One bright Saturday morning, Mali and her mom walked around the neighbourhood. That is,
her mom walked, but Mali ran, skipped, jumped over puddles and visited the neighbours’ dogs.
Mali paused to look at the budding (发芽) trees on her block. “I can’t wait until summer,” she
said, “especially for Mrs. Fair’s great tomatoes at her market stand.” She pointed.
Mali’s mom stood looking at the empty lot where the market was set up every summer
weekend. She looked at Mali, “Honey, Mrs. Fair told me last week that she had to close her stand.
She’s really getting too old to run it anymore.”
Mali turned, stared, and put her hands on her waist. “But Mrs. Fair’s stand can’t close!” she
said. “It’s the only place in the neighbourhood we can buy fresh, delicious tomatoes.” Then she
added, to show she wasn’t being selfish, “Everyone needs fruits and vegetables for a healthy diet.”
After they got home, Mali headed out to her backyard swing to think. “If only I could plant a
garden,” she thought. “but our yard is way too small.” Just then, she noticed her neighbour, Mr.
Taylor, looking at his daffodils. Mali knew he was thinking about how he had planted those
flowers with his wife. This was the first spring since his wife had died, and Mali saw the sadness
on his face. Then she had an idea.
Mali cleared her throat, and Mr. Taylor looked up. Mali decided to walk over to the fence.
“Hi, Mr. Taylor,” she said. He waved, and turned away. “Wait!” Mali cried. Taking a risk while
she still felt brave, she rushed to gather her thoughts. “Mr. Taylor, Mrs. Fair isn’t doing her tomato
stand anymore because she’s getting old. So I’d like to grow tomatoes. I don’t want to get in the
way of your flowers, but I really want tomatoes.”
Suddenly, Mr. Taylor smiled. “Mali, I’m not sure what you’re talking about, but you’ve made
me smile. Reasons to smile have been scarce lately. What do you want to do?” Mali repeated, “I
wanted to plant tomatoes, but I have no big land.” She sounded a little awkward.

Just then, an idea came to Mr. Taylor. “How about if I make you a loan? I’ll let you use a
plot of land in my yard. When your garden starts to prosper, you can repay me with a few
tomatoes.” On hearing that, Mali nodded her head without the slightest hesitation. The two shook
hands on this deal. The next day, Mali bought some tomato plants with all her pocket money. Mr.
Taylor taught Mali how to prepare the soil and place the plants. Finally, Mali was instructed to
place stakes in the ground to help hold the plants up. Mr. Taylor explained, “Once the tomato
comes, the heavy fruit makes the branches bend.” Then all they could do was water and pull
weeds regularly, waiting in eager anticipation for the tasty fruit.
When the fruit ripened, there were more juicy, red tomatoes than even Mali could have
imagined. “There is no way I can eat all these,” she realized. On Saturday, Mali and Mr. Taylor
carried several crates of ripe tomatoes to the market, and by the day’s end they had sold them all.
Not only did Mali get back the money she invested, but she also made a profit of twenty dollars.
Remembering the loan, she handed the note to Mr. Taylor. “This is the wage you have earned,”
Mr. Taylor said softly. The bright and diligent girl beamed and suggested, “Maybe you can sell
some of your daffodils and we can run a market stand together.” What a good idea! Picturing agarden of fragrant flowers and fruitful plants, and more importantly, the smiles on people’s faces
when they get those, they started looking forward to the next summer.

