Four astronauts headed to the International Space Station (ISS) on Sunday where they will oversee the
arrivals of two new rocketships during their half- year stay.
SpaceX’s Falcon rocket was launched from Kennedy Space Center, carrying NASA’s Matthew Dominick,
Michael Barratt and Jeanette Epps and Russia’s Alexander Grebenkin. The astronauts should reach the orbiting lab
on Tuesday. They will replace a crew from the US, Denmark, Japan and Russia, who have been there since August.
“When are you getting here already?” space station commander Andreas Mogensen asked via Twitter, after
three days of delay due to high wind. SpaceX Launch Control termed it “fashionably late”. There was almost
another postponement Sunday night. A small leak in the seal of the SpaceX capsule’s hatch caused a last- minute
flurry (忙乱) of reviews, but it was thought safe for the whole mission.
The new crew’s six- month stay includes the arrival of two rocketships ordered by NASA.Boeing’s new
Starliner capsule with test pilots is due in late April. A month or two later, Sierra Space’s Dream Chaser, a mini
shuttle, should arrive. It is for delivering supplies to the station, but not passengers yet.
Epps, who is from New York, is the second Black woman assigned to a long station mission. She said before
the flight that she was especially proud to be a role model for girls, especially for Black girls, demonstrating thatspaceflight “is an option for them, and that this is not just for other people”.
Also new to space are Dominick, a Navy pilot, and Grebenkin, a former Russian military officer. Barratt, a
doctor on his third mission, is the oldest full- time astronaut to fly in space. He turns 65 in April. As for his age, he
said before the flight, “As long as we stay healthy and fit and engaged, we’re good to fly.”
24.Why were the four astronauts sent to the ISS?
A.To train test pilots for Starliner. B.To monitor the new rocketships.
C.To deliver supplies to the station. D.To replace the crew on the station.
25.What delayed the astronauts’ arrival?
A.The leak in the capsule. B.Bad weather conditions.
C.An interview with the media. D.Repair work on the rocket.
26.What do we know about Dominick?
A.He worked as an officer in the army. B.He was a full- time astronaut from Russia.
C.He performed the task for the first time. D.He was in charge of the space program.
27.What do Epps’ words suggest?
A.Females are capable of investigating space.
B.Age is a decisive factor in space tasks.
C.Her work makes her a role model for girls.
D.Space technology is a great challenge for girls.

