Passage 1

・
Lily and I have been best friends since primary school. We shared everything — snacks, secrets, and even
dreams of joining the school’s drama club together. But things changed when the drama club announced auditors for
the lead role in The Little Prince.
I’ve always loved acting — ever since I played a tiny rabbit in a primary school play, I’d dreamed of standing
center stage with all eyes on me. This lead role, with its gentle lines about friendship and courage, felt like it was
made just for me. Lily said she wanted to try out, too, but I could see hesitation flicker in her eyes — she’s always
been shy, her voice softening to a whisper when she has to speak in front of more than a few people. “We’ll practice
together every afternoon,” I promised, though a small, selfish part of me hoped I’d stand out more, that the role would
be mine.
The next two weeks were busy. We rehearsed lines every afternoon, but I noticed Lily was getting better —
her voice grew clearer, and her expressions more natural. On the day before auditions, she accidentally saw my
notebook full of extra practice notes. Her smile faded, and she said quietly, “You must really want this.” I didn’t know
how to reply.
Audition day arrived. I went first and gave it my all, but my hands were shaking the whole time. When Lily
walked on stage, something amazing happened. She didn’t look shy at all — she was confident, even shining. When
she finished, the judges nodded approvingly. I felt a mix of pride and worry in my chest.
That evening, the sky turned pink as the drama teacher taped the audition results to the noticeboard. Students
crowded around at first, but soon left, chatting about who’d gotten what. I hung back, watching Lily kick at a pebble
on the ground, and wondered if we’d still be as close if only one of us made it.

・
Amy walked into the noisy gym and pulled her kneepads (护膝) up over her knees. She was excited about
volleyball camp, but also really nervous. She’d never been alone at a camp like this before! She hoped she would
make friends soon.
She looked around at the girls talking excitedly to each other. “I wish I was more like Lucy,” she thought. Lucy
was her sister. She could talk to anyone and become good friends.
But Amy was more ... quiet. At school, she usually liked to read her book instead of talking before class. She
didn’t mind working by herself on school projects. And when it was her birthday, she invited just a few friends to go
skating instead of having a big party.
The coach blew her whistle, and Amy jogged over to join the others for warm-up exercises. Amy felt a little
awkward, but she tried to talk to a few of the girls.
After hours of serving, passing, and playing get-to-know-you games, it was finally time for lunch. Amy brought
her food to a round table and sat next to some other players. Everyone was talking loudly and singing in funny voices.
Amy bit quietly on her carrot sticks.
One of the older girls at the table noticed Amy being quiet. “Hey!” She put her hand on Amy’s shoulder and
shook it playfully. “Be yourself! Just be crazy!”
Amy felt embarrassed. “But what if I am being myself?” she thought. “What if I don’t want to be crazy?”
Maybe there was something wrong with her. Everyone seemed to like the girls who were loud.
At the end of the day, Amy was glad to see Mom’s car pull up. “How was it?” Mom asked.
“Fun,” Amy said as she climbed into her seat. And it had been fun ... sort of.
Amy sighed. Tomorrow would be another day of camp, surrounded by people she didn’t know. She would
have to be brave all over again.

Teamwork Lights the Way
For weeks, the class buzzed with excitement for the handmade craft show. Each group needed a unique, good-
looking and useful craft for the school art fair. Lily teamed up with decisive Sophia and Jake who had an eye for
details. Thrilled yet a bit nervous about perfection, they started working.
Their first get-together was in the sun-filled art room. Sophia’s eyes sparkled as she proposed, “What if we
make a lamp from plastic bottles?” Jake was attracted by the idea but voiced a concern, “Sounds amazing, yet dealing
with lights and ensuring a steady structure? We’re complete beginners at that.” Lily picked up one of the empty
bottles and examined it. She said that those could work, adding that they would need a solid base and safe battery-
powered LED lights.
Over the next days, they worked day in and day out. They referred to books, searched for online advice, and
gathered supplies: bottles, a glue gun, wires, and LED lights. However, building the lamp was tougher than they
expected. There were moments when they thought they wouldn’t finish in time for the presentation. As the fair neared,
late nights heightened their deadline anxiety.
The night before the fair, exhausted yet hopeful, they readied for the final test. Sophia held her breath as Lily
inserted the batteries. The LED lights lit up, painting the walls with gentle, liquid light. Then a loud BANG! The
lamp crashed onto the table. “No! What’s wrong?” Lily cried, rushing over. Jake knelt, discovering a thin crack (裂
缝) in the base, “This base wasn’t thick enough to bear the weight.” Their painstaking creation lay in ruins. With
dawn approaching, disappointment washed over them.
Sophia stared at the broken pieces for a moment. Then she grabbed the glue gun, her voice firm. “We’ve put
in far too much effort to give up now.” she declared. Her words pulled Lily and Jake out of their hopelessness.

