A gentleman nearby handed his headphones to us, smiling, without saying a word. 1

They put the headphones on and settled into their seats for the long flight. I was touched by the kindness of the stranger who had given us his own headphones. It was a small gesture, but one that made a big impact on our family. 2                       (从那一刻起,我们一家人心中重新燃起了希望,也满怀着感激) for the journey we were embarking on. 3                       (我们感觉自己不再孤单) and that there were good people in the world who cared.

This incident definitely had a powerful effect on my children and encouraged them to spread kindness. 4

As we settled into our new life in Canada, my children began to actively look for opportunities to spread kindness. They would offer help to their classmates and neighbours, volunteer at community events, and 5                                 (将时间与物资捐赠给有需要的人). 6                                  (他们的举动不仅改变了他人的生活), but also brought them a sense of fulfillment.

Afer my parents’ strong persuasion, they finally climbed into my car, thanking us all the time. At first, the children appeared a litle embarrassed, twisting and rubbing their hands over and over again seemingly to get warm. Without hesitation, Mom offered blankets to them and engaged them in little childish conversations. The cold and bitter rain outside seemed to have become lighter.

When we got out of the car at our house, the three children ran through the firont door happily. Hardly had we stepped into our house when Mom found some of our clothes for them. 4                          (受这个举动的启发), Jill and I decided to share our New Year presents with the children. In a flash, 5

(一股感激之情涌上这对夫妇的心头), they hugged us tightly, saying tearfully, “This is the best New Year we have ever expienced." Outside the house, the wind died down and the rain stopped. As we drove them to the station, the air was filled with the sweetness of the New Year. Sometimes, 6                     (生活并非一帆风顺,但正是爱与善意让世界运转).

作者给出解决办法--承诺还钱--冈特同意--作者登上公共汽车--履行承诺还钱--两人成为朋友

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

I met Gunter on a cold, wet and unforgettable evening in September. I had planned to fly to Vienna and take a bus to Prague for a conference. Due to a big storm, my flight had been delayed by an hour and a half. I touched down in Vienna just 30 minutes before the departure of the last bus to Prague. The moment I got off the plane, I ran like crazy through the airport building and jumped into the first taxi on the rank without a second thought.

That was when I met Gunter. I told him where I was going, but he said he hadn't heard of the bus station. I thought my pronunciation was the problem, so I explained again more slowly, but he still looked confused. When I was about to give up, Gunter fished out his little phone and rang up a friend. After a heated discussion that lasted for what seemed like a century, Gunter put his phone down and started the car.

Finally, with just two minutes to spare we rolled into the bus station. Thankfully, there was a long queue (队列) still waiting to board the bus. Gunter parked the taxi behind the bus, turned around, and looked at me with a big smile on his face. "We made it," he said.

Just then I realised that I had zero cash in my wallet. I flashed him an apologetic smile as I pulled out my Portuguese bankcard. He tried it several times, but the card machine just did not play along. A feeling of helplessness washed over me as I saw the bus queue thinning out.

At this moment, Gunter pointed towards the waiting hall of the bus station. There, at the entrance, was a cash machine. I jumped out of the car, made a mad run for the machine, and popped my card in, only to read the message: "Out of order. Sorry."

I needed to do something in my community (社区) in order to complete the community service hours required to graduate from high school. Some of my friends had signed up to spend time at a soup kitchen, so I did, too. It seemed like a good thing to do.

I thought that we would just be passing out dinners to those in need, but I found out we would be doing everything from preparing to serving the dinner. We began preparing the food, from mixing salad dressing to separating frozen meat. Much still needed to be done before dinner was served, but already outside the building many homeless people were gathering. It wasn’t until a couple of hours later that we opened the doors and began serving dinner.

As the line of people came toward me, I got a little scared. I’d come face to face with the homeless: How should I act? How would they treat me? Would they hate me for having more than they did? While some of the people looked very friendly, some of them looked so dangerous. I didn’t have too much time to worry about it. I was assigned (分配) to serve the salad with the lady next to me. She smiled at me and said if I needed help, she’d be right there, which I found quite comforting.

I had never seen so many people wanting food. They were of all ages and nationalities. Most of them wore clothes that were torn and dirty. Some looked like they had tally given up on life, while others seemed to be making the best of the situation, smiling and joking. Some were better off than others, but they all needed a good meal and a warm place to eat. It saddened me to think of how many people there were who didn’t have a place to call home and the only food they got came from a soup kitchen.

The Meredith family lived in a small community. As the economy was in decline, some people in the town had lost their jobs. Many of their families were struggling to make ends meet. People were trying to help each other meet the challenges.