Hair that is tightly coiled(盘绕) offers the best protection against the sun’s potentially damaging rays, which
could explain why this trait evolved in early humans in Africa and straighter hair emerged as some humans moved
into cooler areas.
It has long been suggested that the reason our body hair became so fine that it is sometimes barely visible,
while our scalp hair remained thick, is to prevent our heads from overheating in the sun. In our bipedal(双足行走
的) ancestors, the beneficial shading effect of head hair may have outweighed its insulating effect.
Tina Lasisi at Penn State University wondered if the type of hair on a person’s head also makes a difference.
To learn more, Lasisi and her colleagues put three different wigs(假发) on a thermal manikin—a model of the
human body with heaters and sensors that is used to measure the thermal effects of clothes. One of the three wigs
was straight, one had moderate curls(卷) and one had tight curls. Lasisi says the tightly coiled wig was within the
range of curl found in people of recent African ancestry.
The team found that the hair’s type made a big difference to how much heat the head of the manikin gainedfrom simulated sunshine at 30℃. The head with a straight wig gained less than half as much heat as a control head
with no wig. The head wearing the moderately curled wig gained around a quarter as much heat and the head with
the tightly curled wig gained less than a tenth as much as the no-wig control.
The researchers think that the curls reduce how much heat reaches the skin by increasing the gap between it
and the hair surface. Making straight hair longer doesn’t achieve this because it lies flat, says Lasisi.
The team also found when wetting the manikins to simulate sweat, the head with no wig lost twice as much
heat via evaporation as those with the wigs. However, having any head hair more than halves the amount of sweat
required to prevent the head from gaining heat, with tightly coiled hair reducing this more than moderately curled
or straight hair, the result shows.
“Any mechanism that could help cool the body, and at the same time save precious water, would definitely
have been acted on strongly by natural selection,” says Joseph Graves at North Carolina Agricultural &
Technical State University. The study findings are important because they could help change some people’s
prejudiced views, says Graves.
28.What does the underlined word “trait” in Paragraph 1 mean?
A.Curl. B.Feature. C.Situation. D.Essence.
29.What will Tina Lasisi probably agree with?
A.The three wigs were made of hair from different races.
B.The head with no wig gained the least amount of heat from the sun.
C.Wearing long straight hair could reduce the heat reaching the skin.
D.The head without a wig had the best cooling effect of sweating.
30.For what purpose was the research carried out?
A.To gain insight into early humans. B.To prove all races are born equal.
C.To clarify a question. D.To learn about the use of wigs.
31.What might be the best title of the passage?
A.Curly Hair Protects Us from the Sun B.Curly Hair Evolves into Straight Hair
C.Natural Selection Is What Really CountsD.A Study Changes Prejudiced Views
D
When Alex Lin was 11, he read an article about electronic waste, or e- waste, and its harmful effects due to
toxic substances like mercury and lead (铅). Concerned, he discussed the issue with his classmates from the
Westerly Innovations Network (WIN), an organization they formed to solve community problems.
To address the e-waste issue, Alex and his friends began by educating themselves on the chemicals in e-waste and their effects on humans. They then conducted a survey to assess the situation in their town and
discovered a significant lack of awareness about e-waste. Disturbed by their findings, including a case of a man
dumping old computers in his backyard, they decided to act.
They organized a two-day e-waste collection drive at a school parking lot, collecting over21,000 pounds of
e- waste. This included out-of-date computers from the school system. Alex’ team then set up a permanent e-waste
drop-off center for the town and found a responsible company to recycle the waste, ensuring it wouldn’t be shipped
overseas where it could cause harm.
Understanding that reusing is more efficient than recycling, Alex’s team also focused on refurbishing (翻新)
old computers. They persuaded their school to teach students how to refurbish donated computers, and they
distributed 260 computers to students in need, making a direct impact on their education and the environment.
To create a lasting solution, Alex and his team advocated for e-waste legislation ( 立法). After initial
setbacks, they successfully lobbied for (游说) a bill that banned the dumping of e-waste, making Rhode Island the
fourth state to create such legislation. This achievement marked a significant step in promoting safe treatment of e-
waste.
Recognizing e-waste as a global issue, Alex and his friends expanded their project internationally,
establishing WIN teams in Mexico and three African countries. They shipped refurbished media centers to schools
and centers in need, further spreading the message about safe e-waste disposal.
Alex’ work exemplifies how young individuals can lead community efforts to address environmental
challenges, promoting awareness, responsible recycling, and the importance of reusing technology to prevent it
from becoming toxic trash.
32.What was the primary motivation for Alex Lin to get involved with the issue of e-waste?
A.A discussion on e-waste with his classmates from the WIN.
B.His personal need to recycle his old electronic devices.
C.Reading an alarming article about the harmful effects of e- waste.
D.A case of a man dumping old computers in his backyard.
33.How did Alex and his team address the issue of e- waste in their town?
A.By lobbying for e-waste legislation effortlessly.
B.By organizing a collection drive and setting up a drop-off center.
C.By conducting more surveys to raise awareness of their neighborhood.
D.By persuading the local government to handle the e- waste.34.Arrange the following events in the order they occurred in the passage:
a. Alex read an article about e-waste. b. They collected e-waste and set up a drop-off center.
c. Alex advocated for a new e-waste bill. d. WIN was formed.
e. They shipped refurbished computers overseas.
A.d-a-b-c-e B.a-b-c-d-e C.a-c-b-d-e D.d-c-a-b-e
35.What personal qualities does Alex Lin display throughout the story?
A.Curiosity and creativity. B.Leadership and problem- solving skills.
C.Foresight and environmental concern. D.Technical expertise and innovation.