I chewed on my pencil as I walked back and forth across my bedroom. What was I going to
do? It was bad enough that I was the new kid. But now I was sure to get laughed at by my
classmates. How could my first homework be such a disaster?
“My name is Anna, and this summer I...” I stopped. How could I stand in front of my class
and say that I’d spent the entire summer handling something that most people don’t even like totalk about? Poop (粪便). I’d spent three months shoveling (铲), collecting, and analyzing cow
poop on my grandparents’ farm. I tried to think of a different adventure I could share. Maybe I
could say I’d spent the summer on the Weather Control Team preventing floods.
“Time for dinner,” my mom called.
I walked slowly down the stairs and slid into my chair.
“You’ve been in your room since you came home from school,” Mom said. “What are you
working on?”
I sighed. “I have to tell the class what I did this summer.”
My younger brother, Seymour, began to laugh uncontrollably. “No one will want to sit next
to you after they hear you were covered in cow poop all summer!”
“OK, that’s enough, Seymour,” Dad said.
“Anna,” said Mom, putting green beans in a bowl, “be proud of the work we did this summer.
Our planet would be in sad shape without scientists like your grandfather.”
It’s true that my grandfather does important work. He developed an easy way to use poop as a
source of fuel. Using the poop is now easy, economical, and environmentally safe.
“I know, Mom,” I said, staring at my meatloaf. “But it’s not exactly something people want to
hear about before lunch.”
That night I dreamed about more splendid adventures: cave diving in Mexico, hiking through
the Amazon rainforest . . .
At school the next day, I bent over my desk, listening to each kid speak. My palms were
sweaty, and the knot (结) in my stomach grew tighter.
“And that was my journey to Mount Everest,” Ember Adams said, finishing her report. She
bowed and look her seat.

“It’s your turn, Anna.” the teacher said. I took a deep breath, slowly rose from the seat and
dragged my legs towards the platform. Hands trembling. I began my narrative. “My name is Anna,
and this summer I did something unusual. Can you make a guess?” Out of curiosity, my new
classmates offered me various responses, but none of them hit the spot. Urged by my new friends,
I unfolded the tale of my unique summer experience—dealing with cow poop on my grandparents’
farm. The instant the two words “cow poop” escaped my lips, whispers from the class came into
my ears. I cleared my throat and continued, “But I’m proud of what I did.” Then I explained how
my grandfather developed an easy way to use poop as a source of fuel, making using the poop
easy, economical and environmentally safe. Suddenly, the whole room fell silent and they all
listened to me attentively, eyes fixed on me. I could sense the envy in their eyes and my initial
uneasiness was completely replaced by a sense of pride and fulfillment. After what seemed like
centuries, I brought an end to my narrative. I was not laughed at instead, I was greeted by
thunderous applause.
After class, some of my classmates approached me. For an instant, I was surrounded by
numerous curious minds. They seemed to be really interested in the smelly cow poop and raced to
inquire about everything to do with it. I patiently shared with them poop’s magic power and my
grandfather’s anecdotes with the poop. Some of them even asked me if they could join me in the
poop project, which was literally beyond my expectation. My job of dealing with poop didn’t put
me to shame. It dawned on me that scientists like my grandfather do make a huge difference to the
world that we live in. Additionally, it didn’t take a long time before I made new friends in my newclass after my sharing of the extraordinary experience. A seed of hope was sown in my heart in
secret—I made a resolution that I would try to be a scientist like my grandfather and do my part to
help reshape our planet.

The smell of defeat filled the air on a warm October evening. In the school parking lot stood
Coach McDonald and me, a loser in the 160-pound weight class.Coach McDonald’s hands firmly grasped my shoulders, his eyes looking through my
uncertainty. “Billy,” his voice cut through the uneasy quiet. “The potential for you to become an
excellent wrestler exists. It takes time,” he argued.
“Don’t you see? I lost... again. Ten matches. Never won.” Frustration struck me as I stepped
away from Coach McDonald. Pulling my cell phone from my equipment bag, I said definitively,
“I need to call my mom. She’ll pick me up.” I just wanted to get away as soon as possible and
flung myself into Mom’s arms. She had always been my best friend and supporter.
While waiting for her to answer my call, the thought of quitting the sport rumbled in my
mind. I was so frustrated at that time that I ignored the joy and satisfaction wrestling had brought
to me.
Coach McDonald closed in. “Billy, look at me,” he said. “Pound for pound, you’re the
strongest and most flexible (灵活的) kid on the team. That’s a winning combination. Master the
techniques in practice, and victory will be yours, I promise.”
I coughed and pulled my sweaty shirt off my chest. “When, Coach?”
With a knowing look, Coach said, “Do you know how long it took me to win my first
match?” He stood up straight, squinting (斜视) like he was recalling a tough time. “During my
first year, I lost every match. I ended the season 0-11. I didn’t lose at all in the following two
years, including two state championships. Billy, that can be you someday. But it’ll never happen if
you quit.”
In that silent moment, I felt a slight pain within me, but it was weak, not strong enough to
change my mind. Coach cleared his throat, glancing at his watch. “Well, I’m hungry.”
“And my mom’s here,” I said. Then I jumped into her car.

