I. Grammar and Vocabulary (每题1分;共20分)
Section A
Several years ago, a co-worker invited me over for a classic social tradition: a game night. I don’t like board
games. When I’m hanging out with others, I much prefer the free flow of conversation 1 the structure
of competition. 2 someone starts explaining the game rules, my brain tends to involuntarily tune out, a
defense mechanism against unwanted and useless information.
So obviously, eager to make new friends. I told my co-work I was in.
The evening was disappointing. An alarmingly complex game was first explained and then repeated, upon
my request. I 3 (assure) that I’d “get it after a couple of rounds,” which never happened. I was so bad
that I was ruining everyone eles’s experience with my unpredictable plays and constant need 4
(remind) of what was happening.
5 these people kindly became my friends anyway, I was never invited back to another game
night. “We just know you’re not really a game person, ” one of them later told me, eyes 6 (slide)
sideward.
Not being a game person nowadays can make one feel like an exception. Board games, which in 2021 were a
$13. 4 billion global market, are surging in popularity. There are people who love socializing through games in
every town, 7 makes my resistance to them feel unacceptable. Maybe, I thought, I was missing 8
about the social value of games. Games can reveal people’s core qualities: how they react when they’re stressed,
how they cooperate in a team, or how they behave when they win or lose.
However, I still have a general sense 9 they’re a silly way to pass time. When I think about the
leisure activities I “indulge” in, such as cycling, they tend to have bonus benefits. Through cycling, my friends and
I can share experiences that simulate the variable conditions of life: joy and pain, uncertainty and achievement. We
can all reap rewards from bonding through playful activities: 10 we see as play just varies. I get that
now. But to be clear, there’s still no need to invite me to your game night.Section B

Zheng Secures Historic Tennis Gold for China
China’s women’s ace Zheng Oinwen has etched her name in tennis history after winning the country’s first
singles Olympic gold medal in Paris on Saturday, 11 her meteoric career rise with another major
accolade (荣誉).
China’s world No. 7 Zheng was the sixth 12 in the 64-draw Olympic tournament. She lived up to
her favorite status in the final against Donna Vekic of Croatia at the Roland Garros Stadium, breaking her 21st-
ranked 13 four times while conceding only one of her service games to prevail 6-2, 6-3 at the iconic site
of the red clay Grand Slam to win the gold medal.
It was only China’s second Olympic gold medal in tennis, following a women’s doubles title won by Li Ting
and Sun Tiantian at Athens 2004, and the first in singles.
After 14 the win with a forehand winner down the line, Zheng lay down on her back to rousing
cheers across the Court Philippe-Chatrier, soaking up the 15 moment for her own career and for the
sport’s profile in China.
It was the second Olympic tennis medal won by the Chinese delegation in Paris, after mixed doubles pair
Zhang Zhizhen and Wang Xinyu 16 a silver medal in Friday’s final, which was won by Czech team
Katerina Siniakova and Tomas Machac at the same 17 .
“Nothing can describe my feeling right now, it’s unreal. I’ve always been hoping to get a medal for China.
Finally I 18 it.” an emotional Zheng said during the on-court interview.

all my team members, my families and whoever supported me, not just for me.
I just fought every single match. There were two matches that I almost lost on my way to the final, especially
0-4 down in the second set against Iga (Swiatek) in the semis. I feel the energy of all the support, knowing that I
play for my country. I just never gave up and tried to find every single solution,” Zheng said of her 19
path to success. And for the celebration? The 21-year-old native of Hubei province just wants to join her family and enjoy
some home 20 .
“I haven’t thought about it yet. For sure to eat some Chinese food, after having eaten chicken and rice every
day here, nothing much of flavor,” she said with a grin.

