What did you do with the lucky money you received
this Spring Festival?
Did you spend it on online shopping, games,
or did you invest?
Structuring businesses can be done in different ways. Larger companies are
usually created as corporations (大型公司), which means that the company is its
own entity and owners will not be held personally liable (负法律责任的) for the debt
of the corporation. Corporations can be owned either privately or publicly. When a
corporation is held publicly, it means that shares of the company are bought and
sold on the stock market. A share is a small piece of the corporation. Shares are
sold by the company in order to raise money, which can be used for the operating
(经营) costs of the business as well as for other needs such as research and
development, expansion, and marketing.

To invest or not to invest?
(A) Listening to wealthy people talk about how to get rich, you will often hear
them mention the importance of passive (被动的) income. This is income that you
don’t have to work hard to make. One way to achieve this is through investment,
which comes in many forms. For example, you could invest in your own business
or you could buy shares in other people’s companies.
(B) Playing the stock (股票) market can generate a high income but it is also very
risky. You have to either invest time in learning how to predict the way stock
prices will change, or you need to find a broker (经纪人) who is knowledgeable
and whom you can trust.
(C) Affecting the price of shares in a company are many factors, and they can
change daily. Simple things like weather patterns can affect the projections (预计)
of a crop, for example, and therefore affect the price of a company that uses that
crop. Negative publicity (宣传) can also hurt the shares of a company, even if they
are claims that have no proof. Later, if those claims are proven to be false, the
share price may go back up again but, in the meantime, it is likely to fall.
(D) Since share prices are so volatile[ˈvɑːlətl], people tend to do better in the
stock market if they hold onto their shares for a while. That way, they can ride
out the bad times and wait for the company to recover. However, predicting
the behavior of the best times to buy and sell on the stock market takes a lot of
skill and experience.
(E) This is perhaps why many people choose to invest in a portfolio (证券投资
组合) that is created by someone else. Financial service companies typically
have a range of portfolios that you can choose from that have different levels of
return and risk. Often used for retirement funds ( 退休基金), more
conservative portfolios have a lower rate of return but are less likely to lose
money.
(F) Investing money, especially in the stock market, is not a smart way to make
money fast. But it can be a smart investment if you have some cash that you
really don’t need right away and don’t mind losing if your stocks fall in value.
II. 阅读下列短语或句子(1-6),判断它们所对应的段落(A-F)。
D 1. It is not easy to predict when to buy and sell on the stock market.
F 2. Investing money in the stock market is not suitable for everyone.
B 3. Investing in the stock market is risky.
E 4. There are a range of portfolios with different levels of return and risk.
A 5. One way to generate passive income is through investment.
C 6. Many factors can affect the stock prices, and they can change rapidly.
