The Loser
When Jae came home from school, he couldn’t find his keys. What now? he thought. His parents wouldn’t be
home for an hour. Just then, Ron, the man who lived next door, walked past.
Jae had never really talked to Ron, but he knew Ron was a friend of his father. They had played cards together
many times. I can’t just sit out here, Jae mumbled to himself. Jae marched to Ron’s door and knocked. When it
opened, Jae said, “Hi, Ron, I’ve lost my keys, and my parents aren’t home, could I wait here with you?” “Sure,”
Ron said. Inside, Jae saw a baseball on a shelf.
Ron smiled when he saw Jae looking at it. “That one was signed by the ‘87 Minnesota Twins, right after the
World Series,” he said. “Dad takes me to their games sometimes,” Jae said, “Where did you get this?” “I was a
professional referee for thirty years,” Ron answered. Jae’s eyes widened as he asked, “A referee? Did you meet....”
He began to shoot questions. Grinning(咧嘴笑), Ron told Jae about past players, the things they said and their
charms.
When it was time for Jae to leave, he requested, “Can I come again sometime?” “Sure,” Ron smiled.
Wow, losing my keys turned out okay, Jae thought as he walked home. The next day at school, Jae searched
his desk, “Oh, no. Not again!” he complained.“ Need help?” asked his classmate Martina. She was new in school.
“Yes, my dinosaur book is missing,” Jae replied.
“Do you want to borrow mine?” asked Martina, she showed him a dinosaur encyclopedia(百科全书). “That’s
the same book as I use!” Jae exclaimed. “Are you into dinosaur, too?” “Yeah,” said Martina. “What’s your
favorite?” “Have you heard of ...?” They kept talking.
After school, Jae and Martina went to the park to play catch with Jae’s favorite baseball. Martina’s a good
playmate and pretty cool, Jae thought as he went home.

【答案】
The next Saturday morning, Jae wanted to do some throwing drills, but he couldn’t find his baseball. “Can we
go back to the park to look for my baseball? ” Jae asked his mom. At the park, they saw a homeless dog playing
with something. It was Jae’s baseball. “Mom, look!” Jae said. “Doesn’t he look like he needs a home? ” His mother
smiled. “Yes, he does” she said. “He’ll be your responsibility, though. ” Jae nodded excitedly and picked him up.
Walking home with the stray puppy (流浪狗), Jae was lost in thought, reflecting on the past week. “What an
amazing week!” Jae thought to himself. I lost my keys, my book, and my baseball, but every time I lost something,I
got a friend.Sometimes other people help Jae, and sometimes Jae helps others. He makes friends because he and the
people around him love to help others.

I was nineteen years old the first time I saw my own true character. At least I can say that my true characterchanged that day.
For about a year, my voyage to and from work each day included a ten-minute walk through the heart of
downtown Toronto. As with most large cities, the homeless population of Toronto often gathered on down-town
corners, asking pedestrians (行人) for their spare change. Like most busy citizens, I learned to ignore the nameless
faces who begged me for money each day. In my eyes, they are on the streets because they choose to be.
I remember how particularly cold the weather had been that day. I passed the usual crowd of homeless
beggars, ignored all of them, and continued walking. As I crossed an intersection (交叉路口), I saw him sitting
against a building, holding a white cup in front of him. I heard his shaky voice target me as I sped past him.
“Spare some change?” he asked.
I didn’t even bother looking up at his nameless face. “I have no money on me,” I said quickly.
Looking back now, I feel as though fate had set out that day to teach me a lesson. Just a few feet past him, I
slipped on the icy road. I lay on the ground for several moments wondering if I had broken my leg. Then I heard a
familiar voice only inches above me.
“Are you all right?” he asked.
I knew immediately that this was the man I had just rushed past. I saw the smooth, sympathetic look in his
eyes.
I held his hand as I struggled to get to my feet. He held my arm as I hobbled (跛行) to the nearby bus stop.
The pain in my leg told me that I needed an X-ray.
“My name is Mike,” he said. “You really shouldn’t try walking on that leg. You really need to get it checked
by a doctor,” he said with deep concern.
“This bus goes past the hospital,” I said quickly, pointing to the bus sign above me.

【答案】
Mike paused, and a look of sudden realization crossed his face. He quickly reached into his pocket and pulledout his small white cup. After counting the mere change carefully in it, he held all out toward me, his eyes
brimming with care and sincerity. At that moment, an embarrassed silence struck for a moment. I looked up at him
in shock. “I know you have no change,” he said with a smiling face, “but I think there’s just enough here for you to
take the bus.” I was overwhelmed with guilt as I remembered the lie I had told him.
I turned away from his offering hand and reached for my purse. I felt Mike’s eyes fixed on me. I counted out
enough money for me to take the bus to the hospital and then offered him the rest. “Thank you,” he said quietly. It
was by far the most heartfelt “thank-you” I had heard in my life. He clung to his cup of change, cherishing it as if it
were the first gift he had received. Despite his gratitude, I didn’t feel relieved. A half cup of change seemed too
small a gift for the man who gave a name to every nameless face I’ve ever seen.