The sun was shining over the parking lot of the sports centre. My best friend Janey and I stood by an old
truck. It belonged to the company that had just laid new grass on the football field. There was still a lot of extra
grass in the back — left over from the job.
For months, we’d walked past a small empty lot near our school every day — a place full of weeds, old bottles,
and broken bricks. It looked ugly, lifeless and forgotten.
Seeing the leftover grass in the truck, Janey’s eyes lit up. “Let’s take. some!” she said excitedly. “We could
spread it on that empty lot. Imagine green grass instead of all that rubbish there!”
A wave of doubt washed over me. “But we haven’t asked. Taking it without permission isn’t right.” “The
company won’t need it,” she argued. I shook my head. “What if they don’t allow it? We could get into real trouble
then.” I still stuck to my guns. “There’s no one here to ask!” she said firmly. “With such strong sunlight, the grass
will dry out and go to waste!”
Just then, a security guard of the parking lot came around the corner. “Hey! What are you doing there?” he
called out.
My heart jumped. Janey quickly pulled me behind the truck. As we moved, we touched the tailgate (后挡板)
by accident and it burst open — several rolls of grass fell to the ground with a dull sound. The guard hurried over.
“What’s going on here?” he asked, his eyes on the fallen grass.
Staring at the green rolls on the concrete, Janey looked at me, her face pale but determined. “Now we really
have to do something,” she whispered.

When I worked as a nurse, I was on day duty while my workmates were on night duty. On one shift, I sensed
something just before going off duty at 11 am. I put down the tray(托盘) on the table and suddenly it fell off the
table. At first I thought I had accidentally knocked it over, but then I felt the whole building shaking and heard patients
were screaming.
I realized that an earthquake was happening. I quickly caught hold of a nearby patient, who was terribly
frightened and pushed her under a bed. And then, I got under another bed myself. As soon as the earthquake stopped, I
decided to try and get the patient safely outside. I carried her out and helped her down to the grassland, where several
other people had gathered.
Afraid that my other workmates were in danger, I went back inside the building again. When I met Lucy ,our
ward sister(护士长),I found her patient couldn't walk. We made a seat for the patient by linking our hands and
arms, and carried her outside together. We went back through the building to check no one was left behind in our
ward(病房).
Just then, we saw that a man doctor was calling for volunteers to go down to other wards with him to help
more people. So we went together. The doctor went ahead of us and found one of the nurses partially covered with
rubble(碎石),luckily still alive. Suddenly, the aftershock (余震)struck and the doctor ordered us to leave. The
brave doctor intended to stay alone and risk his own life to save the nurse.

・
After the hurricane, the power supply in our block was unstable, and the stores were empty. My neighbour
Tanesha built a small booth (棚子) in her yard so people could leave each other messages inside. When I went into
the booth on the first day, people were already posting up notes asking to exchange stuff. I started going over every
day around noon to help Tanesha organise the booth.
One day, she said,“Most of the block is using this booth, but not everyone. We should check on people, don’t
you think?” She was right. Then, we made a list of the houses on the block. There was a small number of names and a
lot of phrases like“the ones with the generator (发电机)” and“the teenager with the loud car.”
“You do the east side and I’ll do the west side,” Tanesha said.“Okay,” I said. Then, I walked down to the corner
to start.
The people with the generator were at mid-block. Most of us didn’t have generators — we just charged up
what we could during the hours we had power. This house’s generator ran during every power failure.
I walked up the steps and knocked on the door. An old man opened it.“I’m Alexis,”I said.“I’m just checking
in with everyone to see if they’ re okay. If you need anything, please let me know.”
“Can you wait — no, just come in,” he said.
“Clifford?”I heard a woman call.“Is someone here? Who is it?”
I followed him into the living room. Then, I saw an elderly woman sitting on a chair. She didn’t look well.“This
is Alexis, Susan,” Clifford told her.“Maybe she can help us.”
It turned out that Susan was very ill and she needed additional oxygen, so they ran an oxygen concentrator to
turn room air into pure oxygen. The concentrator couldn’t run without power; that was why they fired up the generator
every time the power went out. However, they were running out of propane (丙烷), a fuel for the generator.

