This year’s favorite books offer a mixture of advice on how to create a happier
and more compassionate society through shifting our worldview and improving our
social interactions.
Bittersweet
Writer Susan Cain describes bittersweet feelings as “a tendency to states of
longing and sorrow and a curious joy at the beauty of the world”.Embracing these
emotions can make our lives more meaningful.Such feelings can create motivation to
reach a renewed sense of purpose. While sometimes unpleasant , they can spur
spiritual growth and foster our connection with others.
Platonic
“Friendships are wrongly undervalued in our society,” writes psychologist
Marisa Franco. It’s friendships that provide us with a great sense of belonging and
happiness. Her book shows us how to go about it—by reaching out, offering affection
and generosity.Franco gives practical guidance on how to manage psychological
blocks to friendship, paving the way to deeper relationships.
Happier Hour
Many people feel they don’t have enough hours to do everything they’d like to
do.But researcher Cassie Holmes shows why this attitude is wrong -headed.She
encourages us to evaluate our current use of free time and how much pleasure we get
from our activities. Then, she offers evidence-based tips on how to use time more
wisely—by lessening technology use, developing relationships and experiencing
gratitude.
The Secret Life of SecretsIs keeping a secret a bad thing? In professor Michael Slepian’s book,“People
don’t like to be alone with their thoughts, and having a secret can cause feelings of
isolation and uncertainty.” Therefore,it’s probably good to find a different way to

Sometimes a book comes along that isn’t just“interesting”or“well done”—it’s a
book where it seems like the author looked into your brain and wrote a book
specifically for you.A book like that for me was released last week. It’s called 100
Things We’ve Lost to the Internet, written by editor Pamela Paul.
Paul lists 100 things we used to do that the Internet has either changed or taken
over completely:writing letters, printing newspapers, the joys of being bored,
and not having all the knowledge in the world in your pocket.
As I often accumulate random knowledge, certain entries on the list—Being the
Only One,Figuring Out Who That Actor Is—hit me where I live:
remembering detailed facts is no longer nearly as impressive when everyone has the
capability to find the answer in seconds. On and on the list goes, with every minor shift adding to the pile. What this book
does so well is illustrate the growth of that pile;while any individual item might be
no big deal, the collected set is significant. It’s a list of ways in which the world now
is different from the world then.
Obviously,Paul isn’t saying that everything back then was better.Time marches
on,after all,and it’s tough to argue against the many benefits that the Internet has
brought into our lives. But that isn’t really the point. It’s not about whether it used to be
better. It’s that it used to be different.
100 Things We’ve Lost to the Internet is a fun read for those of us who share
some of Paul’s memories and experiences. We remember what it was like and we like
to remember. The landscape has shifted , and no doubt it will shift again as
technology’s advancement continues apace. This book serves as a reminder of the
simple truth that when gains are made, sometimes something is lost.
4.What is the purpose of the text?
A.To review and recommend a good read.
B.To comment on the effect of the Internet.
C.To argue for the viewpoint of a new book.
D.To urge the readers to value what they have.
5.Which might be entries on Paul’s list?
A.Maps and Eye Contact B.E-pay and Compact Disks
C.Postcards and Homeschooling D.Photos and Washing Machines
6.What do the underlined words “hit me where I live” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A.Prove what I’m good at. B.Introduce how I grew up.
C.Describe the place I live in. D.Speak out what is on my mind.
7.What conclusion has the author drawn after reading Paul’s book?
A.Things in the past are better.
B.There’re no gains without pains.
C.The Internet is a double-edged sword.
D.Technology is constantly changing the world.

Honey,I Shrunk the Kids
Wayne Szalinski creates an electromagnetic shrinking machine.Naturally ,he
accidentally shrinks his own children , plus the kids from next door and then
unknowingly throws them in the trash. To become their normal size again, the six-
millimeter-tall children must make their way across the family’s yard and back to
the house. It’s something filled with danger when you’re smaller than an ant.An
absolute classic.

college football coach , he relocates the entire family causing upset among his
children.Kate’s book gets published, meaning she has to spend some time away from
the family and without her the Bakers’ lives are pure chaos.A classic comedy.

little over 90 minutes, director Pete Docter takes us on the journey of Carl,an old

