“Mom, please,” Ann a begged eagerly. “Please, let me do it by myself!” She had never made cookies by
herself before, but at the age of nine, she felt capable of handling many things. Her friends had been baking
cupcakes for a year. Yet, it seemed her parents had little faith in her.
“Anna is going to make cookies? Alone?” her brother, Carl, asked with a laugh. “That is going to be
disaster!” Carl used big words to act smarter than Anna. Having a big brother could be annoying. Admittedly, Anna
always appeared clumsy. But that was before she turned nine. She thought her parents should realize she would do
better now.
At her words, a flash of uncertainty crossed her parents’ faces. Would they agree? Holding her breath, she
had waited for what seemed like ages. Surprisingly, Mom nodded, saying, “Okay, but please be careful, and
remember to take a look at the cookbook first.”
Fueled by determination, Anna raced to the kitchen. With each step, there was a sense of purpose and
confidence growing within her. She had already done it with Mom a million times before. Putting the cookbook
aside, she got down to baking cookies from memory, breaking eggs, dropping a cold stick of butter, adding salt and
then…um…yes, mixing it well! Using a mixer was easy. She turned on the mixer at the medium speed—and whoa.
Whoa. Whoa! Butter splattered (飞溅) everywhere, making the kitchen in a mess. Collecting herself, she turned
back to the mixing bowl and started again. This time with softer butter.
Anna placed rounded spoonfuls of mixture onto the cookie pan and put it into the oven (烤炉). Within a few
minutes, a fantastic smell filled the kitchen- the smell of cookie success! She was going to silence all those doubts.
No more eye-rolling from her big brother. No more “You’re too young, Anna” from her parents. She believed she
was grown up and mature enough to be relied on.

【答案】Paragraph 1:
The moment Anna pulled the pan out of the oven, Carl stepped into the kitchen. There was a smug grin on
his face. “Well, well, well, Anna, it seems your cooking adventure ended in disaster, just as I predicted,” he teased
his to me dripping with superiority. Anna’s heart sank as she surveyed the misshapen, burnt cookies on the tray. She
had underestimated the importance of measuring ingredients accurately, resulting in an unappetizing mess. Carl’s
mocking laughter echoed in her ears, fueling her frustration and disappointment. She knew her failure resulted from
her ignoring the cookbook.
Paragraph 2:
Now she decided to have another try, carefully following the cookbook. Determined to redeem herself, Anna
carefully measured each ingredient, ensuring precision in every step of the process and taking care to avoid the
mistakes of her previous attempt. After twenty minutes, Anna opened the oven door to reveal perfectly golden-
brown cookies. Her parents’ eyes were filled with pride and admiration. Even Carl couldn’t hide his astonishment.
In that moment, Ann a realized success wasn’t just about baking perfect cookies; it was about believing in herself
and being meticulous in everything she does.

Born into a medical family, Amar, a 15-year-old boy, was expected to be a doctor, but deep down in his heart,
he was eager to take up writing as his future career. He was in a great dilemma whether to pursue his dream or live
up to his parents’ expectation. until one day when his father gifted him a parrot.
The parrot had two hazy lines in her neck: black and red. Amar knew the hazy lines mark the stage of learning.
“When there is a good teacher, how can his student be stupid” ,he used to believe. It was absolutely true.
Metto’s cage was yellow with a big door and a shiny silver rod (杆) running through the centre. Metto’s world
was fantastic, surrounded by eight-foot white walls with some plum trees. And a lawn, with a palm tree in the
middle, was dotted with multiple-color roses.
Back home from school every afternoon, Amar always slid the door of the cage up for Metto to set her free
nearby the palm tree. Metto could set herself free because she learned how to slide up the door but she had never
tried to do so. It was either love with Amar or, might be, she had never tasted the taste of a bigger world.
Amar always talked with Metto in Pashto (普什图语). Whenever Amar fished out peanuts from his pocket,
Metto talked frequently “Toti choori khore” —parrot! Wanna eat choori. She had learned one more sentence after
meeting with a friend belonging to jungle outside the white walls. She always said that at the end of meal “Da
wakht bam teer she”—this shall to be passed, which Amar had never taught her.
Amar saw her friend coming daily and sitting in the plum tree nearby Metto’s cage. He let them and did
nothing. “The new one can never succeed in winning her. After all, I feed her well. She will never leave me”, Amar
murmured. But he didn’t know the new teacher had taught her something the old one hadn’t. It was the outer world
with untouchable horizon.