“Bye, Mom; bye, Dad; don’t worry. We’ll take care of everything!” Carly waved from the front door of the
shop as her parents drove off. They were headed for a well-deserved vacation from their candy store, and Carly had
promised them she’d be able to run it by herself. Her parents didn’t quite agree originally. However, they gave in by
having Carly’s Aunt Maggie come over and help. Her parents often called her aunt “uniquely creative” and Carly
always had fun when her aunt was around.
Maggie blew into the store happily. “All right, Carly my love, what do we do first?” she smiled at her niece.
Carly knew clearly the main job was to serve-customers, so she could hardly wait to make her best candies. Seeing
them on display, Aunt Maggie bit a bite of the chocolate mint-flavored candy. “It’s good, but... unoriginal,” commented
her aunt. “We can do better.” Before Carly could question what Maggie meant, the woman had gone to investigate
the kitchen in the back. Shortly, she came back, hands full of items.
“We need to add some of these to better that basic taste.” “Brussels sprouts?” Carly looked at her aunt,
thunderstruck. She couldn’t be serious! But she was. Carly’s eyes grew wide as she watched her aunt mix it together.
“And some spicy sauce? That’s definitely an ice cream flavor. The cold will perfectly make candies less spicy!”
Carly shook her head in shock as Maggie continued her strange combinations: lemonade with pickle juice,
barbeque-flavored candyfloss(棉花糖), and lima bean ice cream…

Mia had a great start to the day. She had a good night’s sleep and stayed in bed until seven o’clock. Her husband
and her lovely son had gone skiing, so she could enjoy her freedom. Also, the house was very quiet and peaceful.
“I’ll take a nap before I have breakfast,” thought the sleepy woman as she turned around and closed her eyes again.
However, a few minutes later, Mia woke up to a strange noise. “What was that?” thought Mia. The noise soon
stopped, so she turned around again, thinking, “It was probably something in my dream.” But when she turned back
to the other side of the bed, she heard the noise again. She was sure that the sound was coming from the window. Out
of curiosity, she got out of bed and approached the window.
When she pulled the curtain aside, Mia couldn’t believe what she saw. There were two little squirrels (松鼠)
in a nest, which might not be old enough to move freely. The noise was coming from here. The curtain in the room
had been drawn for the past few weeks, so she hadn’t noticed that the lovely animals were making a nest on the tree
branch beside the window. “I have to get this on camera,” she thought eagerly. She immediately took her camera and
took pictures of the two cute squirrels.
The little squirrels were relaxed inside the nest. Mia could tell how peaceful the little creatures felt.
Unfortunately, the window wouldn’t open, or she would have touched them and patted their heads.
“Their mother must have left them alone to look for food,” Mia thought, trying to get the perfect pictures from
different angles. Actually, she wanted to take a clear picture of their cute, sleepy faces. However, she got the shock
of her life when she brought the camera closer to the squirrels. An eagle resting on a tree opposite threatened to attack
the tiny babies.

Joy, a ten-year-old boy who loved nature, is always ready to help others, whether animals or humans. For
example, he is always keeping water in a large basin in his yard for watering the birds and other animals.
One noon, he was playing on the grass in a bushy garden after school. He enjoyed the chirping (叽喳叫) birds,
colorful butterflies, and two squirrels playing on the coconut trees. It was their own free kingdom, and Joy felt like
an outsider. He decided to give them space to enjoy freely.
So he found an open grass and lay down, feeling like sunbathing on a greeny beach. Under the hot sun, Joy
covered the eyes with his soft palms (手掌). His mind flew and thought about his class teacher Miss Shyla’s homework
task — to do a good deed every day.
Joy stretched (伸出) out his hands, fed the squirrel some crazy biscuits and played with it. He felt the tiny eyes
of a squirrel upon him. And just then, Joy saw a big rat spying on him from a hole. Upon seeing the big rat, Joy rose to
his feet before it silently moving and running towards the hole. Finally, he failed to find the rat and the rat hid into
its hole. Joy lay down again.
As he enjoyed the greeny beach and the sight of the blue sky, he couldn’t help but thought, “What a wonderful
and blessed world it is! We humans should allow the animals to live as they wished.”
Suddenly, a tiny bird fell to the ground before his eyes. The bird shook several times and then lost
consciousness (知觉). Joy jumped up and tried his best to wake the bird up, but failed. He thought the bird had
fainted (晕倒) because of the heat. He couldn’t bear to see the little creature suffer and decided to take care of the
bird.

