Passage 1
Next time you’re walking through a park on a hot day, take a moment to sit under a big old tree. You’ll find that
the temperature is something like 2℃ cooler than if you were beneath an umbrella. Why? Because a mature tree
releases a massive amount of water from its leaves, which cools the surrounding air, just like the way sweating
cools our bodies down.
So a single tree influences the microclimate around it — but what about an entire forest? That’s the question
explored in The Power of Trees by German forester Peter Wohlleben. He writes about trees, ecosystems, roots and
the many creatures who live in and among them in a fresh, lively way. He believes forests and trees make decisions
about their survival, protect and look after their young.
For readers, some of this language is familiar, and some may know that this style has been a source of
derision(嘲笑) in the past. However, it’s this down-to-earth, conversational style that makes the book come to life
and makes complex science accessible. He explains processes, such as the way trees access and use sugars at
different times of the year, in simple, everyday terms.
Wohlleben writes in a calm style, but he can’t hide his anger with the way people today — including many
environmentalists — now “think of trees as little more than biological storage units for carbon dioxide either while
they are alive or when they are dead”. This narrow perspective ignores the vast beneficial effects that forests
generate for global temperature management. His claims and criticisms are backed by emerging science and new
research, as well as practical observations of how the presence of forests changes the landscape nearby.
This book is wise and thought-provoking. In his chapter highlighting the role of wolves as top predators( 捕
食者) in preserving the forest, Wohlleben writes: “We can come at protecting forests from whatever direction we
want, but the results are always the same. We must put less pressure on nature by exploiting(开发) it less. We must
strengthen forests by allowing them to take care of themselves.”
1. What does The Power of Trees explore?
A. Temperature management.
B. The loss of water in leaves.
C. Formation of microclimates.
D. The vital role that forests play.
2. Which can describe the language in the book?
A. Complex.
B. Fancy.
C. Approachable.
D. Professional.
3. How does Wohlleben deal with people’s narrow perspective on forests?
A. He treats it lightly.
B. He turns a deaf ear to it.
C. He refers to it selectively.
D. He argues against it convincingly.
4. What does Wohlleben suggest for protecting forests?
A. Fighting climate change.
B. Leaving them alone.
C. Returning farmland to forest.
D. Driving wolves away.
D 2. C 3. D 4. B

Passage 2
The sun was shining, people were paddling in the sea and
dogs were being walked — a typical day on the beautiful Dorset coast. Just a few minutes inland, however, history
was being made. Yesterday, at the National Trust’ s Purbeck Heaths nature reserve, four beavers( 海狸) were
released from cages and crawled into Little Sea, a 33-hectare lake — the first to be legally released in England after
a 400-year disappearance and a fight to return them to the landscape.
The Trust says this is the prime habitat for them to wander free, with no fenced enclosures, full of lakes and
watercourses for the beavers to make their home. The Trust has permission to release 25 on the island but is starting
with four and then making more releases in coming years if this one goes well.
“I feel real hope,” said David Brown, the director at Purbeck. “I’ve worked as an ecologist for 40 years and
this is the most optimistic time in my career without doubt. We are visibly, measurably recovering nature and that is
so exciting!”
Conservationists have been campaigning for the return of the beaver for decades because it is a keystone
species, whose existence allows other creatures to develop well. This is because beavers create complex wetland
habitats by digging channels and pools and constructing leaky dams. Their dams can also deal with pollution,
helping to clean up rivers, and prevent flooding as well as drought.
The Trust has worked with local farmers and landowners to ensure the beavers do not cause unwanted
disruption. Purbeck hopes it will stimulate year-round nature tourism as people come to see the beavers and the
habitats they create. “We have been seeing the economic development shift from bucket-and-spade tourism to
nature tourism, and that is more sustainable,” Brown said.
1. Why is the beavers’ release considered historical?
A. They are the first beavers spotted in the wild.
B. It marks an improvement in lake protection.
C. They are reintroduced to the wild after centuries of absence.
D. It offers a great chance for people to interact with them freely.
2. What does the underlined word “prime” in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Perfect.
B. Temporary.
C. Familiar.
D. Extra.
3. What aspect of the beavers do conservationists highlight?
A. Their impact on the ecosystem.
B. Their capability of constructing dams.
C. Their adaptability to the environment.
D. Their popularity among tourists.
4. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A. The beavers will reach other reserves quickly.