【答案】One day, on the way to feed her, Amar was shocked at what Metto was doing. She slid up the door of the
cage, stepped out and settled on the palm trees beside her jungle friend. Amar’s heart sank. He dashed toward them,
reaching his hands out to attract Metto back. He called in anxiety, “Come back! Metto, back!” To his
disappointment, Metto didn’t fly back on his arm as usual, but instead, took wing and flew away with her friend.
Without hesitation, Amar chased them with all his strength but in vain. They finally disappeared in the woods.
Realising he lost Metto forever, Amar stood still, looking blankly into the sky for long.
His head hanging down, Amar came back home after a long running. His heart still hurt. “If only I had locked
the cage!” Amar thought to himself. Suddenly, he remembered Metto’s words “Da wakht bam teer she”— this shall
to be passed. Strangely it eased his grief a bit. He began to realize Metto had taught him something important —
the art of prioritizing things. “At last, he prioritized freedom over comfort.” He thought of his own life too. Then
Amar decided to prioritize his dream and tell his parents.

When we are little kids, birthday parties are momentous occasions. They are our time to shine, and we love
everything about them: the balloons, the games, the cake, the gifts, and so on.
After reading cool stories about police officers solving mysteries, Allen Miller thought the police were
awesome, hoping to become one of them! So, when he had to choose a theme for his seventh birthday party—he
went with his favorite: the police! And all he wanted for his birthday party was a model police car. He excitedly
invited some of his friends and anxiously awaited the day. Unfortunately, none of them could make it to the party
due to various reasons,
Allen’s mom Rachel wrestled with the challenging decision: should she cancel the party and save Allen the
embarrassment of an empty party room? He had been looking forward to the party and talking about it daily, so it
would break his heart to cancel it.
Officer Frank Smith, who had already planned with Rachel and agreed to show up at the party, heard from
Rachel that it might be canceled due to low attendance. That’s when he decided to save the day—he is a police
officer after all! His duty is to serve and protect, and he decided to protect Allen from having a bad day, and serve
him the most amazing seventh birthday party! Officer Smith got the whole local police to join in. “We like to be
involved in our community. It’s not just about enforcing (执行) the law. We like to be there in the good times as
well,” he explained to Rachel.
On the day of Allen’s party, Officer Smith picked up Rachel and Allen in his police car. The boy didn’t know
where they were going, but was excited. They stopped at Town Hall, and officer Smith led them into the meeting
room where a group of policemen were waiting to wish Allen a happy birthday.

【答案】There, a party was waiting for him. The moment Allen stepped inside, a chorus of “Happy Birthday”
filled the meeting room, and he found himself surrounded by lots of police officers holding balloons. Officer Smith
introduced him to all the officers, who gave him high fives. Allen was thrilled, and his eyes sparkled with
excitement as he looked at the grand police-themed cake. As Allen cut into the cake with the help of his mom, the
room erupted into cheers and laughter, adding to the joyful atmosphere.
After they enjoyed the cake, officer Smith took out a gift bag. “It’s for you.” He presented the delicately
wrapped parcel to Allen, who was stunned by the surprise. “Wow, a model police car! It looks exactly like the one
we came here in! Thank you!” Officer Smith smiled, “Anytime, Allen.” Allen hugged Officer Smith and thanked
him again for making the otherwise crushing disappointment his time to shine. It was the local heroes who helped
by being part of the community and inspiring the young soul in small but effective ways.

My Best Examination
One day, while at work in a coal-mine in Malden, I happened to overhear two miners talking about a great
school for poor people in Virginia. It was Hampton Institute. The school was established to provide opportunities
for poor but worthy students who could work out all or a part of the cost of board, and at the same time be taught
some trade or industry.
I was on fire constantly with one ambition, and that was to go to school. I decided at once to go to that
school. Finally the great day came and I started for Hampton. I had only a small, cheap bag that contained what few
articles of clothing I could get. The distance from Malden to Hampton is about five hundred miles. I had not been
away from home many hours before it began to grow painfully evident that I did not have enough money to pay my
fare (路费) to Hampton.
By walking and begging rides in some way, I finally reached the grounds of the Hampton Institute after a
number of days, tired and dirty. As soon as possible after reaching, I presented myself before the head teacher for
assignment to a class. Having been so long without proper food, a bath, and change of clothing, I was like a
worthless loafer (游荡者).
I did not, of course, make a very favourable impression upon her, and I could see at once that there were
doubts in her mind about the wisdom of admitting me as a student. I tried to impress her in all the ways I could with
my worthiness. How I wished that I could get a chance to show what was in me.
After some time, the head teacher said to me, “The adjoining (隔壁的) classroom needs sweeping. Take the
broom and sweep it.”

