It was a cool autumn morning when the school announced the annual sports day. For most students, it was a
day of excitement and joy, but for me, it was just another event I wanted to avoid. I had always been the type to shy
away from group activities, preferring the company of my books and thoughts.
Our class monitor, Sarah, noticed my unwillingness. She was the very image of enthusiasm and leadership,
always trying to bring the class together. One day, she approached me during lunch. “Why don’t you join us for the
relay race? It’ll be fun,” she said with a warm smile. I hesitated, but her persistence was hard to ignore.
The next day, Sarah organized a practice session. I unwillingly joined, feeling out of place among my more
athletic classmates. As we ran, I tripped and fell, scraping (擦伤) my knee. Embarrassed, I wanted to quit, but Sarah
was there in an instant, offering a hand and words of encouragement. “It’s okay, we’re a team,” she said. At this
time, other fellow classmates came to encourage me. Their kindness made me feel less alone.
As the days went by, I found myself looking forward to the practices. The care and support among my
classmates was infectious. I began to see the value of teamwork and the joy of shared experiences. My initial
unwillingness melted away, replaced by a newfound sense of belonging.
The anticipation for the sports day filled me with excitement. I dream of the cheers, the applauding crowd,
and the thrill of competition. Training hard, I longed to showcase my skills, push my limits, share and feel the joy
of victory. This event was more than a game; it means a lot for me. I could not wait to be part of it!

I am driving on Highway 75 west of Atlanta. My wife Carolyn and I (both sixty-eight) are on our way to
check out Tellico Village, a retirement community south of Knoxville. I am worried. I’m fine with our plans to
move from our home in Florida. That’s not the problem. The problem is that we booked two nights in a private
home through one of those Internet home-sharing services.
When Carolyn first mentioned the idea a month ago, I questioned why we couldn’t just stay at a motel like
usual. She explained that this place was located right in Tellico Village, and we’d be staying with someone who
could give us an insider’s view. I expressed concern about staying with a stranger, but Carolyn assured me our host
Jo Ann had great reviews. I tried arguing about cost, but she countered that this was actually cheaper. When she
suggested it would be nice to try something different, I diplomatically chose not to respond, knowing I’d already
lost the argument.
Our GPS leads us more efficiently than I would have liked to the front door of our host’s home. If I could
drag my feet outside the car to slow us down, I would. But here we are in a neighborhood of beautiful homes. Jo
Ann has a lovely single-story house, well landscaped and with two large white rocking chairs waiting on a porch
(门廊) decorated with flowers. The house is dark inside. It is 4: 00 p. m., the exact time we said we would arrive.
“So where is she?” I ask. I have a hint of “I told you so” in my voice. “Didn’t she confirm our arrival time?”
“Yes,” says Carolyn. She rings the doorbell. No answer.

As the sun rose on a seemingly ordinary day, 12-year-old Jake bid farewell to his mother, got on the bus and
embarked on his journey to school.
Then the bus came to a stop, picking up Christel, a 56-year-old woman from the next stop, smelling funky
and looking dirty and wet. Some passengers frowned at her, but she was least bothered about them. Moments later,
she wobbled (摇晃) toward an empty seat, just two seats away from Jake.
“Tickets, please?!” said the conductor to the new passengers on the bus.
The conductor gave away tickets and collected money from the passengers until he finally reached Christel’s
seat. “Hurry up... What are you digging in your bag, lady? Make it quick. $3, hurry up...”
Christel’s face slowly started to flush red. “One second, I’m looking for my purse,” she replied.
“Make it fast, lady!”
“I... uh... I don’t have money. I forgot to bring my purse,” Christel stammered (结巴), embarrassed. “I’ll just
get down at the next stop.”
“YOU DON’T HAVE MONEY FOR THE TICKET?” yelled the conductor as the crowd of passengers
turned toward Christel all at once. “Lady, this is not a charity ride that picks up beggars for free. I’m stopping the
bus right now. Get out!”
Christel was surprised. She had never met anybody before who was so rude and unkind to her, let alone in
public.
Jake witnessed everything and was disappointed at how the conductor treated the poor woman. Then he
remembered he still had some change. “HEY, WATCH YOUR WORDS, CONDUCTOR! And hey there! Your
ticket is on me!” yelled Jake.
As the bus continued on its journey, Jake and Christel struck up a conversation. “I wanted to go to a private
school where they have a nice baseball park. But my current school cannot afford such facilities,” revealed Jake.
“So you want to be a baseball player? That’s cool,” Christel said, curious.
“Yes! But I don’t want to trouble my mom. She’s already working hard in the restaurant to raise my sister
and me. I’m grateful that she can still send me to school.”
As the bus arrived at its destination, the two parted ways. Christel stared a second time at his school,
watching him disappear inside the gate. “I’ll come back for you, Jake!” she said and kept her word the next week
when she paid the school a surprise visit in her expensive car.

