Gratitude (感激) is powerful. I know this isn’t the first time you’ve been encouraged to explore the word
with a promise that gratitude will enhance your life, but when we hear something often, it can seem antique. In a
world where we’ re constantly looking for what’s next, gratitude practices seem old-fashioned. But, we know
practicing gratitude can have benefits.
One of my favourite ways to show gratitude is to remember my life motto: Always try to help others as much
as you can. In my experience, this means you have to believe that everyone can achieve their dreams and that if you
help a colleague succeed, you succeed too. This means that success isn’t about stepping on others to get to the top;
it’s about working together as a community. It also means that we can be grateful for what we have, without feeling
jealous.
Recently, I’ve been inspired by a scholar, Sanai Graden, who went viral for listening to someone in need.
She ended up raising money to help the homeless man. “I just treat people how I want to be treated,” Graden says.
“I made my decision based on the fact that it would not only affect me, but also the people around me.”
That’s a key part of gratitude, and something Graden says she centers in her career. “I don’t want to be the
type of person who just gets by. I want to be the person who is making contributions and helping others through the
way. I’m not only going to win, but I’m taking people with me to win as well.”
Before I started regularly practising gratitude, I thought it meant being happy with what I have and not
complaining. This is mostly true. But now I think that being grateful also includes how we approach every part of
our lives, and how we use it to help us grow.
1.Which statement will the author probably agree with?
A.Gratitude practices are old-fashioned.
B.Opponents can prevent us from succeeding.
C.Supporting others is a way of expressing gratitude.
D.Success means helping others realize their dreams.
2.Why is Sanai Graden mentioned in the text?
A.To illustrate why people help the homeless.
B.To make a comparison with other people’s ideas.
C.To explain how to become a celebrity overnight.
D.To be used as an example of practicing gratitude.
3.What does Sanai Graden focus on in her career?
A.Staying alive.
B.Being a helper.
C.Being a leader.
D.Getting the win.
4.What might be the most suitable title for the text?
A.Getting to the Top to Get Success.
B.Gratitude: Being Content with Life.
C.The Power of Gratitude in Action.
D.Success: Affecting Others Around You.

Sanai Graden

Seventeen-year-old Abby Yoon is determined to help children lead healthier lives through proper nutrition
and physical activity. In America,14% of children do not get more than one meal a day, and many urban families
live in food deserts, where access to fresh food is limited. Yoon saw the need to address this issue and founded the
Sustainable Hunger Initiative, focusing on providing healthy food and educating communities about nutrition.
One of Yoon’s first projects was a community garden. This garden has produced over 3,000 pounds of fresh
fruits and vegetables, which have been donated to local family centers and soup kitchens. Yoon believes that
growing their own food fosters a closer connection to what they eat, while ensuring access to essential nutrients.
Additionally, her group has collaborated with local farmers and ranchers to donate more than 45,000 pounds of
locally raised beef to those in need. To complement the food donations, Yoon also offers cooking and nutrition
demonstrations, teaching people how to prepare healthy meals.
Yoon’s vision goes beyond providing food. She wants to empower communities to become self-sufficient.
“The community garden can serve as a medium for nutrition education,” Yoon says. Her initiative encourages
others to start their own gardens and learn about sustainable food practices.
Recognizing that a healthy lifestyle also includes physical exercise, Yoon has incorporated a fitness program
into her initiative. Many children in urban areas lack opportunities to play outside, so Yoon’s organization has
donated over 600 bicycles and manages fitness programs for more than 7,500 children.
Yoon’s efforts have inspired others to join her cause. So far, over 10,000 volunteers have contributed their
time to the community garden. What started as a dream for one teenager has blossomed into a movement that is
making a real difference in people’s lives, proving that one person truly can inspire change.
1.What motivated Yoon to start the Sustainable Hunger Initiative?
A.The support from local farmers and ranchers.
B.The desire to provide physical exercise for kids.
C.The shortage of fresh food in many urban areas.
D.The interest in teaching others to cook healthy meals.
2.What does Yoon think about growing food?
A.It teaches children to lead independent lives.
B.It helps people connect with the food they eat.
C.It allows communities to have fun while exercising.
D.It motivates people to donate more to soup kitchens.
3.What other support does Yoon’s initiative provide besides food?
A.Building new fitness centers in urban areas.
B.Providing financial assistance to local farmers.
C.Organizing school meal programs for children.
D.Offering cooking and nutrition demonstrations.
4.What can be inferred about the success of the Sustainable Hunger Initiative?
A.It has expanded around the world.
B.It has helped kids do better in school.
C.It has motivated more people to help the community.
D.It has offered jobs for over 10,000 people.
【答案】1.C 2.B 3.D 4.C

