When it comes to the most famous 20th-century painters of the United States, Grandma Moses should be
mentioned, although she did not start painting until she was in her late seventies. As she once said to herself, “I
would never sit back in a rocking chair, waiting for someone to help me.” No one could have had a more active old
age.
She was a live-in housekeeper for a total of 15 years, starting at 12 years of age. After getting married, she
and her husband farmed most of their lives. With no time in her difficult farming life for painting, she had to set
aside her passion for it. At age 92 she wrote, “When I was quite small, my father would get me and my brothers
pieces of white paper. He liked to see us draw pictures. It was a penny a sheet and lasted longer than candy.” It was
her father’s encouragement that fed her passion for painting and this dream was able to manifest (清楚显示) itself
later in her life.
Grandma Moses painted a little as a child and made embroidery (刺绣) as a hobby, but only changed to oils
in her old age because her hands became too stiff (僵硬的) to sew and she still wanted to keep busy and pass the
time. Her pictures were first sold at the local drugstore and were soon noticed by a businessman who bought all that
she painted. Moses’ works, which she called “old-timey” New England landscapes, are careful and lively
portrayals of the country life. Moses said that she would “get an inspiration and start painting; then I’ll forget
everything, everything except how things used to be and how to paint it so people will know how we used to live.”

Bamboo, which represents the life, art and spirit of the Chinese people, is being rediscovered and repurposed
by young innovators (创新者) into products that hold new practical value. As an inheritor (继承人) of Daoming
bamboo weaving (编织), a traditional craft from Sichuan Province, Zhang Dingjuan writes on social media,
Bamboo weaving has more than one outcome, and beauty is in its diversity. “This young female bamboo artist
makes strips of bamboo into earrings, phone cases and more.
She was fortunately able to learn from Zhao Sijin, a national representative of inheritors of the intangible
cultural heritage of Daoming bamboo weaving. Zhang always has a clear goal in inheriting Daoming bamboo
weaving. “My advantage is that I have learned some painting. As traditional Daoming bamboo weaving basically
uses natural color, then why not add some color to it to create a different visual effect?” said Zhang.
Like her teacher Zhao, Zhang also stresses the importance of innovation in her creation. In her opinion,
innovation must be based on a solid mastery of traditional weaving skills, so as not to lose the key feature of
bamboo weaving.
When talking about how to balance innovation and tradition, Zhang noted that “I don’t need to think about it
all the time during the process so it helps me naturally put the ideas into the works.” The work that best reflects this
idea is her plum blossom mirror. “I needed a mirror which could have some decorative elements, so I wanted to try
it with bamboo weaving” With the help of master Zhao, Zhang created her favorite plum blossom pattern.
“With the support of my teacher, I would try it with a determined mind, and I think this determination has
been very important for me. The craft is very traditional, but breaking tradition requires courage. Thoughchallenging, it is rewarding for young designers.”
28.What does Zhang Dingjuan think of bamboo weaving’s beauty?
A.Unique. B.Various. C.Spiritual. D.Meaningful.
29.Why is some color added to bamboo weaving by Zhang Dingjuan?
A.She was inspired by some works of painting.
B.She wants it to become special cultural heritage.
C.She wants to make bamboo weaving look more fascinating.
D.She tries to set a clear goal in bamboo weaving.
30.How does Zhang Dingjuan make bamboo weaving?
A.By combining tradition and bringing new ideas.
B.By making completely new innovation.
C.By following her teacher’s advice.
D.By thinking about her ideas when making weaving.
31.What can we infer from Zhang Dingjuan’s words in the last paragraph?
A.She used to have a weak will. B.It’s necessary to break tradition.
C.Her teacher thinks highly of her. D.She thinks her work is worthwhile.

