Most of us have formed an unreal picture of life on a desert island. We sometimes imagine it to be a kind of
heaven where the sun always shines, life is simple, and nature gives us everything. The other side of the picture is
quite the opposite — you either starve to death or live like Robinson Crusoe, waiting for a boat which never comes.
Maybe both ideas are partly true. Still, few of us have had the chance to know what desert island life is really like.
Three men had such a chance not long ago. Their names were Jack, Tom. and Robin. They were moving a
badly broken boat from the Virgin Islands to Miami for fixing. Halfway, the boat started to go down. In fear, Jack
took a small rubber boat while Tom quickly picked up what they could — some food, matches, and cans of beer.
Robin, the calmest of the three, helped tie everything together and gave each man some water before they set off.
With sore muscles and nervous hearts, they rowed for hours before at last reaching a small coral island.
But the island was far from heaven. There were almost no trees and no clean water. The empty land and hard
truth quickly broke their dream. The three men sat in silence, looking at the sea. Robin tried to stay hopeful and
said, “we are lucky to be alive.” Jack and Tom nodded, but worry was in their eyes.
Facing an unknown future, they knew they had to use the few things they brought and anything they could
find on the island. With no way to talk to others and no idea when — or if — they would be saved, they got ready
to face what was ahead. Robin said, “We must take turns watching the sea, keeping the fire on. and looking for
help.” He looked at his friends and added, “No one is coming today, but maybe someone will come tomorrow.”

One day, a good friend gave me a gift. It was a book filled with interesting and uplifting stories. I remember
I began reading it that very night. And I would read a story or two before going to bed each night.
One evening I read a story about hugging called “It Can’t Happen Here?” The opening quotation by Virginia
Satir said we need four hugs a day for survival, eight for maintenance (保持) and twelve hugs a day to grow.
I read this story on a Tuesday. I knew it was Tuesday because on Wednesday I walked into my classroom and
declared that every Wednesday would be known as “Hugging Day.”I told my students everyone needs hugs to live
and grow.
I was already a hugger and had always greeted my students with a warm hug each morning. But after reading
the story in this new book, I decided that on Hugging Day everyone needed to make sure they got at least twelve
hugs. I wanted my students to grow. All hugs didn’t have to come from me, but I was ready, willing, and able to
give as many as needed.
My students lined up at my desk with questions and left with a hug. They hugged me before and after lunch.
They hugged me when they came to school in the morning and when they left for home in the afternoon. And
perhaps best of all, the children in my classroom hugged each other.
Every Wednesday, my students counted their hugs to make sure they were getting their fair share. I continued
the practice for several years. Through the years, I hugged all kinds of kids — those who were untidy and those
who were clean, children who were gifted academically and others whose gifts lay elsewhere. Among them, Nicole,
one of my students, stood out for her enthusiasm about Hugging Day. She was a shy girl who rarely spoke up in
class, but on Hugging Day, she would always be the first to line up to hug me. I could see how much a hug meant
to her.

Uncle Richard’s New Year Dinner
Prissy Baker was buying matches in Mr. Miller’s store when her uncle, Richard Baker, came in. He did not
look at Prissy, nor did she wish him a happy New Year. Uncle Richard had not been on speaking terms with her or
her father, his only brother, for eight years.
He was a big prosperous-looking man, an uncle to be proud of, Prissy thought. If only he were like other
people’s uncles, or like what he used to be himself. He was Prissy’s only uncle, and when she had been a little girl
they had been great friends, but that was before the quarrel over the division of a property with Prissy’s father.
Uncle Richard informed Mr. Miller that he was on his way to Navarre with a load of pork. “I have to deliver
the pork at once or I have to do business on New Year,” said Uncle Richard. “Shouldn’t New Year be pretty much
the same as any other day to you,” joked Miller, knowing Richard was a bachelor living alone. “Well, I always like
a good dinner on New Year,” said Uncle Richard. “It’s the only way I can celebrate. I got everything ready in the
kitchen last night, but I won’t get back before one o’clock. Maybe I’ll have to put up with a cold bite.”
After Uncle Richard drove away, Prissy headed home, thoughtfully. She didn’t mean to cook dinner, for her
parents had to go to the town that morning. There was nobody else to cook for. Prissy could not help thinking about
Uncle Richard. He would certainly have cold New Year cheer, enough to chill the whole coming year. She felt sorry
for him, picturing him returning from Navarre, cold and hungry, only a fireless house and an uncooked dinner
waiting for him. Suddenly an idea popped into Prissy’s head. Dared she?

