The day of the surgery twenty-eight years ago still remains vivid in Hodge-Williams’ memory.
That morning, she was 1 into the surgical room on a surgical cart. She remembers being 2
by doctors, the noise of their metal surgical tools and the feeling of being 3 .
“They were getting on with their jobs, not realizing I was really 4 .” She said.
But that 5 when the anesthesiologist (麻醉师) arrived. Hodge-Williams recalled he had a kind
6 and a cap covered in sunflowers.
“Seeing my fear, he said to me, ‘OK, why not think about something you like?’ At first, I felt quite 7
, ‘How could he ask me this question when I was so fearful!’”
“In a kind of silly manner, I replied, ‘Well, what do you like?’ And very 8 , he said, ‘Singing.’”
So Hodge-Williams asked him to 9 . “Then he started singing ‘The Phantom of the Opera,’ which
accompanied me to gradually

 1 0

 .”
In the years since that day, Hodge-Williams has experienced multiple surgeries. But she still imagines that
doctor

 1 1

 .
“I can

 1 2

him almost with me through every surgery: his calm and

 1 3

  voice, his gentle
and relaxed smile... They meant much to me, not just the science of medicine, but also the

 1 4

  and care
for me. Although I don’t know his name, I will always be

 1 5

  to him.” Hodge-Williams said.

The day of my surgery, performed at a medical center, is etched in my memory.
Wearing nothing but a hospital garment, I was

 1

into the surgical room, surrounded by doctors, the
2

of their metal surgical tools and the feeling of being alone. I was really

 3

  about what was going to
happen in the next few hours. But that

 4

when the anesthesiologist (麻醉师) arrived. With a kind

 5
, she said to me, “OK, why don’t you think about something that you like to do?”
At first, I thought the question was
  6

. I was worried about the surgery but my anesthesiologist was
asking me what I liked to do for 7

. In an amusing way, I

 8

, “Well, what do you like to do?” Very 9
, she said, “I like to sing.” So I asked her to sing a song for me. Then she

 1 0

  singing “The Phantom of the

It was a sunny weekend. I had planned to go mountain climbing in the suburbs with Daniel. However, a
sudden heavy rain that morning disrupted my plan. Looking out of the window, I couldn’t help feeling a little 1
as the rain poured down.
However, Daniel 2 , “Since we can’t go mountain climbing, why don’t we go to an old 3 in
the city? I heard there are many interesting shops and delicious food there.” I thought it was a good idea and 4
. We braved the heavy rain and arrived at the old neighborhood. Although the sky was still 5 , the old
buildings and unique atmosphere of the neighborhood attracted us.
We walked through the narrow streets and admired the 6 shops to both sides. In one coffee shop, we
tasted the delicious coffee. 7 a strange figure walked into the coffee shop. He looked 8 , whose eyes
seemed to be looking for something. Out of 9 , we took the

 1 0

to talk to him. It turned out that he
was a photographer and he had just lost an important memory card which contained his works of many years. He
had been searching for it for a long time, but still couldn’t find it. After hearing

 1 1

  his troubles, we
decided to help him. We searched around, but in vain. Just when we were about to give up, a little kid

checking it was

tears in his eyes. We felt happy that we could help him and it added more meaning to this

After breakfast, Father was busy reading the newspaper while Mother was watching TV. Suddenly, my father
said, “Let’s buy a grandfather clock (落地钟).” Mother replied

The man was so

didn’t it? Didn’t I tell you that it was a

After all, it did save us. Maybe it is one of the very few things that Father bought and was

I was traveling from Benin to Togo. Being a(n) 1 , I had to be stamped in and out of both countries
rather than doing as the locals who just showed their ID.I left my 2 in the shared taxi and jumped out at
the immigration (边防检查站). But by the time I’d been 3 , got my Togo visa, and crossed over, the taxi
had 4 , leaving nothing on me other than a shirt, trousers, my passport and phone.
I wasn’t too 5 at first — I hadn’t paid him yet. However, after waiting for 15 minutes, I panicked.
Several thoughts 6 my mind. I’d lost pretty much everything. I 7 I would have to go to the
British Embassy (大使馆) in Lomé to present my 8 , then realized there wasn’t one. Was I going to 9
a country I was only visiting because it was “in the way”?
Just as I was about to lose

  avoided, I
headed on towards Lomé, with a renewed faith in humanity’s goodness that often lies beneath the surface of life’s

