I switched to a flip phone (翻盖手机). It vastly improved my life. I felt empty and frustrated at how much
time I spent on my smartphone. So I spent the last five years steadily stripping my phone down to the basics. Social
media was the first to go, then email, then news apps, and then even internet browsers.
I long considered switching to a flip phone, but I always found an excuse to stay. Ultimately it was two of my
students, 15- and 18-year-old sisters, who pushed me over the edge. Word spread around school that they had
bought flip phones. If they were brave enough to take the plunge, I could, too. I spent $9 on a flip phone, plus $120
for a year of unlimited talk and text on a new number. For the last five months, I haven’t carried a smartphone with
me, just my flip phone.
This is the charming, romantic side of owning a flip phone: more conversations, more eye contact, more
connection. The separation between work and life is much more noticeable. I don’t overthink work emails all day,
since I no longer carry my work email in my pocket. I am living more like my creative, curious, phone-free
children.
This all sounds wonderful because it is wonderful. And now it’s confession time: I still have my smartphone.
As it turns out, our addiction to smartphones is not just on an individual level. Intentionally or not, we have built
structures that depend upon smartphone access, making it an essential feature of modern life. While most of the flip
phone inconveniences are charming, some of them are so frustrating that they make you want to pull your hair out.
Despite that, I will continue to use a flip phone as my primary phone so I don’t have to carry a smartphone
with me. And I will continue to evangelize for it. I hope many others get flip phones. We will all be better for it. If
nothing else, it’ll be nice to have more people to talk to in the grocery line.

“Are we alone in the universe? That’s the key question we’re trying to answer here,” Meenakshi Wadhwa, a
planetary scientist, tells her class. As she explains, one student takes notes while another holds up an iPhone to take
a photo of the slides. In many ways this lecture hall at Arizona State University is like any other. A group of
enthusiastic women sit attentively in the front row; the men are spread out in the back. But the hearing aids suggest
how unusual this class is.
Mirabella, a 20- storey “university retirement community” on ASU’s campus, is home to over 300 retired
people. When it was opened in 2020, the senior-living facility was nearly fully subscribed. Most residents are
having a ball. They can attend the same classes and cultural events as students, but with the distinct benefit of not
having to take exams. In their dorms, facilities include an art studio, a pool and gym, and a games room. Only the
second floor feels institutional, with a memory- care centre and rooms for residents who need round- the- clock
attention.
This is part of a wider trend. An estimated 85 colleges in America are now connected to senior living
communities. With more than 10,000 baby boomers (生育高峰期出生的人) in America turning 65 every day, the
opportunity for alternative forms of retirement is large. Compared with previous generations, boomers are wealthy,
educated and picky. They want to remain active and not locked away. These wishes can all be met on a university
campus.
For universities, welcoming pensioners ( 领退休金者) can make sense too. Nationally, undergraduate
enrolment dropped from over 18m in 2010 to below 16m in 2022. As for what to do with the extra space, the
smartest ones, Andrew Carle at Georgetown University says, provide a continuum of care — including for the very
last stage of life. “The charity is the icing on the cake,” he says of the potential that residents will include
universities in their wills.
8.How does the writer introduce the topic?
A.By raising a question.
B.By making a comparison.
C.By offering an explanation.
D.By giving a description.
9.Why are university retirement communities well- received?
A.They provide free medical car
B.They have various research facilities.
C.They allow students to take exams flexibly.
D.They help seniors live an active and engaging life.
10.How can universities benefit from integrating senior living communities?
A.It improves university teaching programs.
B.It addresses the university enrolment decline.
C.It draws public attention to university education.
D.It earns universities the fame for caring for seniors.
11.What is the text mainly about?
A.Different forms of retirement.
B.The education welfare of pensioners.
C.The trend of retiring on college campuses.
D.A new way for universities to make profits.

