I have worked as a keeper at the National Zoo, Paris for 11 years. Spot and Stripe are the first tiger cubs that
have ever been born here. Globally, a third of Sumatran cubs in zoos don't make it to adulthood, so I decided to
give them round-the-clock care at home.
I've got two children—the younger one, Kynan, was extremely happy about the tigers arriving - but all of us
really looked forward to being part of their lives and watching them grow. I wasn't worried about bringing them
into my home with my wife and kids. These were cubs. They weighed about 2.5 kg and were so small that there
was absolutely no risk.
As they grew more mobile, we let them move freely around the house during the day, but when we were asleep
we had to contain them in a large room, otherwise they'd get up to mischief. We'd come down in the morning to
find they'd turned the room upside down, and left it looking like a zoo.
Things quickly got very intense due to the huge amount of energy required to look after them. There were some
tough times and I just felt extremely tired. I was grateful that my family was there to help. We had to have a bit of a
production line going, making up “tiger milk”, washing baby bottles, and cleaning the floors.
When Spot and Stripe were four months old, they were learning how to open doors and jump fences, and we
knew it really was time for them to go. It was hard for us to finally part with them. For the first few days, Kynan
was always a bit disappointed that the cubs weren't there.
I'm not sad about it. I'm hands-on with them every day at the zoo, and I do look back very fondly on the time
that we had them.
24. Why did the author bring the tiger cubs home?
A. To ensure their survival. B. To observe their differences.
C. To teach them life skills. D. To let them play with his kids.
25. What do the underlined words “get up to mischief” mean in paragraph 3?
A. Behave badly. B. Lose their way. C. Sleep soundly. D. Miss their mom.
26. What did the author think of raising the tiger cubs at home?
A. Boring. B. Risky. C. Costly.D. Tiring.
27. Why did the author decide to send Spot and Stripe back to the zoo?
A. They frightened the children. B. They became difficult to contain.C. They annoyed the neighbours. D. They started fighting each other.

Plant owners know just how difficult it can be to figure out what they need, especially when leaves start
browning or drying. But it turns out that plants may have been telling you all along. A new study found that when
plants are stressed, they produce specific sounds that identify what’s wrong.
Previous studies had shown that plants shake when under stress. But for years, scientists have argued whether
those shakes become sound waves (声波). By studying tomato and tobacco plants in a lab container inside a
greenhouse, researchers at Tel Aviv University discovered that it’s true — plants scream out for help through
airborne ultrasonic(超声波).
“We found that plants usually let out sounds when they are under stress and that each plant and each type of
stress is associated with a specific identifiable sound,” researchers said. In a news release from the university.
“While imperceptible to the human ear, the sounds emitted(发出)by plants can probably be heard by various
animals, such as bats, mice, and insects.””Human adults can only hear frequencies (频率) up to 16 kilohertz (千
赫).” researchers said, “but ultrasonic microphones placed about 10 centimeters from each plant used in the study
detected sounds at frequencies between 20 and 250 kilohertz.” Those recordings were analyzed by special AL
algorithms that could differentiate between plants and the types of sounds they were emitting. This laid a solid
foundation for the research and made the new discoveries possible.
Researchers found the more stressed plants were, the more they screamed. “Our findings suggest that the
world around us is full of plant sounds, and that these sounds contain information—for example about water
shortage or injury,” Hadany said. “All we need is the ‘right tools’—such as sensors that tell growers when plants
need watering.”
This could prove particularly beneficial in the agriculture industry, as researches noted in their publication that
“more precise irrigation can save up to 50% of the water expenditure and increase the output.” This ability could
only get more important as climate change continues to increase the intensity and frequency of droughts and the
world continues to struggle with food security issues.
28. What was the scientists’ attitude to “plants producing sounds” before?
A. Debatable B. Supportive C. Negative D. Objective
29. What does the underlined word “imperceptible” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Beneficial B. Unbearable C. Adjustable D. Undetectable
30. What contributes more to the new findings according to the researchers?
A. Untiring pursuit B. Water shortage C. High-tech means D. Agricultural development31. What is the best title for the best?
A. Humans Are Shaking Off Food Crisis B. Plants Cry Out for Help When Under Stress
C. AI Helps Plants Adapt to Climate Change D. New Species Are Growing with Little Water
D
A rose by any other name may smell as sweet, but a chocolate chip cookie labeled “consumer complaint”
won’t taste as good as the exact same product described as “ new and improved”, a new study suggests.
In the study, researchers from Ohio State University labeled identical saltine crackers(苏打饼干)and
chocolate chip cookies as either “new and improved”, “factory typical”, or “consumer complaint”. Then they
recruited(招募)120 participants aged 18 to 70, and asked them ton taste the food samples and evaluate each on a
range of qualities.
After each lite, participants indicated their on overall liking of the sample on a 9-point scale from “dislike
extremely” to “like extremely”. They also completed additional ratings of positive and negative features that
assessed, for example, how fresh the cookies were and the intensity of the cookies’ flavor.
According to the results, the overall liking scores were significantly lower for samples labeled “consumer
complaint” compared to “new and improved” . With the saltines, the complaint scores were also significantly lower
than ratings for the crackers labeled “factory typical”. In addition, participants generally gave the “consumer
complaint” crackers and cookies fewer marks for positive qualities and more hits for negative features.
“With the negative contextualized messaging, there were more negative features selected. People had a more
negative opinion of it,” said Christopher Simons, senior author of the study. “The positive messaging inclined(倾
向于)to being more positive, but not nearly as much. We had both negative and positive inclinations, but it is
obvious that the negative bias was much bigger.”
“There could be a lesson here for product developers,” Simons said. “Rather than stressing positive features
for a new product idea, perhaps there would be value in getting rid of what consumers perceive(察觉)as
negative and adjusting accordingly.”
“If people are more sensitive to those taints(污点), we can use it to our advantage as it relates to food,” he
said. “Take care of the negative first and you’re probably going to have a more successful product.”
32. What is the focus of the new study?
A. Consumers’ expectations for cookies.
B. The right way to label a new product.
C. Consumers’ complaints about new products.
D. The influence of labels on consumers’ opinions.33. How did participants react to the “consumer complaint” samples?
A. They were unwilling to taste the samples at first.
B. They tended to be more curious about the samples.
C. They tried to discover the samples’ positive features.
D. They focused more on the samples’ negative.
34. What does Simons advise product developers to do?
A. To ask for consumers’ advice frequently.
B. To choose a good name for their products.
C. To remove things consumers find negative.
D. To strengthen the positive feature of their products.
35. What would be the most suitable title for the text?
A. Products of good quality can sell themselves
B. Just two words could ruin the taste of a cookie
C. You should buy good quality instead of a good name
D. You don’t have to take consumer complaints too seriously