One morning outside the baseball stadium in New York, a taxi parked near the entrance. Johannes Peter, a
(an) 1 pitcher (棒球投手), climbed in. “To the train station, please,” he told the driver. “You’re Johannes
Peter,” the taxi driver said excitedly, “You got some good stuff.”
After the previous night’s disastrous performance, this 2 the pitcher. “I think there are things you
should think about 3 ,” the driver continued, “I don’t know; I’m not a

 4

 . Maybe something like
going over your head in your windup (摆臂动作).”
Wait, what? This guy was offering

 5

? Earlier in his career, he might have 6 , or been
angry. But today, he just 7 . He couldn’t afford to dismiss anything. His career was on the line.
During the game the next day, rather than keep his hands tight to his chest at the beginning of his delivery,
Johannes raised them briefly over his head, as the taxi driver had 8 . Johannes included the new 9
into his next start. It was the turning point in his career. Five years later, he signed the first contract extension of his
Major League Baseball career — at age 34.
The funny thing about advice: We often take it from the

 1 0

people. That is, we always tend to
1 1

the advice of experts. “Expert advisers often make surprisingly inaccurate predictions about the future, yet
people

 1 2

their suggestions nevertheless,” concluded Stanford psychologists in a study published last
year. The more

 1 3

people become, the fewer advisers they

 1 4

. So it requires a massive
increase of modesty to do what Johannes Peter did: hear what the taxi driver was offering him and accept it as a

The art of living is to know when to hold fast and when to let go. Many people 1 it this way, “A man
comes to this world with his fist clenched (紧握), but when he dies, his hand is 2 .”
Surely we ought to hold fast to life, for it is amazing, and full of a beauty that 3 your own earth.
Sometimes we recognize this 4 only in our backward glance when we suddenly realize that it is no more.
We remember a beauty that 5 , a love that disappeared. But we remember with far greater pain that
we did not see that beauty when it flowered, that we 6 to respond with love when it was tendered.
A recent experience re-taught me this truth. I was 7 following a severe heart attack and had been in
intensive care for several days. It was not a pleasant place. One morning, I had to have some additional tests. The
required machines were located in a building at the opposite end of the hospital, so I had to be 8 across the
courtyard on a gurney (轮床).
As we 9 from our unit, the sunlight hit me. That’s

 1 0

. And yet how beautiful it was — how
warming, how sparkling, how brilliant!
I looked to see whether anyone else enjoyed the sun’s golden glow, but everyone was

 1 1

  to and
from, most with eyes fixed on the ground. Then I remembered how often we had been
  1 2

  to the beauty of
each day, too preoccupied with chores. Life’s gifts are 1 3

  — but we always pay no attention to them. Never
too busy for the wonder and the awe of life. Embrace each hour,

 1 4

each golden minute. Hold fast to life …
but not so fast that you can’t let go. We must

 1 5

our losses, and learn how to let go.

I had a highly successful career, eventually rising to the position of department head. 1 , one
afternoon last May, I was called into the manager’s office and informed that my 2 were no longer required.
Overcome by a sense of failure, I sat there in 3 . Despite being respected in my field, I suddenly felt
worthless.
For the subsequent six weeks, I felt 4 . I wandered around my house aimlessly, lacking the 5
to do anything. The once-promising future now seemed clouded with doubt and insecurity.
Then, towards the end of June, my youngest son’s 6 made it to the final. Two years ago, I 7
to fulfill my commitment to participate in the competition due to work-related reasons. This time, nevertheless, a
look of 8 lit up his face when I promised him I would be there. Not only did they win the championship,
but witnessing the happiness on my son’s face as I 9 him during the soccer match brought unspoken joy to
my own heart
From then on, I spent the summer

 1 0

my older son at his band performances, and

 1 1

traveling to another city to watch him play. These moments held profound meaning for me. Having dedicated the

 1 3

welcomed me into their world.
Surprisingly, being

 1 4

gave me a newfound sense of purpose — I am someone’s mother! I
regained a feeling of being valued. It was a feeling that I had not experienced in a long time. Now I feel more
positive about my professional experience in my new job and I’m getting along better with my

 1 5

  than I
ever have.