Pursue Your Dreams Today, Not Tomorrow
Have you caught yourself daydreaming about your dreams? We often postpone our dreams, trapped in a
cycle of delay. But why wait? 36 You don’t have to take a huge, life-changing step. You can take minute
steps toward a brighter future. And start right now.
37 If you never try, you’re going to be weighed down by your regrets. You’re always going to
wonder how your life would’ve turned out if you actually took a chance on yourself. Don’t let your future self be
disappointed by your present self.
It doesn’t matter how old you are or how many people have warned you that you’re never going to succeed.
Even the most successful people have had their hesitations about whether they had what it took to make it in their
field. 38 Embrace a mindset of determination, knowing that success is within your reach.
At the end of the day, you need to carve out a path for yourself that will lead to the most satisfaction. If you
allow your fear to get the best of you, you’re never going to forgive yourself. 39 . It’s what you would
encourage your friends to do, so why aren’t you giving yourself that same push?
Sometimes, following your passion means spending a lot of your time each day. It may require making slight
adjustments to your schedule, but you don’t have to sacrifice everything to follow your hearts. Try to strike a
balance between your current life and your dreams. 40 .
Pursue your dreams now, even though that means you might need to break out of your comfort zone, and
even though it means entering the unknown.
A.If things go well, you can gradually make further shifts.
B.Ask yourself what would be worse.
C.Starting small is completely acceptable.D.You need to move past your insecurities and explore your full potential.
E.New opportunities may lead to personal growth.

Training was brutal, as Penny Lee Dean prepared for what would be a record-setting swim-regardless of sex-

While the cold was bone-chilling, 41 it has been essential to her success as a record-breaking
swimmer. An ability to tolerate extreme 42 is one of the advantages that women may have in this sport,
as their distribution of fat is 43 for regulating body temperature in cold water.
Dean believes that any upper hand women might have in open-water swimming over long 44 is
more about mental 45 and the ability to withstand discomfort than about insulation (阻隔). In

In fact, women can outperform or perform 47 to men in a range of competitive events. From
ultrarunning to shooting sports, in some competitions women have the 48 .
Cassio Rippel, the ISSF Athletes Committee Chair, says that while men’s muscles 49 give them
more endurance, women’s lower body mass and lower centre of 50 , on average, allow them better
equilibrium (平衡) control. The rifle events are the most sex-balanced of the three types of shooting events in the
Olympics, according to Rippel.
The Paris Olympics are the first Olympics to have equal numbers of female 51 . This is also an
opportunity to take stock of what gaps in 52 still remain. While much of the science of sex and
performance may be 53 , one thing that’s crystal clear is that more research needs to involve women.

阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。
One day my mother and I were out having a girls’ day, and we decided to go to a seafood restaurant. We got
there just as the lunch rush started, so there was a line to get in. I looked over to the side and spied a very thin lady
with no coat. She was holding a sign that read: “Homeless and hungry. Please help.” I looked around at everyone,
and no one looked like they cared in the least. I knew that if I didn’t do something, I will be regretful forever. I
went over to her and asked if she would like to come out of the cold and get something to eat. She looked for a
second like she was unsure I was talking to her. She put her head down and said in the lowest voice, “Yes.”
I helped her to her feet and walked her up to my mother, who was in line. We stood there together until we
were seated. When the waitress came, she looked at the woman as if she were a disease waiting to attack her. She
asked what we wanted to eat but completely neglected this woman and acted like she didn’t exist. Then the owner
came over and asked if we wanted this woman to sit at our table. I assured her we did. The owner then asked what
her name was, to which I replied that we hadn’t gotten to ask that yet because the waitress had come as soon as we
sat down.
I told the waitress to take the woman’s order and get her a cup of coffee. After the waitress left, we got
talking, and I found out that her name was Judy. She had been released from the army because she had cancer.
When she came back home, she could not find a job because of her poor condition and she lost her house. She was
supposed to get a ride to a shelter, but she missed the bus.
