Frequently Asked Questions about Assessment
Does it matter if my coursework is too long or too short?
The word count for each piece of coursework should be provided on the title page. IOE allows a 10%
margin(差额) on the word limit set for the coursework. For example, if the word limit is 5,000 words, you can
submit an assessment of between 4,500 and 5,500 words. Note that if your work exceeds (超出) the 10% margin, it
will automatically fail.
When is the deadline for coursework assignments?
Final deadlines for coursework submissions are normally 2 calendar months after the end of term in which the
module runs. Coursework deadlines will be published on your programme web-page at the start of the academic
year. The deadline for reports is normally the first working day in September. Note that you MUST submit your
coursework by the deadline and that failure to do so results in automatic fail.
When will I receive the grade and feedback for my coursework?
Your coursework and report are independently marked by two members of staff. Once the markers have
agreed a grade, you will be informed of your results by the programme administrator. We aim to complete this
process within 4 weeks of the submission deadline. Feedback and grades are not guaranteed within 4 weeks for
extended, delayed, or resubmitted coursework. In special circumstances, you may apply for additional time tocomplete your coursework but must submit the evidence proving you are impacted by unforeseen factors. The time
should be not later than two weeks before the original deadline.
If you are in any doubt about the assessment, please approach the programme administrator for details.
21.What results in an automatic fail?
A.Exceeding the word limit. B.Not providing the word count.
C.Missing the coursework deadline. D.Not publishing the coursework.
22.What can you do if you have doubts about the feedback you received?
A.Consult the programme administrator. B.Submit evidence to support your case.
C.Revise your approach based on details. D.Contact the markers who provided the feedback.
23.Where is this text probably taken from?
A.A textbook. B.An exam paper.
C.An academic article. D.A programme handbook.

Time magazine has chosen its 2024 Kid of the Year — and it’s Heman Bekele, a teenager who could change
the way skin cancer is treated.
As a student from Fairfax’s Woodson High School, Bekele divides his time between the classroom and the
lab at Johns Hopkins University, where he’s inventing a soap that could one day treat the deadly disease. “I was
raised under the thought that I could always ask questions, and be as curious as possible,” Bekele said. “ And this
pushed me to the field of science.” Some of Bekele’s earliest memories were seeing farmers work under the terrible
heat with no heat protection from the sun’s UV rays in Ethiopia, where he was born. This was one factor that made
him tackle skin cancer after he moved to the US.
At home, Bekele — who’d entertain himself for hours as a child by mixing together any household products
he could get his hands on and seeing what would happen — began wondering how he could help. “ What’s one
thing that is an internationally impactful idea, something everyone can use, regardless of socioeconomic class?”
Bekele asked himself. “Almost everyone uses soap and water for cleaning. So soap would probably be the best
option.” So Bekele began his deliberate trial- and- error process, which led him to learn about a cream- based skin
cancer treatment called Imiquimod that did produce desired results — but can cost as much as $180 for the
uninsured in America. Inspired by the cream, Bekele designed his affordable soap.
Bekele knew he’d need an actual lab to refine his creation. Bekele applied to — and won— the Minnesota-
based tech company 3M’s Young Scientist Challenge in 2023, securing$25,000 and the title of “America’s TopYoung Scientist”. Now, with the help of Johns Hopkins’ professor and biologist Vito Rebecca, Bekele has been
testing the soap on mice at the university’s lab for almost half a year. The soap still has a long way to go: Testing,
patenting it and getting FDA certification could take a decade. But even then, Bekele will only be 25 years old.
24.What initially inspired Bekele to come up with his idea to cure skin cancer?
A.The farmers’ exposure to the hot sun.
B.His journey from the classroom to the lab.
C.The deadly disease he once suffered from.
D.His being named Time’s Kid of the Year.
25.What do we know about Imiquimod?
A.It was invented by Bekele. B.Bekele proved its side effects.
C.It is effective but expensive. D.Bekele produced it for his soap.
26.Why did Bekele participate in the Young Scientist Challenge?
A.To meet Professor Vito Rebecca. B.To get support to better his soap.
C.To gain the soap patent from 3M. D.To promote ready- made products.
27.What can we learn from Bekele’s story?
A.Thinking and action mean potential success.
B.Success will get personal desires satisfied.
C.Being famous is a great thirst of the young.
D.Geniuses tend to get things done creatively.

