一、阅读理解
It is reported that conservation (环保) groups in North America have been arguing about the benefits
and dangers of wolves. Some groups believe wolves should be killed. Other people believe wolves must be
protected so that they will not disappear from the wilderness (荒野).
For Killing Wolves
In Alaska, the wolves almost disappeared a few years ago, because hunters were killing hundreds of them
for sport. However, laws were passed to protect the wolves from sportsmen and people who catch the animals for
their fur. So the wolf population has greatly increased. Now there are so many wolves that they are destroying
their own food supply.
A wolf naturally eats animals in the deer family. People in the wilderness also hunt deer for food. Many
of the animals have been destroyed by the very cold winters recently and by changes in the wilderness plant
life. When the deer can't find enough food, they die.
If the wolves continue to kill large numbers of deer, their prey (猎物) will disappear some day. And the
wolves will, too. So we must change the cycle of life in the wilderness to balance the ecology (生态). If we
killed more wolves, we would save them and their prey from dying out. We'd also save some farm animals.
In another northern state, wolves attack cows and chickens for food. Farmers want the government to send
biologists to study the problem. They believe it necessary to kill wolves in some areas and to protect them in
places where there is a small wolf population.
Against Killing Wolves
If you had lived long ago, you would have heard many different stories about the dangerous wolf. According
to most stories, hungry wolves often kill people for food. Even today, the stories of the "big bad wolf" will not
disappear.
But the fact is wolves are afraid of people, and they seldom travel in areas where there is a human smell.
When wolves eat other animals, they usually kill the very young, or the sick and injured. The strongest survive.
No kind of animal would have survived through the centuries if the weak members had lived. And that has
always been a law of nature.
Although some people say it is good sense to kill wolves, we say it is nonsense! Researchers have found
wolves and their prey living in balance. The wolves keep the deer population from becoming too large, and
that keeps a balance in the wilderness plant life.
The real problem is that the areas where wolves can live are being used by people. Even if wilderness
2
【春】高一英语目标清北班(全国) 习题册
land is not used directly for human needs, the wolves can't always find enough food. So they travel to the
nearest source, which is often a farm. Then there is danger. The "big bad wolf" has arrived! And everyone
knows what happens next.
1 According to the passage, some people in North America favour killing wolves for all the following reasons
EXCEPT that
.
A. there are too many wolves
B. they kill large numbers of deer
C. they attack cows and chickens for food
D. they destroy the wilderness plant life
2 Some people are against killing wolves because
.
A. wolves help to keep the ecological balance in the wilderness
B. there is too small a wolf population in the wilderness
C. there are too many deer in the wilderness
D. wolves are afraid of people and never attack people
3 According to those against killing wolves, when wolves eat other animals,
.
A. they never eat strong and healthy ones
B. they always go against the law of nature
C. they might help this kind of animals survive in nature
D. they disturb the ecological balance in the wilderness
4 The last sentence "And everyone knows what happens next" implies that in such cases
.
A. farm animals will be in danger and have to be moved away
B. wolves will kill people and people will in turn kill them
C. wolves will find enough food sources on farms
D. people will leave the areas where wolves can live

一、阅读理解
Not all vegetables need lots of sunshine. Mark Hoffman and his wife own a bed-and-breakfast guesthouse
in rural Kempton, Illinois. They often serve their guests fresh products from the garden.
The Hoffmans have been growing food and flowers for twenty-five years. For almost ten of those years,
Mr. Hoffman has been experimenting and working with shade (阴凉) plantings. He says, "The bottom line
here is that most plants will produce more in full sun. But if you do not have full sun, there are other choices."
For example, he grows tomatoes near oak trees. Oak trees can produce a lot of shade. But Mr. Hoffman
says his tomato plants grow as long as they get five hours' direct sunshine a day, especially morning sun. Not
only does this go against the traditional advice that tomatoes need six, eight, even twelve hours' full sun a day.
It also shows how plants and tree roots can share nutrients and water.
Mr. Hoffman says plants with wider leaves seem to do better in shady environments. He also found that
his potatoes did better partly in shade than in full sun.
Moving them out of the sun helped control an insect problem. Mr. Hoffman does not use pesticide (农药).
Instead, he planted the potatoes in the shade, especially on the east side of the tree. The potatoes get morning
sun, but they are shaded during the hottest part of the day. Some insects dislike shade, and the hottest part
day is when they do the worst of their damage.
Time of day, sun intensity (强度), shadows from trees, walls and buildings all influence how much sun-
light falls on plants. And people interested in shade planting should also remember something else. The term
"shade" can describe different amounts of darkness. It can even mean different things in different parts of the
world.
1 How many hours of sunshine are enough to keep tomato plants growing in Hoffman's garden?
A. Five hours a day
B. Six hours a day
C. Eight hours a day
D. Twelve hours a day

