Will he come? W: He’s in the service now, stationed in Germany, so he won’t be here. But Uncle Larry just got out

late all month. Let’s go out to dinner tonight. W: That would be wonderful. M: I’ve heard of a new Indian restaurant
downtown. How does that sound? W: You know I love Indian food! M: Well, this place should be very good. The
food is more like traditional cooking—like what Indian mothers would make at home. W: Sounds good! I had a
friend in college who was from India. Sometimes I would go over to her house on the weekend. Her grandmother
would cook for us. It was probably the tastiest food I’ve ever had! M: All right, then let’s go. The place closes at
8:30, so we’d better leave now. It’ll take about half an hour to get there, because we’ll have to find a parking place,
too. W: I wonder why the restaurant closes so early. It’s a Friday night. Restaurants are usually open late on
weekends. M: I’ll bet the cook is an Indian mother who needs to get home to her children!

world. People found it very useful thousands of years ago,and we still find it useful today. Secondly, the umbrella
is a great invention because it’s got several different uses. We can use it in the rain, we can use it in the sun and wecan use it as a walking stick. Thirdly, vote for the umbrella because umbrellas bring color to our gray, rainy streets.
My final reason is that umbrellas are very cheap to make and cheap to buy. So, that’s the wonderful umbrella.
When it rains, the rich and the poor can all stay dry. It’s an invention for everyone. If you think this is the greatest
everyday invention, vote now by sending a text message with your opinion to…