Offer a seagull (海鸥) fresh fish and chips, and they’ll take the fish every time. UK researchers have
discovered that, given a choice, seagulls prefer seafood to human-made options.
In fact, finds the study, even seagulls raised on bread and cat food will choose fish. “Our results suggest that,
even when raised on an ‘urban’ diet of foods found only around people, these chicks might be unlikely to seek out
urban foods as adults,” says lead author Emma Inzani, a PhD researcher at the Centre for Ecology and Conservation
in the University of Exeter, UK. “Human- associated foods are often both reliably present and easy to obtain — but
when fish is available they clearly prefer it.”
The team of seagull researchers has previously found that seagulls are more likely to want food that has been
handled by people rather than left alone, but they’re less likely to steal from people who stare them down.
In this latest study,27 herring gulls (银鸥) were raised in captivity (圈养). The birds had all been rescued
after falling off roofs in Cornwall, and were later freed. Half of the chicks had access to food that was 80% breadand cat food, and 20% fish and mussels (贻贝) . The other half of the chicks got the opposite spread.
At regular intervals every few days, the researchers presented the baby gulls with bowls of all four foods.
and tracked what they chose. All of the birds consistently ate the fish, and very few of them ever tried the bread.
“Animals can live and explore urban areas for human food waste,” says senior author Dr. Neeltje Boogert.
“However, this does not necessarily mean they’re thriving or that they prefer this food, rather than making the best
of a bad situation,” adding, “More research is needed to investigate how the food young animals receive affects
their later life, including their food choices, health and breeding.”
28.What do seagulls like best according to-UK researchers?
A.Cat foods. B.Plant seeds. C.Potato chips. D.Ocean creatures.
29.What can we infer about the herring gulls?
A.They were caught in the wild. B.They preferred mussels to fish.
C.They were released in the end. D.They stole food from people.
30.What will Dr. Neeltje Boogert probably agree with?
A.Animals in urban areas mainly feed on food waste.
B.Seagulls rely on food waste to go through difficulty.
C.It is clear how animals’ experience affects their life.
D.More proof is needed to show seagulls’ food choice.
31.What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Seagulls’ Preference for Food B.New Living Habits of Seagulls
C.Seagulls’ Choices of Habitats D.Secrets of Seagulls’ Daily Diet

Babies less than a year old can combine simple concepts into complex ideas, showing that creativity begins
in babyhood. According to new research at the Central European University (CEU), babies are not only capable of
creative thinking well before starting to speak, but this sort of thinking may be essential for language acquisition
(习得).
In the study, the researchers set out to explore the origins of human creativity and productive thinking to try
to find out how people arrive at completely new thoughts and ideas. The basic mechanism for doing this is taking
familiar concepts and combining them into new structures, but little is known about how early in life these abilities
can be used.
The researchers found that babies were able to very quickly learn new words that depict small quantities —an impressive achievement — and combine these spontaneously (自发地) with familiar words to fully understand a
phrase.
In the study, the researchers started by teaching the babies two new words: “mize”, to mean “one”, and
“padu”, to mean “two”. Then the babies were asked to combine these new number words with different object
names, for example, to identify “padu ducks” from among a group of images.
By teaching new words, the researchers were able to test the babies’ ability to combine concepts in real time,
rather than simply recall combinations of words that they already knew from previous experience. By using eye-
tracking technology to monitor where the babies look, the researchers were able to show that the babies could
successfully combine the two concepts to understand what they were being asked about.
Lead researcher, Dr Barbara Pomiechowska at the CEU, said, “For babies, this ability to combine different
concepts is likely to help not only to interpret the complex language input, but also to learn about different aspects
of the physical and social world.”
32.What can we know about babies’ creative thinking?
A.It develops after babies’ language skills.B.It determines babies’ intelligence.
C.It is key to language learning. D.It will disappear with time.
33.What is the primary goal of the study?
A.To assess babies’ capability of creative thinking.
B.To study the way new thoughts and ideas are formed.
C.To find out how many new words babies can learn.
D.To explore the origins of babies’ language acquisition.
34.What does the underlined word “depict” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A.Describe. B.Demand. C.Replace. D.Compare.
35.How did the researchers test babies’ concept combination?
A.By tracking their physical actions. B.By measuring their brain activity.
C.By observing their eye movements. D.By analyzing their language ability.