【答案】范文
It occurred to me at once that here was my chance. Never did I receive an order with more delight. I knew I
could sweep, for my parents thoroughly taught me how to do that when I was young. I swept the room three times.
Then I got a dusting-cloth and I dusted it four times. All the woodwork around the walls, every bench, table and
desk, I went over four times with my dusting-cloth, I had the feeling that in a large measure my future depended
upon the impression I made upon the teacher in the cleaning of that room. When I was through, I reported to her.
The head teacher went into the room and inspected the floor and closets. Then she took her handkerchief and
rubbed it on the woodwork about the walls, and over the table and benches. When she was unable to find one bit of
dirt on the floor, or a particle of dust on any of the furniture, she quietly remarked, “I guess you will do to enter this
institution.” I was one of the happiest souls on earth. The sweeping of that room was my college examination! I
have passed several examinations since then, but I have always felt that this was the best one I had ever passed.

Whenever I spread marmalade ( 橘子酱), I am reminded of my mother, a five-foot-tall angel who even
befriended a skunk (臭鼬).
One day, while she was busy picking beans in the backyard, she came across a skunk no more than a meter
away. The skunk’s embarrassment was evident as he had undoubtedly been rummaging (乱翻) through the garbage.
He still had a marmalade jar stuck on his nose. Mom took pity on him. Instead of worrying the creature would
spray something smelly all over her and the beans, she smiled compassionately at the little thing and extended a
helping hand. Kneeling on the ground, she inched across the grass, reached out, and twisted the jar—very carefully.
The jar slipped off. The skunk nodded a thank-you before slipping away into the woods at the back of the
garden. Obviously, there was no spraying incident, thanks to my remarkable mother. She repeated this tale
numerous times, always calling the skunk Marmalade. However, that was not the end of the story. Three summers
later, when I was about twelve, another encounter occurred.
It was a rainy morning, and both my mother and father had gone to work. My friend Rob came over to play,
and we decided to run the electric train in my room. Suddenly, a scratching sound emerged from the attic ( 阁楼).
Rob assumed that it might be some kind of animal. Curiosity got the better of us, and we ventured towards the
source of the sound.
I cautiously opened the attic door in the hall. The noise ceased abruptly. I climbed up the stairs, Rob
following my lead. There behind the toy box near the chimney stood the animal—black with a distinct white stripe
down his back. Was he scared and trembling? I believe so, at least that’s what I remember. Instinctively, I retreated,
fearing the potential spray or bites from the creature. “Hey, Rob,” I whispered urgently, “It’s a skunk. Let’s go to
the kitchen and figure out a way to get him out of here.”

【答案】范文
Paragraph 1: In the cupboard, several paper cups and a jar of marmalade caught our sight. I reached for the
jar, remembering my mother’s encounter with the skunk years ago. Could it be that this was indeed Marmalade,
returning to our home in search of a familiar treat? Hurriedly, I dumped a teaspoon of marmalade into each paper
cup, hoping to lure the skunk out of the attic. Hearts pounding in anticipation, we set one cup on the back porch,
one just inside the back door, and one every few feet all the way up to the attic. The skunk seemed intrigued, slowly
creeping towards the first cup. His nose twitched, and then he began to lick the sweet treat.
Paragraph 2: Rob and I followed the skunk as he ate his way down the stairs. He seemed to have grown
accustomed to our presence, no longer trembling, and even appeared to enjoy the treat. As he finished gobbling the
last bit of the marmalade, he turned and looked at us, those big brown eyes seemingly showing his gratitude.
Without another scratch or sign of aggression, he turned and gracefully made his way out of the house,
disappearing into the rainy morning. We stood there, amazed and in complete awe of the remarkable encounter.
Later, when I shared the story with my mother, she smiled and nodded, saying, “Yes, that’s Marmalade. He always
knows where to find a warm heart and a jar of marmalade.”