・
Lila’s fingers trembled as she stared at the math test paper, and numbers blurred (模糊) together, formulas
slipping from her memory — this was the third mock exam she’d failed “You’re not cut out for science.” her cousin
had sneered (嘲笑) last week, and even her mom had hesitated when she said she wanted to study environmental
science. But Lila’s eyes drifted to the photo stuck to her desk: a young girl planting a sapling (树苗), grinning under
the sun. That was her, at 10, vowing to protect forests. She couldn’t give up now.
She packed her bag slowly, ignoring the whispers of classmates as she left the classroom. Instead of going
home, she walked to the community library, where Ms. Hale, the librarian, always saved a desk for her. “Tough day?”
Ms. Hale asked, handing a warm cup of tea across the table. Lila nodded, holding back her tears in her eyes. “I’m so
stupid — I’ve studied for weeks, but I still get everything wrong.” Ms. Hale smiled softly, pointing to the potted
cactus (仙人掌)on her desk. “See that? It seemed to have died last winter, but I kept watering it, now look — new
growth.” She tapped Lila’s textbook. “Progress isn’t about being perfect. It’s about not stopping.”
That night, Lila made a plan. She woke up an hour earlier each morning to review formulas, stayed after school
to ask teacher for extra practice, and crossed out every negative thought in her notebook. Some days were harder than
others — once, she cried after getting a quiz score that barely improved. But she thought of the cactus and her dream
— and kept going. Her classmates started noticing: they saw her raising her hand in class, helping others with
problems she’d once struggled with.
On the day of the final mock exam, Lila took a deep breath before opening the paper. Her hands still shook a
little, but this time, it was from excitement, not fear. She worked steadily, recalling the hours she’d spent practicing,
the encouragement from Ms. Hale, the promise she’d made to her 10-year-old self. When she finished, she felt calm
— proud, even regardless of the result.

・
I was incredibly proud of my school, the Maplewood Elementary. It connected me to my roots, as my father
and grandfather had all graduated from here.
So, when our teacher Mr. Dow announced a group project to create a brochure (小册子) about our school for
its 100th anniversary, I was thrilled. The best three brochures would be displayed in the school library, which was a
chance to show the new students how wonderful our school was.
I was paired with two classmates: Jake. who loved photography, and Lily who had a gift for writing. Working
with others could be fun, right? But my enthusiasm quickly faded.
Our first meeting was a disaster. When we discussed which part of the school we should focus on, Jake kept
talking about cameras and photos. I turned to Lily, hoping for some support. But she simply shrugged and said, “I’m
not really into this. It sounds boring.” Jake nodded in agreement. The project seemed to be harder than I thought.
At our next meeting, I tried to lead the conversation back to the project. I shared some interesting facts I had
researched about the school. However, neither of them seemed interested. Jake had promised to gather materials from
the library, but instead he showed us photos taken on the weekend. Lily hadn’t started her part of the research either,
claiming she had been too busy. I felt like I was the only one who cared.
Back home, I decided to take matters into my own hands. I stayed up late that night, trying to create the
brochure by myself. But no matter how hard I tried, the result was far from satisfactory. I was exhausted and
disheartened. My mom noticed I was upset. “You can’t do this alone,” she gently reminded me. “Jake and Lily have
talents that can make this project shine. You just need to find a way to get them involved.”