A grey-headed flying fox is back gliding through the night after life-saving surgery on a broken wing. The
female flying fox’s wing was badly injured when it was twisted in a net placed over fruit trees in Geelong, Victoria.
It was rescued and taken to Werribee Open Range Zoo’s veterinary hospital where it needed two operations to
repair the wing.
Paul Eden, doctor of the hospital, said, “The flying fox was in a very serious condition when it arrived.”
Flying foxes are highly dependent on their wings for many purposes. They can fly an astonishing 6,000 km in a
year to search for food and pollinate a wide range of plants. They also use their wings to help capture insects,
regulate body temperature and attract other flying foxes during mating season, So, it was extremely important that
we did everything we could to help this animal make a full recovery. Vets operated to remove some of the flying
fox’s damaged wing tissue and also gave it antibiotics (抗生素) and pain relief medication.
Following the successful procedure, the flying fox was transferred to a wildlife carer to prepare it for release
back into where it belonged. Dr Eden said, “It is very rewarding to see the flying fox recover fully and safely return
home.” According to researchers from Werribee Open Range Zoo, flying foxes played a critical role in Australia’s
ecosystem, not only for the survival of other native animals but also humans. Our ecosystem would be dramatically
different without flying foxes.
Dr Eden noted that there were some simple actions people could take to keep flying foxes safe, including
reducing the risk of twisting by using nets with a size no bigger than 5 mm×5 mm when fully stretched over
vegetable gardens or fruit trees. “If you encounter a flying fox that is sick or in distress, for the safety of everyone,
don’t attempt to rescue the animal yourself. Instead, contact Wildlife Victoria who will send a trained officer to
rescue the animal,” Dr Eden said.
1.How did the flying fox get injured in the wing?
A.It was stuck in the net.
B.It was hit by the fruits.
C.It was hunted while flying.
D.It was twisted in the branches.
2.What is paragraph 2 intended to do?
A.Analyse the reason.
B.Draw a conclusion.
C.Present a problem.
D.Add some backgrounds.
3.How will the flying fox be dealt with after recovery?
A.It will be raised in a reserve.
B.It will be adopted by D Eden.
C.It will be set free back to nature.
D.It will be tended in a wildlife carer.
4.What did Dr Eden advise us to do while coming across an injured flying fox?
A.Rescue it on the spot.
B.Seek professional aid.
C.Send it to Wildlife Victoria in person.
D.Drive it to hospital as soon as possible
【答案】1.A 2.D 3.C 4.B

A New Hampshire woman has raised nearly $400, 000 for an elderly disabled man named Donald, who has
been battling to keep up with bills while caring for his wife. The story began when Jenelle encountered Donald at a
pawn (典当) shop in Manchester, where he was unwillingly pawning jewelry to cover his bills.
Donald shared with Jenelle the hardships he was facing: His rent had increased, and he was finding it
increasingly difficult to make the pot boil while caring for his wife. He feared they might lose their home and that
his beloved wife could end up in a care facility due to their financial pressure. Deeply moved by his situation,
Jenelle immediately took action. She gathered $1, 300 from her own savings and contributions from friends and
family to help the 90-year-old. A video she shared of Donald receiving the money quickly went viral, recording the
moment he called Jenelle “a hero”.
The outpouring of support didn’t stop there. Jenelle set up a GoFundMe page for Donald, and the response
flooded in. Donations poured in from around the world, bringing the total to nearly $400, 000. In an update, Jenelle
shared the emotional moment she told Donald about the incredible generosity of strangers. “I told him it meant that
everyone in the world was seeing this and stepping forward to donate,” she said. “Even before I told him the
amount, he was already extremely emotional and couldn’t believe the kindness of strangers across the world.”
Despite the outpouring of support, Donald remained humble, insisting he didn’t deserve it and that he was
just an ordinary man. But as Jenelle explained to him, he’s much more than that to the countless people who have
been touched by his story. Jenelle plans to keep the fundraiser open until she and Donald can meet with an agent to
ensure the money is safely managed. This remarkable act of kindness shows how the generosity of strangers can
transform lives, offering hope and security to those who need it most.
1.What is Donald’s difficulty?
A.Pawning his jewelry.
B.Renting a house.
C.Making ends meet.

