Mrs. Thompson had been a middle school math teacher for over 30 years. Her classroom was always warm,
even in winter. Most important of all, she was well-known for her insightful advice and genuine willingness to help
her students. Many of us often turned to her for guidance.
I once was extremely troubled and felt uncertain about myself after I kept failing the math exams. One day, I
decided to knock on her door.
“Mrs. Thompson, I have been trying my best,” I said, with my eyes fixing on the floor. “But I just feel that I
am stuck.”
I explained what I had done for my last math test, and told her my anxiety about the upcoming college
examination.
“My friends seem to advance effortlessly through their studies,” I added. “But I’m struggling to survive. The
fear that I’m falling behind only deepens my sense of hopelessness.”
Mrs. Thompson listened with patience. After I finished, she handed me a seedling (苗) in a pot. “Let’s plant
this in the garden,” she said gently. “Water it every day and make sure it gets enough sunlight. Please don’t focus
on its progress. Just trust that it’s growing.”
We took it to the garden in the school and planted it in a clearing so that it could get enough sunlight. Every
day after school, I faithfully watered the little plant but resisted the urge to look for some signs that my efforts were
making a difference.
A few weeks later, a tiny yellow flower caught my attention when I bent to water it. It was so pretty in the
fading sunlight that I flew to Mrs. Thompson’s office and told her the good news.
“Mrs. Thompson! It’s flowering!” I shouted.
“Let’s go and check on the plant,” Mrs. Thompson said.

As we approached the clearing, I was still filled with excitement. When I observed more closely, I was amazed
to see that the seedling had changed so much. Looking at me straight in the eye, Mrs. Thompson said gently but
firmly, “Sam, with patience and persistence, every plant would surely grow, flower and eventually bear fruit. All
you need is a little bit faith in it, just like in your studies. If you can stop comparing yourself with others and stay
more focused, your effort will surely bear fruit, too.”
Inspired by her words, my hopelessness was replaced by a sense of confidence and optimism. I realized that
my failure was just temporary if I was willing to learn lessons from my mistakes and find better ways to study. I
also saw that comparing myself to others would only make things worse. From then on, I decided to study at my
own pace, knowing that, like the seedling, I would grow and succeed in my own time. Actually, I did make it!

The spotlight burned hotter than I’d imagined. My palms left damp prints on the crumpled ( 弄皱的) speech
draft. Somewhere beyond the blinding lights, 200 students waited in the silent auditorium. Two minutes until my
turn.
Three weeks earlier, Ms. Thompson had cornered me after class. “Your essay on climate change is brilliant,”
she said, adjusting her owl-shaped glasses. “But you’ll need to speak up at the competition. Literally.” My face
burned. Last year’s disaster flashed back — my voice cracking on the first slide, the projector remote slipping from
trembling fingers. That day, I still remembered, as I stepped off the stage, my heart sank. The applause felt distant,
and my mind replayed every stumble and pause. Though disappointed, I reminded myself that this experience
would only make me stronger for the next challenge.
Now, backstage, I traced the wrinkles on my notes. A hand touched my shoulder. “Breathe through your toes,”
whispered Carlos, the drama club president who’ d coached me. His ridiculous advice made me laugh, the tension
snapping (绷断) like a rubber band.
The MC (主持人) announced my name. My shoes clicked across the stage. I was so nervous. Then I saw
them. Third row center — Mom in her faded clothes, Dad’s camera obscuring (遮蔽) his face. They’d taken double
shifts to buy me this new jacket. My throat tightened.

【答案】 I began. The first words emerged thin. But as I described polar bears swimming through
melted ice, something shifted. My hands stopped shaking. The audience leaned forward, a sea of nodding heads.
Then I talked about greenhouse effect, extreme weather and natural disasters worldwide. I also imitated Dad's
terrible coal plant impression. The timer turned red. “… and that's why we must be the generation that...” My voice
caught. The dreaded blankness.
A single clap broke the silence. Then another. Soon, the room thundered with applause I hadn't earned. My
eyes found Ms. Thompson, nodding like a metronome. I bowed, my ponytail swinging. The trophy didn't matter.
What mattered was the girl who stepped off the stage, regaining courage and confidence and already drafting her
next speech in her head. It was through this unforgettable campaign that I found something new in myself — a
persistent girl who tried her utmost to overcome her tension and failure, thus making a difference in her life!

