B
Naturalist Enzo Suma, who is now 40, lives in
Puglia, a region in southern Italy whose long coastline faces the Adriatic Sea. Floating waste
accumulates in this relatively enclosed part of the Mediterranean, unlike the open ocean, where the
waste tends to be spread over a vast area. Feeling concerned about that, Suma makes it a habit to
pick up the washed-up waste along the shore, especially after big winter storms.
One day, Suma was walking along the beach near his home when he discovered a bottle of
Coke. Suma noticed on the bottle that the price, clearly printed on the bottom, was in lire, a
currency (货币) that hadn’t been used in Italy since it was replaced by the euro in 2002. Could a
plastic container have well survived in the Mediterranean, he wondered, for about two decades?
That led him to founding the Archeoplastica museum. It has a collection of about 500 unique
pieces recovered from Italian shores and the Coke bottle is the first one of them. All collection
demonstrates the unsettling life force of plastic waste in the environment. “Seeing that a product
people may have used 30, 40, or 50 years ago remains still unchanged, you’ll feel different. It’s a
great shock,” Suma said to a reporter. So Suma often exhibits selected pieces from the
Archeoplastica collection at local schools around his hometown of Ostuni.
“The playful side of the work allows you to arrive at the less beautiful side of things,” Suma
acknowledged. “Plastic is a kind of useful substance. But it’s unthinkable that a water bottle, made
from a material designed to last so long, can be used for just a few days—or even minutes—before
becoming garbage. Clean the beaches. Clean the oceans. Recycle. But if we are still throwing outplastics, none of those are going to be long-term solutions.”
24.What’s Suma’s concern about his living place?
A.Its long coastline is disappearing. B.Big storms frequently hit the area.
C.Floating waste spreads over a vast area. D.The waste pollution on shore is worsening.
25.What can be learned about the objects in the Archeoplastica museum?
A.They have a history of more than half a century.
B.They were quite valuable before turning into waste.
C.They’re more like educational exhibits than garbage.
D.They have stronger life force than ordinary plastic products.
26.Which of the following can best describe Enzo Suma?
A.Creative, devoted and socially responsible. B . Enthusiastic, ambitious and
adventurous.
C.Generous, cautious and humorous. D.Curious, efficient and playful.
27.What does Suma intend to tell us by his words in the last paragraph?
A.The birth of plastics has greatly served humans.
B.The key to tackling the plastic pollution is to stop littering.
C.The plastic problem can be solved by cleaning and recycling.
D.People should be more aware of the powerful functions of plastics.
【答案】24.D 25.C 26.A 27.B
that...”,而前文提到“Floating waste accumulates in this relatively enclosed part of the
Mediterranean, unlike the open ocean, where the waste tends to be spread over a vast area(漂浮
根据第三段对Archeoplastica博物馆的介绍,“It has a collection of about
500 unique pieces recovered from Italian shores and the Coke bottle is the first one of them. All
collection demonstrates the unsettling life force of plastic waste in the environment.
But if we are still throwing out plastics, none of those are
going to be long-term solutions
In 2020, Pink launched the
World Regret Survey, the largest survey on the topic ever undertaken. With his research team, Pink
asked more than 15, 000 people in 105 countries, “How often do you look back on your life and
wish you had done things differently?” Most of them said regret was at least an occasional part of
their life. Roughly 21 percent said they felt regretful all the time. Only 1 percent said they never
felt regretful.
If you are of the “no regrets” school of life, you may think that all this regret is a recipe for
unhappiness. But that isn’t the case. Letting yourself be overwhelmed by regret is indeed bad for
you. But going to the other extreme may be even worse. To extinguish your regrets doesn’t free
you from shame or sorrow but causes you to make the same mistakes again and again. To truly get
over our guilt requires that we put regret in its proper place.
Uncomfortable as it is, regret is an amazing cognitive feat. It requires that you go back to a
past scene. Imagine that you acted differently to change it, and with that new scene in mind, arrive
at a different present-and then, compare that fictional present with the one you are experiencing in
reality. Not all regrets are the same, of course. Pink says they come in four basic varieties, and an
instance of regret may involve just one combination.
Many connection regrets overlap (重叠) with moral regrets, which can come about after you
go against your own values. For example, you may pride yourself on being a loving person, and
thus regret not living up to this image in the relationship you harmed, Moral regrets can also
involve just yourself. Maybe you regret not living up to your commitment to your health when
you ate a whole pizza or skipped the gym.
If not analyzed and managed, any variety of regret can be harmful to your well-being. Regret
is linked to depression and anxiety, and excessive regret can adversely affect your immune system.
But regret doesn’t have to be put aside and ignored.
28.What could be concluded from Pink’s research?
A.Half of the people felt regretful. B.Most people lived without regrets.
C.None could live a life without regrets. D.The majority of the people had regrets.
29.What does the underlined word “extinguish” in paragraph 2 mean?
A.Admit. B.Destroy. C.Treasure. D.Encounter.
30.What is paragraph 4 mainly about?
A.The harm of moral regrets.
B.The importance of commitment.C.The relationship between regrets and values.
D.The connection between reality and imagination.
31.What might the author continue talking about?
A.Types of regrets. B.Causes of regrets.
C.Benefits of experiencing regrets. D.Ways of dealing with regrets.
Most of them said regret was at least an occasional part of
their life.(他们中的大多数人说,遗憾至少是他们生活中偶尔出现的一部分。)”
Letting yourself be overwhelmed by regret is indeed bad for you.
But going to the other extreme may be even worse.(让自己被遗憾淹没确实对你不好。
根据文章第四段“Many connection regrets overlap (重叠) with moral
regrets, which can come about after you go against your own values.(许多人际关系上的遗憾与