How to Deal with Nosy People
They can come in the form of friends, relatives or strangers. The thing about nosy people is that they don’t

want to hurt them, but you may not want to share everything, either. ____36____
Respond. Do not react.
When someone starts asking personal questions one after the other, you might get confused as to why he or
she is asking all those questions and what you should do. This confusion can then turn into discomfort. When you
are in this situation, remind yourself to slow down. ____37___ Instead, be mindful of the situation and try to
respond consciously.
Answer them reasonably without revealing too much.
One great strategy is to give a satisfactory answer without giving away too many details. You will satisfy their
curiosity and maintain your personal boundaries at the same time. _____38___ For instance, your loved one might
ask, “Hey! I heard you had a fight with your husband. What happened?” In response, you could say, “Oh, nothing
serious. We are fine.” This will let them know you are doing fine._____39____
Sometimes, you just don’t feel like answering the other person’s questions. It could be because they have no
business knowing the details or because the question annoys you. So, if someone asks you a personal question, you
could politely decline to answer.
Show a lack of enthusiasm.
____40____ It tells the other person whether you are interested in talking to them. So, if you want to
communicate that you don’t appreciate them being nosy, you can do so with your body language. How do you do
this? Just show a lack of enthusiasm.

B. Politely decline to answer.

Walking along the Erie Canal, I saw two women coming towards me. I thought they must be mother and
daughter. The daughter reached into her pocket and handed her mom a snack. They both laughed.
I started to think of my mother. She got dementia (痴呆)in the early stage. How could I leave her to take care
of herself? I was a wife and a mother who worked full-time. The answer was simple: I couldn't.I knew I had to act
to keep her safe just like she protected me when she took my tiny hand and walked me to the kindergarten.
I came up with the idea of seeking a college student for help. Living close to a college, I contacted someone in
Student Services. I needed a responsible student to live with my mom free of charge. Luckily, the college
representative found one for me and got us in contact.
We met at a local store. Walking in, I saw her before she saw me. On the table sat the College' Admissions
Handbook. “Could she be as nervous as I am?” I asked myself. With every step I took forward,I felt another
pushing me back.
“Hi, I'm Hannah,” I said, reaching out my hand.
“Amanda,” she said with a smile.
We both felt a bit awkward, but I still asked, “Tell me something about yourself.” “I'm from Kenya. I hope togo to college to be a nurse, but I can't afford the dorm,” she said, tears in her eyes.
I took a deep breath and said slowly,“My mom has dementia. I need someone to be my eyes and ears. That
person would get a free room and free access to the Internet, living with my mother.”
More tears from Amanda. Then she said, “I know you don't know me, but I'm very responsible.I would never
do any harm to your mother, and I want so badly to be a nurse.” We talked a lot and finally I believed her and gave
her my mother’s address.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