As a middle school teacher, I’ve been blessed to guide numerous young minds throughout my career. I have
also had the privilege of shaping young minds and hearts, each with their own unique stories and challenges.
One particular year, I encountered a student named Jim, whose family circumstances were awful. Every day,
he would arrive with a simple sandwich wrapped in a piece of worn-out paper for lunch — a humble meal that
obviously contrasted with the delicate lunches brought by other students. His backpack, old and worn at the edges,
carried not just books but the weight of his family’s struggles.
One of my colleagues, Sarah, a new teacher who had just graduated, shared the same concern for Jim. She
made a proposal that we should help Jim somehow. Determined to make a difference, I, teaming up with Sarah,
made a plan to incorporate (使融入) Jim more meaningfully into our classroom community. We began by “hiring”
Jim for small tasks around the class or our school, such as helping to organize the library or assisting with
classroom setups. In return, we paid him a modest “salary” from our own funds, careful to make it clear that this
was not charity but recognition of his hard work and valuable contributions. We also took the time to instruct Jim,
offering after-school teaching lessons to help him with his studies and providing encouragement and guidance for
his future ambitions. Sarah and I made a conscious effort to create a supportive environment where Jim felt safe to
express himself. We listened to his stories, acknowledged his struggles, and celebrated his successes, no matter how
small.
However, life took an unexpected turn. Two weeks later, I had to leave the school due to unforeseen
circumstances. My heart was heavy with concern for Jim, especially about how Sarah, a young and possibly less
experienced teacher would handle this situation. I worried about whether she would be able to continue the delicate
balance of support and encouragement that we had carefully built. Moreover, Jim had become used to our regular
guidance and the stability we provided.

Thinking about all these, I couldn’t wait to give Sarah a call. With a heavy heart, I dialed Sarah’s number. My
mind raced with questions and concerns, but as soon as she picked up, her calm voice reassured me. “Don’t worry,”
she said softly. “I’ve been thinking about Jim a lot too.” And she promised to do her best to maintain the balance
we had established. She added that she wouldn’t let me down. Her words were like comforting hands, easing my
worried mind and filling me with a sense of hope.
When I revisited the school, I was amazed to see the transformation in Jim. He was no longer the quiet,
reserved student I once knew. He was actively participating in class discussions, sharing his ideas with enthusiasm.
Sarah had not only continued the support but had also encouraged him to explore his passions and talents. Seeing
Jim progress under Sarah’s guidance, I realized the true impact of sympathy and devotion in shaping a young life. It
was a powerful reminder that even in the face of challenges, with the right trust, a young teacher can grow stronger
and a child’s potential can also be developed.

Emma and I wanted a dog more than anything else. At night, we’d slip out to the roof to talk about dogs.
One summer night, as we sat together on the roof, Emma saw something. “What’s that?” She pointed down
toward a dark shadow on our driveway. I followed her finger and saw a big, black dog with long, untidy hair. We
climbed down the roof. Emma made a little kissing noise and held out her hand. It approached slowly. When she
was close enough, I stroked her gently. She was so skinny that I could feel every bone, and her coat was full of dirt.
She seemed to be a homeless dog.
We decided to bring her some food. I slid into the kitchen to fill a bowl with milk. She drank it quickly, but as
soon as she finished, she disappeared into the bushes.
The next day, we used our pocket money to buy some food for the dog, who we named Elsa. We hid the food
as we were afraid our parents wouldn’t approve of us feeding a homeless dog.
That night, as soon as we set a plate down, Elsa appeared almost as if from nowhere. She nosed at it, but for
some reason she wouldn’t eat it.
“Come on,” I urged. “Let’s leave her alone and see what happens.” So we went in and hid to spy.
Unexpectedly, Elsa grabbed the plate in her mouth and ran away. By the time we rushed back outside, she was long
gone.
This went on a long time — four or five nights, maybe. The most unusual thing was that even though Elsa
kept taking the food, she didn’t seem to be putting on any weight. If anything, she was getting even skinnier.
Then came that special night. Elsa came, but this time she barked at us, and ran back and forth. I ran my hand
through her fur, “What’s it, Elsa? What do you want?”

【答案】
Elsa barked again, ran toward the bushes, and turned to see if we were following. We exchanged puzzled
looks but decided to trust her. As we approached the bushes, we heard faint whimpering sounds. Elsa led us to a
hidden spot where we found four tiny puppies, huddled together and shivering. It dawned on us that Elsa had been
taking the food to feed her babies. She had been so skinny because she was sharing every meal with them.
Seeing this, we decided to take Elsa and her babies home together. We knew our parents might not be thrilled
at first, but we couldn’t leave this little family out in the cold. We gently picked up the puppies, cradling them in
our arms, while Elsa followed closely behind. When we explained the situation to our parents, they softened and
agreed to let us keep them. From that day on, Elsa and her puppies became a beloved part of our family, and we
learned the true meaning of love and responsibility.

