snow as wind chill temperatures were to plunge during the day, reaching -40℃in some parts after sundown,

which serves Massachusetts, said on Twitter.
Airlines canceled more than 4,000 flights on Thursday and hundreds more on Friday, according to

一、阅读理解
Whenever we see a button, we want to press it because we know that something will happen. This is true
in most cases, for example, on a doorbell. But some buttons are actually fake(假的), like the "close" button on
a lift.
Many people are in the habit of pressing the "close" button because they don't have the patience to wait
for the lift doors to shut. But "close" buttons on lifts are a complete trick, at least in the US — the doors will
not close any faster no matter how hard you press.
It started in the 1990s when the Americans with Disabilities Act was passed in the US, making sure
that all lifts stayed open long enough so that people with disabilities could enter. Only US firefighters and
repairmen can use the buttons to speed up the door-closing process if they have a code or special keys.
But to normal lift riders, the buttons aren't completely useless. According to psychologists, fake buttons
can actually make you feel better by offering you a sense of control.
"A sense of control is very important. It reduces stress and increases well-being," said Ellen J. Langer,
a psychology professor at Harvard University. Experts also added that a lot of buttons that don't do anything
exist in our life for this same purpose.
For example, pedestrian crosswalk buttons don't live up to their names either. Pressing them used to help
make the traffic signals change faster, but that was before computer-controlled traffic signals were introduced.
But psychologists found it interesting that even when people are aware of these little "white lies", they still
continue to push fake buttons because as long as the doors eventually close, it is considered to be worth the effort.
1
What is the author's purpose in writing the text?
A. To explore the functions of fake buttons.
B. To describe different buttons.
C. To analyze various habits of pushing buttons.
D. To explain the advantages and disadvantages of fake buttons.

C. They can control the traffic signals.
D. They help pedestrians cross quickly.
4 Which may be the best title for the passage?
A. Buttons in the US

Last December my mother and I 1 (fly) to London. The first thing we did was to go on a bus
sightseeing tour.
This is the best way to see all the sights and learn all about the history of a city. By the time the tour was

many people made 3 (they) way home through the heavy traffic on bicycles. I was looking forward
to spending the next day in Oxford Street with all its 4 (amaze) shops. And what 5
amazing experience that was! We bought a ticket for the underground and could go everywhere very quickly.
We spent all morning shopping and admiring the Christmas displays inside the shops and out in the
streets. Then we went to a wax museum 6 (call) Madame Tussauds (杜莎夫人蜡像馆), which had
a lot of wax 7 (figure) of famous people. My mother took a picture of me 8 (stand)

As Congress and the public wrestle with the Facebook scandal (丑闻), many people are now realizing
the risks of data collection to them. Facebook recently admitted that nearly all of its 2.2 billion users have had
data scraped (篡改) by "ill-natured" people or companies. The firm itself has joined calls for better privacy
(隐私) regulations.
For years, watchdogs have been warning about sharing information with data-collecting companies. Most
casual internet users are only now realizing how easy and common it is for irresponsible and unknown orga-
nizations to collect detailed digital data of them. They do this by combining the separate bits of information
consumers have given up to e-tailers, health sites, quiz apps and countless other digital services.
A study from researchers at the University of Queensland shows that staying off of Facebook for five
days can actually lower levels of the stress in the body. Yet despite the study, and the recent Delete Facebook
movement, Facebook user statistics remain strong.
As scholars of public responsibility and digital media systems, we know that the business of social media
is based on user data and offering it for sale. There's no single way for them to protect data as many users might
expect. Like the social pollution of fake news, bullying (欺诈) and junk mail that Facebook's platform spreads,
the company's privacy crisis also results from a power imbalance — Facebook knows nearly everything about
its users, who know little to nothing about it.
It's not enough for people to delete their Facebook accounts. Nor is it likely that anyone will successfully
replace it with a nonprofit alternative centering on privacy and responsibility. Besides, this problem is not
specific just to Facebook! Other companies, including Google and Amazon, also gather and use extensive
personal data, and are locked in a digital arms race that we believe threatens to destroy privacy altogether.
1
What does the underlined word "this" in the second paragraph refer to?
A. Sharing information with data-collecting.
B. Collecting detailed digital data of consumers.
C. Combining the separate information of companies.
D. Quiz apps and countless other digital services.