Kevin woke to the blaring beep of his alarm clock. “Can’t wait for that camping trip,” Kevin thought, filled
with excitement. As he was leaving home, his dad grabbed him by the hand and said, “Before you go, just tell me
the directions on where you and your friends are going to stay.”
“But dad!” Kevin complained.
“No buts!” Kevin’s dad added.
“Fine.” Kevin told him the directions and left.
The three friends, Kevin, Jay and Nathan, had been planning this adventure for weeks, packing their stuff-
tents, snacks, and a map-preparing for a 3-day outdoor exploration. Excitement ran through Kevin as they departed
for their campsite. “This trip is going to be awesome, ” Nathan excitedly yelled as they set off. But little did they
know that nature had a surprise in store for them.
The first day at the campsite was going great, setting up tents, collecting firewood, and sharing stories.
“Man, we nailed these tents, ” Kevin said. “I know it was easy really,” Nathan replied. The friends were happy.
Yet towards night, as the dark clouds gathered overhead, the atmosphere shifted, and a sudden storm erupted
with unforgiving anger. Rain poured down from the heavens like a relentless waterfall, transforming the peaceful
campsite into a muddy battleground. Worse still, a huge tree was uprooted and crashed down with a deafening
crack on their only means of escape - their car. Kevin’s eyes widened in horror as he spotted the damaged wreckage
beneath the fallen giant. “Our car!” he screamed over the howling wind, his voice a mix of disbelief and despair.
“We’re stuck here,” he declared, his words barely audible against the backdrop of thunder and raindrops. They
realized that their plans had been violently spoiled by forces beyond their control. The once quiet campsite now
stood as a deserted battlefield, the fallen tree serving as a painful reminder of the unpredictable nature of the world
around them.

for water soon drained their energy. They were about to give up when they heard a small sound, a splash of some
sort. They ran as fast as they could and found a small stream-a lifeline in all the challenges. However, with time
passing by, more challenges emerged -limited food, frightful night filled with wilderness sounds, and the
uncertainty of survival in the wild. Their nerves were near the edge of breaking down after long hours of
uncertainty in the wilderness.
Paragraph 2: On the third night, a distant engine sound broke the terrible stillness. Relief washed over the
weary faces as they witnessed the approach of a rugged vehicle. Kevin’s dad stepped out to meet the group. The
emotions that played across their faces - disbelief, gratitude, and overwhelming joy- mirrored the shared trouble

that would undoubtedly delight her Grammy, who frequently used the expression to praise their festive decorations.
“Well, that looks dynamite!” Grammy would exclaim, her approval filling Kendra with warmth.
Just as Kendra was signing the cards, her mother came in, sharing the sad news of Elise, their neighbor, and
her recent accident that led to a broken leg, restricting her to home schooling for the coming weeks. Kendra felt
sorry for Elise, and quickly picked the most splendid valentine, hurrying to Elise’s home.
Upon arrival, Kendra’s look fell upon the life-sized deer statue decorating the front yard. She studied it, saying
to herself, “Wouldn’t this deer look cool with a big heart around his neck? Elise could look out of the window and
see it decorated for Valentine’s day.”
With this idea, Kendra got the sizable red heart her Grammy had given her, tied it with string, and hung it
around the statue’s neck like a festive chain. The next day, she decorated the antlers (鹿角) with a variety of smaller
hearts. It was during this act of kindness that Colin and Amy, Elise’s fellow classmates, happened upon the scene.
“Are you decorating Elise’s deer for Valentine’s Day?” they asked. Kendra confirmed with a nod, explaining her
intention to cheer up Elise. Despite her uncertainty about what to add next, Colin proposed adding some color,
while Amy suggested putting decorations on the deer’s back and forehead. United by a shared purpose, they agreed
to meet later.