Mrs. Meredith was a most kind and thoughtful woman. She spent a great deal of time visiting the poor. She knew they had problems, and they needed all kinds of help. When she had time, she would bring food and medicine to them.

One morning she told her children about a family she had visited the day before. There was a man sick in bed, his wife, who took care of him and could not go out to work, and their little boy. The little boy -his name was Bernard-had interested her very much.

“I wish you could see him,” she said to her own children, John, Harry, and Clara. “He is such a help to his mother. He wants very much to earn some money, but I don't see what he can do.”

After their mother left the room, the children sat thinking about Bernard. “I wish we could help him to earn money,” said Clara. “His family is suffering so much.”

“So do I,” said Harry. “We really should do something to assist them.”

For some moments, John said nothing, but, suddenly, he sprang to his feet and cried, “I have a great idea! I have a solution that we can all help accomplish(完成).”

The other children also jumped up all attention. When John had an idea, it was sure to be a good one. “I tell you what we can do,” said John. “You know that big box of corn Uncle John sent us?

The moment Michael Armus set foot into the Bank of the West in Woodland, California, to deposit a check, he felt the tension. “Something’s not right.”

The cheerful greetings he usually received were absent. Tellers avoided eye contact, their faces pale. The bank manager sat rigidly at his desk, head lowered.

Armus looked to his left and noticed a man at another window with his striped T-shirt pulled up to partially hide his face. “This is a robbery,” thought Armus.

He heard the man say, “I don’t want to hurt anybody.” Minutes earlier, the man had passed a note to the teller demanding cash and saying he had a gun. Armus looked again and the man’s shirt had dropped a bit, exposing more of his face. Just at that moment, Armus recognized the would-be robber as someone he’d passed several times on a street corner reading aloud from his Bible and speaking to passersby.

Walking closer, Armus gently asked, “What’s wrong? Don’t you have a job?” The man froze, tears spilling down his cheeks. “There’s nothing in this town for me! I just want to go to prison!”

The raw despair reminded Armus of his own dark past — down and out, been to prison. His life was a mess. But he got another chance. Suddenly, instead of being frightened, Armus felt compassion for him, and a thought popped into his head: Maybe I can help.

Today I found out my grandmother’s cancer took a turn for the worse and she had no more than 6 months to live. Although she lives across the country, the bond between us has always been strong. Her diagnosis (诊断) in November made me extremely upset. But after she had surgery to remove the cancer, we were hopeful until today, when her scans came out, showing that the cancer had spread to her liver. The doctor said treatment was no longer an option.

I was at work when I got the news. It was my mother who called me, her voice trembling with every word. I tried to comfort her, but the weight of the terrible news was insufferable. Both of us were choking back tears. The moment the phone was hung up, I stumbled (跌跌撞撞) outside to my car, took the driver’s seat and finally broke down in tears, grief (悲伤) pouring out of me in waves. I didn’t care who might hear—I just needed to let it out.

Outside the window it was like a busy party where people kept coming and going. The entrance of the store was crowded, with customers rushing in and out as usual. Some regular customers from our store must have seen me in that awkward moment, but I was too lost in my sadness to notice anyone around.

After what seemed like hours, I had to pull myself together, wiping my tears and taking deep breaths before returning to work. I mechanically went about my business with a forced smile, helping customers and stocking shelves, my mind a thousand miles away. Shortly after, I was approached by one of my colleagues, saying there was something to my car. I had him take it off my car and bring it in to me. It was a bunch of beautiful and delicate flowers.

“David, you’re a natural on the field!” Coach Martinez shouted after another impressive practice. As the other players cheered and headed for the locker room, one teammate joked, “Better get his autograph now — future national star!” David laughed, but inside, the words stirred a familiar dream: representing his country on the soccer field, just like his heroes.

At 12, David had already learned the value of hard work. With his mother struggling to raise him and his twin sisters, he decided to buy his first pair of professional soccer sneakers on his own. For seven months, he woke early for a paper route and ran a lemonade stand during vacation. Finally, his piggy bank stuffed with enough savings for the neon-orange shoes he’d admired for weeks — shoes with “unbeatable grip (抓地力),” perfect for mastering those tricks on the field.

“Mom, save your money for Tracy and Katie’s birthday party,” David insisted when his mother offered to help. “I want these shoes to be mine every cent earned by me.” His mother smiled, proud but weary, and he determined to make her proud on the field too.

On the school bus ride home, David couldn’t contain his excitement. “Gabriel, tonight’s the night! I’m buying those sneakers after homework — want to come?” His classmate Gabriel, usually quiet, nodded with a faint smile. Suddenly, the bus jolted (颠簸) over a gap, and Gabriel’s shoe slid off — revealing a shabby, hole-dotted canvas with worn edges. David froze. The underside was practically coming off, the laces gone, and the fabric so worn it barely protected Gabriel’s feet.

