OpenAI publishes Elon Musk’s emails. ‘We’re sad that it’s come to this’
OpenAI fired back at Elon Musk, who sued the ChatGPT company last week for chasing profit and 1
(diverge) from its original, nonprofit mission. Tuesday night, OpenAI published several of Musk’s emails from the
early days of the company that appear to show Musk acknowledging OpenAI needed to make a ton of money to
fund the incredible computing resources needed to power 2 AI ambitions.
In the emails, parts of 3 have been redacted (修订), Musk argues that the company stood
virtually no chance of building a successful generative AI platform by raising cash alone, and the company needed
to find alternate sources of revenue to survive.
In a November 22, 2015, email to CEO Sam Altman, Musk, an OpenAI co-founder, said the company
needed to raise much more than $100 million to “avoid sounding hopeless.” Musk suggested a $1 billion funding
commitment and promised that he would cover 4 did not get raised.
OpenAI in a blog post Tuesday night said Musk never followed through on his promise, 5
(commit) $45 million in funding for OpenAI, 6 other donors raised $90 million. Lawyers for Musk
declined to comment on OpenAI’s claims.
Musk, in a February 1, 2018, email, told company executives that the only path forward for OpenAI was for
Tesla, his electric car company, to buy it. The company refused, and Musk left OpenAI later that year.
In December 2018, Musk emailed Altman and other executives that OpenAI would not be relevant “ 7
a dramatic change in execution and resources.”
“This needs billions per year immediately or forget it,” Musk emailed. “I really hope I’m wrong.”
OpenAI executives agreed. In 2019, they formed OpenAI LP, a for-profit entity that exists within the larger
company’s structure. That for-profit company took OpenAI from effectively worthless to a valuation of $90 billion
in just a few years — and Altman 8 (credit) as the mastermind of that plan and the key to thecompany’s success.
Microsoft has since committed $13 billion in a close partnership with OpenAI.
Musk’s complaint, 9 (file) last week in California state court, said that company and its
partnership with Microsoft violated OpenAI’s founding charter, representing a breach of contract. Musk is asking
for a jury trial and for the company 10 (pay) back the profit they received from the business.

Directions: Complete the following passage by using the words in the box. Each word can only be used once. Note
that there is one word more than you need.
A.appointed B.defining C. officially D.representing
E. intervening F. starred G. supplies H. explosive
I. freezing J. impressive K. subject
Look to many of history’s cultural symbols, and there you’ll find an ancestor of Frosty, the snowman in the
movie Frozen. It appeared on some of the first postcards, 11 in some of the earliest silent movies, and
was the 12 of a couple of the earliest photos, dating all the way back to the 1800s. I discovered even
more about one of humanity’s earliest forms of life art during several years of research around the world.
For example, snowmen were a phenomenon in the Middle Ages, built with great skill and thought. At a time
of limited means of expression, snow was like free art 13 dropped from the sky. It was a popular
activity for couples to leisurely walk through town to view the temporary works of chilly art. Some were created by
famous artists, including a 19-year-old Michelangelo, who in 1494 was 14 by the ruler of Florence,
Italy, to build a snowman in his mansion’s courtyard.
The Miracle of 1511 took place during six 15 weeks called the Winter of Death. The city of
Brussels was covered in snowmen—a(n) 16 scene that told stories on every street corner. Some were
political in nature, criticizing the church and government. Some were a reflection of people’s imagination. For the
people of Brussels, this was a(n) 17 moment of defining freedom. At least until spring arrived, by which
time they were dealing with damaging floods.
If you fear the heyday of the snowman has passed, don’t worry: I’ve learned that some 18
snowman history is still being made today. Every year since 1818, the people of Zurich, Switzerland, celebrate the
beginning of spring by blowing up a snowman. On the third Monday of April, the holiday Sechsclauten is kicked
off when a cotton snowman called the Boogg is stuffed with explosive and paraded through town by bakers andother tradesmen who throw bread to the crowds. The parade ends with the Boogg being placed on a 40-foot pile of
firewood. After the bells of the Church of St. Peter have rung six times, 19 the passing of winter, the
pile is lit. When the snowman explodes, winter is considered 20 over—the quicker it is burnt down,
the longer summer is said to be.

Is Paperless Office Really Paperless?
A rising economy increased paper sales by 6 to 7 percent each year in the early to mid-1990s, and the
convenience of desktop printing allowed office workers to indulge anything and everything. In 2004, Ms. Dunn, a
communications supplies director, said that plain white office paper would see less than a 4 percent growth rate, a
primary reason for which is that some 47 percent of the workforce entered the job market after computers had
already been introduced to offices.