Turning soil, pulling weeds, and harvesting cabbage sound like tough work for middle and high school kids.
And at first it is, says Abby Jaramillo, who with another teacher started Urban Sprouts, a school garden program at
four low-income schools. The program aims to help students develop science skills, environmental awareness, and
healthy lifestyles.
Jaramillo’s students live in neighborhoods where fresh food and green space are not easy to find and fast food
restaurants outnumber grocery stores. “The kids literally come to school with bags of snacks and large bottles of
soft drinks,” she says. “They come to us thinking vegetables are awful, dirt is awful, insects are awful.” Though
some are initially scared of the insects and turned off by the dirt, most are eager to try something new.
Urban Sprouts’ classes, at two middle schools and two high schools, include hands-on experiments such as
soil testing, flower-and-seed dissection, tastings of fresh or dried produce, and work in the garden. Several times a
year, students cook the vegetables they grow, and they occasionally make salads for their entire schools.Program evaluations show that kids eat more vegetables as a result of the classes. “We have students who say
they went home and talked to their parents and now they’re eating differently,” Jaramillo says.
She adds that the program’s benefits go beyond nutrition. Some students get so interested in gardening that
they bring home seeds to start their own vegetable gardens. Besides, working in the garden seems to have a calming
effect on Jaramillo’s special education students, many of whom have emotional control issues. “They get outside,”
she says, “and they feel successful.”
24. What do we know about Abby Jaramillo?
A. She used to be a health worker. B. She grew up in a low-income family.
C. She owns a fast food restaurant. D. She is an initiator of Urban Sprouts.
25. What was a problem facing Jaramillo at the start of the program?
A. The kids’ parents distrusted her. B. Students had little time for her classes.
C. Some kids disliked garden work. D. There was no space for school gardens.
26. Which of the following best describes the impact of the program?
A. Far-reaching. B. Predictable.
C. Short-lived. D. Unidentifiable.
27. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Rescuing School Gardens B. Experiencing Country Life
C. Growing Vegetable Lovers D. Changing Local Landscape
D 25. C 26. A 27. B
And at first it is, says Abby Jaramillo, who with another teacher started Urban
Sprouts, a school garden program at four low-income schools.(起初是这样的,艾比·哈拉米洛说,她和另一位
“They come to us thinking vegetables are awful, dirt is awful, insects
are awful.” Though some are initially scared of the insects and turned off by the dirt, most are eager to try
something new.(她说。“他们来找我们,认为蔬菜很可怕,泥土很可怕,昆虫也很可怕。”虽然有些人一
开始害怕昆虫,对泥土感到厌烦,但大多数人都渴望尝试新的东西。)”可知,项目之初,一些学生不喜欢
园艺工作。故选C。
26. 推理判断题。根据最后一段“She adds that the program’s benefits go beyond nutrition. Some students get sointerested in gardening that they bring home seeds to start their own vegetable gardens. Besides, working in the
garden seems to have a calming effect on Jaramillo’s special education students, many of whom have emotional
control issues. “They get outside,” she says, “and they feel successful.”(她补充说,该计划的好处不仅仅是营养。
故选A。
And at first it is, says Abby Jaramillo, who with another teacher started Urban
Sprouts, a school garden program at four low-income schools. The program aims to help students develop science
C
Being taken off the endangered species list doesn't guarantee a carefree future for whales. Recent research
estimates that the population of Pacific gray whales off North America's West Coast has dwindled by almost a
quarter since 2016. Starting in 2019, alarming numbers of dead gray whales were spotted on beaches and floating
offshore throughout their habitat, from Mexico to Alaska. The National Marine Fisheries Service defined it as an
“Unusual Mortality Event”. UMEs are declared when a “significant die-off” occurs and when information is
collected to clarify why it occurs.
The Arctic has historically low levels of sea ice in recent years, upending the delicate ecosystem that sustains
gray whales. Like other migrators, they don't feed on their winter breeding (繁殖) grounds or along their migration,
and must gain weight during the summer to sustain themselves through the rest of the year. Observers using air
photography noted the whales looked skinnier and arrived in Mexico in poor condition, which suggested they were
not finding enough food during the summer.
This die-off is alarmingly similar to the events of 20 years ago, when another UME resulted in a significant
drop in the gray whale population. Although the cause was ultimately undetermined, it's thought that the population
reached “carrying capacity”—it grew too large for the environment to support it. Although that idea has been
suggested for this die-off as well, it's more likely blamed on the changing conditions of the Arctic.Gray whales, hunted almost to extinction by the mid-20th century, were one of the first to be protected from
hunting. The Eastern North Pacific population rebounded without pressure from whaling and was taken off the
Endangered Species List; the Western North Pacific population is still listed as endangered. This die-off is a
reminder that “delisting” doesn't indicate a population's secure future. New threats arise, climate change upends
habitats, and continued monitoring is needed in case a crash comes.
28. What does the underlined word “dwindled” in paragraph 1 mean?
A. Increased. B. Bounced.
C. Multiplied. D. Dropped.
29. What will gray whales usually do in winter?
A. Consume few calories. B. Travel south to breed.
C. March back to Alaska. D. Seek food in the Arctic.
30. What might be the main cause of the current UME?
A. Serious illnesses. B. Sea pollution.
C. Environmental changes. D. Limited carrying capacity.
31. What's the author's attitude to the “delisting”?
A. Concerned. B. Favorable. C. Intolerant. D. Regretful.
D 29. B 30. C 31. A
Starting in 2019, alarming numbers of dead gray whales were spotted on beaches
and floating offshore throughout their habitat, from Mexico to Alaska.(从2019年开始,从墨西哥到阿拉斯加,
根据第二段的“Like other migrators, they don't feed on their winter breeding (繁殖) grounds
or along their migration, and must gain weight during the summer to sustain themselves through the rest of the year.
Observers using air photography noted the whales looked skinnier and arrived in Mexico in poor
condition(使用空中摄影的观察人员注意到,这些鲸鱼看起来更瘦了,抵达墨西哥时身体状况很差)”可推断
Although that idea has been suggested for this die-off as well, it's more likely
blamed on the changing conditions of the Arctic.(虽然这种观点也被认为是导致这种灭绝的原因,但它更有可能被归咎于北极环境的变化。)”
This die-off is a reminder that “delisting” doesn't indicate a population's
secure future.(这次灭绝提醒人们,“除名”并不意味着一个种群的未来就安全了。)”
D
The average bear, it seems, is getting ever smarter. First, it turned out that at least one can use a comb. Now it
appears that some can count, too.
Jennifer Vonk, of Oakland University, in Michigan, and Michael Beran, from Georgia State University, set
three American black bears the task of distinguishing between numerically larger and smaller groups of dots(点)on
a computer screen. In return for a food reward one bear, Brutus, would touch the more heavily dotted pattern with
his nose. The others, Bella and Dusty, would touch the screen with their claws(爪子).
As the researchers report in Animal Behavior, the bears did best with patterns where the coloured dots did not
move and where more of them also took up a larger coloured area. This could be explained by the bears'
distinguishing the different areas of colour rather than truly counting the dots. However, the three bears managed to
pick out the bigger number of dots even in pairs of patterns where fewer dots took up a larger area.
Moving patterns, where each dot followed its own path around the screen, were more of a challenge. But
Brutus, at least, was not defeated. He seemed to be counting mobile dots even when the scientists tried to mislead
him by moving the total coloured area of the dots at the same time.
It is not entirely surprising that bears should have a high degree of intelligence. They face a lot of challenges
when trying to get food. They are, however, always alone, and so do not have the complex social systems that
contribute to animal smarts. Perhaps, then, their maths skill developed because they cannot count on their friends
for help.
32. What task did the scientists set for the three bears?
A. Distinguishing different dot patterns.
B. Figuring out different colours of dots.
C. Putting the dots into differently coloured groups.
D. Picking out the group with a larger number of dots.
33. For the bears, the task was easier when__________.
A. the coloured dots were moving slowly
B. the dot patterns were regular in shape
C. the dots followed a path on the screenD. more dots covered a larger coloured area
34. What may explain the bears' high degree of intelligence?
A. They learn skills from other animals.
B. They face life challenges on their own.
C. They feed on a diverse range of food.
D. They have complex social networks.
35. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Bears Taught to Distinguish Colours
B. Three Bears Learned How to Count
C. New Evidence of Bear Intelligence Found
D. The Smartest American Black Bear Brutus
A 33. D 34. B 35. C
Jennifer Vonk, of Oakland University, in Michigan, and Michael Beran, from
Georgia State University, set three American black bears the task of distinguishing between numerically larger and
smaller groups of dots on a computer screen.(密歇根州奥克兰大学的Jennifer Vonk和乔治亚州立大学的
Michael Beran
故选A项。
As the researchers report in Animal Behavior the bears did best with patterns
where the coloured dots did not move and where more of them also took up a larger coloured area.(正如研究人员
It is not entirely surprising that bears should have a high degree of intelligence.
They face a lot of challenges when trying to get food.(熊拥有高度的智力并不完全令人惊讶。
Everybody wants success. Some people aim for it; others just talk about it. We all know what it looks like
when someone else has it. Often it just seems like something too far out of reach. The truth to success is closer thanyou think. ____36___ Only you have to want it enough, and be willing enough to get it.
Fear is your biggest obstacle—fear of failure, fear of the judgment of others, fear of actually succeeding. It will trip
you up every time. It will cause you to make decisions that may seem “right” at the time, but they’re preventing
you from actually getting over that wall.
____37___ The minute you find a reason not to take another step towards success is the moment you stop
being successful. In the symphony of success, excuses are just noise.
Go to the other side of obstacles. Everyone faces changes, different ones at different times. We all handle the
same challenges differently; we all have different results. It’s how you handle each one and what you do with the
results that count. An obstacle is something you either find a way around or allow it to stop you. ____38___
Go to the other side of failures. Not everything works; even if it works for other people, the same thing just
doesn’t work for us. So what? Failure can either become an obstacle and an excuse or it can become your teacher in
what not to do.
It takes effort, commitment, and follow-through. They call it a ladder ( 梯 子 ) of
success for a reason …because you need to climb it in order to get somewhere. It’s not an escalator
____39____ You have to do the work yourself. Sometimes it will be easy; other times you’ll be carrying a heavy
load on your shoulders. The ladder remains the same. ____40___ It's going to take determination and persistence
on your part to get up and over that wall.
So, which side do you want to be on?
A. All you need to do is to wait for it to come true.
B. It's just on the other side.
C. Remember, you’ve got to get passed obstacles in order to succeed.
D. Success has no excuses—you either get it or you don’t.
E. The key is to find a way to prevent it from happening.
F. You just don’t stand there and let it do the work for you.
G. Success still waits on the other side.
The truth to success is closer than you think.
In the symphony of success, excuses are just noise.
An obstacle is something you either find a way around or allow it to stop you.