B. The Online Quiz App
C. The Business of Facebook

How similar are language and music?
Language is part of our daily life, no matter where we live in the world. 1 Both language and
music play a huge role in our culture and here are some of their similarities.
·Both language and music have a writing system.
In English we record language using the alphabet, which is a collection of letters. Similarly, we use notes
to keep a record of music. Musicians read notes and create meaning in the form of music. 2 By
writing pieces of text or music, we are able to share experiences through time. We can read the ideas or hear
the composition of someone who lived hundreds of years ago.
    · 3
You can make a good guess at where someone is from by listening to the language they use. In the same
way, we know that styles of music are different around the world, giving us the opportunity to explore many
different cultures through their music and providing us with music for every situation.
    ·Both share emotion.
4 Of course you may be able to see it in my face, but you will know for sure through my words.
Similarly, music can sound angry, sad or happy. Music can show you exactly how the composer was or is
feeling, and allows us to share in that emotion. When you feel happy, you might want to sing and dance to a
happy song to celebrate your happiness. 5 I think we have all used music to express or process
our emotions, often combining it with language in the form of song lyrics.
A. Both are expressive.
B. Both vary with culture.
C. How do you know that I am angry?
D. We use language to express our thoughts.
E. So just as you read English, you can read music.
F. Similarly, music is part of many people's life.
G. In contrast, you probably also listen to sad music when you are feeling down.

The day when the jobs were handed out was one of the most exciting moments for all the children in
the class. It took place during the first week of the term. Every kid was given a job for which they would be
responsible for the rest of that school year.
Some jobs were more interesting than others, and the children were eager to be given one of the best
ones. When giving them out, the teacher took into account which pupils had been most responsible during
the previous year. During the previous year, Rita had carried out the teacher's instructions perfectly. All the
children knew Rita would be given the best job.
But there was a big surprise. Each child received a normal job. But Rita's job was very different. She
was given a little box containing some sand and one ant. Though the teacher insisted that this ant was very
special, Rita felt disappointed. Most of her classmates felt sorry for her. Even her father became very angry
with the teacher and he encouraged Rita to pay no attention to this insignificant pet. However, Rita preferred
to show the teacher her error by doing something special with that job of little interest.
Rita started investigating all about her little ant and gave the ant the best food, and it grew quite a bit
bigger.
One day, a man, who looked very important, came into their classroom and declared, "Your class has
been chosen to accompany me this summer on a journey to the tropical rainforest, where we will investigate all
kinds of insects. Among all the schools of this region, your class has best cared for the little ant."
That day the school was filled with joy and celebration. Everyone thanked Rita for having been so patient
and responsible. And many children learnt that to be given the most important task you have to know how to
be responsible even in what are the smallest tasks.