In the car, I told her I lost again and I was hesitating about quitting the team. Mom remained
silent for a full minute, her grip on the steering wheel tightening. Finally, she spoke with a
measured tone that broke the silence. “Billy, quitting is not a sign of weakness. Winning or losing
doesn’t define you. What matters is whether you’re pursuing something that brings you joy.” Her
words cleared up the self-doubt that had clouded my decision and reignited a spark of courage
within me. I recalled why I had learned to wrestle in the first place. “Thanks, Mom. I know what I
should do.”
The next day, I walked into the training field again. Coach McDonald was already there,
setting up training for the team. He smiled when he saw me with a knowing look in his eyes.
“Back for more, Billy?” he said, clapping me on the back. I nodded, making up my mind to give it
another shot. As I tied my shoes and prepared for practice, I felt a surge of determination washing
over me. Maybe Coach was right. Maybe I do have what it takes to be a champion. And if not, at
least I am pursuing something that brings me joy and a sense of purpose.

Steven Green was a hardworking man who worked all his life to support his family. He

However, as he grew older, he could no longer do these jobs. His knees grew weak, and his health

Steven’s kids didn’t live in the same state as him and could only send him a little money

him. “Mr. Green, it’s so good to see you! How have you been?” Ben asked. “I’m doing great. I’m
just selling couple of things I no longer use at home for some cash. Being weak is terrible when
you’re old, so take care of yourself when you are young, alright?” he said almost jokingly. Ben
nodded.
“Thanks for the tip, Mr. Green!” he said before waving goodbye. That same day, Steven
was cooking dinner when he heard the doorbell ring. He wasn’t expecting anyone, so he curiously
walked towards the door.

Surprisingly, he saw Ben standing there with a jacket in his arms. “Earlier today, I noticed
you weren’t wearing a jacket. It’s getting cold these days, so I want to give you this jacket as a
gift,” Ben said, handing Steven the coat. Steven accepted the gift and thanked Ben a lot. The nextday, Steven wore the jacket to work. Feeling cold, he put his hands inside the pockets. Then he
found there was something inside. To his surprise, it was a check for $ 200!
“Ben must have forgotten about the check inside the pocket,” Steven thought. He then went
to Ben’s house. “I believe this is yours,” Steven said, showing Ben the check. But Ben shook his
head and said the check was Steven’s. Seeing Steven’s confused face, Ben explained Steven had
helped his mom a lot and that he had never had a chance to repay Steven’s kindness before.
Therefore, when he realized Steven needed help, he decided to reach out. Hearing those words,
Steven was so touched that he hugged Ben tightly.

We had a nice and laid-back Saturday. We took the kids to the park having a great time
during the day and we ordered pizza for dinner. After I got the kids into bed, I went to the kitchen
to get a drink for myself. That was when I unintendedly looked out of the window to our
neighbor’s house across the street. To my surprise, it was completely dark.
Our neighbor was an older woman, Mrs. Biddle. She was the kind of woman who kept to
herself. She lived in a big house by herself and rarely left except to go grocery shopping. Her son
would visit from time to time. Although I had attempted to get close to her, all my efforts to be
neighborly toward her failed. I tried to strike up conversations, but she would cut me short.
Oftentimes, if she saw me walking to her house, it was obvious from the expression on her face
that she didn’t want to be bothered. She would hurry inside to avoid me.
Now looking at her house, I thought it was odd that all her lights were off. Mrs. Biddle
never went out at night. As a matter of fact, she was a night owl like me, with her lights usually
burning way past midnight. That’s when it hit me: I had to go over to her house. I knew something
must be wrong.
Concerned about her safety, I walked across the street and rang her doorbell several times.
There was no answer. With a growing desire, I tried peeking through her window, but her curtains
were drawn. I went back to her door to ring the bell again when I heard something stir inside.
“Mrs. Biddle?” I called out loudly. Then I heard a small voice. I couldn’t make out what she was
saying, but I knew it was Mrs. Biddle, and she needed help.