Should period dramas reflect modern sensibilities?
Simon Jenkins
The most popular films of my youth were war films. They were about how Britain won a war—and that
could be any war you cared to mention. In my opinion, they were great fun and, mostly, patriotic 21 .
I’m a journalist and occasional historian, and something the two professions share is a respect for the 22
of truth. Both are in the business of bringing events to life through the power of fact, not falsification. They may
sometimes be 23 of distortion (歪曲) and thoughtless analysis, but to be plain wrong is unethical and
unprofessional. The gap between fact and fiction is one that should not be crossed - or if crossed, should stand
corrected.
Many playwrights, filmmakers and novelists 24 . To them, history is a stimulus to artistic licence,
material to be exploited and 25 for dramatic effect. Their considerations are audience appeal, profit and,
often, politics. They leave it to historians to worry about 26 . This, to me, is lying.
I have always found ‘ 27 ‘ (in which facts are the basis for fiction) hard to stomach. I can appreciate
‘docudrama’, which dramatises the events, or the novels of Hilary Mantel, as attempts to deepen our understanding
of the past. Mantel insisted that her goal was always to be as 28 as the facts allowed. She did not 29
create false events. The same was not true of The Crown and its much-documented faking of stories. The fact the
team behind the show took such pains to cast actors that 30 their real-life counterparts simply added a
touch of reality to the made-up story. The result was an audience 31 of what was true or false.
I appreciate that history—as with 32 —involves selection, and that selection itself can be
motivated by a desire to twist the truth. Each age puts pressure on historians to select material in a manner that
respects the 33 or bias (偏向) of nations, groups or individuals. The duty of the historian is to seebehind such bias. The task is to reveal what happened, why and how.
In an age of artificial intelligence and online ‘deep fakery’, the truth has never been more 34 .
The world of fiction has no need to be a parasite (寄生虫) on history: it has all of human imagination to supply it
with plots. Every work that claims to be ‘based on real events’ should, in my view, be identified as lies, and should
display a large ‘T’ or ‘NT’ —true or not true. Artistic licence should not be a (n) 35 to deceive.

Here’s a quick quiz. Person A does a favor for you. Person B asks you to do a favor for him. Who do you
tend to like more? Surprisingly, the answer is Person B.This quirk (怪癖) of human nature is known as the Ben
Franklin Effect.
Benjamin Franklin came across the phenomenon in 1736 when serving as a clerk to the Pennsylvania
Assembly. A powerful member didn’t care for Franklin and threatened to make life miserable for him. What to do?
Instead of winning him over with sweet talk, Franklin asked if he could borrow a rare and valuable book the man
owned. This request altered the man’s attitude and paved the way for their friendship. Franklin’s takeaway: “He that
has once done you a kindness will be ready to do you another, than he whom you yourself have obliged.”
Several studies have confirmed this. But how can we explain the Ben Franklin Effect? Some psychologists
refer to cognitive dissonance (失调). It’s difficult to hold two contradictory thoughts at the same time. It makes us
uncomfortable. We resolve this tension by changing our mind. “I don’t like Joe, but I am doing him a favor,” we
might think. “So maybe I do like him.”
While cognitive dissonance explains a lot, it alone doesn’t explain the Ben Franklin Effect. One 2015 study
found that it was, rather, the affiliative (亲和的) motive that the requests convey. That is, we humans want to
maintain good relations with other humans, and one way to achieve this is by doing favors for others. This explains
a lot about altruistic behavior. We like being useful and, by extension, we like those who give us the opportunity to
do so. It’s in our genes.
Yet there is much we still don’t know about the Ben Franklin Effect. Does it apply equally across cultures? Is
there a point beyond which asking a favor makes you less, not more likable? Asking to borrow a book is one thing;
asking to borrow a car is another.
39.Why does the author mention Benjamin Franklin’s experience?
A.To illustrate a dilemma in making choices. B.To suggest a way of striking up friendships.C.To stress the importance of strategic requests. D.To introduce the origin of the Ben Franklin Effect.

B.Increasing the chance of getting help in return.
C.Avoiding the discomfort from conflicting thoughts.
D.Establishing a cooperative community of shared trust.
41.What does the underlined word “altruistic” probably mean in paragraph 4?