As the sun rose on a seemingly ordinary day, 12-year-old Jake bid farewell to his mother, got on the bus and
embarked on his journey to school.
Then the bus came to a stop, picking up Christel, a 56-year-old woman from the next stop, smelling funky and
looking dirty and wet. Some passengers frowned at her, but she was least bothered about them. Moments later, she
wobbled (摇晃) toward an empty seat, just two seats away from Jake.
“Tickets, please?!” said the conductor to the new passengers on the bus.
The conductor gave away tickets and collected money from the passengers until he finally reached Christel’s
seat. “Hurry up... What are you digging in your bag, lady? Make it quick. $3, hurry up...”
Christel’s face slowly started to flush red. “One second, I’m looking for my purse,” she replied.
“Make it fast, lady!”
“I... uh... I don’t have money. I forgot to bring my purse,” Christel stammered (结巴), embarrassed. “I’ll just
get down at the next stop.”
“YOU DON’T HAVE MONEY FOR THE TICKET?” yelled the conductor as the crowd of passengers turned
toward Christel all at once. “Lady, this is not a charity ride that picks up beggars for free. I’m stopping the bus right
now. Get out!”
Christel was surprised. She had never met anybody before who was so rude and unkind to her, let alone in
public.
Jake witnessed everything and was disappointed at how the conductor treated the poor woman. Then he
remembered he still had some change. “HEY, WATCH YOUR WORDS, CONDUCTOR! And hey there! Your
ticket is on me!” yelled Jake.
As the bus continued on its journey, Jake and Christel struck up a conversation. “I wanted to go to a private
school where they have a nice baseball park. But my current school cannot afford such facilities,” revealed Jake.
“So you want to be a baseball player? That’s cool,” Christel said, curious.
“Yes! But I don’t want to trouble my mom. She’s already working hard in the restaurant to raise my sister and
me. I’m grateful that she can still send me to school.”
As the bus arrived at its destination, the two parted ways. Christel stared a second time at his school, watching
him disappear inside the gate. “I’ll come back for you, Jake!” she said and kept her word the next week when she
paid the school a surprise visit in her expensive car.

“Grandma! What a surprise?! What are you doing here?” exclaimed Jake after seeing Christel. Standing
rooted to the spot, he was frozen in sheer disbelief, eyes widening to their fullest extent. There she was, Christel,
elegantly dressed in a tailored outfit, gracefully emerging from what appeared to be a rather costly car. Christel
turned out to be a wealthy woman and a retired architect, contrary to what the people on the bus must have thought
of her—a poor, dirty woman. She looked at him happily and her eyes twinkled with genuine warmth and kindness,
instantly putting Jake at ease. “Jake, honey, do you mind visiting your field? I have a surprise for you there!”
Nodding his head, Jake did as he was told and hurried to the school playground, only to gasp in astonishment.
As Jake gazed upon the transformed field, his eyes welled up with tears. Out before him now was a baseball
field that had been completely changed. The once-rough, worn-out ground was now a perfect one. Brand-new
equipment, polished to a high shine and neatly arranged in an orderly fashion around the field, seemed to appeal to
him forward. Overwhelmed by the magnificent sight, tears rolled down his cheeks. He felt a flood of gratitude
welling up inside him towards Christel. This newly transformed baseball field was not merely a place to engage in
sport; it was also a message of belief, of unwavering support. This heartwarming tale of unexpected connections
and transformative acts of kindness serves as a reminder that the power to make a difference is within us all.

He had finally allowed it. Today, for the first time, I was shopping on my own.
It felt like a small victory, but to me, it meant everything. Ever since I tuned fourteen last month, I had been
begging my dad to let me go places alone. I wasn’t a little kid anymore — I could handle myself. But my dad, who
had always been overprotective, wasn’t convinced. He said the world wasn’t as safe as I thought, that there were
dangers I wasn’t ready for. Maybe it was because I was his only child, or may be it was because of the time I got
lost at the county fair when I was seven, sending him into a full-blown panic. I had only been missing for twenty
minutes, but to him, it felt like hours. He never let me out of his sight after that.
But I was older now. I needed my independence.
This morning, after weeks of pleading, he had finally relented. With a sigh, he pulled a crisp twenty-dollar bill
from his wallet and handed it to me.
“Call me if you need anything,” he had said, his brow furrowed in concern.
“I’ll be fine, Dad,” I had replied, rolling my eyes but secretly thrilled.
Now, as I wandered through the aisles (过道) of Walmart, I felt a rush of independence. I lingered (逗留) in
the beauty section, picking up different bottles of shampoo, comparing labels, and enjoying the simple pleasure of
making my own choices. No one was there to hurry me along or tell me what to buy. I was free, and it felt amazing.
Then, out of nowhere, a woman hurried toward me. She looked to be in her forties, with short, dark hair and a
worried expression.
“I don’t mean to scare you,” she said in a hushed voice, “but there’s a man following you. He’s been peeking
(偷窥) at you from the next aisle.”

My heart stopped. What? This was exactly what my dad had warned me about. The dangers of being alone, of
wandering through stores without someone watching out for me. For a moment, panic gripped me, my mind racing
through every possibility. I swallowed hard. “Who is it?” The woman gave a small nod toward the cleanser aisle.
“That’s him.” I turned my head cautiously, my pulse racing. And then I caught a glimpse of the familiar gray jacket.
It was my dad.
I sighed, shaking my head with a knowing smile. “That’s my father,” I told the woman. She laughed softly and
then walked away. I turned and made my way toward him. I raised an eyebrow and asked, “Dad, were you
following me?” He hesitated, then let out a small sigh. “I just wanted to make sure you were okay.” I should have
been annoyed. But as I looked at him — the concern in his eyes — I realized something. This wasn’t about him not
trusting me. This was about love.