steps from her house, hit her head as she fell, and broke her ankle so she was unable to get up. The
doctor told us she was going in and out of consciousness.
The next day, we went to the hospital to visit Mrs. Biddle again. That’s when I saw her smile

we became good friends with Mrs. Biddle. Her attitude changed. She didn’t seem so distant and
she smiled often. She joined us for many family dinners and holidays and became an honorary

It was Mr. Morgan’s first day as a new history teacher. He was giving the students a lecture
on the Great Depression and World War II, when the door suddenly opened. A boy walked in with
his eyes fixed on the floor and took his seat without speaking a word or looking up at the teacher.
“Good morning, young man,” said Mr. Morgan, his voice was strict. “It’s 9:15, and you’re 20
minutes late for class. Do you have a good reason?” But the boy just sat without responding.
“Could you please stand up and introduce yourself?” Mr. Morgan added. “I’m Archie,” replied the
boy as he rose and looked up, rubbing his tired eyes. Archie looked very untidy and dizzy (头晕目眩的), as though he hadn’t slept at all the previous nights. “Nice to meet you, Archie. I’m your
new history teacher. You’re late for class. Do you mind telling me why? You just walked in
without excusing yourself, and I won’t entertain such behavior.” Archie hesitated for a while. “I’m
sorry, sir. I overslept. I didn’t mean to come in late. I was just tired, sir,” he finished, unable to
control his yawn, and the whole class laughed. “Silence!” Mr. Morgan demanded. “Archie, you
cannot be late for class like this. Can I see your homework? I heard your previous history teacher
gave you assignments every weekend. Show it to me, will you?” Archie handed over his notebook,
and Mr. Morgan’s expression turned uneasy. “Umm, looks like you didn’t do your homework at
all.” “I didn’t do it, sir,” the boy said sheepishly as the teacher looked through the rest of the
pages. “Archie, what is this? You haven’t done any of your homework this whole term,” Mr.
Morgan scolded. “I want to meet your parents tomorrow, alright? Or I’m taking you straightto the
principal’s office. Is that clear?” “Yes, sir,” Archie murmured and sat on his seat.
But the boy didn’t show up the following day. The principal told him, “We’ve given Archie
chances, but there’s no improvement. His presence is affecting our academic statistics.” Mr.
Morgan started to worry.

Morgan paid a visit to Archie’s home, only to discover the boy’s life was far more difficult

The boy had to shoulder the burden to do a part-time job to help with the debt. These things

“You’re meant for something better. Look at your hands: you should be holding books. As for the
cooking, I can do it for you and you can focus on your study after the work.” Mr. Morgan said. It
became a routine. A month later, Archie’s grades improved.
Fifteen years later, successful Archie returned to his old school to thank Mr. Morgan.
Walking down the familiar hallways, he felt excited. A familiar voice came and Archie recognized
it immediately. “Mr. Morgan! It’s me, Archie. Do you remember me? The boy who worked and

talked excitedly about the days when Mr. Morgan accompanied him and cooked for his family,
making sure Archie had enough energy to study. Archie was a successful businessman now but he