Reporters rushed to find Rehan Sujeewa Staton a handful of years ago when news broke that a sanitation
worker had been accepted to Harvard Law School, Their various versions of a self-made American success story
went viral.
Now, as Staton prepares to graduate, he wants to make one thing crystal clear: It wasn’t just him, but the
people around him that made it all possible in very direct and sometimes surprising ways. “I worked for a trash
company, where my co-workers told me that I should go to college instead. I had a boss who let me leave work and
go to school. I had a cousin who helped me study for the Law School Admission Test. My brother dropped out of
college to help with the family finance. My dad sacrificed a lot for me. I could keep going down this list. I got
lucky, but I made the most of my luck,” he said
From early on Staton understood the instability of life. He and his brother were raised by their dad. The

better life for him and his family was the main reason Staton applied to law school.
At Harvard Law School, Staton found a community of professors, classmates, administrators and staff who
helped him to get through. To show his gratitude to the service staff, he raised money to give $100 gift certificates
to each service worker of Harvard Law School and founded “The Reciprocity Effect” to honor other such workers
at universities and corporate institutions.
“I didn’t want to change after going to Law School,” he said. “The allure is huge. I went to work in fancy
places. I made cool connections and friendships. But I don’t want to forget who I am.”
1.What made Staton the focus of reporters’ attention?
A.His popularity on social media.
B.His job as a cleaner.
C.His admission to Harvard.
D.His donation to service workers.
2.What does Staton consider vital to his success?
A.Access to educational opportunities.
B.A bit of luck.
C.Academic environments.
D.Assistance from others.
3.Why did Staton refuse to change after attending Law School?
A.He was quite content with his present life.
B.He valued his personal connections over success.
C.He wanted to stay true to his roots and values.
D.He was not ready to let go of his past experiences.
4.What can we learn from the story?
A.A rising tide lifts all boats.
B.Two heads are better than one.

Today is the first day that my family is living without a car, after 16 years of owning and driving one. Our
blue Nissan Sunny has served us well over the past 10 years that it has been with us. However, we have decided
that we will not be renewing the certificate for our vehicle, nor to purchase either a new or second hand car.
This car is our third sedan (轿车). I have been driving since 1998 when I first obtained my driving license.
While we have encountered occasional incidents on the road, our driving journeys have been pretty pleasant. Let
me go through the reasons why I am going car free.
A car is a resource intensive way to travel. Beyond the manufacturing process, the usage of cars also
consume lots of energy. And that leaves a huge carbon footprint. So not driving a car helps us to save the Earth. But
the elephant in the room is definitely the financial cost of owning a car in Singapore. It costs around $ 365,000 to
own a brand new BMW 316i over a 10 year period in Singapore. Moreover, driving in Singapore is a stressful
experience. We don’t exactly have the best behaved drivers in the world.
Undoubtedly, not having a car does bring about inconveniences. Those with young kids and elderly folks
may find it less convenient to travel on public transport. Rainy days would also be a pain if you are going to an
unsheltered area. We will also have to cater more time to visit my parents on weekends, or send our son for his
swimming or tuition lessons.
Having said that, the truth is that we have already traveled most of the time by public transport on weekdays.
The only difference is that we will now extend this way of life to Saturdays and Sundays. It will take some getting
used to, but we are confident that it will still be worth it.
1.What do we know from the first two paragraphs?
A.The author tried to renew the driving license but failed.
B.The author intends to quit driving due to road accidents.
C.The author grows tired of driving the same car for years.
D.The author’s driving experience is enjoyable on the whole.
2.Why is the BMW 316i mentioned in Paragraph 3?
A.To promote a new model of the car brand.
B.To illustrate the huge cost of car ownership.
C.To demonstrate the full costs in making a car.
D.To stress the impressive performance of the car.
3.What is the author’s attitude towards going car free?
A.Doubtful.
B.Negative.
C.Positive.
D.Ambiguous.
4.What could be a suitable title for the text?
A.Say Goodbye to My Car
B.My Brand-new Way of Driving
C.Traveling by Public Transport
D.My Driving Experience in Singapore
【答案】1.D 2.B 3.C 4.A

While we have encountered occasional incidents on the road, our driving
journeys have been pretty pleasant.
But the elephant in the room is definitely the financial cost of owning a car in
Singapore. It costs around $ 365,000 to own a brand new BMW 316i over a 10 year period in Singapore.
Having said that, the truth is that we have already traveled most of the time
by public transport on weekdays. The only difference is that we will now extend this way of life to Saturdays and
Sundays. It will take some getting used to, but we are confident that it will still be worth it.
Today is the first day that my family is living without a car, after 16 years of
owning and driving one. Our blue Nissan Sunny has served us well over the past 10-years that it has been with us.
However, we have decided that we will not be renewing the certificate for our vehicle, nor to purchase either a new
or second hand car.