It’s my graduation day! The ceremony was to be held in a large auditorium downtown on a damp December
afternoon. As I prepared for this important day, choosing a simple black dress and even putting on makeup — both
unusual for me — my mind was occupied with anxiety rather than excitement.
Due to my neurological condition (神经系统疾病) that affected my mobility and coordination (协调性), the
upcoming ceremony filled me with fear. I had learned that I would need to negotiate a flight of stairs during the
proceedings. The mere thought of walking across the stage was terrifying enough, but the additional challenge of
stairs seemed impossible. To make matters worse, I would have to shake hands with my professors and receive my
diploma with my right hand, which has limited control due to my condition These seemingly small details felt like
impossible obstacles
Consumed by fear, I called Sally in tears, telling her I couldn’t go through with it. She had been my notetaker
throughout university because of my condition, but she was far more than that. We had been through many rough
spots during the past two years. We took all our classes together, studied together, and edited each other’s work.
Sally listened patiently as I poured out my anxieties. Then, she responded with determined support. “You are
walking, damn it!” she declared firmly. She promised to handle everything and made me promise to show up at the
auditorium. Though still fearful, I splashed cold water on my tear-stained face, touched up my makeup, and whispered
to myself, “I’m doing this.”
When I arrived at the auditorium, the reality of those frightening stairs hit me again. Just as panic began to
seize me. Sally found me immediately. She hugged me tightly and assured me, “I have it all worked out. It’s going
to be fine.” To my surprise, I noticed many of my classmates gathered nearby, their faces filled with warm smiles and
encouraging nods. At this, I felt a surge of strength flowing through me, though I still couldn’t imagine how I would
manage the challenges ahead.

Passage 1

・
After school, Oliver and his best friend Emily wandered the street and came across a cartoonist drawing
portraits. The cartoonist turned a few quick curve lines from his pen into a picture that looked like it came from a
comic book — the head twice the size of body and the ears nearly as big as heads, which looked funny as cartoons
should.
Oliver wished he could draw like the cartoonist. Emily said he was a good artist and advised him to draw a
cartoon for the art fair. That evening, Oliver flipped through his sketchbook ( 素描簿). He was good at realistic
pictures of space shuttles and race cars, but he wanted to draw cool cartoons. He turned to a fresh page. He found a
photo of a person in a magazine and began to sketch. But it turned out awful.
Over the next two weeks, Oliver practiced hard. He copied superheroes from comic books and famous people
from newspaper cartoons. Gradually he learned some of the secrets: Exaggerate (夸大) the main features. Leave off
parts that aren’t important. Keep everything simple. Soon, he could capture a likeness with a few lines and shapes,
just like the cartoonist. He thought about who to draw for the fair, then had a great idea, and worked on it right away.
He was so happy with his creation that he thought he might win first prize.
The art fair turned the school into a museum. When Oliver arrived, he rushed to find his drawing and saw a
ribbon on it. Before checking the ribbon, he noticed Emily beside him, her eyes puffy and red. She realized Oliver
had drawn her and thought it was the ugliest picture ever. Oliver froze, his stomach dropping. Emily didn’t speak to
him the rest of the day. That night, Oliver tossed and turned, finally understanding Emily’s feelings. He knew he
needed to apologize and explain, hoping for her forgiveness.

I was cycling in rural Turkey — I couldn’t tell you where. My plan that day was to ride until I reached a village
with somewhere I could stay. If that didn’t work out, I needed to get to the next town before sunset since that was the
only spot I could really count on for a bed. Out there, finding anywhere to stay wasn’t exactly easy.
I was cycling quickly downhill, probably too fast for a gravel (碎石) road. I was riding around a blind corner
when a car came screaming around the bend. As soon as I saw it, it was in front of me. The next thing I remember is
lying in the middle of the road with the cylinder of my bike handle stuck in my leg, blood everywhere.
A week before that I had met Bryan, a bike tourist who’d ridden through more than 40 countries and settled in
Turkey. I had his number because, like countless bike tourists before me, he’d let me stay the night in his small
apartment in Antalya.
After I was discharged from hospital — a rural Turkish hospital in a town I didn’t even know the name of —
I sat outside in a wheelchair, not knowing the exact state of my injury. I thought about calling everyone besides Bryan
— Dad, Mum, best friend — but none of them could help. The only local number in my phone was Bryan’s.
I don’t remember much about the phone call. I know it wasn’t a simple request to stay a few more nights. I
essentially asked Bryan to be my carer for an indefinite period. I didn’t know anyone else in Turkey and couldn’t
walk. What I do remember is that the call was easy. There was no negotiation, just a welcoming: “Sure thing.”

