It was an early blow to my self-confidence. I was attending my first group meeting in the lab as a postdoc,
and I was pleased that I could follow most of the discussion. Then, in front of everyone, the professor turned to me
and asked about my previous accomplishments. I froze. As a PhD student, I had achieved lots to be proud of. But
all of those were in my home country of Brazil. Now I was in Washington, DC and I didn’t know what the word
“accomplishment” meant. So all I could say was “I don’t know”.
I had decided to do a postdoc abroad because I thought the training would help me secure a teaching position.
I applied for and received a Brazilian government fellowship to spend 18 months working abroad and got a position
in a lab. It all seemed so easy—until I actually started.
In a new country, I struggled. After the mortifying lab meeting incident, my confidence took another hit. The
paper I intended to publish did not materialize. I used to be invited to give talks. Now, I was asked to speak more
slowly because of my accent. My confidence was destroyed.
After months of self-doubt, I reminded myself that I had potential. I needed to do something to regain my
confidence. I thought a change of environment might be what I needed. So I made the move.
In another new lab. I still felt insecure. However, I was determined to make the most of the time I had. There
were more opportunities to interact with others, which forced me to talk more. It was awful at first, but with
practice I began to feel more confident in my English. I proposed new projects. I began to receive positive feedback
on my presentations.
My confidence is back. I feel a little like Wonder Woman. She was a strong soldier in her homeland. When she
left, she experienced obstacles and failures only to become even stronger than before.
24. What was the author’s reaction when asked about her previous achievements?
A. She felt insecure. B. She kept silent.
C. She was at a loss. D. She felt proud.
25. Why did the author go abroad?
A. To apply for government fellowship. B. To get a doctor’s degree.
C. To build her own lab. D. To gain experience for a position.
26. What does the underlined word “it” in paragraph 1 refer to?
A. I didn’t give a proper response in a lab meeting.
B. The paper I intended to publish did not materialize.
C. I was asked to speak more slowly because of my accent.D. I reminded myself that I had potential.
27. What can be the best title for the text?
A. A lab meeting incident B. I found my inside Wonder Woman
C. Brazilians’ confidence improved D. Poor English ruined opportunity

Laird Kay had been a designer of wine storerooms for 12 years. But he never forgot his first
love,photography.
He started contributing as a photographer - mainly product shots. But as Kay took his photography
further,he found himself hanging out at airports for the first time in his life, combining his photography skills
with his other early love - airplanes.Asked to choose a symbol of beauty, most people might think of a work
of art.He,however,would say an airplane.
He started doing more and more airplane photography.More airlines found him on social media and
wanted to work with him.Laird Kay,who fell in love with planes as a child on vacation and who has always
seen aircraft as objects of beauty,as well as of convenience, became an airplane photographer.
However much love you have for the industry, being an airplane photographer has its drawbacks.
Sometimes it rains when Kay has been flown in for a shoot - "you go with it," he says. And for someone
who isn't great with heights,as he isn't,it can be tricky. "I was raised 10 feet, looking down on an A380.It was
terrifying, but once you were there, you were concentrating on getting the shots. But I've got sweaty hands just
thinking about it." he says.
Laird Kay is the living symbol of the term "getting there is half the fun".Except in his case,it's more like
99% of the fun!A look of absolute joy washes over him when he's on a plane. His art is also influenced by his
travels as a young boy to South Africa, his education as an urban planner and designer - and his extremely
sensitive eye that doesn't miss a single detail.
28.What makes Kay love airplanes that much? ______
A. Their beauty in his eyes. B. Their providing comfort.
C. His hanging out at airports. D. His experience as a designer.
29.How did Kay feel when photographing on an A380? ______
A. Fearful. B. Thrilled. C. Honored. D. Regretful.
30.What is the last paragraph about? ______
A. Kay's attitude towards fun.
B. Kay's great influence in art.C. Contributors to Kay's success.
D. Several ways of getting great joy.
31.What does Kay's story tell us? ______
A. Well begun is half done.
B. The person who is cornered will fight.
C. Where there is love, there is pleasing success.
D. Man learns little from success, but much from failure.