That afternoon, they met to decorate the deer with the materials they had sourced. Colin, with his artistic
touch, laid the red blanket over the deer’s back, giving it a festive look. Meanwhile, Kendra, feeling a spark of
creativity, carefully placed sparkly heart-shaped stickers upon the deer’s forehead, adding a bit of fun. “That looks
so cute!” Amy exclaimed. Then, they decided to create a sign. With Amy’s paper and markers, they crafted a
colorful banner that read, “Happy Valentine’s Day, Elise!” The sight of their collective effort made Kendra beam
with pride, echoing her Grammy’s words, “That looks dynamite!”
Just then, Elise’s front door opened, and Elise stuck her head out. Her eyes widened in surprise, taking in the
sight of the festively decorated deer and her friends. “You did this for me? Wow! Thank you!” she grinned. Kendra
felt a rush of happiness as Elise’s appreciation washed over them. “Can I join in next time?” Elise asked eagerly.
“Of course!” Kendra felt featherlight. The “Deer Valentine” not only brought a smile to Elise’s face but also sowed
the seeds of a new friendship and marked a personal milestone in kendra’s journey to openly express her affection
for others.

What should have been a regular Sunday at the YMCA turned into a day one teenage lifeguard will never
forget!
Eighteen-year-old Natalie Lucas has been working as a lifeguard at the YMCA in Longmont, Colorado, for
the past three years. Recently, a couple entered the pool area while she was on duty. The woman was very pregnant,
so Natalie kept a close eye on her as she eased herself into the shallow end of the pool.
Tessa Rider was nine months pregnant that day. She and her husband, Matthew Jones, came to the pool a few
times that week to ease the discomfort of a nerve pain.
As Tessa was resting in the pool, she suddenly realized something was happening. Natalie noticed Tessa
climbed out of the pool, so she went over to check on the couple. “I walk over and Matthew, the husband, says to
me, ‘We’re having the baby right now.’ I’m like, ‘OK!’” Natalie recalled.
Matthew called 911, but as he spoke to the operator he knew it was too late. Tessa was already pulling her
bathing suit off. Natalie helped Tessa and Matthew by bringing over the center’s medical supplies and towels, and
calling for more assistance from the front desk. Throughout it all, she told herself to remain calm and focus on
caring for Tessa.
“I knew I needed to stay calm,” Natalie said. “So I made sure to keep my head on and stay with them, keep
asking them questions, and keep them focused on the baby and made sure that they were the most comfortable.”
Less than five minutes later, Matthew caught his newborn son as he was born on the pool edge.
After helping clear the baby’s airway and ensuring he was breathing, Natalie used her back to support the
new mom until paramedic (护理员) arrived. Once there, baby Tobin Thomas Rider received a clean bill of health!

【答案】One possible version:
Matthew and Tessa are both grateful that Natalie was there to help them. They thought they were in great
need of an extra set of hands at that moment. Matthew said Natalie was super focused on Tessa so that he did not
have to worry about his wife. Without Natalie there, he wouldn’t have been able to give his attention to Tobin. “She
was there to do anything we asked,” said Tessa. “And the first thing I thought of was that someone could hold my
back up. And she did. It was perfect.”
Natalie said Tobin’s unexpected birth was all just part of her job. The teen, who’s getting ready to head off to
college in the fall, says, “I just did what I was supposed to do in that situation. I’m a lifeguard. It was the first time
I’d had to help bring life into the world, rather than just prevent death.” Undoubtedly, the whole experience made
an impression on her and she planned on sending birthday cards to Tobin. Both Natalie and the couple plan to stay
in touch. They’re definitely bonded for life after this unforgettable experience.

Several years ago, I worked as a writing teacher in a rural middle school. I knew all my students. They trusted
me with their stories and so I was given the privilege of having a secret bond with each one of them. I taught my
students about the power of words, and tried to let them find expression through writing. We learned to trust each
other, because we learned how hard it was to write openly and honestly, and we learned sharing your words took
courage. I was always amazed at the words that came from my students’ hearts.
Later, we had a new student to the school, Al. Al was small and looked younger than other students in my
class. He was with us for only a short while and still trying to fit in. So I was a little surprised when he volunteered
to read. I smiled and nodded for him to do, while in my mind I was afraid that the others would make fun of the
new kid after he read. The room fell silent, and Al began to read.
“If I had one wish, it would be to meet my dad...” He started out loud and clear.
He had held the attention of my usually restless students for what seemed like 15 minutes. He told of how he
had never known his father, who had left the family when he was a baby. He shared the intimate details of his
struggles to be the only man in the house at such a young age, of having to mow the lawn and fix broken pipes. He
revealed to us the thoughts that went through his mind constantly about where his father might be and why he
might have left.