Through the window, Anqi watched her classmates running and laughing across the playground. They were folding
and flying paper planes. Actually, they were training for Paper Airplane Competition — one of the student activities
in this term. Anqi wanted to join them but she was afraid of being laughed at, because she couldn’t even make a
plane.
Two weeks had passed since Anqi joined this class, but she still felt like an outsider. Though Chinese by birth, she
spent her first twelve years in Chicago, because her father was at the University of Chicago to obtain the doctoral
and postdoctoral degrees for eight years and stayed in Chicago for another four years due to coronavirus pandemic.
So when she returned to China with parents, she had to adapt to the new environment, but obviously she didn’t fit in
well.
Anqi had almost no friends but a girl named Xiao Yan quietly paid attention to her. Xiao Yan was the “Plane
Princess” of the class for her magic fingers could transform any plain paper into wonderful planes. She saw Anqi’s
struggle and wanted to offer a hand but she was a little shy herself. Besides, XiaoYan was unconfident for her poor
English especially when she witnessed how good Anqi’s English was. She hoped her English was as good as Anqi’s
so that she could take part in the contest — Tell Chinese Stories in English.
Another day, as classmates raced to fly the planes, Anqi was folding a paper, nervously copying what she had
seen. Finally, she made something like a plane. She ran outside to fly it, hoping it would glide (滑行) for a distance.
Sadly, the “plane” dropped quickly, which happened to be seen by some classmates. Extremely embarrassed, Anqi
ran away and cried, “Why can’t I even fold a paper airplane properly?”

Passage 1

・
On a hot afternoon, I was driving home when I saw an old lady walking slowly along the roadside, carrying a
heavy bag of groceries and leaning on her walker. I had seen her a few times before, and each time I felt guilty for
not stopping to help. But this time, I pulled over and rolled down my window. “Do you need a ride?” I asked. “Let
me help with your groceries,” I said, loading her walker and bag into the trunk before assisting her into the passenger
seat.
“Thank you, kid,” she replied. She introduced herself as Ida, a cashier at a nearby store who had missed her
usual bus. During the drive, she waved to some homeless people under a bridge and cheerfully invited them to her
“pasta night”. I was touched by her kindness.
We soon entered an unfamiliar area. The sun was going down, and I started to feel uneasy. When Ida finally
pointed to her home — an old apartment building, my heart sank: a group of young men in their early 20s was
gathering at the entrance. Some smoked, others sat on motorcycles, and one in a hoodie (连帽衫) stared at me with
a smile that felt threatening. “Troublemakers”, I thought to myself.
I was getting more and more worried. Still, I parked the car at the place she directed and opened the trunk. Ida
asked that hoodie boy to help with her groceries. She thanked me and I quickly drove away.
A few minutes later, I noticed a motorcycle following me. I recognized the rider. It was the hoodie guy from
earlier. My heart raced as he gestured for me to pull over. I tried to speed up, but he stayed closer. Thinking I might
call the police for help, I stopped my car and intended to reach for the cell phone in my purse, only to find it was
gone “She stole it” I yelled in frustration. Then, I noticed out of the corner of my eye that a purse was on the floor of
my car. Yes, there was a purse, but it wasn’t mine.

・
One day, my husband mentioned that peaceful lake at the top of a mountain again, a place he had long desired to
visit for years. It was said to be surrounded by green trees and beautiful flowers, a perfect place to escape the busy
city life. So he suggested that we go hiking to reach it the next day.
The hiking track was a 15-kilometer trip and rated as a difficult one. The moment I heard this, my heart sank
and I felt anxious. I feared I would not have enough energy to get to the top. I had not been active recently, and I
could not get rid of the thought that people’s energy and motivation would naturally decline with age.
Nevertheless, eager to realize his dream, we packed our bags and set off early the next morning. The track was
gentle at first, winding through tall pine trees. We walked slowly, chatting and laughing while enjoying the peaceful
beauty of nature. But as we climbed higher, the track became rough and upward, and our steps slowed down gradually.
Soon my legs ached badly, and my breath grew short and heavy. I had to stop from time to time to rest, with my heart
beating fast.
Halfway up the mountain, we met a couple who chose to turn back, worn out by the tough track. The
disappointment on my husband’s face made me face the doubts hidden in my heart. Instead of giving up, a strong
will rose in me, and the thought of quitting disappeared at that time. I tried to keep going step by step.
As we went on, I no longer focused on the hike’s difficulty. Instead, I began to enjoy the beautiful scenery
around me. The pressure of daily life went away in the quiet wild. My husband and I chatted as we climbed, and I
felt deep gratitude for the warm comfort of being with him.

