B
I did not come from a wealthy background. My mother, a single mother who raised 6 children, wanted me to
have a secure future, so she spent a lot of money to send me to the UK, where I learned to be a professional
secretary.
After graduation, I worked as a secretary. I couldn’t concentrate on paperwork and was later diagnosed with
ADHD, meaning a person may have difficulty staying on task, sustaining focus, and staying organized, and these
problems aren’t due to disobedience or lack of comprehension.
When I was fired from three offices, I lost all my self-respect. With nothing left to lose, I decided to open a
small restaurant. Kitchen is the only place to gain back my self-esteem. I was very lucky. Many famous chefs were
kind enough to share their cooking secrets with me. They saw something in me: a fearless middle-aged woman. My
cooking skills improved a lot and the my business started to pick up. I became kind of famous as CNN named
ChoyChoy Kitchen as one of the Best Private Kitchen in Hong Kong.
Then, I bought a small house in Aobadai, Meguro and began to run my own restaurant. The restaurant was
really small and could serve only 4 guests. I served only authentic Chinese Cuisine with high-end food ingredients.
However, the cost of high-end ingredients in Japan was high too and the profit was unexpectedly low. Despite that,
I still feel a profound joy whenever guests appreciate authentic Chinese Cuisine. Whenever I got a praise, I feel like
being chosen to spread real Chinese Cuisine in Japan.
Introducing the authentic Chinese Cuisine to Japanese is a challenging mission. Most of the Chinese Cuisine
in Japan is adapted to the local preferences and tastes and most Japanese have never experienced the true flavors of
China’s diverse dishes. Although mission sounds difficult, I will try my best.
24.Despite financial limitations, what motivated the author’s mother to invest heavily in her education?
A.A passion for pursuing a cooking career.
B.A commitment to providing for the family.
C.A motivation to overcome financial hardship.
D.A desire for a secure and stable prospect.
25.How did the author’s ADHD diagnosis affect her work as a secretary?
A.It enhanced her organizational skills.
B.It weakened her focus and productivity.
C.It improved her understanding of tasks.
D.It led to her being fired by her boss.
26.What can be inferred about the author’s challenge in introducing authentic Chinese cuisine to Japan?
A.Japanese diners are resistant to trying new flavors.
B.The high-quality ingredients in Japan is costly.
C.Many Japanese are unfamiliar with the true flavors of Chinese cuisine.
D.Competition from established local restaurants is fierce.
27.Which of the following best describes the author’s personality?
A.Lazy and unmotivated.
B.Determined and knowledgeable.
C.Resolved and adaptable.
D.Warm-hearted and optimistic.
【答案】24.D 25.B 26.C 27.C

Russell Cassevah has been obsessed with Legos since he was 4, when his mom let him pick out his first set
after a trip to the doctor’s office. As an adult, he took his love of Legos to another level: he broke Guinness world
records for walking barefoot more than half a mile up and down a path covered with sharp Lego bricks.
After his first world record, Cassevah decided he could use Legos for good: he quit his day job and began
traveling the country to deliver free Legos to children’s hospitals through the nonprofit he created, LittleBricks
Charity. Each year, he uses donations to buy and give away more than $120,000 worth of Lego sets to 29 children’s
hospitals nationwide.
Cassevah recently completed a road trip to the Arkansas Children’s Northwest Hospital in Springdale, where
he donated $9,000 worth of new Lego sets to young patients. One of them, Hewitt Kahana, was staying in the
hospital for his third chemotherapy (化疗) treatment when he spotted Cassevah sitting at a table covered with new
Lego sets. Hewitt has always been a Lego fan, and he had recently finished building a mini Egyptian pyramid at
home in between treatments for a brain tumor.
When Cassevah noticed Hewitt’s excitement, he handed him a Lego Galaxy Explorer set and asked if he
could help him to build it. Hewitt enthusiastically said yes. “Cassevah was really cool, and building Legos with him
made me feel happy,” Hewitt said. “You could tell that Cassevah really cared about the kids and was there to bring
smiles and encouragement. It was wonderful to watch him and Hewitt building and laughing,” added Hewitt’s
mom, Christen Sluyter.
“When I build with kids, my goal is to create fun memories and give them a voice and let them talk. Hewitt
knew so much about what he was going through. You could also tell that Legos were his escape and joy. More than
anything, we laughed and had fun. Hewitt knew a lot about the bricks and even taught me a few things. My time
with him reinforced my feeling that I’m on the right path,” Cassevah said.
24.What is the mission of Little Bricks Charity?
A.To raise money for children with cancer.
B.To gift legos to hospitalized children.
C.To encourage kids to walk on legos barefoot. D.To create world records related to legos.
25.What kind of person is Cassevah according to Christen Sluyter?
A.Persistent.
B.Caring.
C.Humorous.
D.Courageous.
26.What does the underlined word “reinforced” in the last paragraph probably mean?
A.Hid.
B.Hurt.
C.Strengthened.
D.Reduced.
27.What is the best title for the text?
A.Legos: Young Patients’ Escape
B.Sick Kids’ Joy in Children’ s Hospitals
C.A Lego Fan’s Great World Records
D.From Walking on Legos to Donating Them