B. Beaver tourism may reshape the local economy.
C. More beavers will be released next summer.
D. Bucket-and-spade tourism is declining sharply.
C 2. A 3. A 4. B

Passage 3
2025 届湖北省多市高三下学期4 月调研考试(三模)A battle broke out at the weekend over a hedge (树篱)
in Lincolnshire. The hedge, near the town of Winterton, was covered in netting by Partner Construction, which has
applied for planning permission to build 40 homes on the site. This is standard practice, the developer said, in order
to prevent birds from nesting in a habitat that might be damaged if building work begins later in the year.
However, a group of local people opposed to the development produced a video showing birds trapped
beneath the nets. Chris Packham shared the video on Twitter. Packham said the nets showed disregard of how to
look after the countryside, and said, if he were there, he would “tear those nets”.
The Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 makes it illegal to intentionally “take, damage or destroy” the nest of
any wild bird while it is in use or being built. In theory, this even bans people from cutting away some of the
branches of their fruit trees if doing so harms a nest that they know is there. Any tree or hedge becomes a protected
site the moment a bird settles in it, which is often the case between February and August—potentially shutting
down an entire construction site for the busy half of the year.
To address the problem, conservationists and builders agree to find a middle ground. Netting an empty tree
or a bush in winter is certainly better than making the birds look for a new site in the middle of the reproduction
season. “Netting is probably the lowest-impact option if a habitat has to be removed during the reproduction
season,” a spokesman for Partner Construction said. “We appointed qualified and experienced ecologists to carry
out the work on our behalf. They have convinced us and provided photographic evidence that there were no birds in
the hedge after it was netted.”
1. What is the standard practice according to paragraph 1?
A. Protecting birds with hedges.
B. Applying for planning permission.
C. Removing hedges from the site.
D. Netting permitted construction sites.
2. What does the underlined word “disregard” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Evidence.
B. Prospect.
C. Ignorance.
D. Inefficiency.
3. What do we know about the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981?
A. It protects wild birds’ nests.
B. It permits proper construction.
C. It guides tree cutting practice.
D. It prioritizes bird nesting seasons.
4. What does the last paragraph mainly talk about?
A. The settlement of the conflict.
B. The influence of the battle.
C. The process of making a deal.
D. The significance of netting a hedge.
D 2. C 3. A 4. A

Passage 1
Large language models (LLMs) seem better at
making people feel seen and heard than humans. This phenomenon, called “LLMpathy”, is both surprising and
controversial. Some argue that computers can’t truly empathize(共情) for lack of emotion. Others are alarmed by
how readily people are trading human connection for digital ones. But beyond these concerns, chatbots might offer
something more practical. If they are beating us at empathy, shouldn’t we try to learn what they are doing, right?
Researchers initially wondered if AI advantage lay in its unlimited attention. But that doesn’t seem to explain
it. A 2024 research in Harvard Business School revealed that people’s expressing of empathy, despite increased
commitments, still fell short compared to those by ChatGPT.
Chatbots’ success may come from avoiding all-too-human mistakes. Chatbots’ responses stood out mainly
because they focused on acknowledging feelings, unlike humans who often shared a seemingly related experience
to offer solutions, unintentionally damaging the hope of being truly heard.
Chatbots avoid these pitfalls. They focus entirely on the speaker. More than humans, chatbots paraphrase,
acknowledge and justify how people might feel. When people adopt similar strategies, their connections strengthen.
It bears noting that the AI advantage in empathetic conversations has limits. Its “paraphrase, acknowledge,
follow up” may feel warm the first time, but dull the second. Most research tests people’s interactions with
Chatbots just once, so AI’s edge might fade in longer, repetitive chats.
Chatbots might be helpful, but they still can’t feel or truly care. The demand for AI therapists (理疗师) may
be growing, but many people still prefer human support. Anyone who has repeated “agent” at a customer-service
robot knows the feeling of desperately wanting a real person on the line. Some of the shortcomings of human
connection are also, in fact, features. But the fact that we often must earn human empathy, and that it comes from
limited beings who devote themselves to being there for us, is part of its beauty.