Whales are celebrated for being the largest and most intelligent creatures in the ocean. Now, biologists have
discovered that they also capture (捕获) tons of carbon from the atmosphere, a service with an economic value of
US $1 trillion for all the great whales, according to a new study published by the International Monetary Fund. The
study points out that protecting whales, normally viewed as a human good, also has a monetary motivation.
“The carbon capture potential of whales is truly incredible,” said the report. “Our conservative estimates put
the value of the average great whale at more than US $2 million, and easily over US $1 trillion for the current stock
of great whales.” Whales absorb carbon in their bodies during their long lives, some of which stretch to 200 years.
When they die, they sink to the bottom of the ocean, taking the carbon with them. According to the study, each
great whale traps around 33 tons of carbon dioxide on average. A tree during the same period only contributes to 3
percent of the carbon absorption of the whale.
Whale populations are today a smidgen of what they once were. It is estimated that there are slightly more
than 1.3 million whales in the ocean, a quarter of their pre-whaling number of 4 to 5 million. Some species in
particular, like the blue whale, are only 3 percent of what they used to be. “We can create financial methods topromote the restoration of the world’s whale populations,” said the report’s authors. “Rewards could help those who
pay significant costs as a result of whale protection.”
With the Paris Agreement coming into force next year and the effects of climate change ever more
widespread, we must prevent the harm to whales. Researchers analyzed that unless new methods are put forward, it
would take over 30 years to double the number of current whales, and several generations to return them to their
pre-whaling numbers. “Society and our own survival can’t afford to wait this long,” they said.
32.What does the new study reveal about whales?
A.They are money-makers for good. B.Their intelligence is unquestionable.
C.They are a natural climate solution. D.Their survival is threatened by carbon.
33.Why is a whale compared with a tree in paragraph 2?
A.To indicate all matter regarding green efforts.
B.To illustrate whales are friendly to the oceans.
C.To highlight whales’ carbon capture potential.
D.To emphasize the importance of tree planting.
34.What can be inferred from what researchers said in paragraph 4?
A.Climate change intensifies. B.Whale populations stay low.
C.Our survival is endangered. D.Whale protection is a priority.
35.What is the most suitable title for the article?
A.Protect whales to protect the planet B.How to restore whale populations
C.Live in harmony with ocean giants D.Whales can guarantee our survival

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。
On a sunny Friday morning, Mr. Stone, the Grade 4 head teacher, walked into the classroom with a new
student following him. She was a lively girl from Mexico, and her red mushroom hair cut immediately drew
everyone’s eyes. With a welcoming smile, Mr. Stone gestured for her to sit beside Mike, a student known for
teasing others.
During break time, Mike couldn’t help but laugh when he caught sight of his new deskmate. Sara’s
distinctive hairstyle seemed like an open invitation for him to make fun of her. Leaning in towards Sara, he
playfully suggested, “Hey, Sara. Ever thought about changing your name to Dora? You look just like Dora the
Explorer!” His words caused laughter and cheers from the others in the classroom.
Sara’s eyes filled with tears, her cheeks turning red with embarrassment. Feeling hurt and upset, she stood up
suddenly, rushing to the teacher’s office to seek support from Mr. Stone. After hearing her story, Mr. Stone offered
her gentle comfort, saying, “Sara, your hairstyle is truly pretty. Remember, everyone has their own sense of
beauty.”
Mr. Stone then directed his attention to Mike, expressing his disappointment and urging Mike to apologize to
Sara. “Mike,” he continued, “your actions were unkind. We must treat everyone with empathy(同情). Laughing at
Sara’s hair has deeply hurt her.”
This conflict was temporarily settled, but Mr. Stone found himself lost in thought. Reflecting on his own
childhood, Mr. Stone recalled how he had been teased for being overweight. The pain caused by hurtful words was
like wrinkles on a crumpled(压皱的)ball of paper. Even if you smoothed them out, the wrinkles stayed.
He wanted to teach an important lesson to Mike, the troublemaker. Then, a unique strategy came to mind. He
contacted Mike’s mother, explaining the situation and discussing a plan with her to develop empathy in her son.
They agreed that over the weekend, Mike’s mother would arrange for Mike to have his hair cut extremely short.