The first of June, the King family was going on holiday tomorrow. The girls no longer had to do housework
for the family, so there would be three months’ free time for them, and all the girls cheered up, jumping up and
down with excitement. “Vacation, finally!” shouted Meg, coming home to find Jo already lying on the sofa. They
started to plan what they would do on the vacation. All the girls reached an agreement that they would not do
anything for a while, but play all the time and rest if their mother didn’t mind. “May we all try what we want to do,Mother?” asked Meg. Mrs March agreed to the plan and said they could try the experiment for a week. “It will be
wonderful, I’m sure,” said Meg. “Fun forever, and no work!” cried Jo.
The next morning, Meg spent the morning with a friend and the afternoon reading in the apple tree. Jo pulled
all her toys out of her closet but then left them to play some music. Amy put on her best dress and went outside to
draw, hoping someone would notice the beautiful young artist. No one appeared, so she went for a walk, got caught
in the rain, and came home dripping.
In the evening, they all assured their mother the experiment was going well. She smiled, said nothing, and did
her work, keeping their home pleasant and running smoothly.
The week seemed to get longer and longer with nothing much to do, and it affected all three girls. Meg found
time hanging heavily and read till her eyes hurt and she was sick of books. Jo sometimes suddenly shook her doll
and shouted at it. Amy was quite bored, for she didn’t like dolls or reading, and she couldn’t draw all the time. By
Friday the girls were glad that it was nearly over, but no one would admit that they were tired of the experiment.
On Saturday morning, the girls got up to find no breakfast and no mother to be seen.

【答案】
Meg ran through the entire house only to find a note left by mother saying that she took a vacation today and
telling the girls to look after themselves. Indeed, the girls were all pleased to have something useful to do. Soon, the
girls were engaged in doing housework. Meg was responsible for cooking meals while Jo for sweeping the floor,
and Amy was occupied with tidying the rooms. After a whole day of tiring work, the girls all felt a sense of
achievement seeing their clean and tidy house.
They couldn’t wait to share with their mother what they had done today and how wonderful the day was. “Do
you want another week of the experiment?” asked Mrs March. All the girls replied determinedly in a chorus
of “no”. It finally dawned on them that their little burdens seemed heavy but would grow lighter as they learned to
carry them. Work keeps people from boredom and mischief, is good for health and spirits, and gives them a sense
of power and independence. It is work that makes the world better.

James Selton was one of the naughtiest boys in the village. He would rarely pass people in the street without
being guilty of some sort of abuse. If a person were well dressed he would cry out, “Dandy(花花公子)!” If a
person’s clothes were dirty or torn, he would throw stones at him to annoy him .
One afternoon, a stranger passed through the village. His dress neat and clean, he carried a cane in his hand, on
the end of which was a bag, and he wore an elegant hat. Spotting the stranger, James winked to his playmates, and
said, “Now for some fun!” He then silently reached the stranger from behind, and, knocking off his hat, ran away.
The man turned and saw him, but James was out of hearing before he could speak.
The stranger put on his hat, and went on his way. Again James approached; but this time, the man caught him
by the arm, and held him fast. However, he contented himself with looking James a moment in the face, and then
pushed him away. Free again, he began to throw at the stranger with dirt and stones. But he was frightened when
he saw the man struck on the head by a brick, and badly hurt.
All the boys now ran away, and James sneaked across the fields to his home.
As he drew near the house, his sister Caroline came out to meet him, holding up a delicate gold chain and
some new books for him to see. She told James, as fast as she could talk, that their uncle, who had been away
several years, came home, and was now in the house with beautiful presents for the whole family; that he had left
his carriage at the hotel a mile off, and walked here to surprise his brother, their father. She said that on his waysome wicked boys threw stones at him, and hit him just over the eye, and that mother had bound up the wound.

【答案】
“But, James, what makes you look so pale?” asked Caroline, changing her tone. James tried to hide his fear
but failed and then gave up because his guilty conscience weighed heavily on him. His rough actions had led to
someone getting hurt and the consequences were beginning to sink in. Guilt came at him, and he struggled to enjoy
the presents his sister was showing him. Seeing the nervous expression on James’ face, Caroline hurried inside the
house to tell everybody what happened.
His uncle went up, kindly saying, “James, will you not welcome me?” The man’s voice was gentle, but there
was a hint of disappointment in his eyes. James felt an attack of shame as he realized the pain and worry that he had
caused his family. He looked into his uncle’s eyes and saw forgiveness, but he knew he would have to make
amends for his thoughtless behavior. From that day on, James resolved to change his ways and become a better,
more considerate person.