故选A。

At the end of 2015, Delhi’s air pollution was so alarming that the high court said it was like “living in a gas
chamber”. To tackle the problem, inspired by policies adopted in other countries and regions, Chief Minister Arvind
Kejriwal introduced driving restrictions on private vehicles beginning 1 January 2016: Cars with odd and even
number plates would be allowed to run on alternate days. But this created a problem of transportation, to which
Akshat Mittal found a solution, a website called odd-even. com.
It was a neat carpooling fix for thousands of city workers—odd-numbered car owners were matched with
even-numbered ones, based on timings, gender, profession and age. They could book a one-way ride or a return
journey, using their cars by turns. Quite simple really, but it took a 13-year-old to figure it out. The website got over
30,000 registrations during the first phase alone.
As an unusually focused teenager, Akshat doesn’t see himself as any different from other kids. His favorite
subjects are mathematics and physics and he loves playing badminton. But rare at his age, the 10th grader sees
himself as a “someone who identifies problems and tries to solve them by making products, using technology”.
Encouraged by his father, he has been doing basic web programming. “I always wanted to learn new languages”—
but it looks like computing is the language of his choice.
Now 15, Akshat has come a long way. He sold his website to the ride-sharing app. Orahi in April 2016.
Among the youngest entrepreneurs in the world, he is now working on a project called Change My India, a
platform for change-makers to connect and solve societal problems.
Akshat’s contributions have not been ignored——apart from extensive media coverage, he has been
recognized by The Global Education & Leadership Foundation and invited to speak at TEDx and VCCircle.
1.Why did Akshat Mittal set up odd-even. com website?
A.To discuss driving restrictions.
B.To raise awareness of air pollution.
C.To aid with Delhi’s vehicle registration issue.
D.To address a transportation problem for city workers.
2.What’s paragraph 2 mainly about?
A.Who are qualified for registration.
B.Why car owners are matched randomly.
C.How Akshat Mittal’s solution works.
D.What is supposed to be done to book a journey.
3.Which of the following best describes Akshat?
A.Emotional.
B.Creative.
C.Inflexible.
D.Humorous.
4.What do we know about Akshat’s entrepreneurial journey?
A.He has the courage to take risks.
B.He will be involved in multiple projects.
C.He’s widely honored for his work.
D.He intends to buy a ride-sharing app.
But this created a problem of transportation, to which Akshat Mittal found a
solution, a website called odd-even.com
It was a neat carpooling fix for thousands of city workers—odd-numbered
car owners were matched with even-numbered ones, based on timings, gender, profession and age. They could
book a one-way ride or a return journey, using their cars by turns
But rare at his age, the 10th grader sees himself as a “someone who
identifies problems and tries to solve them by making products, using technology”.(但在他这个年龄,这位十年

A few Thursdays ago was a wrap. For my brief acting career, that is. One of the benefits of having a writer’s
schedule in a city like Paris is the ability to say yes to the random opportunities that pop up. When an
announcement flashed across a WhatsApp group that a Hollywood comedy-thriller was looking for extras (群演), I
thought why not — and sent in a few headshots.
I had little idea of exactly what to expect. Being an extra often involves a lot of waiting and a movie set is a
phone-free space. In our case, when we weren’t actively involved in scenes, but still on set without our phones,
what else was there to do but… talk to each other? There was an intense awareness of many meetings of many
eyes. It was gloriously old school. A glimpse into what life must have been like before everyone’s head was leaning
forward and staring at the screen while people wait for whoever they’re waiting for.
Among the people I met were an art student from Quebec, an early career Parisian actor and a Franco-Dutch
programme coordinator. We chatted, we read, we played charades, we gossiped. In between takes, personalities
seemed to pop out of the surprisingly heavy hitting cast, as well as from fellow extras. During one scene, the
programme coordinator and I were wandering around in the background, having a conversation. As the scene was
shot, and reshot, and shot again, it couldn’t help but result in a quick friendship.
It struck me that around the time I graduated from college, technology seemed to stop bringing us together.
Instead, social media grabbed and then destroyed our attention spans. The process of bringing the world to life on
screen brought us to life in a way that we normally ignore. There’s an irony (讽刺) here — playing roles in a faked
representation of the world brought us, for a time, back to what is most real. And whether I make it into the final
cuts or not, for that alone, the early morning wake-ups and the sometimes endless waiting were far more than worth
it.
1.What do we know about the author?
A.He is into shooting headshots.
B.He played a major role in a movie.
C.He has a tight schedule as a writer.
D.He seized the chance to be an extra.
2.What did the author see while waiting on set?
A.An old-fashioned school.
B.In-person communication.
C.Intense competition.
D.Smartphone addicts.
3.What does the author think of the experience as an extra?
A.Time-consuming.
B.Stress-relieving.
C.Rewarding.D.Frustrating.
4.What is the passage mainly about?
A.Locked phones, unlocked connection.
B.Faked performances, genuine emotion.
C.The struggles and joys of being an extra.
D.A glimpse into Hollywood’s film-making.
【答案】1.D 2.B 3.C 4.A

Being an extra often involves a lot of waiting and a movie set is a phone-free

流。故选B。
And whether I make it into the final cuts or not, for that alone, the early
morning wake-ups and the sometimes endless waiting were far more than worth it.(无论我是否进入最终剪辑,仅

