Zhang Hao was a small and quiet boy when he entered middle school. He loved basketball, but he was
not tall enough or strong enough to play on the school team. His classmates often laughed at him when he
missed a shot. “Maybe basketball is just not for me,” he thought sadly.
Everything changed when a new PE teacher, Mr. Liu, came to the school. Mr. Liu noticed Zhang Hao
watching the basketball team practise every day after school. One day, he walked up to Zhang Hao and asked,
“Do you want to play?” Zhang Hao shook his head. “I am not good enough,” he said in a low voice.
“Being good at something does not come from talent alone,” Mr. Liu said with a warm smile. “It
comes from hard work and never giving up. If you are willing to practise, I am willing to help you.”
From that day on, Zhang Hao got up at 5:30 every morning to run and do exercises. After school, he
spent two hours practising dribbling, shooting, and passing with Mr. Liu’s help. At first, he still missed most
of his shots. But he did not stop. Week after week, month after month, he kept going.
Six months later, the school held a basketball match. When Zhang Hao walked onto the court, his
classmates were surprised to see how much he had changed. He was no longer the small, quiet boy they
remembered. During the match, he scored 15 points and helped his team win. Everyone cheered for him.
Today, Zhang Hao is the captain of the school basketball team. When asked about his secret, he always
says, “I was not born to be a great player. But I was born to be someone who never gives up. That is what
really matters.”

A.He did not like sports.
B.He wanted to play football.

D.He was not tall or strong enough.

A.About six months.

42.What can we learn from Zhang Hao’s story?
A.Tall people are always good at basketball.

Life has its ups and downs and people sometimes feel anxious ( 焦虑的). If the feelings of anxiety become too
strong, they can make you unwell. Usually, we might see a doctor or take some medicine to feel better. But it would be
helpful to have something to use at home that does not involve (涉及) medicine. So, we made a robotic cushion (抱枕) to
help manage anxiety.
Our team was made up of scientists from several fields. We built a few different robotic cushions, and each one
offered a different calming experience, like the feeling of breathing, a heartbeat, and one of them even had colourful
lights inside. We asked people to try them out and tell us which they liked the best. Most people liked the cushion that
felt like it was breathing. So, we decided to work more on that one.
For our final cushion, we made it bigger so it was easier to hug. We made a robotic part that could push air in and
out of a balloon inside the cushion, to control the “breathing”. We did this because slow breathing helps people feel
calmer.
Now, we wanted to see if our cushion really could help with anxiety, so we did a test. The test had to do three
things: make people feel anxious, check their anxiety levels, and compare the effect of the cushion to something else.
We made people feel anxious by having them do some difficult math problems in front of others. Afterwards, we
asked them to score their anxiety levels from one to ten. To see how well the cushion worked, we put people into three
groups. Group A used the breathing cushion, Group B tried meditating ( 冥想), and Group C just sat quietly without
anything to help with their anxiety. After 10 minutes, we asked them to score their anxiety levels again.
We found that people who hugged the breathing cushion had much less anxiety than those who just sat quietly.
And we saw that meditation also helped people reduce their anxiety.
Meditation can be difficult because it needs attention and practice, but hugging a cushion is easy! And, you could
hug the cushion while doing other things. By doing more research like this, we can find ways to help people who need
different ways to feel better. What do you think? Would you like to have a breathing cushion to hug when you’re
worried?
43.What is the final cushion like?
A.It uses air to make the sound of a heartbeat. B.It has a robotic part to make it “breathe”.
C.It comes in all shapes and sizes.
D.It has colourful lights inside.
44.What do we know about the test from Paragraphs 5 and 6?
A.People in different groups liked different kinds of cushions.
B.The researchers had people use the cushion during a meditation.
C.The result showed the cushion helped people solve math problems.
D.The test compared the effects of hugging the cushion and sitting quietly.
45.What is the writer’s main purpose in writing this passage?
A.To show how to use a robotic cushion.
B.To introduce a product that helps with anxiety.
C.To warn people about the dangers of being worried.
D.To compare ways of helping people feel less anxious.

VII、任务型阅读(10 分)
阅读短文,根据短文内容回答问题。
I grew up as a Chinese American girl in a small town. Although I lived in American culture from birth,
my parents raised me with Chinese traditions to help me understand where I came from.
Every winter, my parents took me back to China to meet our family and I would learn to cook
from my grandma. Once she taught me to make fun gor (粉粿). She added hot water to the wheat
starch (淀粉) and mixed the dough. When I tried to roll it out, my dough kept breaking. She laughed and showed me how
to roll out several at one time, her hands moving quickly like a machine. As we cooked, she told me fun gor wrappers
(皮) are an important part of Guangdong food culture. She also told me stories about other foods, like thousand-year-old
eggs. These stories opened a window for me into our history and traditions.
Back in the U.S., my parents usually cooked Chinese dishes for me too. I grew up eating Chinese food, so when I
started school, I wanted to bring homemade Chinese food for lunch. My mum was happy to help. To get the right
ingredients, she often went to the Chinese stores in the city center.
My classmates soon noticed my lunch. It looked nothing like their hamburgers, hot dogs or sandwiches. I shared
my food with them and explained where each dish came from and what made it special. Some of them grew interested in
Chinese food and culture, so I invited them over for dinner. My parents cooked for them, and our dining table became a
place of sharing and learning.
Last year, I started posting videos of Chinese dishes online because I wanted more people to know about our food
and culture. Sharing food helped me make friends and feel proud of who I am.
For me, food is more than just something we eat.
66.Who taught the writer to make fun gor?

67.Where did the writer’s mum often get the right ingredients for her Chinese lunch?

68.Why did the writer post videos of Chinese dishes online?

69.Do you agree that food is more than just something we eat? Why or why not?

【原文】    Hi, I’m Paul from No.1 Middle School. My best friend is David. We are in the same class.
We are very similar in hobbies, and we feel happy to do these things. Almost every weekend, we play
basketball together. We go to the same drum class, but he plays better, though. What’s more, both of us
like writing, so we often go to Sichuan Library and share our books to read. However, we are also
different. David is taller and I’m thinner. I’m more hard-working. He is friendlier and more outgoing
than me. That makes him more popular in our class. We make some resolutions for next term. I plan to
practice more to play the drums better. He is going to study English harder to get better grades. All in
all, we think friends are important to us. Friends can also bring out the best in each other, and they are
like sunshine to make our life more beautiful.