1. Why does AI often outperform humans at showing empathy?
A. It has unlimited patience.
B. It shares related experience.
C. It focuses on people’s feeings.
D. It prioritizes solving problems.
2. What does the underlined word “pitfalls” in paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Responses.
B. Shortcomings.
C. Experiences.
D. Feelings.
3. What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A. Human care is irreplaceable.
B. In-person chats have limits.
C. Service lines benefit human.
D. Emotion is enhanced by AI.
4. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
A. Chatbots: The New Emotional Support
B. The Double-Edged Sword of Chatbots
C. The Rising Demand for AI Therapists
D. Learn to Be a Listener like Chatbots
C 2. B 3. A 4. D

Passage 2
Artificial intelligence has persuaded a lot
of folks that we need to undertake a comprehensive reform of education. Now that chatbots can speedily access
information and answer complex questions, why bother memorizing historical facts or quotations? Shouldn’t we
instead teach kids to think critically and solve problems and leave the boring duties to computers?
There’s a problem with these arguments: humans require knowledge to think creatively. Outsourcing our
memory and cognition( 认知) to Google and AI risks making us less intelligent and more subject to false
information.
In 2000. American educator E.D. Hirsch noted in his essay: The internet places information at our fingertips,
but using it demands existing knowledge’ stores. This principle drove the UK’s 2014 curriculum reform
empowering multiplication table mastery(乘法口诀表) by age nine — not merely for calculation skills. but to build
the neural frameworks(神经框架) enabling complex reasoning. As former schools minister Nick Gibb stressed:
“Google it’s effectively depends on what’s stored in long-term memory.”
“The suggestion we should outsource our memory to “free up” limited space for more creative thinking is
based on a misconception — we’re likely to overestimate our intelligence, mistaking knowledge found on the
internet for our own,” writes Nicholas Carr in The Shallows. “When we start using the Web as a replacement for
personal memory, bypassing the inner processes of consolidation( 巩固), we risk emptying our minds of their
riches.”
Indeed, looking stuff up on Google often results in us not being able to recall it later — either because our
brains are conditioned to think we don’t need to remember it, or because the internet, mobile phones and social
media distract our attention, or both. If students come to rely on machines not just to recall facts but to think for
them, it might not just be memory that suffers: cognition and creativity could atrophy, too.
The solution lies not in rejecting technology, but in rebalancing its role. The UK’s knowledge-rich
curriculum, despite disagreements, recognizes this truth: human intelligence advances when technology adds to
rather than replaces learning.
1. What is the author’s concern about AI’s influence on education?
A. Students avoid complex questions.
B. Teachers prioritize memorizing facts.
C. Students develop poor analysis and judgment.
D. Teachers ignore students' creativity.
2. What do experts consistently emphasize?
A. The necessity for technology improvement.
B. The importance of knowledge storage.
C. The reduction of internet usage.
D. The replacement of complex reasoning.
3. What does the underlined word “atrophy” in paragraph 5 mean?
A. Decline.
B. Disappear.
C. Strengthen.
D. Stabilize.
4. Which of the following may the author agree?
A. Limit AI to education.
B. Avoid referring to AI in study.
C. Search online for solutions beforehand. D. Use technology as an assistant.

students come to rely on machines not just to recall facts but to think for them, it might not just be memory that
suffers: cognition and creativity could atrophy, too.(如果学生开始不仅依赖机器来回忆事实,还让机器替他们
In 2000. American educator E.D. Hirsch noted in his essay: The internet places
information at our fingertips, but using it demands existing knowledge’ stores.(2000 年,美国教育家E.D.
we start using the Web as a replacement for personal memory, bypassing the inner processes of consolidation (巩
固), we risk emptying our minds of their riches.(当我们开始用网络取代个人记忆,绕过巩固的内在过程时,我
If students come to rely on machines not just to recall facts but to
think for them, it might not just be memory that suffers: cognition and creativity could atrophy, too.(如果学生开始
故选A。
The solution lies not in rejecting technology, but in rebalancing its role. The
UK’s knowledge-rich curriculum, despite disagreements, recognizes this truth: human intelligence advances when
technology adds to rather than replaces learning.(解决办法不在于拒绝技术,而在于重新平衡它的作用。
D。
Passage 3
Good relationships play a crucial role in
maintaining our well-being, safeguarding us from various health issues and potentially increasing our lifespan. With
the remarkable progress of AI, chatbots have emerged as versatile tools, functioning as personalized therapists,
companions, and even romantic partners, leading to millions of downloads of related apps.