It was a Tuesday night. In my apartment, I was doing three things at once – packing for a trip, trying to get
dinner on the table and taking turns with my husband to calm a crying baby. Behind me, one work message after
another popped up on my computer screen. I ignored them all. During dinner, a text appeared on my phone:
“Where are u???” asked my colleague.
I didn’t reply to the text. This wasn’t the first time I’d ignored a digital summons (召唤). I didn’t mean to be
disrespectful, but I was also aware of what I wanted my silence to communicate: This is not a priority for me now.
For those who want to be polite, text-based digital communications can be extremely demanding. Ignoring a
text message or an email feels rude, but should it?
Cal Newport, the author of A World Without Email: Reimagining Work in an Age of Communication
Overload, has argued in his book that the etiquette ( 礼节) of digital communications is and should be different
from that of in-person or phone conversation, especially when it comes to the back and forth of hellos, goodbyes
and other pleasantries (打趣话). “In an in-person conversation it can feel rude not to finalize an exchange,” he
explained. “But in the context of digital communication, the sender often prefers avoiding the receipt of additional
messages when possible.”
Besides, in an era when we understand more and more the importance of rest and time away from screens, it
is essential to prioritize our peace of mind and relationships with the people in our lives: when we’re on vacation;
when it’s after 7 pm; when we’re at the dinner table.
It’s also worth asking yourself who pressures you for immediate replies. Perhaps it’s not the message sender,
but you. A recent study found that we tend to overestimate our colleagues’ expectations for non-urgent work emails
outside of work hours. So instead of criticizing yourself for not responding right away, consider slowing down and
giving yourself a break.
1.How does the author feel about ignoring the work message during family time?
A.Guilty.
B.Justified.
C.Indifferent.
D.Disrespectful.
2.How does Cal Newport view the etiquette of digital communication compared to that of in-person
conversation?
A.It should be the same.
B.It should be abandoned.
C.It should be more formal.
D.It should be less demanding.
3.What should we do according to the last paragraph?
A.Remember to put our family in the first place.
B.Find a good way to balance our work and life.
C.Realize the urgency and importance of our work.
D.Avoid pushing ourselves to respond to messages.
4.Which of the following questions can be answered in the text?
A.Is it always rude to ignore digital communications?
B.Does politeness matter a lot in digital communications?
C.Why should we depend less on digital communications?
D.How can we express ourselves in digital communications?
【答案】1.B 2.D 3.D 4.A

For those who want to be polite, text-based digital communications can be
extremely demanding. Ignoring a text message or an email feels rude, but should it?(对于那些想要礼貌的人来

故选A。

Until recently, most evenings, after my kid had finally fallen asleep, I would sink into the sofa, turn on
Netflix, and watch episode after episode until either my exhaustion or my husband would call time on this pitiful
sight. Turning the television off, I'd experience a surge of self-disgust at how dry my eyes felt, and disappointment
that the whole evening had disappeared. I would be momentarily but overwhelmingly surprised by my re-entry into
a world in which there were no socially-awkward-but-brilliant private detectives, but just a dishwasher that needed
loading and a child who would be waking all too soon. I felt crushed by this return to my life.
I started to think more about what was happening as I turned the TV on — why I would plan to watch just
one episode, but when I came to the end of it, I'd find myself unable to stop. It was as if I had no space in my mind
to make any other choice; I was swallowing up episodes without digesting them, without even chewing them over,
swallowing each one whole.
There is a way of consuming TV, and perhaps everything, that makes it very difficult to feel what the“right
amount” is, because it is more about getting away from something, rather than digesting something. Of course, we
all need a little escapism every now and then. But if we escape ourselves completely, and for too long, we can lose
touch with the ordinary, deeply meaningful moments of our day-to-day lives, such as cooking a nice meal for
dinner.
Between my child and my job and my odd detective TV shows, I have not been very good at cooking. Eating
has come to feel like something I do to survive, rather than something I enjoy. I've lost my appetite—not in the
sense of not being hungry, but in the sense of losing contact with a part of myself — my appetite for life. Recently,
I decided to have a night off from watching TV. I didn't turn it on and I was amazed by how much time I had. I
tidied the kitchen and felt satisfied by the ordinary, everyday experience of contributing something useful to family
life, rather than escaping it. I felt I wanted more evenings like that, and not so many lost in TV. But does it have to
be all or nothing? Or can I stay in contact with my appetite and find my way to an amount that feels right?
1.Why did the author feel disappointed when turning the TV off?
A.Because her eyes felt dry.
B.Because her child would wake soon.
C.Because the whole evening had been wasted.
D.Because her husband put an end to the night.
2.What may happen if we escape ourselves thoroughly?
A.Getting away from watching TV.
B.Missing daily highlights.
C.Avoiding a chance to survive.
D.Losing touch with detectives.
3.Which of the following can best describe the author?
A.Self-reflective and sensible.
B.Self-content and honest.
C.Thoughtful and modest.
D.Talented and passionate.
4.What can be the best title for the text?
A.What is a wasteful night?
B.How can you relax at night?
C.How can you regain your appetite for life?
D.What do you feel exhausted about?
【答案】1.C 2.B 3.A 4.C

