Elephants might be the most well-known and well-loved animal in African wildlife. But conservation
(保护) of the African elephant faces special difficulties. While the elephant population is half of what it was
40 years ago, some areas of Africa have more elephants than populated areas can support. That's why AWF
scientists are studying elephant behavior, protecting habitats and finding ways for humans to live peacefully
with elephants in Africa.
Years ago, over hunting and the ivory trade were the biggest threats to elephants survival. Luckily, ivory
bans (禁令), hunting rules and protected areas protect elephants from these dangers today.

The 21st century brings a different challenge to elephant conservation-land-use. Elephants walk across
borders and outside parks and other protected areas. So they often destroy crops, causing conflicts (冲突)
between local farmers and these big animals.
Successful conservation strategies (策略) must allow elephants to walk freely in their natural habitats
while reducing conflicts between elephants and local people.
AWF researchers are searching for a way to give both elephants and people the space they need. The
AWF is collecting information on elephant habitats and behavior. The information they gather will help to
develop the widest possible space for elephants.
The AWF is helping elephants by protecting their habitats. And they also work with local farmers to
improve their life in order to encourage them to protect rather than destroy elephants.

says the statesman, from Taiwan Affairs Office of the CPC Central Committee.
HAIKOU — Customs officers in Haikou, capital of South China's Hainan Province, recently stopped a
boat loaded with 781 cases of foreign-brand cigarettes being smuggled into China. The cigarettes are estimated

were going around the northern sea area of Yangpu Port.
The smuggled cigarettes cases, packed into two containers, were disguised to avoid being examined. The

Terrafugia Inc. said Monday that its new flying car has completed its first flight, bringing the company
closer to its goal of selling the flying car within the next year. The vehicle — named the Transition — has two
seats, four wheels and wings that fold up so it can be driven like a car. The Transition, which flew at 1,400
feet for eight minutes last month, can reach around 70 miles per hour on the road and 115 in the air. It flies
using a 23-gallon tank of gas and burns 5 gallons per hour in the air. On the ground, it gets 35 miles per gallon.

Around 100 people have already put down a $10, 000 deposit (定金) to get a Transition when they go
on sale, and those numbers will rise after Terrafugia introduces the Transition to the public later this week at
the New York Auto Show. But don't expect it to show up in too many driveways. It's expected to cost as much
as $279, 000. And it won't help if you're stuck in traffic. The car needs a runway.
Inventors have been trying to make flying cars since the 1930s, according to Robert Mann, an airline
industry expert. But Mann thinks Terrafugia has come closer than anyone to making the flying car a reality.
The government has already permitted the company to use special materials to make it easier for the vehicle
to fly. The Transition is now going through crash tests to make sure it meets federal safety standards.
Mann said Terrafugia was helped by the Federal Aviation Administration's (联邦航空管理局) decision
five years ago to create a separate set of standards for light sport aircraft, which are lower than those for pilots
of larger planes. Terrafugia says an owner would need to pass a test and complete 20 hours of flying time to
be able to fly the Transition, a requirement pilots would find relatively easy to meet.

二、阅读理解
The Internet plays a big part in human life. We use it for work and entertainment. We can find new
recipes on the Interact or advice on staying healthy. We can even use it to learn a new language. We use the
Internet to keep in contact with family and friends and stay in touch with issues we care about. The list goes
on and on.
Well, there may be no going back to an Internet-free life. But can using the Internet too much be bad
for our health? It might be, say researchers. A new study finds that heavy Internet use may be connected to
high blood pressure in an unlikely group — teenagers. So, try to be a responsible guardian for your children.
18
【春】高一英语目标985 班(全国) 习题册
The study results show that teens who spend at least 14 hours a week online are more likely to have high
blood pressure. High blood pressure makes your heart and blood vessels work too hard. Over time, this extra
strain increases your risk of a heart attack or stroke. High blood pressure can also cause heart, kidney and
brain diseases.
The Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Michigan did the study. It involved 335 young people, from 14 to
17 years old. One hundred and thirty-four of the teens were described as "heavy Internet users". Researchers
found that out of these 134 teens, 26 had high blood pressure. The researchers say the study is the first one
to connect heavy web use with high blood pressure. Another research has connected that heavy Internet use
with health problems including anxiety, depression and obesity.
The lead researcher of the study is Andrea Cassidy-Bushrow. For the purpose of the study, she explains,
teens considered heavy Internet users were online on average "25 hours a week". In a statement she said,
"Using the Internet is part of our daily but it shouldn't consume us."
Ms. Cassidy-Bushrow adds that it is important for teens to take regular breaks from their computers or
smart phones and to do some kinds of physical activities. She also suggests that parents limit their children's
use of the Internet to two hours a day, five days a week.
1
The author mainly wants to tell us
.
A. how to prevent high blood pressure
B. too much Internet use may be bad for teenagers
C. it's necessary for teenagers to avoid the Internet
D. heavy Internet use will worsen teenagers' memory
2 What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 5 mean?
A. People shouldn't buy goods through the Internet.
B. People shouldn't waste too much time on the Internet.
C. People shouldn't fall in love with the Internet.
D. People should control the time length of using the Internet.
3 According to Cassidy-Bushrow, teenagers' use of the Internet should be limited to
.
A. twenty five hours a week
B. fourteen hours a week
C. ten hours a week
D. five hours a week
4 The text is mainly intended for
.