Science fiction writers create imaginary worlds. The way things work in your
imaginary worlds will be based on actual science. So it’s important for you to be
familiar with the scientific principles and inventions that are related to your
creation. For example,if you’re writing about human living on a planet with zero
gravity, then you need to know the effects of zero gravity on the human body.
Then you have to figure out the exact rules of your imaginary worlds. And you
have to follow them.If humans are able to breathe underwater in Chapter 1,your
character can’t drown in a swimming pool in Chapter 3. The issue here is maintaining
your readers’ trust. That means the reader is willing to pretend along with you.If you
start out with an ordinary detective novel and then throw in someone breathing
underwater in the 6th chapter, you will pull the readers out of their imagination. The
same thing happens if you change the rules halfway.
Part of your preparation work for the novel is to map out its worlds in great
detail. You should decide the following issues : the history of the world , thegeography, what possibilities it offers, how everything works in this new reality,
and how all of these factors affect the way your characters think, feel, and react to
things. You don’t have to tell your readers all the rules in the first chapter. But you have
to let readers know enough to understand what’s going on.This also allows you to
work out logical problems and contradictions (矛盾) before you start writing.
When you are writing, remember to make it feel real. You are inviting readers to
visit a new world. They will want to be able to see, hear, feel, smell, and even
taste what it’s like.Whether your novel is about a world without disease or an
undiscovered planet, help your readers feel like they’re actually there.
11.What’s the relationship between actual science and science fiction?
A.Science fiction promotes the development of actual science.
B.Science fiction often reflects the development of actual science.
C.Actual science limits the imagination described in science fiction.
D.Actual science provides basic principles for science fiction.
12.The second paragraph is mainly developed by .
A.making comparisons B.giving examples
C.following the time order D.analyzing causes
13.Which of the following statements is TRUE?
A.It is necessary to do some scientific experiments before writing science fiction.
B.It is more difficult to write science fiction than ordinary detective novels.
C.Readers of science fiction actually pretend the writers’ rules are true.
D.It is great to leave some contradictions in your science fiction.

My favourite book is The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain.Tom
lives with his aunt Polly in a quiet street of St.Petersburg,Missouri.He’s a lively and
clever young boy,and he finds himself in many exciting adventures. He runs awaywith his two friends , Huck Finn and Joe , to an island in the middle of the
Mississippi River for several days. With Huck he goes looking for treasure, and with
Becky he gets lost in a cave. And finally, they find a box of gold.
My favourite scene in the book is when everyone thinks Tom is dead,he decides
to go to his own funeral(葬礼).He hides and watches for a time and then suddenly he
appears.Everyone is surprised to see him but they’re also pleased to see him alive.
Tom is the hero of the story, but there are other important characters.Huck is an
outsider and everyone is afraid of him.Becky is pretty with fair hair,Joe is Tom’s
best friend, and Injun Joe is the bad man of the story.
The theme of the story is about children growing up.It describes how strangers
are seen in small towns of America. Finally,it talks about freedom, social rules and
how people are punished for bad behaviour.
Why do I think The Adventures of Tom Sawyer is a great book?Mark Twain
wrote the story in 1876,but it’s still read and loved by people all over the world
today. And although it’s only a story,Twain wrote it in the everyday English of the
southern states of America in the 19th century,so it sounds very real.Today it’s
thought to be one of the greatest books in American literature.Go on—read it!I know
you’ll enjoy it,too.
15.Where does Tom run away with his two friends?
A.To a quiet street. B.To a small town.
C.To an island. D.To a forest.
16.Who is the best friend of Tom in the story?
A.Huck Finn. B.Joe.
C.Becky. D.Polly.
17.How did people feel when Tom appeared at his own funeral?
A.They were surprised and happy.
B.They were surprised and sad.
C.They were worried and excited.
D.They were frightened and happy.
18.What’s the writer’s purpose in writing the passage?A.To recommend the book to you.
B.To explain the history of America.
C.To tell us when Mark Twain wrote the story.
D.To explain why the story sounds very real.

Have you ever thought about what sand means to our lives? 1 ,but we are
always ignoring its contributions to our lives. However,as British geologist Michael
Welland once explained in his book on sand,“Without it,our world would be
dramatically different.”
Dutch designers Nadine Sterk and Lonny van Ryswyck were deeply inspired by
Welland’s book on sand. They hoped that people would never forget the close
relationships with the primary materials of our lives. In 2010,Nadine and Lonny
started their project called “To See a World in a Grain of Sand”. They collected sand
from beaches, rivers and mountains around the world. They fired the sand at high
temperatures. 2 .These colors came from movement, erosion and transformation
of thousands of years.Nadine and Lonny then made the melted sand into glass. The
glass’s design referenced Dutch glass and paintings of the 17th century. 3 ,
because they wanted people to understand the world by understanding the journey of
sand.
Last year,Nadine and Lonny’s works were displayed for the first time during
Dutch Design Week and won the Dutch Design Awards. 4 ,because their designs
not only challenged the traditions of today’s glass manufacturing industry, but also
called on people to identify more deeply with the places where they lived.
5 ,you can join them.Firstly, you collect a bottle of sand from your
favorite place and take a photo of that place. Then, you complete the form for your
sand sample and share your own story on Nadine and Lonny’s website. After that,
you should send the sand sample , the photo and the address to Nadine and
Lonny. Finally, you just need to wait for your own glass!
A.In the process, unique colors were shownB.The judges thought highly of their designs
C.It was able to repair itself on a regular basis
D.This natural material seems to be everywhere
E.If you are interested in Nadine and Lonny’s project
F.They also stamped the origin of the sand on the glass
