Britain’s most popular newspapers
(A) Newspapers have a long and interesting history, but there’s perhaps one type of
newspaper that is the most notorious[nəʊˈtɔːriəs] (臭名昭著的) in the West: the British
tabloid[ˈtæblɔɪd] (小报).
(B) The word “tabloid” originates from the 19th century. Used to describe medicine in
easy-to-take tablet form, the term was later used to describe a new type of newspaper.
While

tabloids makes them easy to carry around and read.
(C) Meanwhile, the content of tabloids themselves could also be described as easy-to-
take. With most newspapers containing high-brow (高深的) journalism, tabloids are
known for their simplified versions of news stories, as well as celebrity gossip and
sensationalism[senˈseɪʃənəlɪzəm](哗众取宠).
(D) In Britain, some of the most popular tabloids include The Sun and the Daily Mirror.
These newspapers are also sometimes referred to as “red tops”, as their mastheads (刊

(E) Many of the stories in British tabloids are light-hearted (轻松的), featuring regular
people. Political news is often featured too, but in a more simplified form than broadsheets.
Stories about celebrities — particularly celebrity scandals (丑闻) — are also a trademark
of these newspapers.
(F) But what British tabloids are most famous for is their clever and witty headlines, which
are often based on puns. For example, a story about a man who was asked for his teeth to
be tested to prove his real age read “Tell us the tooth”. Meanwhile, another headline for a
story which criticized the European Union read “Who do EU think you are?”.
(G) Tabloids may not be known for featuring the most accurate or prestigious[preˈstɪdʒəs]
content, but they are the most-read newspapers in Britain. Perhaps in the same way that
movies such as the Marvel or Transformers series are generally more popular than
independent movies, most Britons prefer entertaining news over serious content.

① A good modern newspaper is an extraordinary piece of reading. It's great first for
what it contains: the range of news from local crime to international politics, from sports to
business, from fashion to science, and the range of comment and special feature as well,
from editorial page to feature articles and interviews to criticism of books, art theatre and
music.
② A newspaper is even greater for the way one reads it: never completely, never
straight through, but always by jumping from here to there, in and out, glancing at one
piece, reading another article all the way through, reading just a few paragraphs of the
text.
③ A good modern newspaper offers a variety (多样性) to attract many different readers,
but far more than the reader is interested in. What brings this variety together in one place
is its topicality (时事性), its immediate relation to what is happening in your world and your
locality now. But immediacy and the speed of production that goes with it also mean that
much of what appears in a newspaper has no more than transient (短暂的) value.
④ For all these reasons, no two people really read the same paper: what each person
does is to put together, out of the pages of that day's paper, his own selection and order,
his own newspaper. For all these reasons, reading newspapers efficiently, which means
getting what you want from them without missing things you need and without wasting
time, demands skill and self-awareness as you change and apply the techniques of
reading.