I was confident at the audition (试演) for the school play and felt pleased to get a role. It
just felt good to be in the play, even if I had only four or five lines. I worked hard at perfecting
those lines. I repeated them over and over again. I put in the emphases and intonations (语调) that
my drama teacher had suggested and, because I was on stage much longer than for just four or five
lines, I had many actions to rehearse (排练) and perform. “Do them in front of a mirror,” my
drama teacher had advised me. “Watch how you look; practice and rehearse as often as you can.” I
did just that. I worked and worked at it. It was fun and exciting rehearsing.
Then finally the big night came. Suddenly, things felt different. The theater was full of
people. As I dressed, I could hear the chatting and noises of the audience. I looked around at the
other more experienced actors and saw that their previous confidence seemed to have disappeared.
Had they got their makeup right? Was the costume done up correctly? What if they forgot their
lines? The more people talked about their anxiety, the more nervous everyone became. The
worries spread from person to another—like a baton (接力棒) being passed in a relay race—until
the whole of the backstage area seemed to be full of tension and worry.
I was on stage early, at first performing my non-spoken role in the background with several
other guys around the same age. When, suddenly, I heard my cue (出场提示), the lights were
bright in my eyes, I couldn’t see the audience but knew there were hundreds of people out there allwatching me. The words that had flowed so easily when I stood in front of a mirror didn’t want to
come, and when they did I found myself hurrying into them. I tried to slow down my thoughts and

Respect and revere (敬畏) nature. I’m Julie, 56 years old, living in San Luis Obispo,
California, about four miles from the beach. Every few years, the humpback whales come into the
bay for several days while migrating.
In November 2020, the whales were around, so I took out my yellow double kayak (皮划
艇) to watch the wildlife. I paddled out the pier (长堤) and saw seals, dolphins, and about 20
whales feeding on silverfish. They sprayed through their blowholes. Each one is huge, about 15
metres long. Sometimes they turned side fins as if waving at me. It was incredible.
At the time, my friend Liz was with me. We had met 28 years earlier. I asked Liz if she
wanted to see the whales. I really wanted to share the magnificent experience with her.
“No way,” she said. She’s terrified of whales and sharks. I promised that the craft was
stable and safe enough. Moreover, humpback whales couldn’t swallow down kayaks for their
throats were tight even though they had enormous mouths and white-wall-like internal mouth
structures, not to mention that we got paddles and life jackets. After some persuasion, Liz finally
agreed.
We set off at about 8:30 the next morning. There were already about 15 other kayakers in
the bay. One hour later, I spotted two whales right past the pier, swimming toward us. We were in
awe, feeling amazed to be so close to a creature that size.
When whales swam down after breaching (跃身激浪), they disappeared in ripples. I figured
if we paddled there, we’d be safe since they’d just left. We followed them at a distance—or what I
thought was a distance. I later learned that it’s recommended to keep 90 metres away, or about the
length of a football field. We were probably 18 metres away.
All of a sudden, a swarm (群) of fish started jumping out of the water into our kayak. Their
movement sounded like crackling glass. Now I knew we were too close. I was terrified. Then our
kayak was lifted out of the water—about two metres—and tipped back into the ocean. I figured
the whale was going to drag us down somehow, and I had no idea how deep.

What I didn’t realise at the moment was that Liz and I were in the whale’s mouth. It had
engulfed my entire body except for my right arm and paddle. Liz, meanwhile, was looking up
directly into the whale’s jaw — it was like a big white wall. She told me later she thought she was
going to die. I was still worried about being sucked down by the vacuum, so I just kept thinking
that I had to get up and fight this. Whales have enormous mouths but tiny throats. Anything they
can’t swallow, they spit out. We were wearing life jackets, and soon we both popped up out of the
water about a meter apart. The entire ordeal lasted only ten seconds, but to me it felt like an
eternity.
Thankfully, the whale spitted us out, people paddling to help, shooting videos. A few
people were nearby, and someone shot a video of the entire incident. A few days later, I studied the
video and saw how close I’d come to being injured or killed. I became so much more appreciative
of life after that day. There’s no way I’m getting that close to whales again. I want to respect their
space and now I’m very aware of the power of nature.