根据文章最后一段“But regret doesn’t have to be put aside and ignored.(但

Students with dyscalculia experience difficulty in
mathematics and number-based learning. These students can have trouble grasping meanings of
numerical symbols or understanding spatial processing such as the rotation(旋转) of an object in
their mind.
Nationwide, about 15 percent of students have been screened for the disability, yet many
more seem to be struggling. According to a nationally representative survey in April 2023, about
40 percent of math teachers nationwide say that their students are performing below grade level in
math.
While the term “dyscalculia” was coined in the 1940s, it did not become more widely known
until the 1970s. Research on the disorder picked up in the 1990s with the widespread use of MRI
technology, but it’s still not widely understood, according to advocates.
Some adults with dyscalculia spoke about what it was like to struggle in K-12 schools with a
disability that was largely unrecognized and how they had to learn to accept their disability andget the help they need.
Navigating growing up alongside academic demands is a difficult phase of life for anyone.
“The hardest part of having dyscalculia in my K-12 experience was dealing with a disability on
top of the normal aspects of growing up,” Cladek said. “Growing up with dyscalculia greatly
affected myself-worth and not feeling like I am enough,” said Cladek, who is now a college
student. “If l could only be able to fit in with the rest of the kids and not have this anxiety and
frustration every time I look at a math problem on my worksheet, then I’ll be enough, which was a
common thought I had.”
While receiving the diagnosis can be scary, it is actually helpful. Some said the diagnosis can
bring a sense of relief after struggling for so long. “I literally broke down in tears, because my
entire life I was telling myself, ‘I’m stupid,’”Hadbah said. Pikula, who was diagnosed dyscalculia
in her K-12 career and now is a social media manager, offered words of encouragement to
students who may be going through similar experiences. “People with dyscalculia can become
engineers, and they can become scientists.”
32.What can we learn about “dyscalculia”?
A.About 40% students are experiencing dyscalculia nationwide.
B.Its general recognition is 40 years later than its first appearance.
C.Students with dyscalculia refuse to memorize numerical symbols.
D.Students with dyscalculia struggle more with abstract math problems.
33.According to advocates, what contributes to researching on “dyscalculia”?
A.Application of technology. B.Most patients’ strong appeal.
C.National math teachers’ demand. D.Public awareness of learning disabilities.
34.What does the author want to say by mentioning Cladek’s experience?
A.Cladek has fantastic memories of schooling.
B.It’s better to have dyscalculia diagnosed earlier.
C.Growing up with dyscalculia is a big challenge.
D.Academic demands outweigh struggling with dyscalculia.
35.In which part of a website may this text appear?
A.Culture. B.Education. C.Fashion. D.Psychology.

