remain作不及物动词, 意为“逗留; 不离去”, 通常和副词或介词连用, 相当于stay; 另外,
它还可意为“剩余; 遗留; 继续存在”;
remain用作连系动词时，意为“保持；仍是”，后接形容词、名词、动词-ing形式或介词短
语作表语。remain v. 保持不变；剩余 remain 不能用于被动语态

辨析：some times, some time, sometimes & sometime
在some times中, some意为“一些”, time意为“次数”, 因此some times的意思是“几次”。
在some time中some意为“一些”, time意为“时间”, 因此some time的意思是“一段
时间”。
sometimes为副词, 意为“有时; 不时; 间或”, 多用于一般现在时的句子中。
sometime为副词, 意为“在某一时候”, 表示的时间不确定。
3.It produced a nice smell so he tasted the brown water.
smell作名词，意为“气味；嗅觉 ”。
smell用作及物动词时，意为“闻到; 闻 (smelt, smelt/ smelled, smelled)”。
smell作系动词，“有 / 发出……气味”。
苹果散发出香甜的气味。The apples give off a sweet smell.
你闻到什么特殊气味没有？ Did you smell anything unusual?

take place：发生；出现。常指有计划、有安排地“发生”，是不及物动词短语，不能接宾语，
一般也不用作被动结构。
辨析：happen意为“发生”，为不及物动词，不能用于被动语态。指具体客观事件的发生，
有偶然性，未能预见。

2) 会议将在大厅举行。The meeting will take place in the hall. .

doubt用作动词，“怀疑; 不相信; 不能肯定”，doubt后面一般接宾语从句，在否定句和疑
问句中，接that引导的宾语从句。在肯定句中，一般接whether或if引导的宾语从句。
doubt用作名词，“疑惑; 疑问; 不确定”，常与about/of/as to/on等介词连用。without doubt
毫无疑问；的确
1)她无疑是那家医院最优秀的护士。Without doubt, she is the best nurse in the hospital.
2) 你怀疑她会成功吗？Do you doubt that she will succeed?
3)他不敢肯定她是否会遵守诺言。He doubts if she will keep her word.

by accident 意为偶然地，意外地, 相当于by chance通常在句中作状语，也可以作表语。

I have just invented a time machine that allows people to travel into the past or the future
for five hours.
I thought that it would be fun to see what my father was like when he was 10 years old.
So I got into my time machine. I typed the words “1964, 11 Niven Road, Singapore”， and
