six classes a day. Studies include history, mathematics,
English, science, and electives like art or a foreign language.
(D) Many high school students are already thinking about their college transcripts. They
take advanced courses and participate in sports and other extracurricular activities to get
a well-rounded education. Others enroll in technical schools, where about half of the
day is spent training for careers in areas such as catering (饮食服务), mechanics (机械工
程) or beauty.
(E) Regardless of future plans, the school day for most American high school students
ends around 2 pm. Those who participate in sports will generally stay at school to practice
with their team.
(F) After getting home around 4 or 5 pm, most students eat and watch TV to relax after
class. They may spend an hour or two doing homework, doing research online, or
studying, depending on the classes that they have chosen to take. Many students are
expected to help out around the house with chores like washing the dishes or tidying up.
(G) Today’s modern teenagers have social lives as well. It’s common to see them on the
couch with their smartphone, talking with friends and making plans for the next day.
Romantic relationships are common at this age too, with many high school students
having a boyfriend or girlfriend. It’s all part of the life of an American high school student!

① Humans produce more than 300 million tons of plastic every year. Almost half of
that winds up in landfills (垃圾填埋场), and up to 12 million tons pollute the oceans.
So far there is no effective way to get rid of it, but a new study suggests an answer
may lie in the stomachs of some hungry worms.
② Researchers in Spain and England recently found that the worms of the greater
wax moth can break down polyethylene, which accounts for 40% of plastics. The
team left 100 wax worms on a commercial polyethylene shopping bag for 12 hours,
and the worms consumed and broke down about 92 milligrams, or almost 3% of it. To
confirm that the worms’ chewing alone was not responsible for the polyethylene
breakdown, the researchers made some worms into paste (糊状物) and applied it to
plastic films. 14 hours later the films had lost 13% of their mass—apparently broken
down by enzymes (酶) from the worms’ stomachs. Their findings were published in
Current Biology in 2017.
综合训练
③ Federica Bertocchini, co-author of the study, says the worms' ability to break down
their everyday food—beeswax—also allows them to break down plastic. “Wax is a
complex mixture, but the basic bond in polyethylene, the carbon-carbon bond, is there
as well,” she explains, “The wax worm evolved a method or system to break this bond.”
④ Jennifer DeBruyn, a microbiologist at the University of Tennessee, who was not
involved in the study, says it is not surprising that such worms can break down
polyethylene. But compared with previous studies, she finds the speed of breaking
down in this one exciting. The next step, DeBruyn says, will be to identify the cause of
the breakdown. Is it an enzyme produced by the worm itself or by its gut microbes (肠
道微生物)?
⑤ Bertocchini agrees and hopes her team's findings might one day help employ the
enzyme to break down plastics in landfills. But she expects using the chemical in
some kind of industrial process—not simply “millions of worms thrown on top of the
plastic.”
综合训练
1. What can we learn about the worms in the study?
A. They take plastics as their everyday food.
B. They are newly evolved creatures.
C. They can consume plastics.
D. They wind up in landfills.
2. According to Jennifer DeBruyn, the next step of the study is to ____.
A. identify other means of the breakdown
B. find out the source of the enzyme
C. confirm the research findings
D. increase the breakdown speed

3. It can be inferred from the last paragraph that the chemical might ____.
A. help to raise worms
B. be used to clean the oceans
C. help make plastic bags
D. be produced in factories in future
4. What is the main purpose of the passage?
A. To explain a study method on worms.
B. To introduce the diet of a special worm.
C. To present a way to break down plastics.
D. To propose new means to keep eco-balance.
