How do we measure what makes a good conversation? Is it by how many times we
laugh?Or is it 1 by how we feel afterwards—how deeply the words have 2
us ?There is one conversation where I can 3 almost word-for-word in my
head. These words have even 4 the course of my life.
In 2016, I walked into a small valley in Jordan.A young boy called Faisal saw me
kicking football with some kids and 5 me.
“I saw you playing football,” he told me.“You were very good.”
“Thanks,” I replied, “but you're being too 6 .I was not good at it.”
“Oh yes,” he said.“Your skills are 7 .But it was good of you to play with
the boys.”
He told me about his two jobs—one looking after sheep in the hills, and one looking
after tourists. The sheep were easier, he said.Later, as he 8 how the world was, he
told me a saying:“Give without remembering; take without 9 .”
Faisal's background was quite different from mine. And yet he held this 10
philosophy, and the more I travel, the more I see that the world is 11 a good
place. There is more that connects us than divides us—of that, I'm certain.
The fact that I will again have the 12 to be part of these remarkable
conversations—each will be unique, and may even leave a 13 in my life—is still
one of the most exciting 14 of travel for me.For that possibility, I'm forever 15
