Brainstorm
Have you ever seen any celebrity in public?
Would you want to be a celebrity in the future?
Do you think we should protect famous people's
privacy?
(敲大写字母呦)
Social media platforms have paved
the way for contemporary celebrities,
such
as
live-streamers,
models,
bloggers, and influencers. Public
worship may help such stars make
more money, that’s why they would
like to draw the general public in to
take part in their lives. Some say it’s
a win-win situation since it satisfies
our need to pry into famous peoples’
lives, while others might hope that
it’s a fad (一时的狂热) that will soon
blow over.
1. What’s the meaning of “contemporary”?
A. belong to the present time
B. exist in the past

2. What’s the meaning of “pry into”?
A. try to keep away from people’s private
lives
B. try to find out something about
people’s private lives

Turning fame into art
(A) If you haven’t heard of Andy Warhol, at least some of his art pieces will
probably be familiar to you, since they’ve become symbols of contemporary art.
His colorful silk-screen portraits of famous people from US actress Marilyn
Monroe to UK rock star Mick Jagger are icons of the so-called pop art movement.
(B) US artist Warhol (1928-1978) developed an interest in drawing and art while
recovering from a serious illness as a child, which inspired him to attend design
school and pursue a career as an illustrator (插图画家). His first job was at
Glamour magazine, which was the perfect breeding ground for him to flex his
talents (发挥才能) as a visual artist. This was also where he saw first-hand the
world of celebrity, which he soon became obsessed with. His time at Glamour
really paved the way for his establishment of the concepts that would fall under
the new art movement known as pop art (波普艺术).

(C) The increased popularity of television in the US in the 1950s and 1960s
brought the concept of celebrity culture straight to people’s homes, creating a
new interest in celebrities’ private lives among the general public. This is why
some people say Warhol was in the right place at the right time, since much of his
art was focused on this newfound culture of celebrity worship (崇拜).
(D) His art studio, The Factory, was actually more like a night club, where famous
singers, actors, and other artists would gather to hang out, party and create art.
Warhol had a habit of taking Polaroid shots (拍立得照片) of every star he met,
many of which he later used to create his signature stylized portraits.
(E) The Factory and Warhol himself became famous too, not least because
Warhol was such a character himself, prone to (倾向于) making bold statements.
As if he had the ability to foresee the rise of social media and Internet stars, he
once said, “In the future, everyone will be world-famous for 15 minutes.”
(F) Doting on (过分喜爱) the rich and famous or wanting to become a celebrity
has certainly not gone out of style since Warhol’s days. He may no longer be
around, but his “15 minutes” will certainly not be over anytime soon.

Does fame drive you crazy?
① Although being famous might sound like a dream come true, today’s stars, feeling
like zoo animals, face pressures that few of us can imagine. They are at the center of
much of the world’s attention. Paparazzi (狗仔队) camp outside their homes, cameras
ready. Tabloids (小报) publish thrilling stories about their personal lives. Just imagine
not being able to do anything without being photographed or interrupted for a signature!
② According to psychologist Christina Villarreal, celebrities—famous people—worry
constantly about their public appearance. Eventually, they start to lose track of who they
really are, seeing themselves the way their fans imagine them, not as the people they
were before everyone knew their names. "Over time," Villareal says, "they feel
separated and alone."
③ The phenomenon of tracking celebrities has been around for ages. In the 4th
century B.C., painters followed Alexander the Great into battle, hoping to picture his
victories for his admirers. When Charles Dickens visited America in the 19th century, his
sold-out readings attracted thousands of fans, leading him to complain about his lack of
privacy. Tabloids of the 1920s and 1930s ran articles about film-stars in much the same
way that modern tabloids and websites do.

④ Being a public figure today, however, is a lot more difficult than it
used to be. Superstars cannot move about without worrying about
photographers with modern cameras. When they say something silly or do
something ridiculous, there is always the Internet to spread the news in
minutes and keep their "story" alive forever.
⑤ If fame is so troublesome, why aren't all celebrities running away
from it? The answer is there are still ways to deal with it. Some stars stay
calm by surrounding themselves with trusted friends and family or by
escaping to remote places away from big cities. They focus not on how
famous they are but on what they love to do or whatever made them
famous in the first place.
⑥ Sometimes a few celebrities can get a little justice. Still, even stars
who enjoy full justice often complain about how hard their lives are. They
are tired of being famous already.
