I stood in front of my entire lab and told them I had made zero progress in the last year. At the graduate
program's annual presentation, highlighting students' successes, Michelle and I were taking a different approach,
sharing our most painful failures. The audience sat in silence, apparently shocked. But we weren't ashamed. Quite
the opposite - we were proud to be sharing our full selves and building a foundation for relationships.
Setbacks are an unavoidable part of graduate school, but too often we try to hide them. By sharing our wholeselves, including our failures, we went on to build a deep, meaningful relationship. And we wanted others to
experience that openness and support.
We began the workshop by presenting our stories onstage. Then we invited the participants to turn to one
another and share their own significant failures. An awkward silence followed, as we had expected, but it only
lasted a few seconds. Soon the students jumped into engaged and enthusiastic conversation. Students even formed
larger groups as they realized how many of their colleagues shared the exact struggles they did. Even after the
session ended, whispered conversations continued until the next speaker took the stage.
From that point forward, every presentation included some mention of the failures that led to the results. It
reminded us that behind every impressive result is a person who is just trying his best. Since the workshop, we have
noticed a sustained change in our classmates. The answers to questions like “How are you doing?” are more sincere
and less perfunctory, and several students have mentioned they feel closer to their classmates.
It's hard to relate to someone when all you know about them is their accomplishments. Talking about failure
normalizes it and proves it's nothing to be ashamed of.
24.What do most graduate school students emphasize in their presentation?
A.Their complaints.
B.Their achievements.
C.Their failures.
D.Their experiments.
25.How does sharing failures benefit students?
A.It stops them from feeling ashamed.
B.It contributes to their school courses.
C.It helps them bond with their classmates.
D.It reduces their fear of presentation.
26.What does the underlined word “perfunctory” in Paragraph 4 refer to?
A.Rude.
B.Casual.
C.Detailed.
D.Direct.
27.What can we know about the participants?
A.They were active for most of the workshop.
B.They kept silent all through the workshop.C.They whispered softly during others' speech.
D.They felt shocked by others' failures.

Extremely energetic light from space is an unexplained wonder. Scientists don’t know where that light
comes from, exactly. And now astronomers have spotted this light, called gamma (伽马) rays, at higher
energies than ever before.
You can’t see gamma rays with your eyes. They are much more energetic than the light that we can see.
So you need a fancy detector to spot them. The Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory, LHAASO, is
an experiment in China. It searches for extremely high energy gamma rays.
Scientists have spotted 12 gamma-ray hot spots. These are parts of the sky from which the gamma rays
are sent out. Those hot spots show that our galaxy, the Milky Way, has powerful particle accelerators (加速
器). But those particle accelerators aren’t made by humans. Instead, they come from violent events in the
universe. They might be exploding stars, for example. Such violent events make electric and magnetic fields,
which can speed up protons (质子) and electrons. Those fast particles can then produce gamma rays with a
lot of energy. That can happen when protons interact with other matter in space, for example.
Scientists aren’t sure what could produce gamma rays with the extreme energies observed. But the new
observations point to two possibilities. One hot spot was associated with the Crab Nebula. That’s the remains
of an exploded star. Another possible source was the Cygnus Cocoon. That's a region where massive stars are
forming. The stars send out intense winds in the process.
LHAASO is located on Haizi Mountain in China’s Sichuan province. It is not yet fully operational. It's
due to be completed later this year. Then, it could find even more gamma rays.
28.What can we learn about gamma rays?
A.They are invisible.
B.They are often ignored.
C.They contain little energy.
D.They are used to explore universe.
29.Why are some examples used in paragraph 3?
A.To make the explanation lively.
B.To help understand the Milky Way.
C.To illustrate the universe is expanding.
D.To show how gamma rays might be produced.30.Which word can describe the astronomical observation mentioned in this text?
A.Disappointing. B.Exciting.
C.Accurate. D.Unconfirmed.
31.What is a suitable title of this text?
A.Gamma Rays Come from Multiple Sources
B.The Universe Is Exploding with Great Energy
C.Light from Space Has Recorded-Breaking Energy
D.Gamma Rays Can Only Be Seen by Astronauts