MIT sociologist and psychologist Sherry Turkle has been delving into the relationship between humans and
technology for decades. Her latest research centers on “artificial intimacy”. In a case, Turkle documented a man in
a stable marriage who has formed a deep romantic connection with a chatbot “girlfriend”. He reported that he
respected his wife, but she was busy taking care of their kids, and he felt they had lost their romantic spark. So he
turned to a chatbot to express his thoughts, ideas, fears, and anxieties. Turkle pointed out that such relationships
create an illusion of intimacy, which is a false sense of human closeness, lack genuine empathy, and may set
unrealistic expectations for real-life human relationships.
There are indeed some potential health benefits to these AI-based relationships. Therapy bots can break
down the barriers of accessibility and affordability that otherwise hinder people from seeking mental health
treatment. Personal assistant bots can remind people to take their medications, or help them stop smoking.
However, drawbacks also exist. There are concerns about the chatbots offering harmful advice, especially to those
in vulnerable mental states, and serious privacy issues as user data is collected without sufficient user control.
According to Turkle, as soon as a user begins chatting with a bot, thousands of trackers go to work collecting data
about them, including any private thoughts they shared.
If you’re thinking of engaging with chatbots in this deeper, more intimate way, Turkle suggests that we
should constantly bear in mind that they are not human, and we should always cherish the not-so-pleasant aspects
of human relationships. Stress, friction, pushback and vulnerability are what allow us to experience a full range of
emotions. It’s what makes us human.
1. What does the underlined word “versatile” in Para.1 probably mean?
A. Multi-functional.
B. Well-designed.
C. Long-standing.
D. Tailor-made.
2. What can be inferred from the example of the married man?
A. Chatbots have little influence on real-life relationships.
B. Married people develop attachments to chatbots easily.
C. Chatbots can produce an unrea l feeling of closeness.
D. AI provides us with emotional support in real social life.
3. What is the main idea of paragraph 3?
A. The future prospects of AI in different fields.
B. The pros and cons of AI-human relationships.
C. The comparison between different types of chatbots.
D. The importance of privacy protection in AI technology.
4. What is Turkle’s attitude toward using chatbots?
A. Cautious.
B. Ambiguous.
C. Supportive.
D. Disgusting.
A 2. C 3. B 4. A
根据划线词后的“functioning as personalized therapists, companions, and even romantic
故选A 项。
In a case, Turkle documented a man in a stable marriage who has formed a
deep romantic connection with a chatbot “girlfriend”. He reported that he respected his wife, but she was busy
taking care of their kids, and he felt they had lost their romantic spark. So he turned to a chatbot to express his
thoughts, ideas, fears, and anxieties. Turkle pointed out that such relationships create an illusion of intimacy, which
is a false sense of human closeness, lack genuine empathy, and may set unrealistic expectations for real-life human
relationships.
There are indeed some potential health benefits to these AI-based relationships.
If you’re thinking of engaging with chatbots in this deeper, more
intimate way, Turkle suggests that we should constantly bear in mind that they are not human, and we should
always cherish the not-so-pleasant aspects of human relationships. Stress, friction, pushback and vulnerability are
what allow us to experience a full range of emotions. It’s what makes us human.
故选A 项。
Passage 4
A new commodity brings about a
highly profitable, fast-growing industry, urging antitrust(反垄断) regulators to step in to check those who control its
flow. A century ago, the resource in question was oil. Now similar concerns are being raised by the giants(巨头)
that deal in data, the oil of the digital age. The most valuable firms are Google, Amazon, Facebook and Microsoft.
All look unstoppable.
Such situations have led to calls for the tech giants to be broken up. But size alone is not a crime. The giants’
success has benefited consumers. Few want to live without search engines or a quick delivery. Far from charging
consumers high prices, many of these services are free (users pay, in effect, by handing over yet more data). And
the appearance of new-born giants suggests that newcomers can make waves, too.
