Bank holidays in the UK
(A) Like most other countries, the UK has its own national holidays.
However, they are spread out over the year, instead of taking place
over one period. Known as “bank holidays”, these days—which are
always either on a Friday or a Monday—make up either eight or nine
days of the year, depending on which part of the UK you live in.
(B) The name “bank holidays” explains the origin of these days. They
were first introduced by the UK’s Bank Holidays Act in 1871, which
designated (指定) four days in England, Wales and Ireland and five
in Scotland on which banks were allowed to close. In turn, as most
businesses couldn’t operate (运转) without having access to a bank,
they would also close for the day. In later years, more days were
added, including Christmas Day, Boxing Day (the day after
Christmas Day) and New Year’s Day.
(C) Today, bank holidays in the UK are often a glorious (令人愉快的)
occasion for most people. They mean a day off from work or school,
and trips out with family or friends. And as the majority of bank
holidays fall in the warmer months of the year, it’s common for
people in the UK to arrange outdoor social events such as
barbecues, picnics, or days at the beach.
(D) However, as with most national holidays, bank holidays can also
be a time of chaos (混乱). Roads and public transport hubs are often
jam-packed ( 拥挤不堪的). Popular tourist spots are usually
overcrowded, with hundreds or even thousands of people heading
to the same places. Therefore, always have an alternative (备选的)
route planned and stay up to date with road conditions on your
route. Avoiding the peak time is another good choice. If you don’t

Reading Tip
like sharing your vacation with lots of tourists, it’s probably best to
avoid those most popular attractions.
(E) Bank holidays can also delay the process of check depositing.
Even if you are able to bank online or via telephone services, chances
are that your financial transactions (交易) will not go through until
the bank holiday is over. So it’s helpful to get things set up in
advance of holidays.
(F) What’s more, not everyone is lucky enough to get the day off
work. As many businesses now choose to remain open on some
bank holidays—especially retailers (零售商) and, of course, tourist
destinations—many people have no choice but to go to work.
