(2023秋·广西南宁·高三南宁市武鸣区武鸣高级中学校考开学考试)In my mind, the
effect that experience had on me lasted forever. I was determined to learn swimming at the age of
ten. There was a pool, at the K.P.L.B., offering the opportunity. My mother constantly warned
against it, and bore fresh in my mind the details of each drowning in the river. But the K.P.L. B.
pool was safe.
My fear of water started from childhood. It began when I was four years old and father took
me to the beach. There the huge waves knocked me down and swept over me.
The K.P.L.B.pool was quiet. I was afraid of going in all alone, so I sat on the side of the
pool to wait for others. Then came a big boy. He yelled, “Hi, Skinny! How’d you like to be
ducked?” With that he picked me up and threw me into the deep end. I landed in a sitting position,
and swallowed water. But I was not frightened out of my wits—when my feet hit the bottom, I
would make a big jump, come out of the surface. It seemed a long way down. I gathered all my
strength when I landed and made what I thought was a great spring upwards. Then I opened my
eyes and saw nothing but water. I tried to yell but no sound came out. I went down, down,
endlessly. When I came to consciousness, I found myself on the bed in the hospital.
I never went back to the pool. I avoided water whenever I could. This misadventure stayed
with me as the years rolled by. It deprived me of the joy of boating and swimming. Finally, I
decided to get an instructor. Piece by piece, I practiced hard and finally he built a swimmer.
Several months later, the instruction was finished, but I was not. Sometimes the terror would
return.
This went on till July. I swam across the Lake Wentworth. Only once did the terror return.
When I was in the middle of the lake, I put my face under and saw nothing but bottomless water. I
laughed and said, “Well, Mr. Terror, what do you think you can do to me?”
I had conquered my fear of water.

A.The experience made him aware that the pool was safe.
B.The big boy eagerly helped him conquer the fear of water.
C.When thrown into water, he knew someone would save him
D.While he had no skill in swimming, he struggled to go upwards.
26.Which of the following can be used to describe the author?
A.Diligent and cautious. B.Determined and grateful.
C.Dependable and adaptable. D.Humorous and courageous.
27.What does the author try to tell us?

(2023·广西河池·统考三模)There’s a new AI bot: ChatGPT, and you’d better pay
attention, even if you aren’t into artificial intelligence. The tool is an AI chat bot system that
OpenAI released in November 2022 to show off and test what a very large, powerful AI system
can achieve.
ChatGPT remembers the thread of your dialogue, using previous questions and answers to
inform its next responses. It derives its answers from huge volumes of information on the Internet.
ChatGPT is built on top of the OpenAI GPT-3 family of large language models and is fine-tuned
(a method of transfer learning) using both supervised and reinforcement learning (监督和强化学
习).
You can ask ChatGPT anything, like explaining physics, asking for birthday party ideas and
getting programming help. Perhaps it’s not smart enough to replace all humans yet, but it can be
creative, and its answers can sound downright authoritative. A few days after its launch, more than
I million people were trying out ChatGPT. UBS analyst Lloyd Walmsley estimated in February
2023 that ChatGPT reached 100 million monthly users in January, accomplishing in 2 months
what took TikTok about 9 months and Instagram two and a half years.
ChatGPT is free to use at the moment because it is still in its research phase. But when too
many people hop onto the server, it overloads and can’t process your request. It just means you
should try visiting the site at a later time when fewer people are trying to access it. If you want to
skip the wait and have reliable access, there is an option for you. As of Feb. 1, 2023, OpenAI has
aChatGPT pro plan, ChatGPT Plus, which allows users to have general access even during peak
times. This service does come at a cost of $20/month.However, ChatGPT can not replace Google. ChatGPT is an artificial intelligence robot that
provides solutions to your questions, but Google is a search engine in which you can search for as
much information as possible. ChatGPT has limited knowledge due to its programming but
Google has unlimited knowledge which is updated every day.
28.What does paragraph 2 mainly tell us about ChatGPT?
A.Its language model. B.Its working theory.
C.Its design inspiration. D.Its development process.
29.Why does the author list figures in paragraph 3?
A.To show the popularity of ChatGPT.
B.To stress the high cost of inventing ChatGPT.
C.To present the creativity of artificial intelligence.
D.To prove the necessity of developing tools for chatting online.
30.What is ChatGPT Plus intended for?
A.Providing solutions to any question.
B.Guiding users to experience free services.
C.Searching for a huge amount of information.
D.Giving users priority access during peak hours.
31.What is a limitation of ChatGPT compared with Google?
A.It operates based on limited data.
B.It needs longer to provide solutions.
C.It can only update information at a fixed time.
D.It may provide replies unrelated to the questions.