For office innovators, the dream of paperless office is an example of high-tech arrogance(傲慢). Today’s
office service is overwhelmed By more newspapers than ever before. After decades of development, the American
government can finally get rid of the madness on paper. In the past, the demand for paper has been far ahead of
growth in the American economy, but the sales have slowed markedly over the past two to three years, despite the
good economic conditions.
“Old habits are hard to break,” says Ms. Dunn. “There are some functions that paper serves where a screendisplay doesn’t work. Those functions are both its strength and its weakness.” Analysts attribute the decline to such
factors as advances in digital databases and communication systems. Escaping our craving for paper, however, will
be anything but an easy affair.
“We’re finally seeing a reduction in the amount of paper being used per worker in the workplace,” says John
Maine, vice president of a paper economic consulting firm. “More information is being transmitted electronically,
and an increasing number of people are satisfied that information exists only in electronic form without printing
multiple backups.”
To reduce paper use, some companies are working to combine digital and paper capabilities. For example,
Xerox is developing electronic paper: thin digital displays that respond to a stylus, like a pen on paper. Marks can
be erased or saved digitally. Even with such technological advances, the increasing amounts of electronic data
necessarily require more paper.
“The information industry today is composed of a thin paper crust surrounding an electronic core,” Mr. Saffo
wrote. The growing paper crust is most noticeable, but the hidden electronic core is far larger and growing more
rapidly. The result is that we are becoming paperless, but we hardly notice at all. “That’s one of the greatest ironies
of the information age,” Saffo says. “It’s just common sense that the more you talk to someone by phone or
computer, it inevitably leads to a face-to-face meeting. The best thing for the aviation industry was the Internet.”
39.Which of the following statements is NOT a reason for the slowdown in American paper sales?
A.Workforce with better computer skills.
B.Slow growth of the U.S. economy.
C.Changing patterns in paper use.
D.Changing employment trends.
40.What does the last sentence in Para 3 mean?
A.We have to look at paper consumption from different angles.
B.There is little chance that paper consumption will fall in the digital age.
C.Paper consumption will be greatly reduced in the digital age.
D.People are no longer so addicted to paper in the digital age.
41.The innovations from Xerox and other companies feature ___.
A.the intergration of digital technology with traditional paper
B.the chance from traditional paper to digital technology
C.the combination of the use of computer screens and cell phonesD.a new type of computer writing and communication
42.What can we draw from the example of the aviation industry in the last paragraph?
A.The dream of the paperless office will be realized some day.
B.People usually prefer to have face-to-face meetings instead of using computers.
C.More digital data use leads to greater paper use in the digital time.
D.Some people are no longer opposed to video-conferencing.

Superb Spring Gardens
Sunshine on your face, the scent of blossom in the air, the dreamy song of a blackbird. What better way to
while away a spring day than in a country garden filled with flowers like magnolia, rhododendron, primula, iris,
daffodils or bluebells? Here are a four of the best.
My family lost everything in the little-known flood of Baton Rouge, Louisiana last year that the Red Cross
called the “Worst US disaster since Hurricane Sandy.”
It began raining in mid-August. Then it rained some more, got more powerful, and didn’t stop for days.
There was talk that the local rivers were going to crest (到达顶点)and cause some pretty serious flooding. We lived
somewhat close to the Amite River, but our senior neighbors told us that our neighborhood hadn’t flooded in over
100 years.
Local news said that the nearby high school may get a little bit of water inside from the rising river. We
thought we had a couple of days to plan on how we were going to shelter in place because of the weather forecast.
On the 13th of August I woke up, walked outside and headed toward the direction of the river. Some of the
lower areas were collecting water but there was no standing water anywhere near my house or even my
neighborhood. I went back home and told my wife we should probably get some supplies in case this got serious;
that maybe we should even pack a car in case we needed to leave though I was fairly certain there was nothing to
worry about.
About 30 minutes into slowly packing there was a loud banging on my front door. It was my wife’s cousin. I
opened the door and she said, “What are you doing?! Get out of the house!” I looked behind her and noticed my
entire yard underwater and the waterline only about a half-inch from going over my doorstep and into my house.
I was floored. The river wasn’t supposed to crest until the next day. I thought we had more time.
I yelled at my wife, “We have to get out of the house. Now!”
We packed up both our cars in about 10 minutes with only our most precious memories. Everything else wehad built during a 10-year marriage was left behind. We evacuated about 5 miles east away from the river to my
wife’s grandmothers.
After being there for about an hour someone came to the front door and said, “You guys ned to get out. The
river is coming.”
Sure enough, her yard was flooding too.
We evacuated a second time in as many hours to her cousin’s house even further east. After only an hour we
were told again that the river was on the way and we had to leave.
43.The author realized the arrival of the flood when ______.