“It’s a big hammer to crack a nut.” This is how one angry parent described the recent crackdown (严厉的打
击) by London police on parents who drop their kids off at school by car. Yes, you read that correctly—the very
way of transportation that many American schools insist is the only safe way to deliver kids to school is now
considered illegal in the UK.
The decision to fine any vehicles seen dropping off or picking up kids within a particular zone of east London
comes from city councillors’ (议员) long-term efforts to make the area safer and less crowded. They say they’ve
been trying for years “to encourage reasonable parking”, but in vain. Neighborhood residents complain frequently
about their driveways being blocked by illegally parked cars for 15 minutes or more, often while they’re trying to
get to work, and the streets are long overcrowded.
Now the rules have changed. Some parents are angry. Angie is a mother who made the “big hammer”
comment and says the crackdown is “way over the top.” The nearest drop-off point for her six-year-old is now a
five-minute walk from the school. Others are happy with the decision, serious though it may seem. Councillor
Jason Frost said:
“Traffic has significantly reduced, and more children are now walking to school, which is a great result. I
would rather have complaints that we are slightly inconveniencing parents than hear that a child had been seriously
injured because nothing was done.”
I see daily the disorder created by these in-town drivers, when I walk my own kids to school. There’s a parking
lot crowded with vehicles and a slow-moving train of cars moving in circles, many filling the air with harmful
smoke. Meanwhile, the conversations around overweight children and the importance of daily physical activities
continue to stand out in schools.
32. What can be seen after the crackdown is carried out?
A. Favor from all people. B. Less daily disorder.C. More over-weight children. D. Complaints from neighbors.
33. Why is Angie Baillieul against the new rule?
A. She is often fined by London police.
B. She will lose her job as a school driver.
C. She has adapted to the American practice.
D. She thinks it adds inconvenience to her kid.
34. What concerned Jason Frost most?
A. Students’ safety. B. Students’ health.
C. People’s complaints. D. Parents’ inconvenience.
35. What’s the passage mainly about?
A. Parents attempt to resist a school rule
B. London police cause widespread anger
C. Different voices are heard on a new traffic policy
D. American schools care about kids’ safety

第二节(满分25分)
67.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
It was 1995, when people used fixed-line telephones instead of mobile phones for communication and people
asked ways instead of depending on navigation systems to get around. I was in China for the first time. I was to
meet a friend , Bruce, who had come to China a few months before to work in Jingzhou. I had never heard of the
place, so I guessed it must be small. Before I left for China, Bruce had told me his address over the phone. Now, I
was confident that I could find the place with the address written on a piece of paper in my pocket.
It was not until I arrived at the airport in Wuhan and went to get the bus for the “small town” that I realized the
address note I wrote in English was useless. At the information desk of the bus service outside the airport, I spent as
long as 5 minutes trying every possible American pronunciation of the word “Jingzhou” with him repeating every
single word with a confused inflection(音调变化). Finally, his eyes widened and it clicked. He turned to me and
said something I didn’t understand . I was not sure what he said, but he said it with confidence.
He ran outside gesturing for me to follow and put me on a bus. He did everyting for me. I handed him some
money and he took the proper amount and gave me the change. Then he told the bus driver where I was going.
When the bus took off, I assumed we were heading to Jingzhou... but how could I know?
I was informed via hand signals that I had now arrived at my desired city and now I just had to simply get to my
friend’s place. So I walked off to a stand of taxis and one driver greeted me ready to go. But when I handed him the
address, it was apparent that he didn’t know where it was. After some discussion with other taxi drivers, he turned
to put me in his taxi as if he had found a way out.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。Paragraph1: Soon he pulled up at a building on which I was overjoyed to see my familiar English word: Hotel.
Paragraph2: Bruce told me not to worry and asked me to wait for him to get a Chinese friend on the phone.
