Yangrou paomo
Yangrou paonmo,or pita bread soaked in lamb soup,is another signature food of Xi'an.The main

A study of 8 different experiments showed that our brains tend to prefer addition rather than subtraction
when it comes to finding solutions—in many cases, it seems we just don’t consider the strategy of taking something
away at all.
The researchers found that this preference for adding was noticeable in three situations in particular: when
people were under higher cognitive (认知的) load, when there was less time to consider the other options, and
when volunteers didn’t get a specific reminder that subtracting was an option. In one of the experiments,
participants were asked to improve a Lego structure so that it was able to take more weight. Half the volunteers
were reminded that they could take away bricks as well as add them, and half weren’t. In the group that got the
reminder, 61 percent solved the problem by taking away a brick—which was a much faster and more efficient wayof making the structure stable. In the group that didn’t get the reminder, only 41 percent went for the removing
bricks approach.
“Additive ideas come to mind quickly and easily, but subtractive ideas require more cognitive effort,” says
psychologist Benjamin Converse, from the University of Virginia. “Because people are often moving fast and
working with the first ideas that come to mind, they end up accepting additive solutions without considering
subtraction at all.”
The researchers have a few ideas about what might be going on. Our brains might find additive changes easier
to process perhaps, or we might be associating adding with ideas of something that's bigger and therefore better in
our subconscious. There might also be associations in our minds with the current status being something that needs
to be maintained as much as possible—and taking something away is arguably more destructive to the current
status than adding something new.
The researchers say their work is important in a much broader sense: for institutions looking to streamline (简
化), for example, and even for the human race looking for ways to better manage the planet’s resources.
24. What does the underlined word “subtraction” in paragraph 1 refer to?
A. Removal. B. Moderation. C. Refusal. D. Solution.
25. In which situation do people prefer adding?
A. When they are under high pressure. B. When they lack cognitive ability.
C. When they are specially reminded. D. When they are hurried to decide.
26. What were participants required to do in the experiment?
A. Re-shape Lego bricks. B. Take Lego bricks away.
C. Move the Lego structure. D. Stabilize the Lego structure.
27. What is paragraph 4 mainly about?
A. The ways to make additive changes.
B. The effects of taking something away.
C. The reasons for brains preferring addition.
D. The importance of maintaining current status.