【答案】范文
I looked around the classroom, finding no snickers. They all leaned forward in rapt attention. Instead of any
signs of disdain, I witnessed a sea of silent, attentive faces. A few heads were nodding and a glistening of tears
shimmered in the corners of some eyes. Obviously, Al’s words had touched them deeply. Our classroom had
become a safe space for sharing, a testament to the power of empathy and understanding. As their teacher, I felt a
surge of pride. I smiled and nodded at Al, encouraging him to continue.
When Al finished the last sentence, all the class stood up and applauded. The applause echoed through the
classroom, indicating the fitting-in of Al. As their applause subsided, I could see a new light in their eyes forged by
Al’s sharing. Not only did Al’s bravery touch their hearts, but also sowed the seeds of compassion and acceptance
that would continue to grow within our classroom. It was a reminder that in our shared vulnerability and honesty,
we find the truest connections and the deepest truths about ourselves and each other.

A Cheating Incident
Raj looked into the teacher’s stony face as she raised an eyebrow. With his forehead bathed in sweat, he
attempted to hide the book beneath his desk, but in vain. The watchful teacher had already caught sight of his
behavior. She swiftly snatched the book away and ordered him to stand till the time was up, a period that seemed to
stretch endlessly.
To Raj’s regret and disappointment, he had forgotten to study for the important quiz. It was CAI, the crucial
stage of his academic year, and Raj was having his Science paper. He closed his eyes as he tried to recall. Then, it
dawned on him. A week earlier, his Science teacher had clearly informed the class, “Next week, we’ll be having a
quiz focusing on Interactions and Matter. Make sure you study these topics thoroughly.” Raj blamed himself for
letting such vital information slip his mind among the chaos of daily school life.
With the clock ticking, he was briefly glancing through the pages of his textbook, desperately trying to absorb
any last-minute knowledge before the quiz began. However, just as he was doing so, the teacher severely instructed
everyone to pack away everything except their pencil cases. Raj let out a low sigh, despair settling heavily in his
chest.
As the teacher handed out the papers, he felt nervous and his hands grew icy and slick with sweat, showing his
anxiety. Drops of sweat stood out on his forehead as he tried to focus. Thoughts of being a failure ran through his
mind. He moved his body from side to side in his seat as he thought of the notes he had secretly hidden in his pencil
case.
Finally, the teacher announced, “Class, the time is 10: 00 a. m. We will stop at 11: 00a. m. sharp. You may
begin, now.” The noise of flurrying papers was heard as students attentively turned to the first page. Raj rapidly
filled out the multiple-choice section without much consideration, his heart pounding faster with each tick of the
clock.

When he came to the open-ended questions, he sighed desperately from the bottom of his heart. They were his
weak point. Casting secret glances around him, he dishonestly drew out his notes. He unfolded them and began
scanning them. As he was putting them back in, he felt someone tapping his shoulder. Filled with fear, Raj turned
slowly in his seat and stared at the stony face of the teacher. She pointed to the notes hidden in his pencil case and
raised an eyebrow in disbelief. Raj trembled in his seat, too afraid to utter a word, as the teacher took his paper
away.
Once the time was up, the teacher took him to the headmaster’s office. The headmaster gave him a first and
final lecture about cheating. Raj’s face turned red with embarrassment. He was genuinely regretful. Once bitten,
twice shy. He silently promised himself that he would never cheat again. From that day forward, Raj kept his
promise. The cheating incident served as a harsh reminder for him to stay attentive during classes, to respect the
learning process, and to avoid the foolish thoughts of shortcuts.