Gabriel hurried to grab the shoe, cheeks flushing red. “They… they’re still good,” he mumbled, avoiding David’s gaze. But David saw the truth: these shoes weren’t just old — they were unwearable. He thought of his own dream shoes waiting at the store, with their shining color and top design, and then looked at Gabriel’s shoes again. The bus continued rolling, but David barely heard it over the rapid pounding of his heartbeat.

Ethan was a hard-working student with a heart full of dreams, but his family’s financial struggles cast a long shadow over his life. His clothes were worn out, and he often had to skip lunch to save money. However, Ethan was determined to change his fate through education.

At school, Ethan was a model student. He would stay up late at night, digging into his textbooks by the weak light of a lamp in his small room. His grades were remarkable, and he participated actively in class discussions, always eager to learn more. Unfortunately, his circumstances made it difficult for him to fully focus on his studies. He worried constantly about how his family would make ends meet.

Mrs Harper, his English teacher, noticed Ethan’s dilemma. She saw the determination in his eyes and the tiredness that came from his difficult home life. One day, after class, she pulled Ethan aside. “Ethan, I see how hard you’re working. Don’t worry, things will get better,” she said with a warm smile, patting (轻拍) him on the shoulder. Ethan was touched by her kindness but remained doubtful about his future.

As the end-of-year exams approached, Ethan worked even harder. He spent every spare moment in the library, studying until it closed. But then, a new problem arose. His family could not afford the fees for the after-class study materials that were essential for the exams. Ethan was disappointed. He felt like all his hard work was about to go to waste.

One morning, when Ethan arrived at his desk, he found an envelope. Inside were three twenty-dollar bills and a note that read, “For your study materials. Keep up the good work.” According to the handwriting, Ethan was sure it must be Mrs Harper who had left it for him.

With the money, Ethan bought the necessary books and study guides. He poured his heart and soul into his studies, and his efforts paid off. He was admitted into a famous university.

When I was sixteen, I was in a band. We came in third at our school’s talent show, so we decided to try for local events. We were excited when we got a chance to play at a charity event in a recovery hospital. For two weeks, we practiced hard to prepare a one-hour show.

On the day of the concert, we arrived early. Backstage, the hospital’s entertainment director told us, “Many people in the audience have serious disabilities or are elderly. They don’t often see live performances, so they’ll enjoy anything you do. Just play your usual show, and it’ll be fine.”

When it was time to perform, the auditorium (礼堂) was full. There were rows of wheelchairs in the front and back. Many people had severe injuries or birth defects, and some were missing limbs. A few were talking quietly, but most were just sitting and watching the stage. The silence felt strange, especially for us, as we were used to loud and energetic audiences.

We played our best show ever, but we couldn’t enjoy it. After each song, there was a pause. Normally, the audience would clap, but this time, there was nothing. Not even polite applause. It was really discouraging.

The silence made us even more determined to win them over. We played each song with more energy, trying to do our best. But after every song, the audience stayed completely still. After 45 minutes, we decided to stop early. Why keep playing if no one seemed to like it?

We packed up our instruments and went backstage. A moment later, the entertainment director came running in. “What are you doing?” she asked. “You were supposed to play for an hour!”

“Well, we think the audience don’t like us,” Tommy said, sounding upset and embarrassed.

The director looked surprised. “They love you! They just don’t know they’re supposed to clap. In fact, many of them can’t clap. They’ll be hurt if you don’t finish.”

I was sitting at work when I noticed a very untidy man standing in the lobby. He looked lost and possibly homeless, or maybe even drunk because he was unsteady on his feet. I asked if I could help him. Trying to hand some old papers in my direction, he asked if I could make him a copy of his military paperwork. I took the papers very carefully from him so as not to tear them anymore than they already were.

As I made the copies he told me that he was a soldier and had been half blinded in a war. I was shocked, but took a deep breath and simply replied, “Thank you for your service.”

He told me how he hated going out in public because he knew people thought he must be a homeless or drunk man. I felt terrible because I had indeed thought the very same thing. The veteran went on to say that he was college educated and had many hopes and dreams in the past.

Then I noticed he was holding a small brown paper bag. The bag was wrinkled and dirty so I offered him a plastic bag for his paperwork. He thanked me and then asked me to hold out my hand. As I held my hand open, he carefully opened up his bag as if it contained some rare treasure and then he placed two items in my palm.

My jaw dropped and my eyes filled with tears. This wonderful man had just placed his military medals into my hand.