根据文章第二段中的“he quit his day job and began traveling the country to deliver free Legos
to children’s hospitals through the nonprofit he created, LittleBricks Charity(他辞去了日常工作,并开始通过他
Little
根据文章第四段中Hewitt 的妈妈Christen Sluyter 所说的话“You could tell that Cassevah
really cared about the kids and was there to bring smiles and encouragement. It was wonderful to watch him and
Hewitt building and laughing,” added Hewitt’s mom, Christen Sluyter.(“你可以看出,Cassevah 非常关心这些孩
More than anything, we laughed and had fun. Hewitt
knew a lot about the bricks and even taught me a few things.
My time with him reinforced my
feeling that I’m on the right path(和他在一起的时光让我更加reinforced 自己走在了正确的道路上)”可知,
因此,D 选项“From Walking on Legos to Donating Them(从在乐高上行走到捐赠它

B
I was thirteen years old. My family had moved to Southern California from North Florida a year before.
Angry and stubborn, I could not adapt to this sudden change. Like so many teenagers, I struggled to escape from
anything that did not agree with my picture of the world. A “good without need of guidance” kid, I rejected any
kind of offering of love.
One night, after a particularly difficult day, I stormed into my room, shut the door and got into bed. As I lay
down in the privacy of my bed, my hands slipped under my pillow. There was an envelope. I pulled it out and on
the envelope, it read, “To read when you’re alone.” Since I was alone, no one would know whether I read it or not,
so I opened it. It said “Mike, I know life is hard right now, I know you are upset and I know we don’t do everything
right. I also know that I love you completely and nothing you do or say will ever change that. I am here for you and
I love you — that will never change. Love, Mom.” That was the first of several “To read when you’re alone”
letters.
Nowadays, I travel the world helping people. I was in Sarasota, Florida, teaching a seminar (研讨课) when,
at the end of the day, a woman came up to me and shared the difficulty she was having with her son. We walked out
to the beach, and I told her of my mom’s undying love and about the “To read when you’re alone” letters. Several
weeks later, I got a card that said she had written her first letter and left it for her son. That night as I went to bed, I
put my hands under my pillow and remembered the relief I felt every time I got a letter. In the midst of my teen
years, the letters were reminders of calm that I was loved in spite of my shortcomings. Today, when the seas of life
get stormy, I know that what under my pillow is assurance of love — consistent (始终如一的) and unconditional
love changes my life.
24.The author was angry and stubborn mainly because ________.
A.he didn’t like his new school
B.he didn’t get along well with his parents
C.he wanted to escape from his parents’ control
D.he struggled to fit in with his new environment
25.What do we know about the letter found under the pillow?
A.It was written by the author’s friend.
B.It showed mom’s love and understanding.
C.It focused on the author’s school life.
D.It advised the author to move back to Florida.
26.What inspired the lady in Sarasota to write a letter to her son?
A.Her own difficult experience.
B.Her son’s poor performance at school.
C.The author’s rich teaching experience.
D.The author’s sharing of his mother’s action.
27.Which can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Teenage Trouble: Growing Pains
B.Mom’s Love Letters: My Secret Comfort
C.Helping Others: A Journey of Kindness
D.Parental Guidance: My Inner Strength Source

It said ‘Mike, I know life is hard right now, I know you are upset and I know
we don’t do everything right. I also know that I love you completely and nothing you do or say will ever change
that. I am here for you and I love you — that will never change.
根据文章第三段“I was in Sarasota, Florida, teaching a seminar (研讨课) when, at the end of
the day, a woman came up to me and shared the difficulty she was having with her son. We walked out to the
beach, and I told her of my mom’s undying love and about the “To read when you’re alone” letters. Several weeks
later, I got a card that said she had written her first letter and left it for her son.(我当时在佛罗里达州的萨拉索塔