Our ten-year-old son, Eric, was a happy but hyperactive (多动症) child. Although he was quite bright and
had a warm spirit with a bright smile lighting up his face, he had learning difficulties in focusing on reading and
writing. He struggled with understanding instructions or remembering new information, causing him to fall behind
in class. The psychologist did the tests that showed he liked animals, so we took in two rabbits, hoping that caring
for them would improve his condition.
One Sunday morning, a warm little hand urgently patted my cheek. “Mom, wake up! There’s a big storm. We
have to bring in Bucket and Captain!” Instinctively, I reached for my husband, Larry, but he was on a business trip.
I turned on the light. Eric leaped up on the bed to peek through the curtains. The window was covered with
driving snow. “Let’s go, Mom. We have to save them!”
We stuffed ourselves into some winter clothes and hurried to the yard. Eric went charging out into the snow-
filled darkness to the rabbit hutches. “You get Captain,” he shouted through the howling wind, already holding
Bucket, a white male rabbit, back to the house. I dragged Captain from the cage into the room and surprisingly
found that Eric was busy preparing something. His face was serious and focused without noticing that the rabbit
was eating the telephone cord (电话线).
Soon, the rabbits bounced around playfully, feeding on fresh vegetables. Eric took a moment to observe their
behaviors and gently touched their fur, whispering southing words of comfort. He also got the rabbits to rest in a
nest made of towels and blankets in front of the fireplace and even read them his favorite books. Time seemed to
have stood still.
Larry returned ahead of time, “What is going on here?”, staring at Eric. “I got worried when I couldn’t reach
you, so I caught an earlier flight,” he explained. “Did you know the phone is out of order?”

Flora liked nothing better than to spend time with her grandfather. You see, he was always making something
and she enjoyed watching, learning, and sometimes even helping him finish whatever he was doing. Now, the two
decided to go on a hike in the woods tomorrow.
The next morning, Flora did not need an alarm to wake her. She was up, dressed, and ready to go as the sun
rose and the day began. After a great breakfast and a long drive, Flora and her grandfather arrived at the base of a
mountain and the beginning of the trail. “This is beautiful, ” Flora said. “Just where are we hiking? ” “To the very
top of the mountain where we will have lunch, rest, maybe take a swim, and then hike back down, ” he replied.
“Swim! ” Flora said excitedly. “Is there a lake on the top of the mountain? ” “Yes, ” her grandfather replied. “There
is a lake surrounded by big flat rocks and it is filled with clear, cold water. ” “Wow! ” was all Flora could say.
As they hiked up the mountain, Flora asked many, many questions. “What kind of tree is that? ” “How high
are we? ” “Are there bears around here? ” “Are there any other people up here? ” “What do we do if we get lost? ”
And of course: “Are we there yet? ” Her grandfather answered all her questions the best he could and explained
that they were in a very natural area. Not many people, all sorts of wildlife, even bears. He helped her understand
and respect the natural beauty around them, particularly the animals. He taught her how to use a compass, and
things to help them be safer while they hiked. Like whistle a song or make some noise to let the bigger animals
know you are in their area. In a soft voice, her grandfather said, “The Earth is our mother. All life is sacred; treat all
life with respect. Take from the Earth what is needed and nothing more. Enjoy your journey but leave no tracks.