But there is cause for concern. The internet has made data abundant, all-present and far more valuable,
changing the nature of data and competition. Google initially used the data collected from users to target
advertising better. But recently it has discovered that data can be turned into new services: translation and visual
recognition, to be sold to other companies. Internet companies’ control of data gives them enormous power. So they
have a "God’s eye view" of activities in their own markets and beyond.
This nature of data makes the antitrust measures of the past less useful. Breaking up firms like Google into
five small ones would not stop remaking themselves: in time, one of them would become great again. A rethink is
required — and as a new approach starts to become apparent, two ideas stand out.
The first is that antitrust authorities need to move from the industrial age into the 21st century. When
considering a merger(兼并), for example, they have traditionally used size to determine when to step in. They now
need to take into account the extent of firms’ data assets(资产) when assessing the impact of deals. The purchase
price could also be a signal that an established company is buying a new-born threat. When this takes place,
especially when a new-born company has no revenue to speak of, the regulators should raise red flags.
The second principle is to loosen the control that providers of on-line services have over data and give more
to those who supply them. Companies could be forced to reveal to consumers what information they hold and how
much money they make from it. Governments could order the sharing of certain kinds of data, with users’ consent.
Restarting antitrust for the information age will not be easy. But if governments don’t want a data economy
controlled by a few giants, they must act soon.
1. Why is there a call to break up giants?
A. They have controlled the data market.
B. They collect enormous private data.
C. They no longer provide free services.
D. They dismissed some new-born giants.
2. What does the technological innovation in Paragraph 3 indicate?
A. Data giants’ technology is very expensive.
B. Google’s idea is popular among data firms.
C. Data can strengthen giants’ controlling position.
D. Data can be turned into new services or products.
3. By paying attention to firms’ data assets, antitrust regulators could .
A. kill a new threat
B. avoid the size trap
C. favour bigger firms
D. charge higher prices
4. What is the purpose of loosening the giants’ control of data?
A. Big companies could relieve data security pressure.
B. Governments could relieve their financial pressure.
C. Consumers could better protect their privacy.
D. Small companies could get more opportunities.
A 2. C 3. B 4. D
Now similar concerns ares being raised by the giants(巨头)that deal in data,
the oil of the digital age. Such situations have led to calls for the tech giants to be broken up.
故选A 项。
But recently it has discovered that data can be turned into new services:
translation and visual recognition, to be sold to other companies. Internet companies’ control of data gives them
enormous power.
根据第五段第二、三句When considering a merger(兼并),for example, they have traditionally
used size to determine when to step in. They now need to take into account the extent of firms' data assets( 资产)
when assessing the impact of deals.
The second principle is to loosen the control that providers of online
services have over data and give more to those who supply them.
Passage 5
(2025 湖南省长沙市南雅中学高三下学期高考演练)Let’s face it: we are influenced by AI algorithms(算法)
when surfing the Internet on a daily basis.
If you think about it, almost anything you can possibly click on over the Internet wants to influence you in
some way. Even if it’s not an advertisement and the goal isn’t literally to sell you a product or service, it wants to
influence you somehow, whether it’s getting you to think something, feel something, or do something.
Behind every blogger, YouTube personality, and social media influencer, there are the companies that own
the platforms these bloggers and influencers use: YouTube, Meta, TikTok, Instagram, and the rest. Generally
speaking, the goal of these platforms is to keep users on them as often as possible for as long as possible and this
increases the likelihood of those users clicking on targeted ads.
These platforms use the users’ data to serve the content most likely to arouse their emotions and keep them
engaged. The kind of content that’s effective at keeping people engaged often happens to be emotionally charged:
sensational(轰动的), controversial, or misinformative. Unfortunately, due to its massive computing power, AI is
very good at understanding your psychology (often better than you do) and, therefore, using content that is most
likely to “push your buttons”.
Obviously, AI itself has no emotions. It doesn’t “want” to influence you or to have power over you, but it
does simply because, in the context of the Internet, that’s what it’s been programmed to do. The people who use AI
as their tools are simply trying to accomplish the goal of any platform or company, which is to be profitable.
In a previous post, I wrote about being data literate. Well, the first step towards protecting yourself against
AI’s influence is to be conscious of the fact that we live in an attention economy in which much of the business
occurs between companies that want your attention and the content platforms that provide it to them.