Aria was a little artist. With her mother’s birthday nearing, Aria knew what to do! She would design a lovely
gift for her mother!
Aria remembered her visit to the museum and the amazing sculpture she’d seen there. It was made of many
different materials — cloth, feathers, glitter (发光物), paper, and paint. Aria loved the mix of materials. Aria went
to her desk and started creating her masterpiece. First, she painted the paper. A bit of red. “Now, I’ll add some green
and yellow,” she thought as she worked away.
The background of Mom’s gift looked fantastic. Aria used all the colors of a rainbow to create a lovely
painting. Then, she wanted to decorate it with some feathers. She carefully removed the feathers, one by one, from
the old hat and started gluing them on. Once she finished with the glue, she needed to wait for it to dry.
Aria played with her little dog out in the garden for quite a long time and then went back to her desk to see
whether the glue was dry. “No! No! No!” Aria started screaming when she saw her art or what was left of it.
While Aria was playing outside with her dog, her little brother entered her room and saw the art. The little
boy couldn’t resist it. He pulled some feathers and scribbled (i El) all over her art with crayons.
“What have you done? You destroyed Mom’s gift! How could you?” Aria screamed.
But then, Aria looked at her brother. The little boy almost started crying, hearing Aria’s angry voice.
“Sorry, Aria,” he said. “I just wanted to make a gift for Mom too. Please, don’t be mad at.me.”
Aria’s anger disappeared immediately. She felt so bad for what she’d said to her brother. He just wanted to
help her with the gift. He was still so little.

“Are you OK?” asked Daddy. Our car had slid off the country road into a snowdrift (雪堆). Daddy tried to
start the car. Nothing happened. “We’re stuck,” he said. Even worse, his phone’s battery had run out.
Thankfully, we got Grandma’s worry box. We pulled out a blanket, hats, gloves, a fat candle, matches, and
chocolate bars from the box. “Your grandma is a worrier, but she’s smart. I’ll try to listen to her advice and stay put
during the next storm warning.”
The white wind pounded the car as we moved to the back seat. “Would the young lady care to snuggle ( 依
偎)?” Daddy wrapped the blanket around us and over our heads. He lit the candle. A weak warmth filled our
blanket tent. “We need to think warm,” said Daddy. “How about a warm song game?”
Then we began to sing warm songs, like “You Are My Sunshine.” We clapped and stamped as the white
wind blew over the car. However, when our teeth chattered (打颤), it just made the songs sound silly.
“Will we stay here all night?” I asked. “I don’t think so,” Daddy said. “Grandma knows when we left, and
Mom knows when we’re due home. They’ll have people looking for us when the snowstorm blows over.”
“But while we wait, how about a warm-thought contest? Whoever thinks of the warmest thought wins this
handy, nutritious, delicious chocolate bar,” added Daddy. “You start.”
I thought. “Hot chocolate?”
“Pretty good.” said Daddy. “What about...sunburn on your shoulders.”
I said, “How about...wearing my furry coat.”
“And while you’re wearing your furry coat, you’re roasting hot dogs over a campfire.”
“And the campfire is on a sunny beach in California…in August!” added. “Top that, Daddy.”
“Hmm... got it!?” said Daddy. “The warmest thought of all time. Ready? Taking a swim in a pool of boiling
chicken noodle soup. And you’re not allowed to hold onto noodles.”
I laughed. “You win this handy, nutritious, delicious chocolate bar!”
Daddy split it with me. We saved the other one for later.

The fairy lights twinkled (闪烁) on the Christmas tree as my baby slept peacefully in his bassinet (摇篮).
“Are you sure we’ve got everything?” my husband, Nick, 39, called out.
I rolled my eyes and dragged the last of our bags into the hallway.
“Yes, I’ve checked and checked again,” I replied.
Nick and I had been married for two years when we had our first child, Frank, eight months. Since he’d
arrived, we’d collected endless amounts of baby equipment that needed to come on trips with us.
Nick and I put it all into the car. “Right, let’s hit the road,” Nick smiled, turning to me from the driver’s seat.
We were heading to my mum’s for the festive season and I couldn’t wait to spend Christmas with my family. It was
Frank’s first Christmas and it was set to be a huge occasion.
My brother and sister and their families, travelled down for the big day and I knew my mum, Sue, would go
all out in the kitchen. She cooked really well. When we came in on Christmas Eve, the delicious smell of roast
turkey and all the side dishes filled the kitchen.
“It smells great, Mum,” I said happily.
“I’ve done a few meats this year,” she said. “Chicken, a joint of beef and a turkey.”
“You spoil (宠坏) us!” I said.
We all clinked (碰杯) our glasses together and started eating the delicious Christmas meal. I said, “Happy
Christmas!” and held up my drink. Everyone laughed and cheered, and I felt so grateful to be with my family.
The next day, I was in the kitchen preparing lunch for Frank when disaster struck. I was slicing some
vegetables with a sharp knife when I accidentally cut my finger. Blood flowed out and I dropped the knife in shock.