The Bronte sisters were three sisters who became famous novelists. Their lives and works are connected
with the lonely moors of Yorkshire, England, where they lived. Patrick Bronte, the sisters' father, was a poor
Irishman who became the parish clergyman of the small, isolated town of Haworth, Yorkshire. Bronte was
somewhat strange and tended to be strict. His wife died in 1821 and her sister brought up the family out of
duty, but with little love or understanding. The sisters went to several boarding schools where they received a
better education than usual for girls at that time, but in a bad atmosphere.
Few jobs were available for women at that time, and the Bronte sisters, except for occasional jobs
as governesses or schoolteachers, lived their entire lives at home.
They were shy, poor, and lonely, and
occupied themselves with music, drawing, reading and — above all — writing. Their isolation led to the early
development of their imaginations. In 1846, under the male pen names of Currer, Ellis, and Acton Bell, the
sisters published a joint volume of poems. Although only two copies were sold, all three sisters soon had their
first novels published.

Charlotte Bronte's most famous novel Jane Eyre (1847) is largely autobiographical. Through the heroine,
Charlotte relived her hated boarding school life and her experiences as a governess in a large house. Rochester,
the hero and master of the house, is fictional. Jane Eyre was enormously successful, but many readers were
shocked that Rochester, who tried to make Jane his mistress, should be rewarded by marrying her. Some
readers were also shocked because Jane wanted to be regarded as a thinking and independent person, rather
than as a weak female.
Charlotte Bronte wrote three other novels. The first one, The Professor, was not published until 1857,
after her death. Shirley (1849) is set among the labour riots of the early 1800s. Villette (1853) the most popular
of the three, is based on Charlotte's unhappy experiences as a governess in Brussels.

B. the three Bronte sisters were brought up in Ireland

3 In many readers' eyes, Rochester,
.
A. acted too rudely towards Jane
B. did not deserve to be Jane's husband
C. was too bad to be truthful
D. should be Jane's master as well as her husband
4 What will probably be discussed in the coming paragraphs of this passage?
A. The other two sisters' works.
B. Charlotte Bronte's life in Brussels.
C. What is talked about in the novel, Villette.

Even as Google plans to test its fleet (车队) of self-driving cars on public roads this summer, its business
model remains a bit of a mystery. By 2025, as many as 250,000 self-driving vehicles could be sold each year
globally, according to a study by an industry research firm.
"Vehicles that can take anyone from A to B at the push of a button could transform mobility for millions
of people," said Chris Urmson, director of Google's self-driving car project. For now, Google has no plans to
sell any of its self-driving cars. They are strictly for research. But they will hit public roads this summer near
Google's headquarters in Mountain View, California. Previous testing has taken place only on closed courses.
The cars are built to operate without a steering wheel, accelerator (油门) or brake pedal. "Our software
and sensors do all the work," Urmson said. "The vehicles will be very basic — we want to learn from them
and adapt them as quickly as possible — but they will take you where you want to go at the push of a button."
The prototype (雏形) is the first of a 100-car fleet the tech giant is building.

In the long run, Urmson sees a future of safer roads — the majority of auto accidents are caused by
human error — and fewer traffic jams. Robotic cars could also shuttle people who can't drive because of age
or illness.
Google has said that self-driving cars could launch new business models in which people buy the use
of vehicles they don't own. The company has already tested other types of self-driving cars on public streets,
including modified Lexus sport-utility vehicles, under a special permit program by the California Department
of Motor Vehicles that requires a human driver at the controls.
The state has issued six other companies permits to operate such cars, including Delphi, Mercedes-Benz,
Volkswagen, Tesla, Bosch and Nissan. The vehicles that will be tested on open roads this summer will have
removable steering wheels, accelerators and brake pedals to allow "safety drivers" to take control if needed.
Google says the cars are safe. The vehicles have sensors that "can detect objects out to a distance of more
than two football fields in all directions, which is especially helpful on busy streets with lots of intersections,"
Urmson said. "We're looking forward to learning how the community understands and interacts with the vehi-
cles, and to uncovering challenges that are unique to a fully self-driving vehicle," Urmson said.
1
The passage informs us that self-driving cars
.
A. will probably decrease traffic jams
B. have already passed necessary tests
C. have been purchased by some companies
D. will be able to communicate with drivers
2 According to Chris Urmson,
.
A. software and sensors are vital for self-driving cars
B. self-driving cars can give driving orders to humans
C. self-driving cars are specially designed for the elderly
D. ordinary vehicles will be replaced by self-driving cars
3 The underlined word "intersections" in the last paragraph probably means "

A. accidents
B. buildings
C. crossings
D. vehicles
4 What is the best title for this passage?