1. What message does the author try to convey about social media in paragraph 3?
A. It is developing rapidly.
B. It is trying to control us.
C. It enjoys great popularity.
D. It offers us a variety of choices.
2. What kind of content do the social media platforms favour most?
A. The content that causes emotional reactions.
B. The content that creates value for users.
C. The content that spreads positive energy. D. The content that makes users feel satisfied.
3. Which of the following may be to blame according to the author?
A. AI algorithms. B. Content creators.
C. Social media users.
D. Social media platforms.
4. What will the author probably talk about in the paragraph that follows?
A. How social media platforms work.
B. How AI algorithms are influencing us.
C. Some measures to protect ourselves.
D. Some negative effects of AI algorithms.
B 2. A 3. D 4. C
Behind every blogger, YouTube personality, and social media influencer, there are
the companies that own the platforms these bloggers and influencers use: YouTube, Meta, TikTok, Instagram, and
the rest. Generally speaking, the goal of these platforms is to keep users on them as often as possible for as long as

The kind of content that’s effective at keeping people engaged often happens to
be emotionally charged: sensational (轰动的), controversial,or misinformative.(那些能有效吸引人们的内容往
选A。
Obviously, AI itself has no emotions. It doesn’t “want” to influence you or to
have power over you, but it does simply because, in the context of the Internet, that’s what it’s been programmed to
do. The people who use AI as their tools are simply trying to accomplish the goal of any platform or company,
which is to be profitable.(显然,人工智能本身没有情感。
Behind every blogger,
YouTube personality, and social media influencer, there are the companies that own the platforms these bloggers
and influencers use: YouTube, Meta, TikTok, Instagram, and the rest.(在每个博主、YouTube 名人和社交媒体影
Well, the first step towards protecting yourself against AI’s influence is to be
conscious of the fact that we live in an attention economy in which much of the business occurs between companies
that want your attention and the content platforms that provide it to them.(保护自己不受人工智能影响的第一步
Passage 6
During a judging period for a recent short story
contest, I started thinking a lot about dialogue tags. Because in many submissions characters didn’t “say” a thing.
They shouted, they inquired, they assumed. Some characters screamed while others murmured. But no one “said”
anything. And I started wondering why.
The more I thought about it, the more I understood the temptation. We’re always encouraged to use strong,
actionable verbs in our prose. Why walk when you can skip or wander? Why cry when you can sob or weep? Why
wouldn’t we reach for exciting verbs instead of dull “said”? Why couldn’t each verb be a tiny sparkling gem in its
own right? The problem, I think, is that every jewel needs a setting to become something more than the sum of its
parts. Without something to provide structure, a collection of the world’s most glorious diamonds would still only
amount to a heap of rocks.
Dialogue is your diamond, friends. When we read your work, your dialogue should be so lifelike that our
brains “hear” each line instead of merely reading it. We don’t need to be told a character is shouting — we can
sense it in the way they spit out words, clench fists, or storm from the room. What’s more, readers may not initially
imagine a particular line being “sobbed.” When we reach the end of a sentence and find out our leading lady has
actually sobbed instead of whispered, it pulls us right out of the story. We pause. We reread the line. We adjust our
understanding and begin again. But that wonderful momentum when we’re fully immersed in the scene, holding
our breath to find out what our heroine says next, is lost.
Creating a successful work of fiction is about giving the reader all the materials they need to build your
fictional world in their mind. Readers need believable dialogue. And if you’ve created dynamic characters who
speak words we can really hear, you will never need to tell us how something was said.
1. What do we know from the first two paragraphs?
A. The word “said” is overused in our stories.
B. The use of exciting verbs makes characters alive.
C. Varieties of verbs are preferred by judges at contests.
D. Strong verbs are considered to be an eye-catcher.
2. According to the author, ______ contributes most to a good story.
A. a talkative character
B. a vivid conversation
C. a collection of dialogue tags
D. a wild imagination
3. Which of the following does the author probably agree with?
A. Creative dialogue tags help keep readers immersed in reading.
B. What was said should be prioritised over how it was said.
C. Readers may better understand a scene after rereading the line.
D. The more materials a work of fiction contains, the more successful it is.
4. What argumentative methods are used in this article?
Using examples
①
Justifying an assumption
②
Comparing and contrasting
③
Appealing to readers’ emotions
④
A. ①②
B. ②④
C. ③④
D. ①③
D 2. B 3. B 4. A
We’re always encouraged to use strong, actionable verbs in our prose.