On an extremely hot summer day, I got on a long-distance bus, my heart filled with excitement. The air was
thick with heat, but my spirits were high as I thought about the upcoming get-together with my family. The bus
pulled out of the station, entered the highway, and I settled into my seat, ready for the six-hour journey ahead.
As the miles passed by, the initial excitement began to decline, replaced by a growing unease. My head
started to feel light, as if it were stuffed with cotton. Sweat drops appeared on my forehead, making my hair wet. I
looked around the bus, hoping to find a familiar face, but all I saw were strangers' faces. There was nobody I could
ask for help, which added to my discomfort, making me feel more nervous.
To make matters worse, I had been in such a hurry to catch the bus that I had forgotten to bring any extra
money. This meant I couldn't even buy a bottle of water or some medicine to make myself feel better. I held my
fists tight, trying my best to stop the feeling of sickness. I didn't want to draw attention to myself, so I tried to sit as
still as possible, hoping the discomfort would disappear on its own.
The bus ran along the highway, the constant sickness adding to my unease. Time seemed to stretch endlessly,
each minute feeling longer than the last. My discomfort grew more pronounced, and I began to feel increasingly
lightheaded. The bus shook slightly as it traveled the winding road, and each turn felt like a shake to my already
delicate state. I found it difficult to focus on anything other than the growing unease, my thoughts circling around
the same worries and fears.
I closed my eyes, trying to block out the noise and movement. I took deep breaths, trying to calm myself, but
the air felt heavy and unrefreshing. I thought I couldn't bear it any longer.

Talent Night
I had a problem —Talent Night was coming up, but I had no talent.
Let me introduce myself: Benjamin Belinski, Human Talent Void ( 空缺). Kate can make anything using
paper folding. Tommy creates breath-taking beats on overturned plastic buckets. Olivia trains her pet dog to do
tricks. And those are just my friends. My class also boasts (以……为荣) four dancers, a gymnast, two bakers, a
boxing expert, six singers, and five artists, among others.
Every day my teacher asked if I’d decided what to do. And every day I reminded her that I had no talent.
“Nonsense, Benjamin,” she would say. “You’ll think of something.” “I’ll just have to be sick the day of the show,” I
announced to my friends one afternoon. “If you get a cold, be sure to cough on me.”
“You must have a talent,” said Kate to me. “Let’s make a list. What are you good at?” “Eating,” I answered.
“Watching TV.” Kate rolled her eyes and said, “Benjamin, be serious!” Kate looked at our friends. “Come on, guys.
What are Benjamin’s talents?”
“He’s good with dogs,” said Olivia. “My dog adores him.” She was telling the truth, I supposed, for I could
sit on the stage while her dog licked my face. I was Benjamin Belinski, Human Dog Toy!
“Benjamin’s funny when he’s joking,” said Tommy. He turned to me. “You could do a comedy routine.”
True, as every joke could be about how I had no talents. So I joked myself as Benjamin Belinski, Human Talent
Void!
“Benjamin,” said Kate, “maybe you don’t know how to juggle (杂耍), but your birthday parties are the best.”
Yeah, “ agreed Olivia,” and you always get us together to do stuff. Like having game nights or riding bikes after
school — or when we held that yard sale. The week you had the flu, we didn’t do anything fun. “You’re like the
glue holding us together,” added Tommy.” Oh, great, I joked. “Benjamin Belinski, Human Glue Gun!”