my eyes felt, and disappointment that the whole evening had disappeared.(关掉电视后,我感到眼睛干涩,并因
But if we escape ourselves completely, and for too long, we can lose touch
with the ordinary, deeply meaningful moments of our day-to-day lives, such as cooking a nice meal for dinner.(但

故选A。

At the age of 25, David Puglia’s life drastically changed. It started when his health severely declined. After a
number of medical consultations, David finally got an answer: He had accumulated spinal fluid (积液) in his neck.
Medical professionals were able to provide a solution. Unfortunately, that solution involved a highly invasive 12-
hour surgical procedure, not to mention the fact that it seemed likely the fluid was caused by a brain tumor (肿瘤).
Thankfully, David did not have a brain tumor after all. The fluid around his neck was also successfully
drained. That said, David was met with a new issue: his fingers have no feeling. This made everyday tasks much
more strenuous, including buttoning up his own shirt, something he was required to do frequently for his job.
“During a work trip, he had to ask a stranger to help him in buttoning his shirt,” his brother, Michael, shares with
InspireMore. “He felt very awful.”
However, it inspired David to think outside of the box. If he was struggling like this, there was no way he
was alone. So, for the sake of his own independence, and that of others, he got to work creating an alternative. Best
of all, Michael helped turn his vision into a reality!
This resulted in the creation of the Magnetic Button. It has changed David’s life for the better, but he’s not
the only one who has benefited from their hard work. This product is available for others to order online, too! This
has been life-changing, and both David and Michael hope to see these magnetic buttons continue to help folks from
all around the world.
“To this day, David’ s fingers are numb ( 麻木的) and need the Magnetic Button every day for work,”
Michael shares. “I hope that we can increase awareness and distribution of our product, making it more accessible
to those who could benefit from it.”
1.What does the underlined word “strenuous” in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A.Difficult.
B.Meaningless.
C.Unavoidable.
D.Boring.
2.What drove David to create the Magnetic Button?
A.His brother’s encounter.
B.A familiar doctor’s advice.
C.His love for invention.
D.An embarrassing experience.
3.What will be the focus of David’s work in the future?
A.Improving the design of the Magnetic Button.
B.Finding a cure for his numb fingers.
C.Promoting the Magnetic Button.
D.Developing more products.
4.Which words can best describe David?
A.Humorous and helpful.

Like a lot of Canadians, Andrew Suboch grew up knowing little about Canada’s national game —
lacrosse(曲棍球), other than watching some neighbours pass a ball using old wooden sticks.
It was only when his two children started playing the game as part of their training for hockey (冰球) that he
took much notice. His son, Jack, went on to excel at lacrosse and he now plays for the Vancouver Warriors of the
National Lacrosse League.
Both children came up through the Mimico Minor Lacrosse organization, in the Toronto area, which has
been around since 1890. When the number of players in the kids’ league began falling in 2014, Mr. Suboch, who is
a personal injury lawyer in Toronto, volunteered to step in. He offered to sponsor the “Baby Peanut” program,
which introduced children ages 3 and 4 to the game.
Thanks to his sponsorship, more than 100 children play for free each spring for eight weeks. They spend an
hour every Saturday learning the game and every player is given a lightweight stick and a shirt. “They are taught to
catch, throw, pass and shoot in a non-contact environment,” he said. “You get them running around. Get them away
from the screen. It is our national game, so you get them exposed. And sure enough, they caught on.”
To fund the program, Mr. Suboch came up with a novel idea. He started searching his neighbourhood for
used appliances, metal and electronic items, such as computers and cellphones. He sorted the material and sold it to
a local recycling centre. “Word has gotten out, so people now will give me their used electronics and metal stuff,”
he said. The recycling effort raises around $20,000 annually, which covers the cost of the lacrosse program.
Mr. Suboch said watching the kids play has given him a lot of satisfaction and joy. Not only is far less junk
going to landfill sites, he said, but “we’ve also got kids who are not in front of a screen.”
1.Why did Andrew start sponsoring the “Baby Peanut” program?
A.His son asked him to support the game.
B.The kids’ league faced declining participation.
C.He wanted to promote his own law firm.
D.He hoped to popularize a hockey organization.
2.What does the underlined phrase “caught on” in paragraph 4 mean?
A.Learned the rules.
B.Got injured.
C.Attracted donations.
D.Became interested.
3.How did Andrew obtain funds for the lacrosse program?
A.By organizing charity matches.
B.By collecting and selling used items.
C.By charging participation fees.
D.By raising money from the community.
4.What can we learn about the program’s impact?
A.It reduced screen time for children.
B.It increased waste sent to landfills.
C.It made lacrosse popular worldwide.
D.It created jobs for the local residents.