People mean well when they encourage us to be strong when we face the challenging moments of our lives,
but that effort is an artificial construct.
36 Your desire to be strong is a dam you build to control the flow of complex feelings. On the
outside, everything is fine. People see you pushing forward and they admire this “strength”. However, unless youkeep building that dam higher, it will eventually overflow. It usually happens when we least expect it.
Instead of resisting weak moments, I have learned to embrace them. When I embrace weakness, I feel peace.
I sense love. There is freedom in that decision that isn’t present when my focus is on staying strong. 37 An
effort to “stay strong” denies you the feelings your heart longs to experience under those challenging
circumstances.
The strongest bonds I see between two people are the ones that get developed when both are willing to
embrace their weaknesses with each other. Those moments offer honesty, and chances to demonstrate loyalty and
love. 38 We think we’re stopping a series of difficult emotions, but actually we’re blocking love from
reaching us from the other direction.
Could I be hurt by allowing myself to show and share my weakest moments? Of course, hurt people
sometimes hurt others. 39 And I believe that if someone has embraced their weaknesses and feels free, they
can one day inspire others through their journey.
It is tempting to be strong, but building a dam will not offer a long-term solution. 40
A.But freed people will help to free others.
B.Imagine that your emotions represent a river.
C.That’s why I encourage people to do the same.
D.You can reach this by taking some simple steps.
E.Dealing with your weakness cannot be overstated.
F.Without weakness, there is never a chance for a relationship to expand.
G.Allowing love to flow while embracing weakness is the only way to grow.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。
As a young boy, I was carefree. Every vacation I looked forward to two things—seeing my grandpa and
hearing his wonderful stories. My grandpa was a very good storyteller. He had worked various odd jobs when he
was young and wove his adventures and misadventures into fantastic tales. These wonderful tales colored my
childhood.
As I grew up, I had to admit that Grandpa’s stories went on a little long, even a little boring and graduallylost their magic. However, not wanting to upset him, my brother and I would sometimes take turns sitting in the
living room, listening to grandpa tell his stories.
When my grandpa was approaching 91, he suffered from serious memory-loss. It was kind of what doctors
called dementia (痴呆), probably the earliest stage of Alzheimer’s disease. Following the doctor’s directions, we
moved him into a Sunrise Assisted Living Community, where he could get a better care. After that, grandpa hardly
came to our house.
One weekend before my grandpa’s birthday, I came to visit him. Seeing grandpa sitting in his armchair, dull-
looking, I was consumed with mixed feelings. I wheeled grandpa to the sunshine in the courtyard, talking to him.
He couldn’t express himself clearly and spoke in short bursts, but I listened to him patiently and carefully just as I
used to be a little boy.
It was then that I noticed a shadow box with some old and yellowish photos in it. I picked one up, in which
my brother, several boys in our neighborhood, and I were playing basketball with grandpa cheering us on twenty
years before. My mind flashed back to those beautiful memories. Back then, Grandpa was in good physical
condition and we were all wearing basketball jerseys, playing and laughing with abandon. I presented the photo to
my grandpa, pointing at each member and reminding him of their names. Incredibly, grandpa could speak out the
name of every player. I even caught a soft light in grandpa’s eyes and a smile on his lips.

1. 续写词数应为150 左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