It was very cold outside, but Grandpa still wanted to take his routine walk. “Do you want to take a walk with
me, Tyler?”
Looking at his mother, Tyler said, “I think it’s too cold outside for Grandpa to go out today.”
“The fresh air and the greeting will be good for him,” Mama said. “Grandpa doesn’t want to miss waving at
the neighbors. When they wave back, it makes him happy, too.”
“I’m coming, Grandpa,” Tyler called back.
Tyler walked out of the front door and saw Grandpa wrapping a gray scarf around his neck and putting on his
red hat there. “I do hope I can meet the neighbors on such a cold day,” said Grandpa.
Since Grandma died, Grandpa still walked along the same route every day as they had done before and the
neighbors had become so used to his presence, especially his red hat, that they usually greeted Grandpa even when
he did not see them. When Grandpa and Tyler turned a corner, they saw an old man wearing a black hat and scarf.
“Hi, Henry,” Grandpa said. “I don’t see you out much these days.”
“My doctor suggests I take walks for my health, but I really don’t want to get out,” Henry complained and
pulled his scarf up over his mouth and nose. “It’s still autumn, but it feels like the dead of winter.”
Suddenly, a strong wind blew off both men’s hats, which flew toward a nearby pond. Tyler ran after the hats
and grabbed Grandpa’s just in time, while Henry’s went into the pond. He fished it out of the water and returned it
to Henry.
“It’s wet. Just throw it away. I’ll have to buy a new one,” Henry said coldly and walked away. Henry seemed

Tyler caught up with Henry and handed the red hat to him. Noticing the skeptical look on Henry’s face, Tyler
suggested that he could do the shopping for him. Henry hesitated for a moment and eventually accepted the hat and
put it on his head. Just then, a car passed by, and the driver, who might mistake Henry for Grandpa, waved and
shouted cheerfully, “Good morning, Grandpa in red hat!” Henry’s face lit up and he waved back. “Would you
please find a red hat for me, too? I think it’s time to try a different color,” Henry said shyly.

After an overnight flight, I arrived in Austin, exhausted, to host an event on positive thinking. As I stepped into
the lecture hall, Dr. Gary inquired, “Are you familiar with the Make-A-Wish Foundation?” “Yes,” I responded.
“There’s a 15-year-old boy named Jason. He’s been diagnosed with terminal cancer and has only three days left.
His last wish was to attend your lecture.”
I was stunned, a mix of awe and doubt washing over me. I couldn’t believe it! I’d always assumed that
children, especially those dying ones, would rather go to Disneyland or someplace similar. Why would a kid with
just three days to live choose to spend his final days listening to me, a motivational speaker? My thoughts were
interrupted...
“Hi! Here’s Jason.” Standing before me was a boy wearing a bright red hat to cover his bald head, a result of
extensive treatments. His weak body slightly bent, he said, “I have two goals: to graduate from high school and to
attend your lecture. My doctors didn’t think I could achieve either, considering how weak I am and how little
energy I have.”
Tears welling up in my eyes, I was overcome with emotion. Swiftly, I cleared my throat and smiled, “Thank
you for wanting to be here.” We embraced, smiled, and separated.
Later that afternoon when my lecture started, Jason and his parents showed up. The hall was filled with over a
thousand attendees, all eager to learn, grow, and better themselves. I humbly asked the audience if they were
interested in learning a healing (治愈的) process that could benefit them for a lifetime. From the stage, it seemed as
though everyone had their hands raised high in the air. I demonstrated how to vigorously rub (揉, 搓) their hands
together, separate them by two inches, and sense the healing energy. Then, I paired them up with a partner to feel
the transfer of the healing energy from themselves to another, explaining that everyone has the potential to heal and
support others.

pale face gradually flushed with color, and his breathing became steadier. “I can feel it,” he whispered, his voice
trembling with wonder.
With a big round of applause, Jason’s dad gently guided him off the stage. Tears streamed down his
parents’ faces as they hugged their son tightly. The entire audience rose to their feet, giving Jason a standing
ovation that lasted several minutes. Though weak, Jason stood straighter, his eyes shining with newfound hope.
That evening, I received news that Jason’s vital signs had remarkably improved—his doctors called it a miracle.