I should not have dressed up. Obviously, no other fifth grader had felt driven to celebrate the
first day of school via fancy clothing. So I stood out not just as a newcomer, but as an awkwardly
dressed one. Scratching at black tights with the toe of my sneaker, I paused uncertainly in the
doorway of the Writing Room.
Pausing uncertainly, however, was not the way of the world of Mr. Matthews. This red-
haired, red-beard, red-faced man seemed to call wildly to me to enter. I walked over to a seat and
in three minutes of casual observation I was convinced that I had never known an adult like him.
He laughed from his belly, moved his ears on request, and his face then turned even redder. His
students loved him; it was evident from the way they greeted him to the way they relaxed when
they entered his room.
On the contrary, I was not relaxed. I was uninterested in writing. My only previous writing
experience had been in cloth-covered books with more room for pictures than print. I had no idea
what to expect from a class that was just called "Writing", but I was certain I wasn't going to like

Yet Mr. Matthews spent that first class entertaining us. He told stories, jokes, and then ended
the class early, making us have a rest. Our homework to write about the best part of summer
seemed almost an afterthought for him. However, I was seized by a desire to do my homework. It
wasn’t anything specific he had said in class that day, but the way he had acted. I wanted this man
to like and approve of me, and the quickest way to learn this was through my writing.
That night, despite having dealt with a word processor all of twice in my life, I wrote with
passion. Proudly handing it in the next morning, I was sure it was the best thing I’d ever written.
For the rest of the year, this one-man audience inspired me to improve continuously. The fifth

activity, flowing from journals to emails to poetry workshops to newspapers. All is because she

It was Christmas Eve when my sister and I decided to open our presents before our mom got
home from work. She usually came home about an hour after we got home from school, which we
thought was plenty of time to sneak a peek at (偷看) the gifts under the tree. My sister opened the
first gift while I was ordered to stand guard at the big picture window in our front room.
I was so excited that I could barely stand still. I also couldn’t keep my eyes on the windowvery long. My head moved from the window to my sister and back to the window again. I felt like
I was watching a Ping-Pong match.
“All right!” my sister shouted. She pulled out a jewelry box. “You know what that means,
don’t you?”
I jumped up and down. “Yeah, it’s my turn!”
“No,” she said. “It means that there must be some jewelry under here. I watched my sister
rummage (翻找) through the presents under the tree trying to find one she thought was small
enough to be a necklace or earrings.
“Hey, that’s not fair!” I said, stomping my foot. I couldn’t do anything except stand guard as
she opened present after present. Finally, when my sister’s curiosity was satisfied and she had
finished, wrapping her last present back up, we traded places.
My heart hammered so hard that it felt like my chest was moving in and out. My sister
reminded me to be careful not to tear the paper, and wrap the presents back up the same way that I
had found them.
After unwrapping a few presents, I found it faster to open one end of a present and peek
inside. “Cool! Mom and Dad got me headphones for my stereo (立体声音响设备)!” I pulled the
headphones out of the box and was about to put them on when my sister shouted, “Quick! Wrap it
back up! Mom’s coming!”

“Come on!” My sister’s face was as white as the paint on the wall. I pushed the headphones
back into the box, but my hands were shaking so much that I couldn’t rewrap it. Fortunately, I had
just finished rewrapping it when I heard the door open. My mother came into the front room, and I
jumped up and said, “Hi, Mom!” She smiled at me and didn’t appear to suspect anything. We were
relieved. On Christmas morning, my sister and I pretended to open our presents as if nothing had
happened.
Our secret was safe, but somehow Christmas morning didn’t feel the same. I don’t know if it
was that opening our gifts for the second time just wasn’t as much fun as the first time, or if we
came too close to getting caught and didn't want to think about what our mother would have done
to us. We were burdened with regret for our deeds. So in the following years, we never opened our
presents early again, as we wanted to cherish and genuinely share the “surprise” moment with our
parents.