On a bitterly cold January morning in Alexandria, Minnesota, the temperatures had dropped dangerously
below freezing point, and biting winds made conditions even worse. Overnight, a thick blanket of snow had quietly
covered the town, streets were deserted, and a sharp silence hung in the air. People stayed indoors, enjoying hot
drinks and keeping their fireplaces burning brightly, cautious of the bitter cold that threatened frostbite and
hypothermia (失温).
The town was quiet as people remained indoors. However, Eleanor, an 83-year-old lady who lived alone,
worried the birds would go hungry in this freezing weather. As she struggled through deep snow, her boots had
suddenly slipped on hidden ice beneath, causing her to fall. Unable to rise with wet gloves and numb ( 麻木的)
fingers, she had been stuck in the snow. Unfortunately, she could turn to nobody for help.
Originally, Eric Nelson had no intention of stepping outside that morning. He stood at his kitchen window,
briefly observing the frozen landscape and rubbing (搓) his hands together to stay warm. However, as he thought
about the possibility of frozen water pipes — an inconvenience that could make the already unbearable cold worse
— he decided to step out quickly and inspect them.
As Eric opened his front door, an icy wind struck his face, nearly taking his breath away. To his surprise, he
noticed his elderly neighbor Eleanor’s small dog, Maya, was already standing anxiously on his doorstep, shaking
slightly but barking insistently. She moved her feet anxiously as her breath formed small white clouds in the cold
air. Snow stuck to her fur, suggesting she had been outside for longer than was safe in such extreme temperatures.
Eric instantly sensed something was seriously wrong. Eleanor rarely went outside, especially in such
extreme weather. Feeling increasingly uneasy, he quickly followed the anxious dog as she dashed urgently toward
Eleanor’s backyard. When he arrived, his heart sank. Eleanor lay helplessly on the snow-covered ground near a bird
feeder, pale-faced and shaking uncontrollably.

Lucy touched the tiny gray whiskers ( 胡须) on a plastic mouse and her fingers were trembling with
excitement. “Ms. Thompson will think it’s real!” she whispered to Mia, recalling how their art teacher had nearly
dropped her coffee last month when a mouse ran across the schoolyard.
Mia adjusted a mouse’s tail, saying, “But, what if she gets too scared?”
“Relax!” said Lucy. “It’s for April Fools’ Day! She laughed when we drew cat ears on her hat last week. This
is just funnier!”
On April Fools’ Day, Lucy and Mia carefully placed some plastic mice under Ms. Thompson’ s sketchbook
(素描册) in the art room before Ms. Thompson entered for a class. The girls were looking forward to witnessing
the funny moment when Ms. Thompson saw the surprise. Soon Ms. Thompson stepped into the art room and
greeted the students cheerfully. The two girls got excited and their eyes kept track of Ms. Thompson until she
reached out for her sketchbook. The two girls looked at each other, waiting to together shout out “April Fools!”.
The scream filled the art room the moment Ms. Thompson spotted the plastic mice. Before the girls shouted,
they saw Ms. Thompson standing frozen with a pale face. Other students burst into laughter but soon kept silent
when they noticed their teacher’s shaking hands. A boy student rushed to pick up the plastic mice and throw them
away.
Lucy’s stomach dropped. That wasn’t the playful reaction they’d expected. Ms. Thompson kept cleaning her
glasses nervously and her cheerful voice was reduced to whispers. When Ms. Thompson dismissed the class early,
leaving her sketchbook open, Lucy and Mia exchanged guilty glances (瞥).
During lunch break, Mia and Lucy had a talk. “We went too far,” Mia said. Lucy nodded with guilt. “We

When I started my high school journey in an unfamiliar town, everything felt strange, from the sounds on the
streets to the color of the sky. Loneliness was my constant companion, a reality that pained me deeply. I was
floating in a sea of anxiety, lack of companionship.
Then, Emily entered my world. Our familiarity blossomed during my second week, perhaps because we sat
close or had a shared task. I can’t remember how it began, but it changed everything. Emily’s warmth, humor, and
approachability were a breath of fresh air. For the first time, I sensed a possibility of belonging.
However, the arrival of Jane, a girl in a wheelchair, broke my newfound balance. I first encountered her in
class, who sat beside Emily, occupying my usual seat. Jane didn’t notice me, and I had to find another seat. It
happened again and again, and I started to feel anxious. I told myself she was doing it on purpose, trying to push
me out and take Emily away. But there’s a thing I had to admit that she always knew how to make people laugh.
I began to hate Jane. She seemed so comfortable and confident, making me feel small. I was upset that Emily
didn’t notice my unease, and I felt like I was fighting to hold onto the only thing I had. I felt powerless, like I was
standing on a shaky edge.
But then, Jane and I started talking. At first, it was just small talk during group discussions or quick hellos.
She’d ask questions that bothered me, and I’d answer shortly, trying to end the conversation. But she’d let my
words hang, waiting for me to fill the silence, and sometimes I did.
Gradually, our conversations became less unfriendly. Jane’s sharp wit and ability to command a room with
her laughter started to grow on me. I found myself laughing along with the group, even when I tried to resist.