Keeping a diary in English is one of the effective ways to improve our English writing ability.
Compared with other forms of writing, it is shorter and takes 1 (little) time. It can help us to
develop the habit of thinking in English. If we persist in this practice, gradually we'll learn how 2
(express) ourselves in English. In keeping a diary in English, we certainly run up against many 3
(difficult). In the first place, it often happens that we have trouble in 4 (find) appropriate words
and phrases to give expression to our mind. Secondly, there 5 (be) many idiomatic ways of saying
things in Chinese. And it is extremely hard for us to put them into English 6 (proper).
As far as I am 7 (concern), my suggestion is 8 we should always have a notebook
and a Chinese-English dictionary within easy reach. Whenever something beats us, we can first put it down
in our notebook and then consult our dictionary. We can also ask our English teacher 9 help, if
necessary. In short, I believe that it is of great use to keep a diary in English for 10 development
of our writing skills.

一、阅读理解
Jeanne Calment, a French woman, became a record breaker on 17 October, 1995, when at the age of 120
years and 238 days, she became the longest-lived human being on record. A Japanese man died in 1986 at
the age of 120 years and 237 days.
Jeanne Calment lives in a small old people's home in the south of France; her husband, her only child
and her grandson have all died. She is nearly blind and deaf and is always in a wheelchair, but her doctor
describes her as being more like a 90-year-old woman in good health than someone of 120. She still has a
lively sense of humor. When asked on her 120th birthday what she expected of the future, she replied: A very
short one. She also remarked that she thought the good Lord had forgotten all about her.
So what is the key to a long life? According to some doctors, diet, exercise and no smoking are the three
important factors. Jeanne Calment has followed two of the tips. She has always eaten a healthy diet, and she
used to do exercise every day until she broke her leg at the age of 115. However, until recently she drank two
glasses of strong red wine a day, and she does smoke (now only a little). Besides, Jeanne Calment might have
got very good genes from her parents. Her father lived to the age of 94 and her mother to 86.
A local lawyer bought her house when she was 80 under an agreement that he would pay her some money
every year until her death. It must have seemed a good move at the time, but so far the lawyer has paid her at
least three times the value of the house. Every year on her birthday, Jeanne Calment sends him a card saying:
Sorry, I'm still alive!
1 How does Jeanne Calment feel about her old age?
A. She is miserable and unhappy.
B. She feels she is going to die very soon.
C. She would like to live much younger.
D. She is cheerful and humorous.
2 Which of the following word could best replace the word "move" in the fourth paragraph?
A. trick
B. deal
C. march
D. sport
8
【春】高一英语目标清北班(全国) 习题册
3 Why does Jeanne Calment say "Sorry, I'm still alive" to the lawyer every year on her birthday?
A. Because the lawyer has paid her much more money than the value of the house.
B. Because she has asked the lawyer to pay her more rent than they first agreed.
C. Because she had an agreement at 80 with the lawyer which was to her advantage.
D. Because the house she sold to the lawyer is worth the money he has already paid.