I remember that I was worn out when I got home that afternoon. I'd had to be at the theatre
for the audition (试演) at nine that morning, and then I'd been waiting around for about three
hours before the director finally saw me. I performed my song and almost at once he told me I
could go home. “I am very sorry,”he said,“but your voice isn't quite right for the part.”It had been
a similar story at all the auditions that I'd done over the past few weeks.
It had been my dream for years to be in a famous musical like The Sound of Music or
Mamma Mia, so I'd taken lessons in singing and dancing, and had come to the city to try and get a
part in a show. I'd been really pleased when I'd managed to set up no fewer than ten auditions, but
so far all of them had gone the same way. As I arrived back that afternoon at the little apartment
where I rented a room, I really wondered whether I should bother going to the eleventh the next
morning. It was a show I'd have loved to be in — but really, what was the point? Someone I knew
had told me about a job at a local coffee shop, and had said that if I called in for a quick chat at ten
the next day, I'd almost certainly get the job. It meant missing the audition, but right now, itseemed like a much more sensible thing to do.
I always sing when I need to cheer myself up, and because there was no one else in the
apartment, I slipped off my shoes, went and stood in front of the mirror and started singing.Quite
quickly I found myself belting out (大声唱) one of my favourite songs, Bridge over Troubled
Water. As I finished the song, I suddenly heard applause. I looked around the room thinking that
my roommate had perhaps slipped in without me noticing — but there was nobody. Then I went
over to the open window of the apartment, and saw an elderly woman standing on the far side of
the pavement below, looking up at me.

support from a stranger was like a beacon of light in the midst of my doubts and disappointments.
I felt a surge of confidence and determination washing over me. With renewed spirit, I made up

The next day I went to the eleventh audition. As I walked into the theatre, I felt a newfound

My political career in the Student Union(SU)began by throwing frisbees (飞盘) on the
campus lawn. I would throw a frisbee to someone I didn’t know and they would throw it to
someone they didn’t know. Before long, we had built a community of people who met every day
at lunch to throw frisbees.
Besides frisbees, the group decided to climb the mountain near our campus. When we
reached the peak, it felt like we were at summer camp. We laughed, danced and told jokes. It was
totally fun. While playing like little children in the cool mountain air, we all decided to do it again
the following week. Our motto (座右铭) was “Bring a Friend” . We started out with a small group
of hikers. But as the word spread, the number of participants increased. We made it a rule to climb
the mountain every weekend. All of us were passionate about the fantastic experience, which we
were looking forward to.
One day on campus, I decided to throw my frisbee to some strangers, run over and invite
them to climb the mountain. Much to my surprise, a girl sitting in a wheelchair got hold of it. Her
name was Grace. I asked her if she had ever been to the top of the mountain. She said she hadn’t.
Holding the wheelchair tightly, she hung down her head in awkward silence. Then she told me that
she had suffered from lung disease when she was young and depended on oxygen twenty-four
hours a day. So, it was impossible for her to move without help. Fortunately, things got better.
With continuous efforts and treatment, she managed to live on her own with the assistance
of the wheelchair: I told her that my friends and I would carry her if she were up for it. On hearing
what I said, she refused without hesitation, adding that it would be a bother to carry her. But I tried
my best to persuade her to come along with us by talking about the interesting experiences.

joint efforts, we made it to the top of the mountain and admired the fantastic scenery. A sense of
excitement took hold of her, tears rolling down her cheeks like broken pearls. She was so grateful
to us and we became close friends.
On the downhill path, Grace asked me why not run for the SU election. However, I didn’t
have enough courage to run for it. Knowing I was in a dilemma, Grace had a sincere
communication with me. “So kind and friendly are you that you helped me to enjoy the beautiful

Special#2,Please
My flight arrived in San Diego around midnight, and by the time I drove home and got into
bed it was nearly 2:00 a. m. I was tired and jet-lagged when I dragged myself out of the bed.
Nevertheless,I had to be up bright and early that morning: I was the opening keynoter(主旨发言

