(2023秋·广西·高三南宁二中校联考开学考试)Last year, my Singapore-based sister
insisted my mother and I join her for the Christmas. My mum, a fearless woman, would get
strangely nervous on flights. Perhaps the only thing that convinced her to overcome her fears was
the chance to piece together our declining bond.
Growing up, moments with Mum were painfully short-lived because I spent most time at the
boarding school, reuniting only during the holidays. Every year, she would eagerly await my
return, which would always lead to constant loving scenes. Those cherished moments were
gradually vanishing as I moved away for university. Soon, our relationship became tense. She
seemed unable to comprehend me and her stubborn and old-fashioned advice forced me to shut
myself. But the more I pulled away, the more I felt a longing for the bond that had grown so dim.
Perhaps Singapore would give us a chance to breathe it back to life.
I assumed the immersive exhibits at Art Science Museum would refresh my mother, who was
an art student. However, I was surprised when she just turned her nose up at the Bruges Whale, a
sculpture using plastic waste to raise awareness about ocean pollution. “It’s art, Mum! Be more
appreciative.” I defended.Disheartened by the distance between us, I led her to the kid’s zone. We signed up for a joint
sketching activity, hoping that would help us connect. As our creative juices flowed, our faded
relationship began to take on the hues and shades of something sincere and beautiful.
“Look!” she excitedly pointed towards a digital screen that displayed our creations. “That
one’s ours.” Mum went up and reached out, touching the fish as it moved its tail back and forth in
the virtual tank.
Looking around, I saw children sharing moments with their parents, and my own childhood
flashed back. That rare instance where she let slip an inner innocence and delight at a new
experience revealed the little girl in her, who was like me, had lost a vital connection to
responsibilities of motherhood.
“Our time together was like that of friends. You were my mother, and I’m a child following
you around.” My mum said to me with a smile.
24.What made Mum accept the visit to Singapore?
A.The resolve to overcome the nervousness on flight.
B.The desire to restore relationship with her children.
C.The sincere invitation of my Singapore-based sister.
D.The expectation for Art Science Museum as an artist.
25.What is the attitude of Mum towards the Bruges Whale?
A.She felt it a huge waste to make it from plastic.
B.She showed a great interest in this work of art.
C.She didn’t think it good enough to be exhibited.
D.She considered it beneficial to ocean protection.
26.What can we learn from the sketching activity?
A.It revealed Mum’s inner ignorance like a girl.
B.It explored causes for faded bond between families.
C.It let Mum totally lose responsibilities of motherhood.
D.It provided an opportunity to share moments with families.
27.What do Mum’s words imply in the last paragraph?
A.A good medicine tastes bitter. B.Life has indeed come full circle.
C.Actions speak louder than words. D.Nothing is impossible to a willing mind.
C
(2023·广西南宁·南宁二中校考模拟预测)There is nothing more nutritious than mother’s
milk, which is packed with vitamins, nutrients, antibodies and other bioactive proteins (蛋白质)
designed to help newborn babies grow.
Now, Maolac, a start-up based in Northern Israel, has successfully recreated the healthful
characteristics of human breast milk by using the highly nutritious milk of cows that have just
given birth. Maolac’s founder Maya Otmazgin said the inspiration for their product came to herwhile she was nursing her first child. “Mother’s milk can provide different nutrition for a small
human being and I realized we could create something new inspired by it,” she said.
Otmazgin and her team began by mapping the composition of breast milk, figuring out which
proteins do what. They discovered that there are more than 1,500 bioactive proteins in human
breast milk. The next step of the process was to find a natural material made up of proteins that
matched the make-up of human breast milk. For that, the team used a special algorithm (计算程
序) to match the proteins in breast milk to the ones in the bovine colostrum (牛初乳) and found a
95 percent similarity between the two materials.
The final product is a protein powder that can be added to food for people of all ages. The
company plans to initially market their product to athletes to help them improve their recovery
ability, and then to the elderly to foster improved mobility and a more active lifestyle. The product
could also eventually be used to help people who suffer from diseases.
Jon Medved, CEO of OurCrowd, one of Maolac’s funders, said that the use of bovine
colostrum is “the perfect example of the circular economy in practice”. Every year billions of
liters of bovine colostrum are thrown away by the dairy industry. This means that using bovine
colostrum is not only far more economical for Maolac than using other natural materials, but most
importantly, their product is also sustainable and environmentally friendly.
28.What is the function of the first paragraph?
A.To introduce the topic. B.To provide background information.
C.To attract readers’ attention. D.To show the importance of mother’s milk.
29.What gave Otmazgin the idea of making their product?
A.Her study of breast milk. B.Her experience of breast-feeding.
C.Her knowledge about cows. D.Her enthusiasm for innovation.
30.Who will first benefit from the new product?
A.Athletes. B.Babies. C.Patients. D.The elderly.
31.What is the text mainly about?
A.A star-up in Israel. B.The founder of Maolac.
C.A new product inspired by mother’s milk. D.Bovine colostrum.
D
(2023·广西·校联考模拟预测)Tell me if this sounds familiar: You’re trying to get some
work done, and you find yourself continually picking up your cell phone. In frustration, you might
slam the phone down beside you and swear to leave it alone—theoretically allowing you to focus
on what you’re doing. Right now my phone is sitting next to me untouched. But have I really
protected myself from its distractions or its ability to impact my mind?