It had been a long, tiring day because 48-year-old taxi driver Carl had worked for 8 hours. He’d been picking
up and dropping off passengers the whole day. He wanted to get home then, but he noticed a panicky (恐慌
的)woman getting off a taxi with a child in her arms.
“Why is she shouting at the driver?” Carl slowed down near them. He realized that the woman was begging
the driver not to leave her there. The boy was having difficulty breathing, and his arms and legs were shaking
uncontrollably. Carl realized the boy was having a seizure (疾病发作)and asked the woman to get into his taxi.
Carl drove as fast as he could. The hospital was several miles away, so he had to race against time to save the
boy. Meanwhile, he grew concerned about why the previous driver had dropped them off during such an
emergency. The woman told Carl that she and her four-year-old son, Tyler, returned from the park. She told the
driver she would pay him once she got home because she didn’t take her purse. But then her son suddenly had a
seizure, so she asked the driver to take them to the hospital instead. But the driver refused.
Half an hour later, they arrived at the hospital. Tyler was rushed inside for treatment as his mother waited
outside the ward, crying. Carl was hungry and tired but stayed back. An hour later, the doctor said, “Tyler is out of
danger now. But it could have been fatal (致命的)if you hadn’t made it here on time.”
Mrs Thomas immediately looked at Carl and cried in tears, thanking Carl for saving her son’s life. Carl was
glad Tyler was out of danger. Later, he dropped them off at home, and when Mrs Thomas came out to pay him, he
refused. “I have a policy. NO FARES for those making trips to the hospital!” said Carl “I just did what any good
human being would do. And please convey my regards to Tyler!” Thomas was moved by his kindness. Carl never
changed his policy of dropping off passengers at hospitals for free.

One morning this summer holiday, I was running on the road when I saw an elderly foreign lady waving her
phone at me, speaking to me in a foreign language. Obviously, she didn’t speak English at all. When I listened to
her more carefully, I found she was speaking German. She was clearly lost and trying to walk to the house where
she lived. She showed me screen shots of maps on her phone as if she wanted me to help her find her way home.
Actually, I learned some German in my spare time because our school will have German classes the next term.
However, I was so poor at it that it was almost useless in practice.
I studied nearby and I knew my classmate, Lisa, who was good at speaking German. So I decided to telephone
her. “Hi, Lisa. I came across a German lady. Do you have time to come and act as a translator now?” I said and then
sent her my location, Unfortunately, Lisa answered, “Sorry, Belle. I’m shopping now. I can reach your place in
about half an hour.” Hearing that, I had to tell her that I could manage myself.
Suddenly, an idea flashed through my mind. I downloaded a translation app and used the voice function to
translate what the lady said into English. Just in this way, I learned that she came here to visit her daughter who was
new to the city to teach. And I also determined the address she needed to get to. It was not far from here to her
house, so I offered to walk with her to her destination. She was greatly grateful to me and kept saying sorry for
taking my time.
When we got to the house, her daughter just came back. She was as touched by my kindness as her mother. I
kept reminding her that it was no trouble for me, and that I only intend-ed to make sure her mother got there safely.
Walking with the lady was more rewarding than running alone. Despite having to rely on technology to
communicate due to the language barrier, I felt lucky to have been able to help her. When I left, I couldn’t wait to
share the wonderful experience with Lisa.

【答案】
No sooner had I picked up my phone than Lisa called me. “Belle, How is it going? Do you still need my
help?” Lisa asked. “Thanks, Lisa. Everything is OK. And I’d like to tell you about it,” I said. I told her exactly what
had happened, and specifically described how I had solved the problem. Lisa praised me for my quick wit. Then I
asked her to teach me German in case I needed it later. She promised. By the end of the holiday, I could have
already communicated with her in some simple German words. So I was ready for the new term with confidence.
When the German teacher entered the classroom in the new term, I felt I’d seen her somewhere before. What
amazed me was that she came over to me, saying, “Glad to see you again. I’m Florence.” I was surprised to find
that she was the daughter of the lady that I had helped during the holiday. What a fantastic fate! As our new foreign
teacher, Florence was patient and considerate. We all respected her and took every lesson seriously. I even made
friends with her mother, so I had more opportunities to practise speaking German. I was resolved to visit Germany
the next summer holiday.