Why couldn’t each verb be a tiny
sparkling gem in its own right?(为什么每个动词本身就不能成为一颗闪闪发光的小宝石呢?)”
Dialogue is your diamond, friends. When we read your work, your
dialogue should be so lifelike that our brains “hear” each line instead of merely reading it.(对话就是你的钻石,朋
Readers need believable dialogue. And if you’ve created dynamic
characters who speak words we can really hear, you will never need to tell us how something was said.(读者需要
B“What was said should be prioritised over how it
They shouted, they inquired, they assumed. Some characters screamed
while others murmured. But no one ‘said’ anything.(他们叫喊着,他们询问着,他们猜想着。
When we read your work, your dialogue should be so lifelike that our brains “hear” each line instead
of merely reading it. We don’t need to be told a character is shouting…(当我们阅读你的作品时,你的对话应该
A 项。
Passage 7
Imagine waking up one
morning to find your smartphone missing. You can no longer get guided to work, order your coffee, or connect with
friends. For most of us, it is a nightmare(噩梦). But it should not be exactly far-fetched.
Despite being more digitally connected than ever, we are lonelier and more anxious. Anxiety rates increased
by 25% globally. Depression now affects over 280 million people worldwide. All of this is due to our growing
dependence on social media and smart technologies designed to offer quick relief but often at the expense of deep,
meaningful engagement, which may further cause our loss of something easy to be ignored.
While these conveniences offer short-term relief, they may weaken our thinking skills. For example, GPS
has undeniably transformed how we travel. But a 2020 study found that frequent GPS users struggle more with
self-guided navigation. Over time, those who depended more on GPS showed a sharp decline in spacial memory
and problem-solving skills. However, reducing dependence on these conveniences can lead to discomfort. In
seeking comfort today, we might be trading away some discomfort.
That is the problem: the very discomfort we avoid is often what strengthens us. Viewing stress, a kind of
discomfort, as a challenge rather than a threat leads to better outcomes. Research shows that mild stress can
enhance adaptability. Neuroscience( 神经科学) reveals that neuroplasticity—the brain's ability to form new
connections—is enhanced through challenging experiences. This adaptability is crucial for developing resilience,
(抗逆力), a process fueled by both mental challenges and active effort.
But this doesn't mean we should reject comfort entirely; it's to balance it with intentional discomfort. Think
of it as “microdosing hardship”—a series of small, manageable difficulties that keep our mental and emotional
muscles strong, such as writing with a pen, or washing dishes by hand. These small acts are enough to reawaken the
resilience we've buried under layers of ease. So, the next time you feel the pull of ease, pause. Ask yourself: Is this
momentary comfort helping me grow or is it keeping me stuck? Choosing discomfort isn't easy, but sometimes, it's
worth it.