The answer is no, according to a well-known study in the Journal of the Association for
Consumer Research from 2017 entitled “Brain Drain (认知流失): The Mere Presence of One’s
Own Smartphone Reduces Available Cognitive Capacity.”Cognitive and social psychologist Adrian Ward and his colleagues proposed the “brain drain
hypothesis” by showing that just having a phone next to you could impact cognition—specifically,
working memory, or the mental system that helps us hold information about what we’re currently
doing at a given moment.
The way we measure it is by having people remember words and solve math problems at the
same time. And the idea there is that those are two very different cognitive skills, word memory
and math problems, but they’re tapping into that same general cognitive resource. In those
experiments, people either had their phones on a desk, in their pockets or bags, or in the next
room. The farther away a person’s phone was, the better they did on those tasks. Even when
you’re not consciously thinking about your phone, the process of not thinking about your phone
requires some cognitive resources.
This was an interesting, though slightly concerning, finding that led to more studies on how
the presence of our smartphones might be influencing how well we’re able to think. But in a new
meta-analysis that looked at data from 27 different brain drain studies, the story of the brain drain
hypothesis has gotten a little more complicated. If it’s just sitting next to you while you’re
working, is that a problem or not? And I think that’s quite an important question to answer, to
know more about.
32.What’s the purpose of paragraph1?
A.To classify a concept of the passage.
B.To introduce the topic of the passage.
C.To make an overall outline for the passage.
D.To offer a general background of the passage.
33.Which statement would Adrian Ward most probably agree with?
A.Smartphones enable constant connection to latest information.
B.Mobile device use does not affect performance on mental system.
C.Cognitive capabilities are largely determined by working memory.
D.The presence of smartphones accounts for the damage to cognition.
34.What do we know about the participants in the experiment?
A.They were only required to perform mathematical tasks.
B.The outcome was better if phones were used less frequently.
C.They consciously thought about phones when memorizing words.
D.The distance from phones to people was related to their performance.
35.What’s the best title of the text?
A.How does Your Phone Damage Your Memory?
B.How does Your Phone Wear Your Brain out?
C.Is Your Phone Actually Draining Your Brain?
D.Is Your Phone Influencing Your Working Performance?第二节(共5小题:每小题2. 5分, 满分12. 5分)

(2023·贵州遵义·统考三模)As human beings, we’re all guilty of getting things wrong
occasionally, whether we are at work or in our personal lives. 36
●Step away from being perfect
When you’re not sure of your own self-worth, you wonder how other people are going to see
you. If you don’t feel good about yourself, you might feel like there’s less room for error. The
smallest mistake can feel like a disastrous error. Nobody’s perfect. You may make mistakes,
especially when you’re starting out. 37
●Turn to social support
Your mistake might feel like a huge event in your life, but chances are others won’t see it as
such a big deal. Reaching out to friends or family can help you see the bigger picture and feel
more confident. 38 . When you have that softness, and you have relationships that give you
confidence, you might be able to take some of life’s challenges with a lighter eye.
● 39
Accepting unavoidable mistakes might help to soften your blow. What you can do after
making a mistake is accept that you’ve messed up and promise to be better tomorrow. 40 .
Instead of beating yourself up, take a moment to reflect on what you’ve learned from your mistake
and how you could handle things for the better in future.
Forgiving yourself after making a mistake isn’t always an easy thing, and beating yourself up
doesn’t benefit anyone—So it’s better for you to make changes and move on.
A.Promise to do better.
B.Forgive others’ mistakes.
C.Some people are perfectionists.
D.That’s the way to forgive yourself.
E.Don’t expect perfection in everything you do.
F.However, the value of social support is often overlooked.
G.Here’s how we can forgive ourselves when facing our mistakes.

I was backpacking and planned to climb a volcano called Volcan Baru. At 3,474m, it is the
highest peak in the country and one of the only places on Earth from where you can see the
Atlantic and the Pacific Oceans at the same time. It is an active volcano, but last erupted around
1550.
I set off before sunrise. It was a little cold, so I had pulled on tights under my trousers. I
intended to reach the top by midday, and then return before dark to get a lift to my hotel.I’ve
always felt safe travelling as a woman on my own, which I’ve done since my 20s. I love thefreedom. When I got to the base of the volcano at 7 in the morning, the ranger disagreed to let me
go alone, but said OK because an American couple were behind me.
The first part of the climb was beautiful. It was not dry as you might imagine a volcano might
be — there were trees and flowers all around, and a dirt road for the farmers who worked around
there.I walked for an hour and reached a fair height. The views were impressive, so I stopped to
take a photograph.
Suddenly I heard violent barking behind me. I turned and saw two dogs running aggressively
(挑衅) towards me. I expected them to stop, but they didn’t. As they got closer, I could see their
teeth looked sharp, and that they looked angry. There was nowhere for me to run. I tried to keep
calm, but my heart was racing. I’d never been bitten by a dog, and I couldn’t help but fear what
would happen. They stopped a dozen feet from where I stood and kept barking. I knew they could
move fast, so I didn’t want to try to outrun them.