Extremely energetic light from space is an unexplained wonder. Scientists don’t know where that light
comes from, exactly. And now astronomers have spotted this light, called gamma (伽马) rays, at higher
energies than ever before.
You can’t see gamma rays with your eyes. They are much more energetic than the light that we can see.So you need a fancy detector to spot them. The Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory, LHAASO, is
an experiment in China. It searches for extremely high energy gamma rays.
Scientists have spotted 12 gamma-ray hot spots. These are parts of the sky from which the gamma rays
are sent out. Those hot spots show that our galaxy, the Milky Way, has powerful particle accelerators (加速
器). But those particle accelerators aren’t made by humans. Instead, they come from violent events in the
universe. They might be exploding stars, for example. Such violent events make electric and magnetic fields,
which can speed up protons (质子) and electrons. Those fast particles can then produce gamma rays with a
lot of energy. That can happen when protons interact with other matter in space, for example.
Scientists aren’t sure what could produce gamma rays with the extreme energies observed. But the new
observations point to two possibilities. One hot spot was associated with the Crab Nebula. That’s the remains
of an exploded star. Another possible source was the Cygnus Cocoon. That's a region where massive stars are
forming. The stars send out intense winds in the process.
LHAASO is located on Haizi Mountain in China’s Sichuan province. It is not yet fully operational. It's
due to be completed later this year. Then, it could find even more gamma rays.
28.What can we learn about gamma rays?
A.They are invisible.
B.They are often ignored.
C.They contain little energy.
D.They are used to explore universe.
29.Why are some examples used in paragraph 3?
A.To make the explanation lively.
B.To help understand the Milky Way.
C.To illustrate the universe is expanding.
D.To show how gamma rays might be produced.
30.Which word can describe the astronomical observation mentioned in this text?
A.Disappointing. B.Unconfirmed. C.Accurate. D.Exciting.
31.What is a suitable title of this text?
A.Gamma Rays Come from Multiple Sources
B.The Universe Is Exploding with Great Energy
C.Light from Space Has Recorded-Breaking Energy
D.Gamma Rays Can Only Be Seen by AstronautsD
Notpla is a London-based firm that makes a seaweed- based substitute for single use plastic
packaging.Although some of Notpla's products are suitable to be eaten, they are designed to be dissolved (溶
解) after usage. The company s film wrap is made of seaweed lining instead of a conventional plastic based
coating. This makes the film fully biodegradable and ideal for use as packaging for cupboard and bathroom
supplies like coffee and toilet paper.
According to the United Nations, 331 million kilograms of plastic garbage is produced annually around
the world.Roughly 60% of the estimated 9.15 billion tons of plastic produced since the early 1950s has been
taken to landfills or abandoned outdoors.
Plastics harm the water, the air, and our bodies. Many experts agree that single-use plastics are
unnecessary and dangerous. Some governments and towns in the Unite States have taken action.New York has
banned most plastic shopping bags, while plastic straws (吸管) have been banned in Miami Beach.Overseas,
India stated in August that it plans to put a wide ban on single-use plastics this upcoming summer, with the
European Union already implementing this ban.
Seaweed comes in a variety of species and can be harvested or farmed.Norpla uses plants that have been
farmed.Rodrigo Garcia Gonzalez and Pierre Paslie, the inventors of Notpla, initially considered seaweed as a
solution to the world's plastic problem for several reasons.Seaweed is abundant and grows
quickly.Additionally it doesn't compete with land crops and is highly favored for its ability to remove some
waste products like carbon from the atmosphere.
In cooperation with the online food ordering service Just Eat, the startup recently tested its product. Last
year, the two companies handed out 30,000 takeaway boxes at various UK restaurants, Plans are in the works
to offer the boxes across Europe in 2022.Norpla's team intends to replace single use plastic in the supply
chain more generally as they scale. The company recognizes the difficulty of such a job given the volume of
plastics consumed around the world.
32.How does the author mainly develop paragraph 2?
A. By comparing facts.
B. By presenting figures.
C. By raising questions.
D. By giving examples.
33.What can best replace the underlined word "implementing”in paragraph 3?
A. lifting B. performing C. opposing D. protecting34.What does paragraph 4mainly talk about?
A. The wide use of seaweed
B. The next goal of the new study.
C. The huge market of the plastic bags.
D. The advantages of choosing seaweed
35.What does the company think of its plan to replace the whole single use plastic?
A. It will be unpractical.
B. It will be richly rewarded
C. It will be a little tough.
D. It will be rather successful.

第二节(满分25分)
67.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
When I was in middle school, my social studies teacher asked me to enter a writing contest. I said no without
thinking. I did not love writing. My family came from Brazil, so English was only my second language. Writing
was so difficult and painful for me that my teacher had allowed me to present my paper on the sinking of the
Titanic by acting out a play, where I played all the parts. No one laughed harder than he did.
So, why did he suddenly force me to do something at which I was sure to fail? His reply: “Because I love your
stories. If you’re willing to apply yourself, I think you have a good shot at this.” Encouraged by his words, I agreed
to give it a try.
I chose Paul Revere’s horse as my subject. Paul Revere was a silversmith (银匠) in Boston who rode a horse at
night on April 18, 1775 to Lexington to warn people that British soldiers were coming. My story would come
straight from the horse’s mouth. Not a brilliant idea, but funny; and unlikely to be anyone else’s choice.
What did the horse think, as he sped through the night? Did he get tired? Have doubts? Did he want to quit? I
sympathized immediately. I got tired. I had doubts. I wanted to quit. But, like Revere’s horse, I kept going. I
worked hard. I checked my spelling. I asked my older sister to correct my grammar. I checked out a half dozen
books on Paul Revere from the library. I even read a few of them.
,
When I handed in the essay to my teacher he read it, laughed out loud, and said, “Great. Now, write it again.”
I wrote it again, and again and again. When I finally finished it, the thought of winning had given way to the
enjoyment of writing. If I didn’t win, I wouldn’t care.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
A few weeks later, when I almost forgot the contest, there came the news.