The Christmas I will never forget happened when I was 9. I believed in Santa with all my heart. How could I
not when I received everything I wished for.
On December 1st, Mum would announce, It's time. Hearing those words, we all knew it was time to write our
letters to Santa. One day I asked Mum why we always wrote our letters on December 1st. She said because so
many kids were writing letters to Santa, he needed time to read them and make all the toys the kids wanted. Once
our letters were finished, Mum would put them in her purse and mail them the next day.
Christmas Eve finally arrived. We were all so excited. We did our Christmas Eve traditions. Daddy read us
“The Night Before Christmas” story. Then it was time for sleep. I had such a good feeling about Christmas this
year. It was difficult to fall asleep. But sleep finally came and so did Christmas morning. I woke up hearing my
brothers yelling. Jimmy came running and jumping on my bed. “Santa's been here, sister! Let's open presents!”
We ran down the stairs. Our eyes were glowing like wildfire as we eyed over the presents under the tree. My
brothers and I quickly snuggled (依偎)among the packages. We all watched as each person unwrapped a gift. I kept
watching as my brothers unwrapped gifts. My dad didn't hand me any package. “This year you are going to be the
last to get your presents because you are the oldest,” he declared. I didn't think anything of it, so I whispered “OK.”
One by one all of the packages had been opened. There was none left. I couldn't understand. I had been so
good this year. Tears began sliding down my cheeks. I ran up to my room. My mum went up the stairs for me to
come back down. Dad wanted to talk to me. Sobbing, I slowly made me way back.

【答案】
Dad signed to me to follow him. As we neared the back door, I saw my mum holding a handsome black dog
with deep brown eyes. I was frozen like an ice cube. Then I ran to my dad, jumped into his arms and kissed him.
My mum approached us and wrapped her loving arms around us, joining in our happy tears of joy. I had never been
so happy in all my 9 years as I was at that moment.
The dog named Sam was my only gift that year. But I got the best gift. The memory of that Christmas stayed
with me all these years. My best friend Sam lived to the old age of 16. I never had children. I am old and weak now
and losing my eyesight, but I still have such precious memories of past Christmas with my family. I sit in my rocker
on cold winter nights during the holiday seasons and picture my childhood home with its charming Christmas tree
and old chimney.

When I was little, I lived in a house with a beautiful garden full of all kinds of flowers, and roses were the
most beautiful of them. There was nothing I enjoyed more than sitting in the garden with my mother as she readstories to me. When I was in primary school and old enough to read, I enjoyed reading stories aloud to her.
I will never forget one day when I was in the third grade. I had been picked to be the princess in the school
play, and for weeks my mother had rehearsed my lines so hard with me. But no matter how easily I acted at home,
as soon as I stepped onstage, every word disappeared from my head. Finally, my teacher took me aside. She
explained that she had written a narrator’s part to the play, and asked me to change roles. Her word, kindly
expressed, still hurt, especially when I saw my part go to another girl.
I didn’t tell my mother what had happened when I went home after school that day. But she sensed my pain.
Instead of suggesting we practice my lines, she asked if I wanted to take a walk in the garden.
It was May and roses were blossoming and, under the trees, we could also see yellow dandelions in the grass,
as if a painter had painted our garden with red, yellow and green. I watched my mother casually bend down by one
dandelion. “I think I’m going to dig up all these weeds,” she said, pulling it up by its roots. “From now on, we’ll
have only roses in this garden.”
“But I like dandelions,” I protested. “All flowers are beautiful — even dandelions.”
My mother looked at me seriously. “Yes, every flower is beautiful in its own way, isn’t it?” She asked
thoughtfully. I nodded, pleased that I had won her over. “And that is true of people too,” she added. “Not everyone
can be a princess, but there is no shame in that.” Relieved that she had guessed my pain, I started to cry as I told her
what had happened. She listened and smiled reassuringly.

【答案】
“But you will be a beautiful narrator,” she said, reminding me how much I loved to read stories aloud to her.
“The narrator’s part is just as important as the part of a princess.” Her wise words inspired me with courage and
confidence. But on the evening of the performance, I suddenly felt nervous backstage again. My teacher came overto me. “Your mother asked me to give you this,” she said, handing me a dandelion. Looking at it, I knew my mother
was out there for me, which calmed me down.
After the play, I took home the flower. My mother made it into a dried flower and put it into a glass bottle.
Every time I see it, I am reminded of this unforgettable experience. I have taken part in many school plays, tried
different roles and made many speeches ever since. Gradually, I’ve become really good at performing and public
speaking, seldom feeling nervous onstage now. For this, I am forever grateful to my mother, who have made me
what I am today.