37-year-old Casey Ryan felt very comfortable in the mountains of the Willamette National Forest in Eugene,
Oregon. He knew its roads and hiking trails well from his time as a volunteer in a roadside clean-up crew. These
days, he was often there photographing wildlife, and he almost always had his lightweight drone (无人机)with him.
It was one of his favorite cameras.
Though weather conditions weren’t great that morning, Ryan decided to go on a short hike with his friend.
Snow was common and Ryan felt he knew the area well enough. Still, as they drove along, the roads became icy.
Ryan thought he might turn back, but after a truck passed them coming from the opposite direction, he felt safe
enough to keep going. The roads must still be passable in that direction, he reasoned.
But it wasn’t long before the two men came across a woman who was stranded(滞留) along the mountain
road. Ryan and his friend stopped to help her. Ryan tried to line up his truck’s rope to pull the woman’s car out —
and ended up stuck in the same place.
The three tried for hours to dig the cars out, but the sun was setting fast. The temperature was dropping and
the snow was turning to ice blocks around the tires. It was impossible to dig out.
Thirty miles from the closest town, their phones had no signal in such a low-lying(低洼的)area. Their car
radio and walkie-talkies couldn’t transmit any signal far enough. The three travelers prepared to spend the night in
their cars. The hikers had survival gear(装备) and food to share, so they weren’t terribly worried.
It was Ryan’s friend who, jokingly perhaps, brought up a news report he had seen about a man using a drone
to send roses to his girlfriend living on the 10th floor to make a proposal (求婚).

It was a sunny afternoon in June of 2023 when Anthony Perry stepped off the train at Chicago’s 69th Street
station. The 30-year-old, a former railway worker, was on his way home.
On the platform, two men were throwing punches (拳). Then the unthinkable happened: The pair tumbled over
the edge and onto the tracks. One man ended up on his back, resisting the beat.Suddenly,he was unresponsive and
lay there unconscious. In panic, the other man rushed backward, jumped back up onto the platform and
disappeared.
“Help him!” an old woman wailed. “Please, someone!”
Perry couldn’t just stand there and watch. He sprang into action. He knew that every second counted. With a
firm determination, he jumped onto the tracks. The other people on the platform watched nervously as Perry
carefully made his way to the victim.
Perry examined the man’s body. He looked dead, but luckily he was still breathing, though weakly. What
mattered most was to move the man to a safe place at once. The train he’d just gotten off was still stopping,
thankfully. But had the train driver seen him? Would it start up again?
Perry silently prayed in his heart: “God help me get him out of here.” He picked the man up on his back and
took a few steps forward.
“Be careful.” cried the warm-hearted old woman.
Perry forced a smile, steadied himself and moved more cautiously to the platform.
With all his strength, he carried the man to the edge of the tracks. The other people around made a
concentrated effort to pull the man to the platform.
Suddenly, the whistle sounded that the train was about to start again. Shock! Perry was still there. People all
around quickly offered the hands to pull him up. Luckily, they made it!

In a remote and small mountain town, there lived a young woman named Lily. She was known for her kind
heart and gentle nature. The townsfolk adored her very much and often sought her out for advice or a listening ear.
Lily always showed her best passion in helping them, which made people in the town think highly of her.
One sunny afternoon, as Lily was walking through the town square, she noticed a small, shabby-looking man
sitting alone on a park bench. His seemingly decent clothes were worn out, and his face bore the marks of a hard
life, appearing helpless and being in low spirits. Feeling obliged to help, Lily approached him with a warm smile.
“Hello there, sir,” she greeted kindly. “Is there anything I can do for you?”
The man looked up, surprise flickering (闪烁) in his weary eyes. “I...I’ve lost my way,” he replied hesitantly.
“I don’t have a home. I haven’t had anything to eat for several days, and I have no idea who I can turn to for help.”
Upon knowing his hardships, Lily decided to offer him some food and a place to stay. She introduced him to
her family, who welcomed him with open arms and invited him to have dinner and stay with them. The man, who
introduced himself as Samuel, began to regain his strength after gracefully filing himself with the delicious food
provided by the warmhearted family. He expressed his sincere gratitude to them for the food and accommodation.
Months passed, and Samuel settled into a routine and became part of their household. He became skilled at
various tasks and his genuine gratitude endeared him to everyone. He shared stories of his past adventures, in
which he even had a narrow escape, and the family were surprised at his experience and admired his courage as
well as wisdom.
One evening, as Lily and Samuels at on the porch, watching the sunset behind the hills, Samuel turned to her
with a glimmer in his eye. “Lily,” he said softly, “I have a secret to share with you.”