Right now, I have three different water bottles sitting on my desk. My makeup table is so messy that it would
take me at least three minutes to locate my lipstick. Under my bed I have bags, purses and who knows what else
that I’ve forgotten about. Sound familiar? Be honest: How often does your social media scrolling lead to shopping?
And how many of those things that advertisements made you buy did you actually need?
Advertising, or marketing, often gets the blame for fueling wasteful consumption, and I can see why. It
involves employing persuasive techniques to encourage an addictive behavior that results in repeat buying.
Companies often advocate strategies such as limited-time discounts, promotions and coupons ( 优惠券). I’ve
definitely fallen for them many times. A membership card is another effective form of marketing that increases the
likelihood of returning customers. Since buying more will lead to the accumulation of loyalty points ( 积分),
customers will return regularly to purchase items. When their loyalty points are about to expire, customers will
return to buy more even if they do not need them.
But here’s the thing: It’s not just advertising. The rise of inexpensive products made on a large scale has made it
way too easy to live wastefully. These products are often affordable and non-durable so that they can be frequently
replenished (补充) at low cost. I mean, how many of us have bought a trendy $10 shirt, only to throw it after a few
wears? Similarly, fast furniture is generating massive waste as home owners turn to these cheap and stylish pieces
of furniture that often do not last long. The faster buyers replenish their products, the more waste is created.
As I sit here, surrounded by the mess and reflecting on my shopping habits, a realization has dawned on me.
It is ultimately the choice of individuals who must decide what they should buy and not be influenced by
advertising or submit to the temptation of cheap and trendy products. After all, there is just so much we can eat,
wear or use. Maybe it’s time to think twice before clicking “add to cart”.
1.How does the author introduce the topic?
A.By comparing different lifestyles.
B.By relating to her own experience.
C.By stressing her addiction to technology.
D.By questioning the function of household items.
2.Why is advertising blamed for wasteful consumption according to paragraph 2?
A.It forces people to buy large packages.
B.It exposes people to constant disturbance.
C.It tempts people to make repeat purchases.
D.It misguides people with false information.
3.What does the author intend to say in the last paragraph?
A.Trendy products need quality upgrades.
B.Advertising content requires strict regulations.
C.Social media platforms should set a limit to ads.
D.Shopping decisions should be based on real needs.
4.Which is a suitable title for the text?
A.Mass Production: From Trend to Trash
B.Advertising: The Mastermind that Misleads Us
C.What on Earth Drives Wasteful Consumption?
D.Does Social Media Contribute to Repeat Buying?
【答案】1.B 2.C 3.D 4.C

The Primary Engineer MacRobert Medal competition asks the UK students one question: “If you were an
engineer, what would you do?” And 12-year-old Rebecca Young had her answer right away. The young Scottish
student wanted to help members of her community facing homelessness.
Young entered the Primary Engineer MacRobert Medal competition as one of 70,000 engineering designs
and won the Commendation Medal, an award determined by public vote. She also won a silver medal in the main
competition. Young invented a solar-powered heated blanket with the goal of helping unhoused people keep warm.
Young started by researching sleeping bags and backpacks, curious as to how they could be designed to offer
even more warmth. Of course, heated blankets do exist, though they must be plugged (插入) into power supply to
function to their full potential — a luxury homeless individuals often do not have.
With assistance from an engineering firm, Young presented a prototype (模型) for the heated blanket. The
design is integrated into a backpack and powered by the sun, allowing for easy on-the-go use. While simplistic in
application, Young’s design is thorough.
Using the average human sleep time of eight hours as a required run time, she conducted in-depth research
on the most suitable batteries and solar panels to use in the prototype. The invention also includes a control circuit
that automatically alternates the blanket between on-and-off states based on temperature readings to conserve
battery life. The blanket itself is also designed similarly to a sleeping bag to allow for heat retention and to keep
users warm amid any shifts or movements. The outer frame of the blanket’s backpack also offers more storage
space to the user.
While created with the intention to support people sleeping on the streets, Young also said the design could
be applicable for camping, hiking, or traveling.
“It felt amazing to see my drawing turn into something real. I never thought that could happen.
Homelessness is a big problem that needs fixing, and if you see a homeless person, help in any way you can,”
Young said.
1.What motivated Young to enter the competition?
A.To win a medal.
B.To keep homeless people warm.
C.To improve her engineering skills.
D.To design a new type of sleeping bags.
2.Why did Young’s blanket need to be solar-powered?
A.To be more portable.
B.To be cheaper to use.
C.To be used without access to power supply.
D.To be environmentally friendly.
3.What enables the heated blanket to automatically keep battery life?
A.Its solar panel.
B.Its storage space.
C.Its unique shape.
D.Its control circuit.
4.What can we say about Young’s heated blanket?
A.Portable and practical.
B.Cheap but complicated.
C.Simple and Ineffective.
D.Eco-friendly but expensive.