一、阅读理解
A food additive (添加剂) is any substance that is added to food. Many people are put off by the idea of
"chemicals in food", The truth is that all food is made up of chemicals. Natural substances like milk, as well
as man-made ones like drinks on sale in the market, can be described by chemical formulas. Some chemical
substances are indeed harmful, but a person who refused to consume any chemicals would find nothing to eat.
The things we eat can be divided into natural and man-made substances. Some people feel that only
natural foods are healthy and that all man-made ingredients are to be avoided. But many natural chemicals,
found in plants and animals, are harmful when eaten, and some laboratory-made substances increase the
nutritional value of food. Other chemicals have natural and man-made forms that are exactly alike: vitamin
C is vitamin C, whether it comes from a test tube or from an orange. Like "chemical", "man-made" doesn't
necessarily mean "not fit to eat".
Food additives are used for many reasons. We add sugar and salt and other things to foods we prepare
at home to make them taste better. Food producers have developed a range of additives that stabilize, thicken,
harden, keep wet, keep firm, or improve the appearance of their products. Additives can make food more
convenient or nutritious, give it a longer shelf life, and make it more attractive to the consumer, thus increasing
the sales and profits of the producers.
Food additives are presently the centre of a storm of serious argument. Food producers have been known
to use additives that have not been proved safe; some substances in common use have been proved unsafe and
have been taken off the market. Many people feel there's a risk of eating food to which anything has been
added. But food additives are now regulated by the FDA of the federal government, and new additives are
subjected to strict testing before they can be placed on the market. For most people, the chances of developing
serious side effects (副作用) from the long-term use of presently approved (批准) food additives are very slim.
1

.
A. it is right to reject chemicals in food
B. all foods consist of chemical substances
C. food additives are harmful to our health

二、语法填空
Giving hongbao, or red packets, during the Spring Festival or other important occasions is a long Chinese
tradition. A red packet, usually a red envelope with money in it, 1 (give) out to children by parents,
grandparents, or relatives and friends as 2 way of wishing them good luck or good fortune.
According to the Internet, 3 (compare) with the fat hongbao children got in previous years,
red envelopes during this Spring Festival became fewer and 4 (thin). For those children who had
got a lot of money from their red envelopes in the past years, the slim red packets they 5 (receive)
this year might lead to their complaints and make them less happy during the festival.
However, fewer red packets stand for a positive social trend, 6 should be encouraged. Hand-
ing out red packets is a kind of 7 (express) of love for children, regardless of how much money
8 contain. With a large amount of lucky money during the Spring Festival, some children become
moneybags over one night. Too much money won't be beneficial for children to make a wise choice 9
saving and spending. For this reason, it is necessary 10 (change) the way to express our feelings.

一、阅读理解
Imagine a cat that does not need someone to clean up after it keeps an older person company and helps
them remember to take their medicine. That is the shared dream of the toy maker Hasbro and scientists at
Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. The researchers received a 3-million-dollar award from the
National Science Foundation for a special project. They want to find ways to add artificial intelligence, or A.I.,
to Hasbro's "Joy for All" robotic cat.
The cat has already been for sale for two years. Though priced over 1,000 dollars, it sold quite well. It was
meant to act as a "companion" for older people. Now the project is aimed at developing additional abilities for
the cat. Researchers at Brown's Humanity-Centered Robotics Initiative are working to decide which activities
older adults may need the most. They hope to make the cat perform a small number of activities very well.
Such activities include finding lost objects and reminding the person to take medicine or visit their doctor.
They also want to keep the cost down to just a few hundred dollars.
It is an idea that has appealed to Jeanne Elliot. Her 93-year-old mother Mary Derr lives with her in
South Kingstown. Derr has dementia (痴呆). The "Joy for All" cat that Elliot bought this year has become
a true companion for Derr. The cat stays with Derr and keeps her calm while Eliot is at work. Elliot said a
robotic cat that helps her mother to remember to take her medicine and be careful when she walks would be
greater.
The researchers are trying to learn how the improved cats will complete helpful activities and how they
will communicate. They say that they do not want a talking cat, however. Instead they are trying to design a
cat that can move its head in a special way to successfully communicate its message. In the end, they hope
to create an exchange between the human and the cat in which the human feels the cat needs them. By do-
ing so, the researchers hope they can even help prevent feelings of loneliness and sadness among elderly people.
1
What's the purpose of the project?
A. To relieve the pain of the elderly.
B. To promote the sales of a medicine.
C. To help make the robotic cat smarter.
D. To invent a robotic cat for the elderly.