(2023·广西玉林·统考三模)A remarkable new study on how whales behaved when
attacked by humans in the 19th century has implications for the way they react to changes caused
by humans in the 21st century.
The paper is authored by Whitehead and Rendellt at Dalhousie University and their research
addresses an age-old question: if whales are so smart, why did they hang around to be killed? The
answer? They didn’t. Using newly logbooks detailing the hunting of whales in the north Pacific,
the authors discovered that within just a few years, the strike rate of the whalers’ harpoons (鱼叉)
fell by 58%. This simple fact leads to an astonishing conclusion: that information about what was
happening to them was being collectively shared among the whales, who made vital changes to
their behaviour. They learned quickly from their mistakes.
“Sperm whales have a traditional way of reacting to attacks from orca (杀人鲸),” notes
Whitehead. Before humans, orca were their only predators (捕食者), against whom sperm whales
form defensive circles, their powerful tills held outwards to keep predators at bay, “But such
techniques just made it easier for the whalers to kill them,” says Whitehead.Sperm whales are highly socialized animals, able to communicate over great distances.
Information about the new dangers may have been passed on in the same way they share
knowledge about feeding grounds. They also possess the largest brain on the planet. It is not hard
to imagine that they understood what was happening to them.
The hunters themselves realized the whales’ efforts to escape. They saw that the animals
appeared to communicate the threat within their attacked groups. Abandoning their usual
defensive formations, the whales swam upwind to escape the hunters, ships, themselves wind-
powered.
Now, just as whales are beginning to recover from the industrial destruction by 20th-century
whaling fleets, whose steamships and grenade harpoons no whale could escape from, they face
new threats created by our technology. “They’re having to learn not to get hit by ships, cope with
the depredations (劫掠) of long line fishing, the changing source of their food due to climate
change,” Whitehead says. “The same sort of urgent social learning the animals experienced in the
whale wars of two centuries ago is reflected in the way they negotiate today’s uncertain world.”
32.What is the new study mainly about?
A.Whales’ social lives. B.Whales’ emotional intelligence.
C.Whales’ reaction to climate changes. D.Whales’ behavior under human attack.
33.What caused Whales to make changes to escape the hunters’ ship?
A.The wind in their favor.
B.Their powerful physical strength.
C.The shared ship attack information.
D.Their usual defensive formations.
34.What does the author intend to do in Paragraph 5?
A.To provide background information.
B.To summarize the previous paragraphs.
C.To introduce a new topic for discussion.
D.To add more related evidence for the study.
35.What’s Whitehead’s attitude towards whales’ future survival?
A.Pessimistic. B.Optimistic. C.Cautious. D.Unclear.

多余选项。
(2023·广西·校联考模拟预测)You do not need to be a social worker to care for other
people. Even as an ordinary citizen, there are simple yet effective ways to be a more caring and
helpful person. Those small ways could have a great impact on someone else’s life. 36 ,
then you can start with these small steps.
The first thing you need to learn is how to care for what others are going through. Bydeveloping an interest in others’ lives, you become sensitive to the different needs of people and
how you might be able to help them. 37 .
If you have the extra money, it would not be burdensome to buy an extra meal for someone
you know has nothing to eat. 38 . Your simple act of kindness could be enough for that
person to feel better.
39 . Make time for them intentionally by setting schedules of when to spend time,
call, or chat with specific persons. Consistent communication with them will make them feel truly
valued.
Whenever you decide to give to others, make sure that you do it with clear intention. 40
. In connection with this, instead of lending someone money, just give them any extra money you
have and assure them that they do not have to pay it back. This will not only be a relief for them,
but this will save your good relationship from being ruined because of possible payment delays.
You do not have to be a guidance counselor to encourage someone who is emotionally down.
Sometimes, all you need to do is be available for the person and be willing to listen to his
sentiments.
A.Even if you do not offer any helpful advice
B.If you want to develop a heart for sympathy
C.Listening to their stories can touch and move your heart
D.Helping others does not always have to be by giving money
E.Being busy is not an excuse to forget about the people you care about
F.It could be a classmate, a neighbor, or a stranger who lives in the streets
G.Give because you want to help them, not because you expect anything in return

stick to every commitment through until she reaches a bitter 48 ? What if there are
different but 49 valuable qualities, which can be gained by 50 the things that are
not right for her?
With the winter show approaching, I realized she needed to either 51 her class or
commit herself to it. After a few days’ consideration, she 52 dance wasn’t for her — achoice I 53 . Quitting is never a black-and-white issue. Sometimes, it means 54 a
barrier in your way to love something else. In my daughter’s case, ending dance made space for
her new hobbies, such as horseback riding and Girl Scouts. She’s into them for now, but it is okay
if that 55 changes.

两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Alan and the other campers sat around the fire chewing meat chops. It would be Alan’s first
night in a tent, and he was excited but a little nervous.
As they ate, the guide spoke. “Much of the wildlife in this area comes out only at night. So
after supper, let’s start a night watch. Volunteers will take turns to stay down here by the fire, away
from the tents. Those who take part will get a chance to see a world that many of you never knew
existed.”
Alan’s stomach tightened.
“Any volunteers?”
“I’ll take a shift.” The kid who’d sat next to Alan on the bus volunteered. Alan sat tight. Then
one of the girls raised her hand with a giggle. Alan frowned. If a girl could do it, he could, too. He
volunteered.
A few more kids raised their hands, and then the guide explained, “When the rest of you go to
bed in a tent, the first watcher takes his or her place by the fire. The duty of watcher is to keep the
fire going gently. After thirty minutes, he or she wakes the next person.”
Alan heard his voice asking, “Are you sure it’s absolutely safe?”
The guide looked at him. “Well, nothing is absolutely safe. But the danger is minimal. We
wouldn’t have taken you here otherwise. Do you still want to volunteer?”Alan nodded but felt uneasy. The idea of being alone in the night frightened him.
At ten past two in the morning, Alan’s shift began. He found himself sitting by the fire, with a
great world of darkness around. He had never been so scared.
Earlier that day, the guide had challenged the campers to spot animal tracks along the river.
That was fun. But being alone in the dark was not.
Alan’s flashlight was already fading to a dim glow because he had used it too often. There
were only a few logs, so he couldn’t build up the fire.
He looked at the stars and the rising moon. It wasn’t as dark as he’d thought it would be. He
took comfort in that and tried to relax a little.

1. 所续写短文的词数应为150左右;
2. 续写部分分为两段,每段的开头语已为你写好。