I thanked him again for his service and for blessing me with the opportunity to hold history in the palm of my hand. He gathered his items and carefully placed them back in his bag and started to walk away. I saw him take a few dollars and some change from his pocket. He turned back and asked if there was a grocer nearby so he could get some food.

He explained he was diabetic (糖尿病患者) and he was getting shaky because his blood sugar was getting low. Being diabetic myself I couldn’t let him leave alone.

It was a sunny Sunday, and a group of high school students, including Alex, Lily, and Tom, volunteered to clean up the local park. They’d noticed the park’s steady decline over weeks — soda cans bobbing in the pond and plastic bags snagged on tree branches — and decided to take action. Armed with gloves, rubbish grabbers, and large bin bags, they met at the park entrance, ready to tackle the mess.

As they started their work, they quickly realized the task was more challenging than expected. The rubbish seemed endless: a broken kite string wrapped around a bench and even a discarded shoe near the playground. Lily sighed as she fished a crumpled juice box from the pond. “This is like a never-ending puzzle,” she joked, though her brow was furrowed. But they pressed on, Alex taking the north end by the picnic area, Tom tackling the trail loop, and Lily focusing on the pond and surrounding greenery, their laughter echoing as they turned it into a friendly competition.

However, as they cleaned, a group of younger kids — around seven or eight — burst onto the scene, chasing a soccer ball. They dropped wrappers and bottles without a second thought. Alex, wiping sweat from his forehead, approached them with a smile. “Hey guys, could you throw those in the bin? We’re trying to clean up the park.” One kid stuck out his tongue; another snickered, “Why? It’s not our job.” They ran off, leaving more rubbish in the park.

This made the volunteers pause, frustration simmering. We’re not here to be their servants, Tom whispered, kicking a pebble. Alex nodded, but added, “Yelling won’t help. They’re just kids — maybe they don’t get why it matters.” Lily bit her lip, watching the kids race around a tree. “What if we showed them instead of telling them?” she said, her eyes lighting up.

I came from a poor family. My parents didn’t earn much money. Every night, I saw them working late. They looked tired, but they always smiled and made our home full of love.

I was a high school freshman who loved beautiful things. There’s a school ball coming up, and I really wanted a nice dress. I often looked at the dresses which were shining in store windows. I touched the glass and wished I could have had a dress like that.

My parents started saving money for me after they saw how much I wanted a dress. They worked harder and chose cheaper things. One day, my mom gave me an old envelope with money inside. I recognized the envelope which contained a letter of admission from my high school a few months ago. My mother’s eyes were full of hope. “This is for your dress,” she said with joy. I held the envelope tightly and felt how much my parents cared about me. I promised to find a beautiful dress for the ball to make them proud of me.

I got on the bus to the shopping area. My heart was beating fast with excitement. The bus was crowded, and I stood near the back. Suddenly, I heard some noise. “You didn’t pay for your ticket,” the conductor said to a man. The man looked anxious. “I forgot my wallet. My daughter is in the hospital, and I was in a hurry,” he explained. I saw how worried he was and how his hands were shaking.

I really wanted that dress, but I couldn’t let the father get into trouble. I hesitated for a moment, took a deep breath and paid for the man’s ticket. Then, without thinking too much, I handed the envelope with the rest of the money to the man. “Your daughter needs you more than I need a dress,” I said softly. The man looked at me with tears in his eyes and said thanks over and over.

April has been a vet(兽医) for many years. Throughout her practice, there have been many unusual cases. Some were quite sad and some were even funny. But most of all she remembered one time on a rainy day a little girl came to her with her little guinea pig(豚鼠).

She was in tears and asked April to save her beloved pet. “This is my only friend. I really love my Dorothy,” the girl said. April examined the animal and realized that it was very ill. The pig looked young. Probably, it was already sick when it was sold to the girl. The vet saw many children’s tears, and each time she felt awful. But she always found strength to say that she couldn’t save the pet.

However, this time she looked at the girl and couldn’t say anything. April saw how simply the girl was dressed and thought that her family didn’t make a lot of money. Therefore, the pig wasn't just a pet for her, but a real treasure. “Tell me your phone number, so I can call you after the operation,” April said. “I’ll give you my grandmother’s phone number, because I live with her. My parents were gone. Grandma said that they had gone somewhere far and for a long time. By the way, they gave me the pig before leaving,” the girl said. April wrote down the number, and when the girl left the clinic, she burst into tears. She realized her parents had died and the girl didn't know the truth yet. How could she tell her that her guinea pig was going to die? April looked at the animal helplessly and wondered what she could do. Suddenly she came up with an idea. But before doing it she put the guinea pig to sleep, and went to the nearest pet store during lunchtime. She wanted to buy exactly the same guinea pig and give it to the girl.