Before the COVID pandemic, my Dad always came home late. from work — cleaning pools. Mom t old us we
needed to wait for dinner so all of us could eat together. I didn’t mind. If Dad was late, it meant I could spend more
time outside playing basketball with my brother. Even. though occupied with work, Dad always made time to show
his care. After noticing our love for ball games, he bought us a backboard and hoop (篮筐) and hired someone to
install a tall metal pole beside the driveway, giving us our own basketball court.
My brother and I would shoot baskets from morning to night if Mom allowed, but she insisted homework
came first. Still, during the summer months, between part-time jobs like delivering newspapers, cutting lawns, and
helping Dad clean pools, we spent nearly every spare moment on the court. We practiced all sorts of shots and tried
to sharpen our skills by sending the ball through legs, passing it behind our backs, and dribbling (运球) without
looking at the ball. It felt like magic — all the problems of the world seemed to fade away — and I felt like I was
the magician making the magic happen each time I shot the ball toward the basket and watched it fly toward its
destination.
Dad once told me he felt pretty much the same way about cleaning pools. Well, almost the same. It was like
being a magician, he said, turning the water from cloudy to clear so the pool sparkled. It was one of the things Dad
and I shared — the ability to see’ magic in things. Lately, though, it didn’t seem like Dad saw much magic
anywhere. I could tell he was worried when he came home each night. He’d lost more customers due to COVID
and job losses.
One day, I was squeezing my brother to put in another layup when I heard the familiar engine. It was earlier
than usual, and the sky was still bright for a change. “Hey, guys!” Dad said, stepping out. His shoulders slumped
forward with tiredness, and worry filled his eyes.

“Want to shoot a few hoops, Dad?” I asked. He paused, looking at the hoop. “I haven’t played for years,” he
said, walking over to the court and rolling up his sleeves. His movements were stiff at first, but as he took a shot
and the ball swished through the net, his shoulders seemed to lift slightly. “Not bad for an old man, huh?” he joked,
and I saw a glimmer of the magic he used to see in everything. Just then the floodlight over the garage flashes on
and off. That’s Mom. She signaled that dinner was ready.
The three of us headed home for dinner. Over the meal, he shared stories about his early days playing
basketball, and for the first time in weeks, laughter filled the room. He also mentioned rebuilding his business
slowly,” Just like perfecting a jump shot — one step at a time.” Later, I glanced out the window at the court, its net
swaying in the twilight. Maybe the magic wasn’t gone — it just needed a little polishing, like Dad’s pools or our
rusty hoop.

who has left a mark on my early educational journey. Even to this day, the memory of her presence is as clear as a
well-polished mirror.
I remember the very first day I stepped into her classroom, feeling a mix of nervousness and excitement. As I
looked up, there she was, standing with a warm and comforting smile. I was immediately struck by her similarity to
Walt Disney’s Snow White. Her bright blue eyes were like two clear, glistening pools, full of kindness and a spark
of playfulness. Her short dark hair framed her face neatly, giving her an air of approachability. Her fair skin added
to her kind and gentle appearance. I was convinced then that she must be some older, wiser relation of the beloved
Snow White.
Every day in her class, we would be given a topic, simple as it might be, like “My Favorite Toy” or “A Day in
the Park”. I would sit at my tiny desk, my tongue sticking out in concentration, as I tried to put my thoughts into
words. Then, we would all hand in our papers. When the papers were handed out, to my delight, there would
always be a shiny gold star, carefully drawn. Sometimes, if I was really lucky, a big, scrawled “Good!” would be
written across the top. Those simple words and that little star had a magical effect on me. My heart would soar with
happiness, as if I had just won a great prize.
One evening, I brought back my “perfect” work home to show it to my mom. Her face expressed a slight
worry as she read each page. I could tell something was wrong. “Sweet heart,” she said, surrounding concerned,
“there are so many mistakes here. How are you going to learn if no one corrects them?”

Mom decided to telephone Mrs. White to get some answers. The phone call was brief but eye-opening. Mrs.
White patiently explained her teaching philosophy. She said, “I focus on encouraging the kids’ creativity and
confidence first. At this age, the joy of expressing themselves matters more than grammar and spelling. The stars
and ‘Good!’ are to make them feel proud of their work, so they keep writing.” Mom was initially taken aback but
gradually understood. When she told me about the conversation, I realized how special Mrs. White’s method was. It
was not about perfection but about fostering a love for writing.
I’m now an English teacher, helping young students improve their writing skills. Mrs. White’s influence is
evident in my teaching approach. I, too, prioritize nurturing students’ enthusiasm. As learnt from Mrs. White,
Spelling and grammar can wait. When they hand in their first drafts, full of errors but brimming with ideas, I resist
the urge to correct every mistake immediately. Instead, I highlight their strengths, just like Mrs. White did with her
gold stars. I write positive comments to boost their confidence. I know that by doing so, I am passing on the gift of
self-belief that Mrs. White gave me all those years ago, and I hope my students will carry that with them
throughout their lives.