In short, I needed to recover quickly. A hearty breakfast in the early morning sun was what Ineeded. I headed for Carlos & Annie’s, a popular restaurant located in the heart of the seaside
town.
“I’d like steak and eggs, please,” I said to the waitress after I had finally found a table in the
restaurant. “Oh, I'm sorry,” she apologized. “We're out of Special#2. We've served the last of our
steaks. How about Special#14?” “Oh, no steak and eggs?” I couldn't seem to accept it.
I'm not sure if it was my heartfelt sigh that caught Carlos, the owner's attention. His warm,
caring brown eyes seemed determined to pinpoint the best solution. He then said, “You know, I
think I did see one final steak back
there.”
Pressing my luck,I quickly declared, “Wow,that would be great. But you know, I’m not sure
if I want a breakfast stenk at all. What I really want is a steak—one that’s two inches thick, tender
and juicy, served medium rare.” “Not to worry,” Carlos assured meand left. The young waitress
gave me a wink(眨眼) and said with a knowing smile, “Carlosis being Carlos again!” I did not
give her words much thought.
Then, I noticed Carlos as he left the restaurant through the side door and walked into a
neighborhood grocery store across the street. Carlos exchanged morning greetings with everyone
he knew and even helped the owner of the bookstore next door by holding the items that filled her
arms. Then he reentered the restaurant with a bag in his hand.

Within minutes, an exact Special#2 was in front of me, its sight and smell instantly lifting my
spirits. If Carlos hadn't stepped in, my day might have continued in a haze of disappointment. As I
took the first bite, I couldn't help but marvel at how a simple act of kindness could profoundly
alter one's outlook. "In a world often filled with haste and indifference, gestures like these stand
out," I thought to myself, savoring not just the meal but the warmth and care that came with it.
I was about to leave when I learned Carlos had already sold the restaurant, a revelation that
made my heart sink. Had I known this would be my last encounter in this familiar setting, perhaps
I would have lingered a bit longer, soaking in every detail. This unexpected change served as a
poignant reminder that nothing in life is permanent, except the memories we hold dear and the
impact we have on each other. "It's the moments of genuine connection that truly enrich our lives,"
I reflected as I walked away, grateful for the brief but meaningful interaction that would now be
treasured in my collection of memories.

Several years ago, I worked as a writing teacher in a rural middle school. I knew all my
students. They trusted me with their stories and so I was given the privilege of having a secret
bond with each one of them. I taught my students about the power of words, and tried to let them
find expression through writing. We learned to trust each other, because we learned how hard it
was to write openly and honestly, and we learned sharing your words took courage. I was always
amazed at the words that came from my students’ hearts.
Later, we had a new student to the school, Al. Al was small and looked younger than other
students in my class. He was with us for only a short while and still trying to fit in. So I was a little
surprised when he volunteered to read. I smiled and nodded for him to do, while in my mind I was
afraid that the others would make fun of the new kid after he read. The room fell silent, and Al
began to read.
“If I had one wish, it would be to meet my dad...” He started out loud and clear.
He had held the attention of my usually restless students for what seemed like 15 minutes. He
told of how he had never known his father, who had left the family when he was a baby. He shared
the intimate details of his struggles to be the only man in the house at such a young age, of having
to mow the lawn and fix broken pipes. He revealed to us the thoughts that went through his mind
constantly about where his father might be and why he might have left.注意:

As my mom says, love is simple. There came a time in my life, over two years ago, when I
had the desire to impact someone’s life positively. My friend Kelley told me about a volunteer trip
she had taken to Gary, West Virginia, and it was a life-changing experience. After looking into
service opportunities, I signed up to take a volunteer trip to Gary.
Volunteer trips have become increasingly popular among young people seeking meaningful
experiences. They gain access to a wide range of volunteer projects concerning various fields such
as education, environmental conservation, community development, and more.
When we arrived in Gary, I noticed how different the town was from where I lived. Houseswere built on little hills. There were few stores or restaurants in town; most had closed. You were
lucky to find a gas station or grocery store.
My job was to help build a new school. The work days were long and hot. We awoke at 6 a.
m. and worked through the day in 90 degree heat. There were always encouraging people by my
side who helped keep me going. Anyway, it was an unforgettable experience.
Then last summer, I decided to challenge myself by taking a volunteer trip abroad with
some other volunteers and taking up meaningful volunteer work in a foreign community. My
destination was a remote village in Honduras, a country in Central America. I wanted to teach
science to the poor children there.