The spring dance is in two weeks, and my friend Lisa needs help choosing a dress. She shows me her phone,
filled with lots of pretty dresses, not one over $20. After some thought, she settles on an attractive gown with
elaborated details on the top. But two weeks after the dance, the dress ends up in the trash, worn just once.
Welcome to the world of fast fashion.
Fast fashion, popularized in the 1990s, offers trendy, cheaply-priced, poorly-made clothes on a weekly basis
to match the quick pace at which fashion trends move. With the fast development of modern technology, consumers
have gradually shifted from traditional fast fashion brands to new online-only retailers (零售商). These fast fashion
newcomers have thrived because of their unique business models. They exist entirely online, allowing them to ship
the thousands of new styles they release daily to consumers directly from their warehouses, avoiding import duties
in the process. Meanwhile, cheap overseas labor and synthetic (合成的) textiles keep prices irresistibly low.
These practices, however, are hurting the Earth more than ever before, because these retailers rely only on
international shipping to move their products, which increases the annual billion tons of greenhouse gases released
by shipping. Virtually all of these brands sell clothes made from oil-based synthetic fibers like polyester and nylon.
During their lifetime, these fibers are responsible for 35 percent of the micro-plastics polluting our oceans and can
subsequently take centuries to break down in landfills.
Though fast fashion represents an understandably desirable combination of style and savings, now, more than
ever, we simply can not quantify the true cost of our clothing with a price tag. When consumers want to update their
wardrobes, they can do so sustainably by reworking old garments clothing or researching environmentally
conscious brands.
For now, I’ll be at my next school dance rocking the same dress I wore last year.
12.Why is Lisa’s e-purchase experience mentioned?
A.To note the poor quality of pretty dresses.
B.To stress the negative impact of fast fashion.
C.To show the great convenience of online shopping. D.To display the extensive variety of clothing choices.
13.What is the distinctive characteristic of fast fashion?
A.Even-paced launches of new trends.
B.Cost-saving measures via local labor.
C.Full-scale reliance on online operation.
D.Limited-edition production at high prices.
14.What does paragraph 4 mainly talk about?
A.The lifespans of fast fashion business.
B.The fibers used in fast fashion industry.
C.The pollution from fast fashion shipments.
D.The harm caused by fast fashion practices.
15.What does the author suggest for consumers?
A.Explore updated items regularly.
B.Redesign existing clothes sustainably.
C.Refresh wardrobes with current styles.
D.Investigate brands through price labels.
第二节:七选五
Virtual internships (实习) are now a common occurrence as we adjust to the “new normal” when it comes to
working. 16 Still, there are many positives that can come from virtual internships that you should consider.
Use it for resume building
17 It showcases your ability to manage your time effectively and handle tasks on your own. Besides,
securing glowing recommendations from a remote employer highlights skills you gained through remote work.
Consider the cost savings
Having a job can cost quite a bit when you take the commute (通勤) into consideration. With remote work,
the costs are significantly lower, if they exist at all. 18 While being in person has a certain feel difficult to let
go of, working from home is arguably one of the best ways to store up some money.
Make the most of your time savings
Additionally, without that commute, you gain some extra time to get things done that you otherwise wouldn’t
have been able to. This includes many things, such as watching your favorite shows and cooking homemade meals
on a nightly basis. 19
Treat it as experience
Lastly, keep in mind that a virtual internship is still an internship. Experience is experience, no matter how
you obtain it. 20 For that reason, understand that a virtual internship is still experience, and that it’s still a
feasible option to include on your resume.
A.That being said, it can be easily viewed as a negative.
B.You get to work from comfort home, no commute required.
C.It is the way of the future, at least, for the foreseeable future.
D.Gas, parking fees, and even grabbing lunch can quickly add up.
E.It doesn’t seem like much, but the extra time can be a real game-changer.
F.While it’s easy to dismiss a virtual internship, you’d be missing an opportunity.
G.As for building a professional profile, remote work can really sell your experience.