It was a seemingly ordinary day when the crew of the fishing boat, the “Ocean Breeze”, set sail from the small
coastal town of Seaview with its mast ( 桅杆) standing firm. Captain Jack, a seasoned sailor with decades of
experience, led the team of five young and eager fishermen. The sun shone brightly, and the sea was relatively calm
as they headed out to their usual fishing grounds.
As the day wore on, the sky began to darken. Clouds rolled in from the horizon, and the wind picked up speed.
Captain Jack noticed the change in the weather and decided it was time to head back to shore. But as they turned
the boat around, they realized they were in trouble. The waves had grown into towering monsters, crashing against
the hull (船体) of the “Ocean Breeze” with a force that made the boat shudder (颤动).
The crew members, who had initially been excited about the day’s catch, now, faced a terrifying situation.
Rain lashed down, reducing visibility to almost zero. One of the fishermen, Tom, a young lad on his first long-
distance fishing trip, was visibly shaken. “Captain, what are we going to do?” he shouted over the howling wind.
Captain Jack, his face set with determination, barked out orders. “Everyone, stay calm! Secure the equipment
and hold on tight!” he yelled. The crew quickly sprang into action, tying down loose ropes and making sure the
hatches (舱口) were tightly closed. But the storm was relentless (不停的). The boat was tossed from side to side,
and water started to leak in through the cracks.
Suddenly, a massive wave hit the boat, causing it to tilt dangerously. Tom lost his balance and was thrown
towards the railing (栏杆). He clung on for dear life, his hands slipping on the wet metal. “Help!” he screamed.
At that moment, Mike, another crew member, grabbed Tom’s arm and pulled him back onto the deck. “Are
you okay?” Mike shouted. Tom nodded, his eyes wide with fear.
The situation on the boat grew more desperate by the minute. The engine sputtered ( 发出噼啪声), and for a
moment, it seemed as if it would die completely. Captain Jack fought to keep the boat steady, but the storm showed
no signs of abating (减弱).

【答案】 Just when they thought things couldn’t get any worse, lightning struck the mast of the
“Ocean Breeze”. The mast, already weakened by the fierce winds, cracked loudly and began to collapse. Flames
sparked from the broken electrical wires, and the bitter smell of burning filled the air. The boat, struggling against
the fierce waves, suddenly tilted severely to one side. Water rushed in the damaged hull and the engine finally
stopped completely. Tom cried out in despair. The whole crew was thrown into disorder and panic, a sense of
overwhelming horror washing over them.
Despite the chaos, Captain Jack refused to give up. “We’ve faced tough times before, and we’ll get through
this one!” he gathered the crew, urging them to work together. Inspired by the captain, the crew settled down and
obeyed his direction. Some pushed the broken mast aside, while others tried to repair the damaged engine. With
each passing minute, their efforts paid off. The fire was extinguished and the engine started running again.
Exhausted but relieved, the crew watched the dark clouds parting slowly. They had survived the storm, a testament
to their team spirit and Captain Jack’s unwavering leadership.

The weather had been unusually hot. My wife Pat and I were having a cup of coffee on our deck. There was
rarely any breeze, and it was extremely wet. The sky turned dark. Lightning danced across the sky, accompanied by
low, rumbling (隆隆的) thunder. The heavy air seemed to press down on us, adding to our discomfort and unease.
Suddenly, the phone rang. It was our son, David, an Army helicopter pilot. Three months earlier, he had begun
a one-year assignment in a demilitarized zone (非武装区) in South Korea. David made an effort to sound cheerful,
but as a man who had spent time during World War II on a small South Pacific island, I recognized the strong sense
of homesickness.
A booming clap of thunder shook again.
“What was that?” David asked. “It sounded like an explosion.” “Just thunder,” Pat said.
There were several seconds of silence. “David,” I asked, “Are you still there?”
“I was thinking about what Mother said — ‘just thunder’. Other than the two of you, do you know what I miss
most of all — what many of the men say they miss? Thunder. We have rain, wind, snow, and some violent storms,
but never thunder.” “Remember, Dad, when I was a boy, how the two of us would stretch out on the floor and listen
to the thunder? I wish I were there now to listen with you,” he said softly.
As soon as I hung up the phone, I got my tape recorder, my large umbrella and a wooden chair. “I’m going to
record our son some thunder,” I told Pat. With lightning flashing across the sky like a display of fireworks, I sat in
the driving rain beneath my umbrella and recorded half an hour of the finest Mississippi thunder a lonely man could
ever want to hear. The next day I mailed the tape to David with a single line: “A special gift.”

【答案】
David called again three weeks later. This time he was his old self. “Dad,” he said, “you won’t believe it! I
invited some friends over and we listened to the tape together — instant silence, and then a few minutes of sadness.
But once we realized we were listening to the sounds of home, we felt better and connected with the people we
missed, like we’d been relieved of a heavy burden. I can’t tell you how much that tape meant to me,” he continued,
“Thanks, Dad! It was really a special gift.”
From then on, thunder had different meanings for Pat and me. For the next eight months, while David was in
Korea, we found ourselves expecting thunderstorms. Rather than feeling depressed on gloomy days, we regarded
the storms as a special gift, which seemed to tie us closer to a son so far from home. It was no longer just a sound to
us but a bond, a reminder of love that stretched across the miles and brought us lose, no matter how far apart we
were.