Parents, teachers and caregivers have long believed in the magic of storytelling to calm and comfort
kids.Researchers working in pediatric (儿科) have now quantified the physiological and emotional benefits of
a well-told tale.
"We know that narrative has the power to transport us to another world," says Brocking-ton,who studies
emotions and learning at Brazil's Federal University. He adds, "Earlier research suggested that stories help children
process and regulate their emotions—but this was mostly conducted in a lab, with subjects answering questions
while lying inside functional MRI machines. There's little research on physiological and psychological effects of
storytelling in a more commonplace hospital setting."
So the investigators working in several Brazilian hospitals split a total of 81 patients aged 4 to l1 into two
groups, matching them with storytellers who had a decade of hospital experience. In one group, the storyteller led
each child in playing a riddle game.In the other, youngsters chose books and listened as the storyteller read them
aloud. Before and after these sessions, the researchers took saliva (唾液) samples from each child, then asked
them to report their pain levels and conducted a free association word quiz and analyzed samples.
Children in both groups benefited measurably from the interactions. Those who heard stories also reported pain
levels dropping almost twice as much as those in the riddle group, and they used more positive and light words to
describe their hospital stay. The study demonstrates that playing games or simply interacting with someone can
relax kids and improve their outlook -but that hearing stories has an especially dramatic effect. "The researchers
really tried to control the social interaction component of the storyteller, which I think was key," says Mar,a
psychologist at York University.
32.What does Brockington say about stories? ______
A. The effects of them are easy to show in labs.
B. They have a positive effect on kids' emotions.
C. They cause children to become more emotional.D. The studies of them are often conducted in hospitals.
33.How did the investigators carry out the research? ______
A. By visiting and talking.
B. By making assumptions.
C. By grouping and comparing.
D. By analyzing samples from earlier research.
34.What does the last paragraph mainly tell us about the research? ______
A. Its finding. B. Its purpose. C. Its approach. D. Its reason.
35.What is the main idea of the text? ______
A. Narrative skills play a role in storytelling.
B. Listening to a story does benefit kids' health.
C. Storytelling is popular with kids and their parents.
D. Stories help kids communicate better with their parents.

When speaking of a party, it often means there will be a lot of fun. 36 This is especially true if you
are running it on a budget. But as long as you are wise enough, it is possible for you to throw a party even if you
don’t have deep pockets. Take these tips to help you.
Define your budget for the party. 37 For instance, if you only have 50 bucks, it is not a practical
idea to buy new plates, glasses and the like. In that case, your money need to be saved for more important things in
the party such as food and drink.
3 8 Seek the help of your friends to decide on a theme for the party. Set a date to make your own
invitations and decorations. You can also check the Web for imagination when thinking of great party ideas without
extra expense.
Ask for contributions from your guests. A party is not always something you have to shoulder all by yourself.
39 It is also a good idea to make a request for their support of items other than food such as napkins, and
paper plates. With their help, your party will have a variety of good foods and adequate kitchenware without ever
shouldering all the bills yourself. Don’t forget to show your appreciation.
Keep your attitude positive throughout the party. 40 Instead, entertain your guests with a smile, and
the relaxing atmosphere will turn the party into a success. Even if it is within a budget, the most important thing
about a party is to make it memorable and fun for everyone in attendance.A. Ask your friends to offer you a helping hand.
B. Get your imagination going for the party.
C. You can show your guests that you are enthusiastic.
D. You can ask your guests to bring their speciality to the event.
E. This way, you know what to buy for the party and what to set aside.
F. You are never supposed to wear an apologetic look for not having much.
G. This is not always the case, however, when it is your turn to throw a party.

67.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
It was early morning, yet already it had been a very bad day. One thing after another, the downward spiral (螺
旋) continued when a large bottle of orange juice slid from my hands and fell to the floor. Glass and sticky juice
splashed to the farthest corners of the kitchen. Shocked, I looked at the mess. Then I dropped heartbrokenly down
to the floor, my eyes filling with tears. The tears seemed to show that “today is just not my day.”
Bad day or not, things had to be done. Filled with anxiety and negative mental baggage, I got in my car to
drive into town. In the few minutes it took to travel to the bank I made a decision. I would be careful not to pass my
bad day off to anyone else. I would be friendly and polite. And I would NOT be angry when that careless driver
pulled quickly and rudely in front of me causing me to brake suddenly.
Standing in line at the bank, I was silently talking to myself. Actually, I was scolding myself. All of the events
that had accumulated and contributed to my bad day were, in reality, so very minor and trivial. I was over-reacting.
I was filled with self-pity. I tried to imagine the innumerable, individual lives that had been affected by terrorist
attacks, by war, by hurricanes, earthquakes, and other natural disasters.
For the second time that day my eyes filled with tears as I realized how disconnected I felt from all those
individuals who are trying to cope with truly miserable experiences in their lives.
They all seemed so distant and unknowable, and this justified and strengthened my belief that I was being self-
centered and selfish. I was sure that all my efforts to be a caring and loving person were in vain.
A voice broke through my mental distractions. Somehow I had mechanically finished my bank transaction (交
易) and the teller was trying to get my attention. “Young lady,” she was saying, gently, “Young lady!”
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
I looked up and into the eyes of the bank teller, a silver-haired grandmother with a gentle beauty.
