WARM-UP
Can you tell the times they live in by their dressing styles?
1920s
1940s
1980s
    1. As Queen Victoria was one of Britain’s most admired monarchs, it was popular to
mirror her style and demeanor (举止). Appearing motherly and domesticated (居家的)
were two virtues which were revered (崇敬) in this period. ( )
    2. Thanks to stars like Marilyn Monroe and Bettie Page, curvy figures became all the
rage (风靡一时) in the 1950s. Women began to be more open about sharing their
beauty with others, and wearing make-up was no longer considered shameful. ( )
    3. Male beauty was worshipped over female beauty back then. It’s obvious by
looking at statues from this era that the ideal of beauty was a man with a muscled
body and handsome face. ( )

    a. Victorian England (1837 – 1901)
    b. Ancient Greece (800 B.C. – 500 B.C.)
    c. Hollywood’s “Golden Age” (1930s – 1950s)

Do you agree that anyone can be a symbol of beauty in today’s world?

The mother of ethical beauty
(A) Nowadays, ethical (合乎道德的) beauty products appeal to the growing number of
consumers who are concerned about how the products they use on their body are
made. However, one woman was selling ethical beauty products decades before they
became a fad.
(B) After opening a tiny store in the UK in 1974, little did Anita Roddick know that she
would soon change the beauty industry forever. Her store, the Body Shop, was an
instant hit. More stores soon opened across the UK, before the business expanded
worldwide just a few short years later. Among the countless beauty stores that already
existed around the world, the Body Shop stood out for several reasons.
(C) First, none of its products were tested on animals, making the Body Shop one of the
first companies to make such a commitment (承诺). Second, the products were made
from natural and organic ingredients (成分), which were sourced ethically. Third, the
Body Shop was a pioneer of anti-waste, insisting that customers returned their empty
jars and bottles to be re-filled instead of throwing them away.
(D) All of these policies made the Body Shop impressive enough. But what was
even more impressive was that Roddick put them into place almost 50 years
ago. This was decades before people had even heard terms like “organic”, “fair
trade”, or “locally sourced” used for beauty products.
(E) Sadly, Roddick passed away in 2007 at the age of just 64 after suffering a
brain hemorrhage (脑溢血). Just one year earlier, she caused controversy after
selling the Body Shop to French cosmetics giant (化妆品巨头) L’Oreal. Many
people believed that Roddick had “sold out”*, as L’Oreal was considered the
antithesis ( 对头) of the Body Shop and everything it stood for.
(F) However, true to her ethical beliefs, Roddick had one final trick up her sleeve
( 绝地反击). After accumulating a fortune of almost $62 million—including the
money she made from the L’Oreal sale— Roddick left every cent of it to charity.
(G) Roddick may no longer be with us, but her simple dream of making the world
a more ethical place still lives on.