In 1932, two young architectural historians, Lin Huiyin (1904-1955) and Liang Sicheng (1901-1972),
established a blueprint in their essays that would be a defining moment in the history of Chinese architecture.
In her essay, “On the Principal Characteristics of Chinese Architecture”, Lin claimed that the “structural
rationalism (理性主义)” of China’s wooden architecture was equal to both the classical Western system and the
modernist architecture then being built worldwide. “Since China’s wooden buildings share the same structural
principles as modern concrete-and-steel construction, one only needs to replace the building materials, without
changing the major structural parts,” she wrote.
In his essay, “Architecture of the Tang Dynasty”, Liang declared that kudos should be given to Tang
architecture, since “Chinese architecture reached its peak during the Tang dynasty (618-907), and then declined
during the Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1911) dynasties, finally being overshadowed by Western architecture
in the early 20th century.”
But at the time he was not certain whether any examples survived in China. He could only view photos of
the Dunhuang paintings (dating from the 8th to 10th centuries) in the Mogao Caves in north-east China, and take
reference from Höryü ji, a well-preserved Tang temple in Nara, Japan.
Both Liang and Lin believed that China’s civilization could only be repaired and rebuilt through “the
reexamination of its national heritage”. So eager were Lin and Liang to show China’s traditional architecture as a
singular system — equivalent to the Greek or Roman in the West — that they claimed that only one architectural
style could best represent China’s “national style”: the wooden structures exemplified by the Northern Chinese
royal palaces and Buddhist temples, especially ones built from the 7th to 13th centuries. However, in their essays,
they overlooked China’s diverse architectural culture: the multiple construction systems and building types of
different regions and minority groups.
A month after the publication of their essays, they conducted their first field study, followed by more than
ten years’ field research. Their greatest discovery was in July 1937, the identification of Foguang Temple, a wooden
structure dating back to 857, in the Wutai Mountains.
1.What did Lin Huiyin think of China’s wooden architecture?
A.It should serve as a blueprint for the world.
B.It could be upgraded to modern buildings easily.
C.It would replace the concrete-and-steel construction.
D.It was superior to ancient Roman or Greek architecture.
2.Which is closest in meaning to the underlined word “kudos” in paragraph 3?
A.Survey.
B.Respect.
C.Review
D.Disapproval.
3.What does the author imply in paragraph 5?
A.It was wrong to ignore other architectural styles in China.
B.He couldn’t appreciate the wooden structures in Northern China.
C.Cultural heritage was not so important to a civilization’s survival.
D.The couple should do some field research before writing their essays.
4.What can be learned about Foguang Temple from the text?
A.It is located in Nara, Japan.
B.It was discovered in July 1932.
C.It is a typical Tang architecture.
D.It is better preserved than Höryū ji.
【答案】1.B 2.B 3.A 4.C

3.推理判断题。根据第五段“However, in their essays, they overlooked China’s diverse architectural culture;
the multiple construction systems and building types of different regions and minority groups.(然而,在他们的文

After Brooke Gazer lost her job in 1996, she and her husband Rick decided to quit their life in Calgary,
Alberta, and open their own bed and breakfast. “Our criteria was that if we were going to change our lives, we’d
live someplace warm near a beach,” says Brooke. They ultimately agreed Mexico, the country where they’d first
considered taking this step, was the right fit for them, as well as the most financially viable ( 可行的) option.
However, their family and friends held a different attitude. “As a matter of fact, my best friend said, ‘Brooke, if
you’re having a midlife crisis, wouldn’t it be easier to do something simple, like changing your hair color?’” says
Brooke.
In February 1999, they left Calgary for Mexico. After exploring for six months, they decided on Huatulco, a
coastal town in Oaxaca. They purchased land for $75,000 in August 1999 and began building a six-guestroom hotel
overlooking Tejoncito Cove. They opened Agua Azul la Villa in January 2002, with the total cost of the build
coming to roughly $350,000.
“Running a hotel was a wonderful lifestyle,” says Brooke. “One of the things we enjoyed most was the
people we met along the way. With a hotel, people came to us.” It took them a little while to navigate some of the
cultural differences, particularly dealing with the laid-back (悠闲的) approach to time and scheduling appointments