・
Downhill All the Way
It was 4:00 in the morning. Earlier, about a dozen of us, dressed in the jackets and pants provided by the tour
company, were picked up at our hotel and driven to a location 6,500 feet above sea level. We were now gathered at
the crater (火山口) of a volcano.
My husband and I had signed up for the Maui Downhill. He encouraged me to challenge myself and assured
me it wouldn’t matter that I hadn’t been on a bike since I was fifteen.
The man leading the tour called out instructions to our group. We were to ride behind him.
“Your bike goes where your eyes go,” he told us.
True to its name, this was a downhill ride. It didn’t demand strength, but it did require a comfort level on the
bike, which I quickly determined I didn’t have.
One by one, we climbed on our bikes and began following our leader down the volcano’s winding road. But I
wasn’t used to this kind of road and was trying to steer (引导) the front tire into each turn, grasping the handlebars
with shaky hands. Afraid to go faster and fall down the cliff (悬崖), I quickly fell behind. My husband hung back to
keep an eye on me, which only added to the pressure I felt.
I was the kid who hated gym class. Team sports and relay races made me anxious that I’d cause my side to
lose. As an adult, I’d always been careful to stay in my lane and stick to my strengths. I’d mostly managed to avoid
embarrassing situations where I appeared weak or foolish and missed many adventures.
Then our leader waved us all to a stop at the side of the road to allow a line of cars to pass. Traffic, this
early? On a volcano? Why on earth had I agreed to this ride?
“We ride as fast as the slowest rider,” he announced. “If anyone here feels uncomfortable or feels like they
can’t keep up, raise your hand.”

・
Jimmy and Tommy, good friends and adventure fans, decided to explore an unknown forest they had heard of
from local old tales. After weeks of planning and gathering supplies, they set off, excited yet slightly nervous.
As they entered the forest, they were struck by its breathtaking beauty. Birds chirped, and leaves rustled in the
gentle wind. They walked along a narrow path, amazed at the colorful flowers and occasional small animals running
quickly through the bushes.
Deeper in the forest, they met an elderly hunter with a weather-beaten face. He held a rifle gun in his hands, a
knife and a roll of ropes hanging on his waist, and a backpack on his back. He looked at them with concern. “Young
men,” he asked, “where are you headed?”
“We’re exploring this forest,” Jimmy replied excitedly. “We’ve heard so many stories about it.”
The hunter nodded slowly. “It’s beautiful, but also dangerous. There are hidden dangers and animals that can
harm you. You’d better turn back while you still can.” After walking several steps, he turned around and added, “By
the way, you can go to my cottage nearby if you need any help.”
But Jimmy and Tommy were too excited to follow these words. They thanked him politely and continued on,
confident of their abilities.
As the day went on, the forest became more challenging. The path disappeared, and they had to find their way
through thick bushes. And then, Dark clouds gathered, and the wind picked up, making the bushes rustle more loudly.
The air grew colder, and the forest sounds became strange and scary. They realized they had underestimated the
forest’s complexity.
Suddenly, Tommy fell into a trap set for catching wild animals, hurting his ankle. He cried out in pain, and
Jimmy rushed to the edge. “Are you okay?” he asked anxiously.
“I think I twisted (扭伤) my ankle,” Tommy replied, “I can’t climb out on my own.”
Jimmy tried to help with a stick, but the hole was too deep. They were lost, and Jimmy didn’t know what to
do next.