B。

For most people, having something important stolen feels like a disaster. Robbie Pruitt admitted when his
mountain bike was stolen last September, he got mad. But soon his emotions took a turn. After letting go of his
anger, he found himself on a road to sympathy (同情) instead.
As a biker, Pruitt’s first priority was to buy one again, but when he went bike shopping, he found the
pickings slim. The shortage in supply got him thinking: What if the person who’d taken his bike had done so
because he truly needed bikes to get to work?
With that thought in mind, Pruitt came up with a plan and posted it to a local Facebook group. He offered to
fix bikes free of charge for anyone who needed it. Pruitt also put out a call for bikes people don’t use, which he
would repair—again for free—and then donate to people who could truly use them but didn’t have the budget to
buy a bike.
The day the post went live, Pruitt was excited about a list of 30 used bicycles. And this was followed by
more than 500 posts from people who either had bikes to donate or that needed fixing soon after. By the end of the
month, Pruitt had repaired more than 140 bikes for donation.
Pruitt tries to give his donations to struggling families. Beyond simply satisfying a material need, he has
provided an opportunity for kids in his neighborhood to learn how to fix their own bikes.
In addition to practical skills, Pruitt’s lessons teach teamwork, encourage self-esteem, and develop feelings
of community. “Pruitt is certainly providing a service, but it’s not the bikes. It’s the relationships in the community.
It’s the impact he made on people. All the neighborhood kids are spending a lot more time doing something that’s
in their power,” Pruitt’s next-door neighbor Danny told The Washington Post.
24.How did Pruitt feel after he went to the bikeshop?
A.He was angry at the theft.
B.He became eager for a new bike.
C.He would rather find his old bike.
D.He tried to put himself in the thief’s shoes.
25.Why did Pruitt put out a call?
A.To find his lost bike.
B.To collect old bikes.
C.To raise some money for charity.
D.To advertise his bike repair shop.
26.Which of the following best describes Robbie Pruitt?
A.Caring and inspiring.
B.Considerate and loyal.
C.Outgoing and brave.
D.Responsible and humorous.
27.Which of the following can be the best title for the text?

bikes to get to work?(如果偷他自行车的人这么做是因为他真的需要自行车去上班呢?)”
Pruitt also put out a call for bikes people don’t use, which he would repair—
again for free—and then donate to people who could truly use them but didn’t have the budget to buy a bike.(Pruitt

From boat decks ( 甲板) to the Stanford campus, Katie Jewett, a 2011 graduate of the Human Biology
program, has charted a path through the worlds of ocean science and communication.
Jewett developed a love for the ocean at an early age. Upon graduation from Stanford, she involved herself
in the environment that had inspired her storytelling pursuits. After leaving the boat world, Jewett worked as a
science writer at the California Academy of Sciences where she wrote about the museum’s biodiversity research
and reported stories for bioGraphic magazine. Today, she is the Associate Director for Ocean Communications at
the Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability.
For Jewett, science is more than just the process of collecting data — it’s about the stories of the people

Oceans in a New Light. The feature tells the story of how ocean scientists are cooperating with resource managers
in Palau to develop a tiny chip that can detect floating DNA chips of specific species in the ocean. “What really
made the story successful was that the people involved in the project connected viewers to this sense of place and
invited them into the process of innovation,” she explained.
Jewett’s journey from HumBio student to her current role shows the value of using science communication
to sail in today’s complex world. “Life is a constant conversation, so having the skill set to read people and meet
them where they’re at is invaluable,” she reflected.
24.What does Jewett think is the most important in ocean science?
A.Protecting the ocean resources.
B.Developing innovative mindset.
C.Gathering scientific information.
D.Interpreting the data into stories.
25.Why does the author mention Oceans in a New Light in paragraph 4?
A.To show a way of science popularization.
B.To advertise the feature in a creative way.
C.To reveal the tough process of storytelling.
D.To indicate the advanced technology in Palau.
26.Which of the following words can best describe Jewett?
A.Visionary and humble.
B.Inspiring and enthusiastic.
C.Talented and courageous.
D.Considerate and optimistic.
27.Which might be the best title for the text?