一、阅读理解
It was the first time that Benny had traveled on his own. As he stood with his luggage at the check-in
for the flight to Singapore, he felt very nervous.
"You'll be fine," said his dad. "Nothing ever happens on flights nowadays!"
Soon it was time to board the aircraft. Benny quickly found his seat and settled down next to an old lady.
They started chatting and the lady told him that her name was Mrs. Pang, and that she was on her way to
London to visit her son.
As the aircraft rushed down the runway, Benny could see that Mrs Pang was holding onto the chair in
front of her, and that she had her eyes shut tight. Although he felt rather anxious himself, he said, "Don't
worry, Mrs Pang! Nothing ever happens on flights nowadays!" Soon the plane was up in the sky and Benny
and his neighbor were enjoying their drinks and the meal which the cabin crew (服务人员) brought round.
Suddenly, the plane began to rock side to side. The meal trays (托盘) slid around on the little tables and
the "Fasten seat belts" sign came on. The pilot told everyone that they must stay in their seats.
Mrs Pang was holding onto something again — only this time it was Benny's hand she was holding!
"Don't worry, Mrs Pang," Benny began to say. But then he stopped. What could he say? He just patted
(拍) her hand and tried to look confident.
It took some time before the plane got back to good weather but eventually the passengers were told that
everything was back to normal. Benny started to watch a film and Mrs Pang seemed to go to sleep.
Suddenly, the plane rolled and without any warning, dropped down.
Many people cried out as their
belongings fell to the ground. Mrs Pang also gave a scream and held Benny tightly again — this time with two
hands! But the plane kept going. The pilot announced that it was just an air pocket (气穴) and there was no
danger.
As they landed at Singapore airport, Mrs. Pang turned to Benny and said, "Thank you very much for your
help, Benny. Now please remind me of what you said at first."
"Don't worry! Nothing ever happens on flights nowadays!" laughed Benny.

Beat Summer Learning Loss
Summer learning loss is a loss of knowledge and skills most commonly due to long breaks during the
summertime. Many teachers have certainly had the experience of taking the first month of school not only to
introduce his or her rules and procedures to the class but also to get the kids back“up to speed”with thinking,
remembering what they've learned and in many cases, reviewing previous content. 1 .

(2) Write!
Have children write letters to out-of-town friends and family, or write postcards while on vacation.
3 For children who are good at drawing or painting, parents may choose to create a family scrapbook
(剪贴簿) with words printed below pictures. Not only will parents keep this summer's memories, but children
will also continue to practice his or her writing skills!
(3) Do the Math!
4 have a yard sale, and put children in charge of the cash box; help younger ones organize
an orange juice stand (to practice salesmanship and making change). Or simply buy a set of inexpensive flash
cards to practice basic facts while waiting in line or on a long car ride. There are even a host of free online
games that will keep children's math skills sharp.
(4) "Homeschool" Children.
Keeping children's skills fresh doesn't have to cost a fortune: check out some workbooks and online
resources, and children can work through several exercises each day. Even as little as twenty minutes a day
can have amazing results. 5 For instance, children can learn something during a car ride, right
before bedtime, etc.
Of course, parents don't need to do all the steps here. Just following through with one or two of these
ways will be of great help.
A. Think of ways children can use math skills in daily activities:
B. A summer journal is another way to set down summer activities.
C. What's more, it's easy to work in a small block of time here and there.
D. Check out the following sources to find books that your child will want to dive into.
E. So it's not a good choice for parents to force children to spend their summertime learning knowledge.
F. Fortunately, there are some steps parents can try to help children both enjoy the summer and keep their
skills fresh.

Your car is a necessary part of your life. You use it every day. Of course, you want to hold on to it so
you make sure it has the latest alarm and immobilizer. But despite all these, cars like yours are still stolen
every day. In fact, in this country, one car is stolen almost every minute! And if your car is stolen, you only
have a 50:50 chance of seeing it again.
Each year, car crime costs nearly £3 billion. Of course, if you're insured, you won't lose out, or will you?
Firstly, you will have to pay extra insurance later on, and then you may not be offered the full amount by the
agent. You will probably have to hire a car and you will also lose the value of the contents and accessories
(配件) in the car.
Now comes the solution. An RAC Trackstar system, hidden in one of 47 possible secret locations in your
car, is the key of our system. If your car is stolen, radio signals are sent at twenty-second intervals from the
car to the RAC Trackstar National Control Center via a satellite network. Then a computer gives the vehicle's
exact location, speed and direction.
The RAC Trackstar National Control Center, which operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, will
immediately inform the police in the area where the car is located. Because the police receive information
every twenty seconds, they will always know the vehicle's location. Once the thief has been arrested, your car
will be returned to you.
RAC Trackstar is unique in being able to provide the National Control Center with details of the exact
location of your car, its speed and direction. And speed is the key to successful recovery of a stolen vehicle.
RAC Trackstar Control will immediately tell the police if you report your car stolen and under the 24-hour
Guardian Option. It will also tell you if your car has been stolen. RAC Trackstar's constant updates mean
the police are kept informed of the car's location. All these greatly improve your chances of seeing your car again.