New Era, New Students
Admittedly, we generations are in a new era when the world is undergoing major changes unseen in a century. With
great changes come new challenges and responsibilities. To better coping with these, we yet need to sweep away all
the uncivilized phenomena in our school first.
Unaware of its value, some students take it for granted to waste food. Besides, in the library, certain students speak
or talk aloud, disturbing and annoying others. Little as the matters seem to be, we cannot afford to overlook the
serious consequences they will bring. So I suggest that the school post more noticeable slogans and make relevant

As students in the new era, I sincerely hope that we can become a better us to make contributions to the society.

After a very meaningful conversation with my dad about the old days, we came up with an object that we both
remembered clearly. It was my very first bicycle. My mind told me I got it when I was seven, who was cheated to
ride it for fifty yards alone the first time I tried!
My dad put together all the small pieces of the bicycle from a beautiful material that he called, “Your own
car.” Of course I knew he had some magical ability, but I didn’t think he could make such an awesome object. He
added the seat and the pedals (踏板) so that I would not have any problems. My dad recalled the bicycle was the
smallest he could find while I remember how huge it was. I was so afraid of it and there was no way that I was
going to control that monster-sized material. The bicycle was left in my backyard as a decoration for a month
because I refused to ride it. Honestly, I was scared to try it.
After a month, my dad gave me a lecture to teach me what being a man was all about. I was finally determined
to try it. My dad was proud of me and I felt very manly. He and I went to the park to see what we could do there.
The park was empty when we arrived. I had no doubt that my dad told everybody not to be there because we
had to use it. I felt sorry for other people, but I was proud to have such an omnipotent (全能的) person as my dad.We found a smooth and open space. My dad was holding the back part of the seat to make sure I didn’t fell.
He promised me that I was not going to fall because he would be running right behind, holding the bicycle.

I turned around and found my dad was not behind. I was so scared I felt like I was going to fall at any moment.
Sure enough, after shaking my body several times, I fell to the ground. I was very angry with my father why let go
of my hand and let me ride alone. My father smiled and said to me: "It's OK, stick to it for a while." Then he started
to teach me how to keep my center of gravity in balance. I learned the skills my father taught me, and repeated the
practice several times.
I started to pedal and the bicycle moved. The bicycle moved when I pressed on the pedals. I rode for some distance
and I felt my body was in balance. I felt that I could ride independently slowly, while my father was cheering for
me. Finally I could ride a bike just like a free bird flying happily in the air.