・
On a night many years ago, I boarded a train from Zhanjiang to Guangzhou, sharing a four-person soft sleeper
compartment (车厢隔间). The journey was over eight hours long. When I entered the small compartment, an elegant
woman in her sixties was already seated inside. Her elegant behavior and neat clothing suggested a well-educated
background. We communicated, and I learned she was the editor of a Guangzhou magazine who had asthma (哮喘).
We quickly connected, hoping for a peaceful journey.
Our hopes disappeared when a middle-aged woman entered noisily. Her loud voice and striking orange
stockings immediately changed the compartment’s atmosphere. The previously harmonious atmosphere in the
compartment suddenly turned stiff and cold. She unpacked snacks, offering them generously. When we declined, she
began cracking sunflower seeds, dropping shells on the floor and enjoyed snacks. Instantly, the smell of sweet, sour,
salty, and spicy treats mixed together unpleasantly. The editor frowned, clearly unhappy.
Not long after the train started moving, the ticket inspector entered. As per procedure, he asked each passenger
for their identification. I presented my passport, and the editor showed her ID card. The middle-aged woman, however,
searched her large handbag but couldn’t find her ID.The newcomer couldn’t provide identification, raising our
doubts. Stories of train thefts flashed through my mind, and thinking the money in my backpack, I grew uneasy.
Anxious, the editor told the inspector to change a compartment for her due to safety concerns. She complained,
“That woman who came in late has no identification. Nobody knows who she is. The world is a dangerous place
nowadays, and I don’t want to take the risk!” The inspector refused, “Since all the other rooms are full, it’s not
possible to change.”
It was very quiet at the time, and every word of their conversation clearly reached our compartment. I felt
terribly embarrassed. Looking at the woman, she seemed completely unbothered, as if the discussion had nothing to
do with her.

・
When the announcement about the school play tryouts echoed through the classroom, my pen slipped from
my hand. Ms. Carter, our drama teacher, smiled warmly. “This year’s play is The Star Seeker — about a young
astronomer who finds her courage,” she said, her eyes scanning the room.
I stared at my desk, fingers twisting the corner of my notebook. Public speaking made my throat tight; acting
in front of the whole school felt impossible. But the story’s title lingered in my mind. I’d always loved stars —
spending nights in my backyard, mapping constellations with a tattered guidebook my dad gave me.
“Anyone interested?” Ms. Carter asked. Mia, who sat beside me, nudged my arm. “You’d be perfect,” she
whispered. I shook my head, but when the sign-up sheet came around, my hand moved on its own. My name, small
and shaky, joined the list.
Tryouts were held in the auditorium after school. I stood backstage, reciting my lines over and over: “The stars
are not just lights — they’re stories.” When my turn came, I stepped into the spotlight. The room blurred. I opened
my mouth, but the words vanished. “I... I can’t,” I mumbled, fleeing to the exit.
Mia found me sitting on the steps, staring at the sky. “You ran before the stars could shine,” she said, sitting
down. I pulled out my star guide, pointing to a dim constellation. “That’s Cassiopeia. No one notices her, but she’s
always there.” Mia traced the pattern with her finger. “Maybe she’s just waiting for someone to look.”

・
It all began one ordinary afternoon in world history class when Mrs. Bartlett announced a new group project.
We were asked to create a newspaper about the culture we were studying.
On a piece of paper, we each wrote down the names of three friends we hoped to work with. After collecting
all the requests, Mrs. B said she would consider our choices and announce the groups the next day. I had no doubt
that I would be with my best friend. We had chosen each other.
The next day, after the bell rang, Mrs. B called for our attention and started to read out the group lists. When
she reached group three, my best friend’s name was called, followed by three others—but not mine. There had to be
some mistakes!
Then I heard my name in the last group—with Linn, who always kept to herself, Marsha, who had just
transferred to our school from South Africa, and Jeremy, who spoke typical Japanese English!
Tears welled up in my eyes. How could I face being in a group with “the invisible”! I just wanted to be with
my friends.
Fighting back tears, I walked up to Mrs. B She seemed to know what I was going to say. I was determined to
convince her I should be in the “good” group. “Why?” I started.
She gently placed a hand on my shoulder, “I know what you want, Karina,” she said, “but your group needs
you. I’m counting on you to help them do the job well. Only you can.” She looked into my eyes and continued, “Get
to know them, and you might be surprised at what they can do.”
I was stunned, humbled, and deeply moved. “So, will you help them?” she asked. “Since you trust me, let me
try,” I replied.