1. What does the underlined word “far-fetched” in Paragraph 1 probably mean?
A. Possible to change.
B. Certain to function.
C. Unlikely to be settled.
D. Unable to be accepted.
2. What may digital conveniences cause according to the text?
A. The fast but worthless relief.
B. The meaningful engagement.
C. The loss of thinking capacity.
D. The lack of necessary comfort.
3. Which is a real-life application of “microdosing hardship”?
A. Taking the stairs instead of the lift.
B. Ordering take-out food after work.
C. Exploring a new city by using GPS.
D. Writing an email using voice-to-text.
4. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. GPS: the invisible cost of convenience
B. Stress: the main cause of brain damage
C. Discomfort: a hidden source of resilienceD. Smartphones: barriers to human progress
D 2. C 3. A 4. C

Imagine waking up one morning to find your smartphone missing. You can no
longer get guided to work, order your coffee, or connect with friends. For most of us, it is a nightmare(噩梦). But it
should not be exactly far-fetched.(想象一下,有一天早上醒来,发现你的智能手机不见了。
All of this is due to our growing dependence on social media and smart
technologies designed to offer quick relief but often at the expense of deep, meaningful engagement, which may
further cause our loss of something easy to be ignored. While these conveniences offer short-term relief, they may
Think of it as “microdosing hardship”—a series of small, manageable
difficulties that keep our mental and emotional muscles strong, such as writing with a pen, or washing dishes by
故选A。
Despite being more digitally connected than ever, we are lonelier
三段中“While these conveniences offer short-term relief, they may weaken our thinking skills.(虽然这些便利提
That is the problem: the very
discomfort we avoid is often what strengthens us.(这就是问题所在:我们避免的不适往往正是让我们变得坚强
Passage 1
I am someone who is outgoing, chatty and friendly. I can appreciate that at first
glance I do not appear to be any different from anyone else. I may seem ordinary on the surface. This is entirely
because I’m hiding my true self. The only reason I don’t “look like” the features associated with autism(自闭症) is
that I am often making every effort to force myself to appear “normal”. Not all autistic people do this, but I do.
I smile whenever I want to hit my head against the wall and scream. I say, “Oh, that’s fine!” when a
restaurant doesn’t have what I want, and the loss makes me feel like my skin is on fire. I force myself to make eye
contact and focus on conversations.
But sometimes I can’t maintain it. Sometimes, overcome by uncontrolled feelings, my mask( 伪装) slips.
How somebody responds to me in those moments tells me everything I need to know about their view of autistic
people.
I assume that there is a lack of understanding. When people become annoyed that I cancel plans, or when I
feel extremely upset I experience new or strange sounds and tastes, they undoubtedly lack empathy(同情) . In these
moments, I can see any acceptance of autistic people from these kinds of people is for show. It is easy to say that
you support autistic people, but if you are only supportive when that person presents as normal, then that isn’t real
support.
So, telling me that I “don’t look autistic” is more denial than praise. Someone shouldn’t have to “look
autistic” for you to believe they are autistic, nor should whether we look like it or not, and are all equally deserving
of empathy and support.

Passage 2
When I teach yoga, I usually announce “Phones off and at the back of the room” at
the beginning of class. Recently, I forgot and had to whisper to a student texting during class to turn off her phone.
She looked displeased but did so. But two days later, in another class, I met with resistance from a young woman
who completely refused.
“But I’m on call. I might have to jump up and run out of class.”
“Then maybe this isn’t the best place for you to be tonight.”
That response got me an angry and unfriendly look. But when she came back the next week, there was no
phone and she was much more present.
Present is what I’m asking my students to be. Present to themselves and their yoga experience. You cannot
be present to yoga if you are texting or emailing or anxiously awaiting a call. And neither can anyone around you.
Definitely, if one phone is out, many pairs of eyes are drawn to it. And then other phones start to appear. Forget the
fact that you’re missing the class you paid for; you’re at risk of losing your balance and hurting yourself or
someone else due to inattention, or disturbing someone else’s moment of peace and stillness with the clicking of
your keys.
So please, do yourself and everyone around you, this teacher included, a favor and turn your phone off and
put it away before you unroll your yoga mat. If you truly are on call, think hard before you come to class.
Be present for yourself, wherever you need to be.
1. How does the author introduce her topic?
A. By giving examples.
B. By making comparison.
C. By presenting the process.
D. By analyzing cause and effect.
2. Why was the young woman angry with the author?
A. She felt the author was rude.
B. She thought she was reasonable.
C. She believed she was discriminated.
D. She found the yoga class was not interesting.
3. Which is a probable result of using phone s in yoga class?
A. Relaxing yourself.
B. Disturbing others.
C. Achieving work-life balance.
D. Getting others’ admiration.
4. What’s the author’s purpose of writing this text?
A. To explain her relationship with students.
B. To describe the situation of her yoga class.
C. To show her opinion about using mobile phones.
D. To stress the importance of being attentive in yoga class.
A 2. B 3. B 4. D

stillness with the clicking of your keys.(当然,如果一部手机出现了,就会吸引很多双眼睛。
Present is what
I’m asking my students to be. Present to themselves and their yoga experience.(现在是我要我的学生做的。
第六段“do yourself and
everyone around you, this teacher included, a favor and turn your phone off and put it away before you unroll your