I was eleven years old. This was my first soccer game. With little knowledge of the rules of the game, I was
nervous and uneasy, but still excited. With kids running at me from all directions, I observed the skills that many of
my teammates possessed. Their motions appeared so suggest hand effortless, while their faces revealed their
attachment to the game. I, however, lacked the spirit of playing aggressively that many of the other kids had.
To my knowledge, this game turned out to be an intense one. My team was falling behind the entire game, but
toward the end, we tied it up. I watched as parents yelled and screamed, find to excitement and emotion. Many of
the parents, with their waving arms and cheerful eyes, seemed more involved in the game than their children.
Suddenly, it was my turn to kick the ball. This was my chance to reveal that J was as good as everyone else. I
brought my leg back and was ready to kick with all my strength. I gave a good, hard kick-one of my better—but
unfortunately, I had kicked the ball in the wrong direction. Seeing the disappointed faces of the members of my
team, I felt my face go from pale white to bright red; I wanted to run home, faster than I ever ran in a soccer
practice.
Over the next few years, I continued to participate in a variety of sports, trying to find the one where I would
be the center of attention for the right reasons. That never happened. Very often my father couldn’t wait to practise
playing soccer around the backyard with me. Each time I somehow managed to trip on a shoelace ( 鞋带) or trip
over a rock. My father continued to push me, and during my elementary-school years it seemed that I might
become quite the athlete. At the same time, my little brother was suddenly not so little and began to control the
family athletic field. His ability and passion for sports made me wonder why I was so different.

Eventually, I understood something all of a sudden. I began to integrate the opponents’ play and team work
into my soccer practice and games. I felt that it was a great moment for me to learn from other better skilled soccer
players. As an old saying goes, experience is the best teacher. I spent my time in working out hard. I was aware that
I had to figure the lessons out on my own. Obviously, I needed to improve myself in a sense. Therefore, I gave a lot
of thought to it.
It suddenly occurred to me what I should do with it next. I knew that my lack of ability for sports was
something that separated me from many people. In that case, I would never give up. I participated to the best of my
ability in whatever I was doing. My father once told me, “Be yourself and you will not be looked down on.”
Keeping it in mind, I became a top soccer player with my strong determination and hard work. I hold the belief that
nothing is difficult if I put my heart into it.

In a remote and small mountain town, there lived a young woman named Lily. She was known for her kind
heart and gentle nature. The townsfolk adored her very much and often sought her out for advice or a listening ear.
Lily always showed her best passion in helping them, which made people in the town think highly of her.
One sunny afternoon, as Lily was walking through the town square, she noticed a small, shabby-looking man
sitting alone on a park bench. His seemingly decent clothes were worn out, and his face bore the marks of a hard
life, appearing helpless and being in low spirits. Feeling obliged to help, Lily approached him with a warm smile.
“Hello there, sir,” she greeted kindly. “Is there anything I can do for you?”
The man looked up, surprise flickering (闪烁) in his weary eyes. “I...I’ve lost my way,” he replied hesitantly.
“I don’t have a home. I haven’t had anything to eat for several days, and I have no idea who I can turn to for help.”
Upon knowing his hardships, Lily decided to offer him some food and a place to stay. She introduced him to
her family, who welcomed him with open arms and invited him to have dinner and stay with them. The man, who
introduced himself as Samuel, began to regain his strength after gracefully filing himself with the delicious food
provided by the warmhearted family. He expressed his sincere gratitude to them for the food and accommodation.
Months passed, and Samuel settled into a routine and became part of their household. He became skilled at
various tasks and his genuine gratitude endeared him to everyone. He shared stories of his past adventures, in which
he even had a narrow escape, and the family were surprised at his experience and admired his courage as well as
wisdom.
One evening, as Lily and Samuels at on the porch, watching the sunset behind the hills, Samuel turned to her
with a glimmer in his eye. “Lily,” he said softly, “I have a secret to share with you.”

【答案】Lily’s curiosity seized her, and she leaned in closer. “What is it, Samuel?” “I may have appeared lost and
homeless when we met,” Samuel said with a smile. Confusion spread across Lily’s face as she listened attentively.
“But I am actually a millionaire,” Samuel continued. “I disguised myself to see if there were still good-hearted
people in the world. And you, Lily, have proved to me that genuine kindness still exists.” Lily was speechless, a
mix of shock and awe washing over her. Ready to reward Lily for her kindness, Samuel ensured that her family
would be blessed with abundance.
True to his word, Samuel lived up to his promise of giving Lily a large sum of money. Lily’s family found
themselves never lacking daily necessities. Instead, they were always enveloped in wealth, but they never forgot the
lesson of kindness that began with the encounter on that park bench. They used their newfound fortune to help
others in need, who also passed on kindness to their neighbors. And so, the small town became known for its
endless kindness, which was forever changed by Samuel who was not what he seemed.