I’ve loved to sew all my life. I started sewing (缝制) clothes for my dolls when I was seven years old. In my
late 20s, I began to buy used clothes at second-hand shops to upcycle and refashion. Since then I have changed
hundreds of pieces of second-hand clothing into stylish outfits for myself, my daughters and other family members.
But, about 10 years ago, when I was tearing the silk lining from a blue evening dress, I paused. There was a
hidden pocket that I failed to notice. I pulled out a small photo of a young woman wearing the very same blue
evening dress. She had a soft smile and she looked to be in her early 20s. I put down my ripper, turned off my
sewing machine and sat down. This evening dress had history. It was speaking to me. Somebody else wore this
dress many years ago. Who was she? Did she wear it to the theatre? To a fancy dinner party? And I was now tearing
it apart. I felt guilty (内疚的).
I mentioned my concerns to my daughter Nancy. She said, “Mom, you should be proud about your sewing
creations. You are keeping clothes out of the landfill (垃圾填埋场) and you’re creating new fashions from old.
Consider it a bonus if you find objects in the pockets. The clothes are talking to you!”
I agreed with her. The clothes were indeed talking to me, revealing interesting details in the pockets. Of
course, most of the upcycled clothes that I refashion don’t have surprises within. However, over the years, some
curious objects have amused me or made me pause to reflect.
All these sewing discoveries have made me enjoy refashioning clothes even more. But I have learned to be a
little gentler when I rip linings open. I decided to show respect for all my upcycling discoveries by displaying them
on a board in my sewing room. I feel like they are quietly speaking to me.

Since then I have changed hundreds of pieces of second-hand clothing into
stylish outfits for myself, my daughters and other family members.(从那以后,我把数百件二手衣服改成了时髦
This evening dress had history. It was speaking to me. Somebody else wore this
dress many years ago. Who was she? Did she wear it to the theatre? To a fancy dinner party? And I was now tearing
it apart.
Mom, you should be proud about your sewing creations. You are keeping
clothes out of the landfill (垃圾填埋场) and you’re creating new fashions from old.(妈妈,你应该为你的缝纫作
There was a hidden pocket that I failed to notice. I pulled out a small photo of a
young woman wearing the very same blue evening dress.(有一个隐藏的口袋,我没有注意到。
段中“Consider it a bonus if you find objects in the pockets.(如果你能在口袋里找到东西,那就算是奖励了)”
和划线词所在句“Of course, most of the upcycled clothes that I refashion don’t have surprises within.(当然,我

Friday night, I was struggling to choose a good movie to watch. I spent 20 minutes looking through hundreds
of choices at Amazon Video and still couldn’t decide. In the back of my mind, I was thinking that I had to choose a
great movie to watch, because if didn’t I would be wasting my time. I thought that instead of watching a bad movie,
I would be better off using my time in a more meaningful way (I see this as an opportunity cost). After seeing the
reviews and asking around for suggestions, ended up watching LaLa Land, a popular movie that most of my friends
have seen recently.
The next day, I went to Duane Reade to buy toothpaste and was overwhelmed again by the large quantity of
the choice. I started wondering if more choices empower consumers or just make them think they are empowered,
when in reality they are just at a loss.
From finding a good restaurant to searching for your life partner, everything is all about choices; big or small,
they are all related. Take dating life in New York for example. There are an endless range of choices which can lead
to many New Yorkers finding it hard to make a decision. It is a big city with a lot of lonely “I could do better”
people that are constantly searching for the next best one.
It doesn’t contradict with providing people choices and information to empower them, as there is difference
between having a reasonable number of choices and an overwhelming amount. When we are overwhelmed with the
number of choices we have, we end up less satisfied with the choice we make. You might calculate the opportunity
cost and think about “what if”.
I’ve started to realize that living a life with simplicity can sometimes be a challenge, but it is certainly worth it.
24. Why did the writer find it hard to choose a movie to watch?
A. He thought watching a bad movie wasn’t meaningful.
B. He didn’t know which movies were popular among his friends.

D. He believed it a waste of time to look through hundreds of choices.
25. What can be inferred from the text?
A. Living a simple life is always challenging.
B. More choices may lead to dissatisfaction with our decision.
C New Yorkers tend to be discontented their dating partner.
D. Opportunity cost is what we should consider when making a decision.
26. What’s the author’s attitude towards the endless choices presented to him?
A. Positive. B. Neutral. C. Unconcerned. D. Negative
27. Which of the following is the best title of the passage?
A. Less is Better B. Make Your Choice Goad C. More Choices, More Opportunities D. Simple is Better, Less
is More
【答案】24.C 25.B 26.D 27.D