Different countries have wildly different forms of greeting.
In the USA, when you pass by someone you know, a nod is acceptable, and you usually
shake hands with someone you first meet. But in Latin countries, a firm handshake 56
(consider) rude. In my home country, Mauritius, when people meet, they usually kiss each other
57 the cheeks. This is also common in France, 58 the act is called faire la bise.
However, this is not 59 universal rule.
During my first week in the USA, I kissed every single girl I met. My friends had to tell me
that that was inappropriate, 60 (leave) me in great embarrassment. What is common here,
however, is for friends 61 (hug) each other – something I was not used to. Hugs always
make me 62 (frighten) because I don’t really like that. This may seem strange since even
kissing 63 (stranger) is normal in my country. Now that I think about it, I hate cheek-
kissing as well.
Wouldn’t it be 64 (enjoy) to have a greeting code that is 65 (wide)
acceptable? I’m not saying we should start doing that, but we can surely do something to avoid
misunderstanding.

Living in the shadow of my two elder sisters at college who already had their lives planned
out since they were little, I was always undecided about everything. As a teenager, I was fickle (反
I would like one thing for a week and then hate it the next. But I was constantly
searching for the beginning of the rainbow. Changing my dream from a vet to an astronaut, I
thought there were various options available to me. However, my parents would shake their heads
and repeatedly asked me such questions as, “Why can’t you be more like your sisters? What are
you going to do with your life? Aren’t you interested in anything at all?” After a couple of shrugs
(耸肩), my parents usually stopped talking. I was not sure if they gave up or anticipated my dull
reactions. I often responded, “I couldn’t answer all of your questions now.”
Actually, my parents just had high expectations that never seemed to be fulfilled. Plus, like
other parents, they just wanted to give the best to me and expected me to achieve success. The
arguments with my parents seemed childish. One day, my mother made her thoughts clear, “Yourgrades aren’t high enough. No schools are going to want you, dear. We didn’t pay so much money
for nothing.” Hesitating for a while, I said, “No matter what you say, I believe I will enter a good
college.” Still, I let my emotions control myself.
Certainly, I had never planned not to go to college. After another debate with my mom, I
decided to make a change. No longer would I sit back and let my parents mistake me for a bad
boy. It was time to take action.
I knew it was a crucial year at high school. Releasing my feelings, I began to collect all the
knowledge I had learned and review it with all my heart. I didn’t argue with my parents any more,
but instead turned to my sisters for help and tried my best to study. Finally, I took the national
college entrance examination with ease and confidence.

A few days later, I received a call from my school, saying my college acceptance letter
had arrived. Then I hurried to the school with my parents. It was beyond my wildest dream till
that moment. As a matter of fact, I doubted then whether I was in the dream. I normally dreaded
the long walk to the school. But that day was different. There seemed to be something in the air,
an electric current, connecting my body to the letter. When I got it, I was really afraid that the
envelop was empty. But there was a white package inside. With my heart beating faster, I
wondered whether it could really be what was expected.
My parents excitedly said behind me, “Well, open the envelop!” What I grabbed in my handscontained everything I had been waiting for. Slowly, I opened it and a flash of
CONGRATULATIONS in bold bright letters caught my eyes. A feeling of happiness and relief
rushed through my body. I was holding my first offer from a good college. Needless to say, it
wouldn’t have been possible if it weren’t for the countless hours of studying and writing, but most
importantly, my parents’ constant reminders, in fact, were the best form of education for me.
“Thank you, Mom and Dad!” I said gratefully.