Why was our neighbor from across the street crazily pounding on our front door at night? She was screaming
for us to open it. We rah lo the door, and she said only one word as she took off running: “FIRE!” Then she let us
know that she had already called 119.
We ran out just as the fire engines raced onto our street. The fire was huge! Flames were shooting wildly out
of the windows and through the roof of the hundred-year-old, three-story house next door. The flames were so tall
that they were visible a few miles away. Our house smelled of smoke. The whole neighborhood smelled of smoke.
My husband raced next door to ensure our neighbors had gotten out. All family members were outside and
safe, including the dog. He ran to the houses on the other street that backed up to the house on fire and banged (猛
敲) on those doors to ensure the neighbors were safe, too. Luckily, they were!
Our street was crowded with fire trucks, eleven in all. One engine had a monster light on it that made the street
bright enough so that it looked like it was high noon on a sunny day. The paramedics (救护人员) and ambulances
also came in case they were needed. Thank goodness, they were not. Our house became kind of a “safe house” with
our next-door neighbors coming and going, as needed. It was a safe place for their dog, too.
After around two hours, the fire was completely contained. Amazingly, the house was not a total loss. Most of
it, while smoky and damp, could be saved. And only a few important items were lost. Only two rooms and a
hallway would need to be reconstructed. The rest of the house could be cleaned and aired out.
Everyone was okay. Their gratitude for the firefighters was overwhelming. They couldn’t stop saying “Thank
you.” They expressed their gratitude to us many times for opening our house to them. It was a small thing for us,
but tremendous for them.

The next day, there were a lot of activities going on in our neighborhood. People who had been affected by the
fire were busy sorting through their belongings, trying to salvage what they could. Volunteers came to help,
bringing food, water, and clothes to those in need. The community center organized a donation drive, which was a
great success. Everyone was doing what they could to support each other during this difficult time. It was
heartwarming to see how our neighborhood came together in the face of adversity.
As weeks went by, the house was slowly but steadily being rebuilt. Workers who specialized in construction
were hired to fix the damage. Although it was a long and arduous process, the family who lived there remained
hopeful. They said that they were grateful for the support from the community, which had given them the strength
to keep going. We all looked forward to the day when they could move back into their restored home and start their
lives anew. It was a reminder of the power of community and the importance of looking out for one another.

Years ago, Virginia Squier led a group of middle school students on an educational tour to England.
Accompanying her was her young daughter, Chambers, who was just eight years old at the time.
One evening, near the end of the visit, Squier, Chambers and the school group were on a platform of the
subway and got ready to head to their next destination. It was 5 pm and the station was rather packed. Squier had
been holding Chambers’ hand tightly to keep her close. However, as she momentarily let go to count her students
and ensure everyone was present, a train pulled into the station.
In the chaos of the moment, Chambers, caught up in the flow of the crowd, inadvertently (不经意地) stepped
onto the train. Squier only realized what had happened as the train doors began to close. Panic rushed to Squier as
she saw Chambers inside the carriage. Desperately, she tried to board the train to bring Chambers back out, but it
was too late. The doors were shut, and the train began to move, gradually picking up speed.
Squier’s heart raced as she ran alongside the train, her eyes locked on her daughter through the glass window.
Chambers’ face was a picture of fear and confusion, her small fists pounding against the window as she cried out
for her mother. Beside her stood a man dressed. in black leather, his dark glasses adding an air of mystery — and,
to Squier, a sense of dread(恐惧). Her mind raced with unpleasant thoughts about who this man might be and what
his intentions were. As the train disappeared into the tunnel, Squier was left standing on the platform, paralyzed (使
瘫痪) by fear and helplessness.
Fighting back tears, Squier acted quickly and turned to the platform for help. Her voice trembled as she
struggled to convey what had happened. With all that done, she was waiting anxiously.

【答案】Before Squier got the news from the platform, one of her students suddenly shouted, “Look!
Chambers is back!” Squier raised her head, and to her great relief, there stood her little girl, safe and sound.
Overwhelmed with emotion, she rushed to Chambers and hugged her tightly, tears streaming down her face. Then
she noticed the man in black leather standing a few steps behind her daughter. Chambers explained that the man
had witnessed what happened and immediately stepped in to help. He had comforted her, guided her off the train at
the next stop, and brought her back on a returning train to reunite with her mother.
Squier’s first thought that the man was frightening was completely wrong. She was flooded with gratitude and
regret. Before she could properly thank him, however, the man quietly walked away, disappearing into the crowd.
Squier wished she could find him to express how deeply his kindness had impacted her. The experience left a
lasting impression on Squier. Not only had the man saved her daughter, but he had also taught her a valuable lesson
about not judging others based on their appearance. To this day, whenever Squier catches herself making
assumptions about someone’s character based on how they look, she remembers the man in black leather.