A. hire a new car
B. pay more insurance

Airport Delays on the Rise
Delays cause extreme anger among travelers, and cost the country billions in lost productivity.
An FAA study listed eleven major problems and suggested eleven solutions. All problems are in air traffic
control. The various regions (地区) don't talk to each other enough. Each region operates differently and the
number of planes in so-called regional traffic is increasing.
In the first of eleven solutions, an FAA national center will take control from the regions during heavy
traffic or bad weather.
Jane Garvey of the FAA says, "The purpose of the command (指挥) center is to really make those decisions
that affect the system in total." Also, the FAA promises publicly again to upgrade its computers.
Michael Barr is a safety expert at the University of Southern California, "We've got fares that are reduced.
More people want to fly and we are actually filling the air of the United States with air traffic."
An example of this is that the San Francisco International Airport is growing fast as a world-wide gateway
and as a center to an expanded (扩展的) regional service.
Ron Wilson of the San Francisco International Airport says, "If we've got 16, 17, 18 aircraft, departing at
8 a.m., the guy that is on the 18th plane is going to be 40 minutes late."
Jane Garvey says, "It's important to note that flying is more popular. It's becoming a form of public
transportation for a number of people. That’s having an effect on the delay numbers as well."
Weather causes about 70% of delays. Then the FAA moves planes farther apart from five miles to as
much as 20 miles. The new rule may reduce that to 10 miles. But if the sky is already crowded, where do
those planes go?
A traveler says, "Naturally, I think the more space between planes, the safer for travelers."
The FAA calls it an improvement, not a final solution. The public say the major problems remain: too
many planes, too few controllers and too little modernization.
1 According to the FAA study, the biggest problem leading to airport delays lies in
.
A. the reduced plane fares
B. the expanded regional service
C. the poor air traffic control
D. the increasing passenger numbers

The Lantern Festival can be traced back to more than 2,000 years ago. At the beginning of the Eastern
Han Dynasty, Emperor Ming of Han was an advocate of Buddhism. He heard that lanterns 1 (light)

first lunar month. Therefore, he ordered that all the temples, households, and royal palaces light lanterns on
that evening. According to China's 3 (diversity) folk customs, people get together on the night of the

一、阅读理解
Now I know that we black people are much more likely to have high blood pressure and diabetes (糖尿
病) than white people. And they often lead to heart attacks and other untreated diseases. For example, black
people are three to four times more likely than white people to have high blood pressure and twice as likely as
the white population to die of a stroke (中风).
New research has found out the surprisingly high levels of salt in many of black people's favorite meals.
I stopped putting extra salt in my food at the table long ago and I try to cut down on the salt I use in cooking.
The recommended daily level of salt for adults is 6 grams. It is easy to see that if you avoid processed (加工
过的) foods and use salt in your cooking within the limit, you won't exceed the daily level.
The research showed how much salt there is in some foods that we buy from restaurants and takeaways.
An average salad with rice and peas has 6.2 grams of salt. This is more salt than you are supposed to eat for
the whole day.
A researcher talked about the importance of home cooking rather than take-outs. At home, he pointed
out, not only can you hold control of the salt shaker, but also you can create tasty food which is low on salt.
The researcher later provided curry goat and rice and peas. They were low on salt, but completely delicious.
I do not suppose Jamaicans are going to stop buying takeaways soon. But if you suffer from high blood
pressure, it is probably better not to buy them often.
1 The underlined word "they" in Paragraph 1 refers to
.
A. white people
B. black people
C. untreated diseases
D. high blood pressure and diabetes
2 What has the new research found out according to Paragraph 2?
A. Black people take in too much salt.
B. Black people's meals are very special.
C. Processed foods have too much salt in them.
D. 6 grams of salt per day is enough for an adult.