Many have probably heard of Thoreau, even though his message of simplicity may sound old-fashioned.
Nowadays, smartphones flood us with text messages. Many consumers are buying the latest digital devices, from
tablets and fitness trackers to commercial drones. Simple living seems to be a thing of the past.
As a writer who declared the value of simplicity almost two centuries ago, Thoreau was a contrarian (叛逆
者) for his time. He lived during the height of the Industrial Age, distinguished by the rise of large factories,
expanding urban developments, and powerful machines such as steam engines.
Turned off by the constant hustle and bustle of his time, Thoreau withdrew from city life to live alone in the
woods. He brought with him only the necessities of life and wrote about this adventure in his book Walden. In
Walden, Thoreau is basically making a philosophical statement. We are not living deliberate or meaningful lives,
thanks (or no thanks) to modern technology. We created powerful machines to make life more convenient.
Unfortunately, these machines have done the opposite. In his words, “men have become the tools of their tools”.
That is to say, we are not the ones controlling technology. Technology is controlling us. Let me try updating
Thoreau’s message with a couple 21st-century examples. Every few minutes, smartphones may distract us with
messages. At least half of Americans check their phones several times an hour. Meanwhile, information overload
from social media can weaken our concentration and heighten confusion.
When technology causes that much distraction and confusion, it may be healthy to simplify life by reducing
technology overuse. Personally, I’ve done so in two ways. First, I use very little data on my phone and keep theapps on it to a minimum. The vast majority of the time, I only use my phone to call or text. Second, I quit most
social media. Sure, those two things aren’t as extreme as Thoreau withdrawing into the woods. Nevertheless,
they’re realistic moves I can make toward living a more meaningful life.
43.Which statement would Thoreau probably agree with?
A.Technology holds back our ambition.
B.Technology is key to a meaningful life.
C.Simplicity is possible in a tech-driven world.
D.Simplicity is outdated in modern times.
44.What was the primary reason for Thoreau’s withdrawing from city life?
A.To escape the harsh economic conditions of his time.
B.To throw himself into the completion of his masterpiece.
C.To experience a new and exciting lifestyle away from technology.
D.To find a quieter existence that allows for deeper reflection and purpose.
45.What is presented in the last paragraph of the text?
A.Theoretical models. B.Popular beliefs.
C.Practical measures. D.Realistic analyses.
46.What is the purpose of the passage?
A.To criticize the overuse of 21st-century modern technology.
B.To illustrate Thoreau’s ideas on simple living in the modern context.
C.To explore the role of technology in shaping contemporary lifestyles.
D.To examine the effects of reduced social media use on personal well-being.
Section C
Directions: Read the following passages. Fill in each blank with a proper sentence given in the box. Each
sentence can be used only once. Note that there are two more sentences than you need.
Do animals have feelings?
People often assign feelings to animals. That zoo polar bear’s vacant stare must mean he’s sad. The uh-oh
expression a dog flashes after knocking over the garbage indicates shame. But scientists haven’t determined
whether these human-like expressions really mean anything. After all, it’s very difficult to read a dog’s mind.
Scientists believe that certain brain cells in humans called spindle cells (棱形细胞) are responsible for
human social behavior and the interplay between thoughts and feelings. Studies have revealed that chimpanzee, dolphin and whale brains also possess spindle cells. 47
Even animals that don’t have spindle cells, such as dogs, have shown behaviors that can suggest a human-
like social sense. 48 Scientists report that this shows dogs are sensitive to human social cues and are able
to correctly interpret them. Still, this only proves that dogs know how to find food, not that they have feelings.
Observations of apes have also revealed behavior that appears to represent various human-like desires. In
some tests, chimpanzees demonstrate what looks like altruism (利他主义) helping their own kind and even other
species without the expectation of a reward.
49 In a recent study, a Barnard College researcher tested dogs to see if their guilty looks were
linked to actual bad behavior. Dogs were tempted with a treat and told by their owners not to eat it. The dog’s
owners weren’t allowed to see whether their pets had eaten the treat or not, but were told either that they did or that
they didn’t, and were then instructed to scold the dogs that disobeyed. The experimenters noted that scolded dogs
showed a guilty look whether or not they had actually done wrong.
50 A guilty look suggests a feeling of guilt in a human but not necessarily in a dog, according to
the Barnard research. Similarly, even apparent empathy (共情) behavior might not actually mean these feelings
are present in the brains of animals.
A.Although these are all animals that can act people-like, the presence of these cells does not mean that the
animals have feelings.
B.Anyone who claims to know what animals feel doesn’t have science on their side.
C.In recent experiments, dogs have shown that they know to follow a human’s pointed finger to find a food treat.
D.Many people think that empathy is a special emotion only humans show.
E.Other experiments have cast doubt that animal behavior can reliably signify an underlying feeling.
F.This illustrates the difficulty in accurately interpreting animal behavior as a marker of human-like feelings.

How to Be a Successful Team Leader?
Every well-organized team needs to have an outstanding leader with specific skills. Sometimes the leader’s
abilities can come to affect the whole team. Although we students are still young, it’s never too early to cultivateleadership skills.
A team consists of both leaders and followers. Neither side can exist and work effectively without the other.
What is essential to the role of leader is the ability to unite the whole team. A great leader enables their team to
achieve a common goal through the giving of clear directions and support. Meanwhile, everyone on a team also
desires personal success, so a balance can be hard to strike. If a leader doesn’t have fierce determination, the
followers will lose their confidence and things will not be done well.
What’s more, a successful and charming leader ought to be able to handle interpersonal relationships well.
They should be honest, fair, objective and impartial (公正的) when it comes to both rewards and punishments.
These kinds of leaders are trustworthy, and thus, the working atmosphere will only come to be improved. They are
role models who can have a strong influence on the whole team.
To become a powerful leader at school, students have to take the initiative in connecting with their fellow
students. Good communication skills allow people to build good relationships, which is an essential part of being a
good leader. If you find it hard to express your ideas clearly to those who you collaborate with, it may be rather
difficult for you to be a good leader.
It’s a well-known fact that, whatever field you wish to work in, leadership skills are necessary for anyone
who desires to have a successful career. So it’s never too early to train yourselves as promising future leaders.