Our ten-year-old son, Eric, was a happy but hyperactive (多动症) child. Although he was quite bright and had
a warm spirit with a bright smile lighting up his face, he had learning difficulties in focusing on reading and
writing. He struggled with understanding instructions or remembering new information, causing him to fall behind
in class. The psychologist did the tests that showed he liked animals, so we took in two rabbits, hoping that caring
for them would improve his condition.
One Sunday morning, a warm little hand urgently patted my cheek. “Mom, wake up! There’s a big storm. We
have to bring in Bucket and Captain!” Instinctively, I reached for my husband, Larry, but he was on a business trip.
I turned on the light. Eric leaped up on the bed to peek through the curtains. The window was covered with
driving snow. “Let’s go, Mom. We have to save them!”
We stuffed ourselves into some winter clothes and hurried to the yard. Eric went charging out into the snow-
filled darkness to the rabbit hutches. “You get Captain,” he shouted through the howling wind, already holding
Bucket, a white male rabbit, back to the house. I dragged Captain from the cage into the room and surprisingly
found that Eric was busy preparing something. His face was serious and focused without noticing that the rabbit
was eating the telephone cord (电话线).
Soon, the rabbits bounced around playfully, feeding on fresh vegetables. Eric took a moment to observe their
behaviors and gently touched their fur, whispering southing words of comfort. He also got the rabbits to rest in a
nest made of towels and blankets in front of the fireplace and even read them his favorite books. Time seemed to
have stood still.
Larry returned ahead of time, “What is going on here?”, staring at Eric. “I got worried when I couldn’t reach
you, so I caught an earlier flight,” he explained. “Did you know the phone is out of order?”

【答案】Eric rushed to Larry and told him what had happened. His eyes were wide with excitement as he
recounted the stormy adventure. “Dad, it was so scary! The snow was so thick, but we saved Bucket and Captain,”
Eric babbled. Larry listened attentively, his initial confusion replaced by a warm smile. “You did a great job, son.
Taking care of the rabbits in such a tough situation shows how much you’ve grown,” Larry praised. Eric beamed
with pride, his cheeks flushed. Then, they laughed together about the chewed-up phone cord, with Eric promising
to be more careful next time.
With days passing by, Eric had a big change. In school, he no longer fidgeted in his seat. His teachers were
amazed at his new-found ability to focus during lessons. At home, he became more organized. He made a schedule
for feeding and cleaning the rabbits, and even started to help with other household chores. His reading improved as
he often read aloud to the rabbits. Moreover, his social skills blossomed. He shared stories about the rabbits with
his classmates, making more friends.

The Popsicle Kids
A nearly empty box of Popsicles (棒冰) in the freezer, left from a grandchild’s visit, caught my attention.
Initially, I wanted to throw it away, but my wife suggested we give the remaining Popsicles to the neighborhood
children. Her suggestion changed our life and led us to a future full of “Popsicle Kids.” My wife and I, retired on
Social Security, live in an apartment complex. After careers in sales and nursing, our daily concerns revolved
around aches, pains, and dinner. We often wondered what good we were to the world.
That changed dramatically after we gave away the first Popsicle.
Minutes after watching a neighbor boy, a second grader, walk away with an icy treat, our doorbell rang. An
adorable blond girl, about six, smiled sweetly, “Is it true you’re giving away Popsicles?”
With the box empty, we returned to our concerns.
Early the next morning, the doorbell rang repeatedly. Standing on our porch were the four children from the
previous day. They vocalized their wants, chanting (有节奏地喊), “We want Popsicles! We want Popsicles!”
Looking into their eager young faces, I wondered, “What have I started?” Sensing a victory, they nodded
eagerly when I explained the rules: ring the bell once, one Popsicle per day, and share something good about their
day. But their thin shoulders bent downwards in disappointment when I mentioned they had to give something in
return. I came to the rescue, suggesting they share something positive about their day, like what they learned at
school or helping another student. Over time, new rules were added: “Ladies first,” “Don’t interrupt,” and
“Properly get rid of the sticks.”
On holidays, they expressed their understanding of why the day was celebrated. Over the years, about fifty
youngsters visited. Some became part of my life, like the four kids who joined me on the steps one spring to read
“Where the Red Fern Grows.” We discussed catching crawfish, loving pets, and family relationships. This simple
act of sharing Popsicles transformed our life, bringing joy and meaning to both the children and ourselves.

【答案】
One night, another boy appeared at the door, saying “I don’t want a Popsicle; I just need to talk”. Surprised
but concerned, I invited him in and offered a seat. He sat on the couch, looking down at his shoes, his face filled
with anxiety. Slowly, he opened up about the argument he had with his best friend at school that day. I listened
attentively, nodding occasionally to show I was there for him. After he poured out his feelings, I shared some
stories of my own childhood conflicts and how I resolved them. By the end of our talk, his frown had turned into a
faint smile. Before leaving, he thanked me earnestly, and I realized that our little Popsicle tradition had become a
safe haven for these kids.
I’ve sensed it’s more than Popsicles that bring these kids to our door. Beyond the sweet treats, it’s the sense of
trust and understanding we’ve built. We’ve become their confidants, their listening ears. For us, these interactions
have filled our retired life with purpose and warmth. We’ve witnessed their growth, their joys, and their sorrows.
Each time the doorbell rings, it’s not just the anticipation of sharing a Popsicle but an opportunity to connect, to
offer comfort, and to be a part of these young lives. In return, they’ve given us a new perspective on life and a
deeper appreciation for the simple yet profound power of human connection.