Being responsible are actually not that difficult. I used to think that it was hard to grow up into a
responsible member of the society. An incident happening in a rainy Sunday afternoon changed my attitude. I
was on my way to the bookstore and was waiting for the green light while a girl was knocked down by passing
car, which drove off quickly. A man immediately gave him first aid and I had joined in without hesitation.
Soon many help was given to the girl. We sent her to the nearest hospitals in time, and she received properly

一、阅读理解

Wilderness
"In wilderness (荒野) is the preservation of the world." This is a famous saying from a writer regarded
as one of the fathers of environmentalism. The frequency with which it is borrowed mirrors a heated debate on
environmental protection: whether to place wilderness at the heart of what is to be preserved.
As John Sauven of Greenpeace UK points out, there is a strong appeal in images of the wild, the
untouched; more than anything else, they speak of the nature that many people value most dearly. The urge to
leave the subject of such images untouched is strong, and the danger exploitation (开发) brings to such land-
scapes (景观) is real. Some of these wildernesses also perform functions that humans need — the rainforests,
for example, store carbon in vast quantities. To Mr. Sauven, these "ecosystem services" far outweigh the gains
from exploitation.
Lee Lane, a visiting fellow at the Hudson Institute, takes the opposing view. He acknowledges that
wildernesses do provide useful services, such as water conservation. But that is not, he argues, a reason to avoid
all human presence, or indeed commercial and industrial exploitation. There are ever more people on the Earth,
and they reasonably and rightfully want to have better lives, rather than merely struggle for survival. While the
ways of using resources have improved, there is still a growing need for raw materials, and some wildernesses
contain them in abundance. If they can be tapped without reducing the services those wildernesses provide,
the argument goes, there is no further reason not to do so. Being untouched is not, in itself, a characteristic
worth valuing above all others.
I look forward to seeing these views taken further, and to their being challenged by the other participants.
One challenge that suggests itself to me is that both cases need to take on the question of spiritual value a little
more directly. And there is a practical question as to whether wildernesses can be exploited without harm.
This is a topic that calls for not only free expression of feelings, but also the guidance of reason. What
position wilderness should enjoy in the preservation of the world obviously deserves much more serious thinking.
1
John Sauven holds that
.
A. many people value nature too much
B. exploitation of wildernesses is harmful
C. wildernesses provide humans with necessities

一、阅读理解
When you think about coffee alternatives, garlic is probably one of the last things that comes to mind,
but that is exactly the ingredient that one Japanese inventor used to create a drink that looks and tastes like
coffee.
74-year-old Yokitomo Shimotai, a coffee shop owner in Aomori Prefecture, Japan, claims that his unique
"garlic coffee" is the result of a cooking blunder he made over 30 years ago, when he burned a steak and garlic
while waiting tables at the same time. Intrigued by the scorched garlic's aroma, he mashed it up with a spoon
and mixed it with hot water. The resulting drink looked and tasted a lot like coffee. Making a mental note
of his discovery, Yokimoto carried on with his job, and only started researching garlic coffee again after he
retired.
Committed to turning his weird drink into a commercial product, Yokitomo Shimotai spent years opti-
mizing the formula, and about five years ago, he finally achieved a result he was satisfied with. To make his
dissolvable garlic grounds, he roasts the cloves in an electric oven, and, after they've cooled off, smashes them
into fine particles and packs them in dripbags.
"My drink is probably the world's first of its kind," the garlic coffee inventor told Kyodo News. "It contains
no caffeine so it's good for those who would like to drink coffee at night or pregnant women."
"The bitterness of burned garlic apparently helps create the coffee-like flavor," Shimotai adds. He claims
that, although his garlic coffee does give off an aroma of roasted garlic, it doesn't cause bad breath, because
the garlic is thoroughly cooked. And if you can get past the smell, the drink apparently does taste a lot like
actual coffee.
If decaf isn't good enough for you, and you're in the mood for something new, you can try Yokitomo
Shimotai's garlic coffee at his shop, in the city of Ninohe, Iwate Prefecture, or buy your own dripbags for just
324 yen ($2.8).