A.the rain started to fall heavily and non-stop
B.the nearby high school was slightly affected
C.there was standing water in some lower areas
D.he was informed by his wife’s cousin at the door
44.What does the author mean by saying “I was floored” in the 6th paragraph?
A.He was clam enough to cope with the flood.
B.He became trapped by the rising floodwater.
C.He was shocked by the early arrival of the flood.
D.He lost his temper with his wife for being unprepared.
45.From the story, what do we know about the author’s evacuation?
A.He didn’t take action immediately despite his neighbor’s warning.
B.He trusted the weather forecast so that he prepared himself in advance.
C.He and his wife brought some supplies and valuable belongings with them.
D.He was forced to leave the temporary homes again and again to avoid danger.
46.Which of the following might be the best title of the passage?
A.Mutual Support in Disasters B.Baton Rouge Flooding
C.How to Survive a Flood D.Methods of Predicting Floods
Section C
Directions: Read the following passages. Fill in each blank with a proper sentence given in the box. Each
sentence can be used only once. Note that there are two more sentences than you need.
Living off grid
When you need electricity, you just plug in the machine and switch it on. If you need water, you turn on thetap. 4 7 For many people, these facilities are the basics of civilized society and the idea of living without
them seems risky. Yet for a growing number of people, the idea of living off grid — without electricity, water or
sewage — is an increasingly attractive lifestyle.
Off-gridders do not have to give up electricity or a modern lifestyle — some choose to, but most use small
hydroelectric power systems, solar panels or windmills to generate enough power for their needs. Heating and
cooking needs are met by solar energy or wood burning systems, and toilet facilities range from non-water toilets to
outside compost toilets. 4 8 It ranges from traditional yurts (a type of tent) to luxury house with high-
speed internet and central heating. Whether they live in simple homes or luxury houses, what they all have in
common is that their lifestyles do not create any pollution or carbon emissions — the ultimate goal for off-gridders.
Around 100,000 people are thought to be living off grid in the UK now. 4 9 They grow their own
food, home-school their children and provide their own medical care. They are people who have been priced out of
the housing market or who have grown disillusioned with what modern society can offer and who decides that an
alternative lifestyle isn’t a pipe dream, but a viable option.
A part from living an alternative lifestyle, cost is a big factor in choosing to live off-grid. Off-grid houses are
far cheaper to build than ordinary homes since they don’t need to be connected to the electricity or water supplies
and even road access is not necessary. Materials tend to be cheaper, too. Popular options include straw or old tyres
and cement.
Surprisingly, the biggest problem off-gridders face is not building their homes or becoming self-sufficient
but getting permission to build. Rural areas away from town are the perfect choice but these are often protected by
law from construction of any kind or have building restrictions. There are now several websites dedicated to land-
sharing so that the costs of buying land and getting permission can be shared, and there are increasing numbers of
off-grid communities. 50 Off-gridding could soon be common all over Europe and America.
A.Many are self-sufficient, not just providing their own electricity, water and sewage systems, but in all aspects.
B.After you use the toilet, you flush it and the waste disappears.
C.This shift from individual to group off-gridding reflects the fact that the trend is growing noticeably.
D.They live in a huge variety of types of accommodation.
E.Living off-grid still has a long way to go before it becomes a mainstream way of living.
F.Rather than building permanent homes, vans or mobile homes or even old shipping containers are other options.
III. Summary Writing (10分)Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in no more
than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.
How to Be a Successful Team Leader?
Every well-organized team needs to have an outstanding leader with specific skills. Sometimes the leader’s
abilities can come to affect the whole team. Although we students are still young, it’s never too early to cultivate
leadership skills.
A team consists of both leaders and followers. Neither side can exist and work effectively without the other.
What is essential to the role of leader is the ability to unite the whole team. A great leader enables their team to
achieve a common goal through the giving of clear directions and support. Meanwhile, everyone on a team also
desires personal success, so a balance can be hard to strike. If a leader doesn’t have fierce determination, the
followers will lose their confidence and things will not be done well.
What’s more, a successful and charming leader ought to be able to handle interpersonal relationships well.
They should be honest, fair, objective and impartial (公正的) when it comes to both rewards and punishments.
These kinds of leaders are trustworthy, and thus, the working atmosphere will only come to be improved. They are
role models who can have a strong influence on the whole team.
To become a powerful leader at school, students have to take the initiative in connecting with their fellow
students. Good communication skills allow people to build good relationships, which is an essential part of being a
good leader. If you find it hard to express your ideas clearly to those who you collaborate with, it may be rather
difficult for you to be a good leader.
It’s a well-known fact that, whatever field you wish to work in, leadership skills are necessary for anyone
who desires to have a successful career. So it’s never too early to train yourselves as promising future leaders.
