【提升练习】
1.(2024·河北保定·二模)阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I was always afraid of water. This fear could not be explained, but I knew that the moment I
stepped near any body of water, my legs would turn to jelly (果冻). I would imagine myself
drowning in the water and thrashing around (乱扑腾) helplessly. That was why I had never gone
into a swimming pool until swimming became a school requirement. My school wanted all pupils
to pass a swimming test, and if they could not, then they would have to attend weekly swimming
lessons in school, which made me tremble.
Thus, my parents signed me up for swimming lessons at the pool near my house. With great
unwillingness, I attended those weekly lessons, and each one was great suffering for me. I was
naturally clumsy, and my fear of water did not help at all. Every lesson, I would be spending my
time thrashing about in the water, while my classmates would be swimming countless laps
effortlessly and even turning over like dolphins in the water. How was I going to pass the test at
this rate?
In my swimming class, there was an exceptionally athletic girl. Tall and muscular, her name
was Kathy. She was the best swimmer in our class and always looked at me with disdain (鄙视),
especially when I thrashed about hopelessly in the water.
Once, after a particularly long and hard swimming lesson, I spotted Kathy swimming
gracefully in the pool. Gathering my courage, I asked gently, “Kathy, can you teach me to swim?”
She stared at me coldly. It was as if I stood at the edge of an endless ocean of inadequacy, my fears
appearing like dark storm clouds threatening to drown me. Yet, in that moment, a glimmer of hope
flashed within me, a desperate longing for guidance and acceptance. Would Kathy’s icy exterior
(外表) melt under the warmth of empathy, or would I remain forever thrashing in the sea of my
own fears?

1. 续写词数应为150左右;

To my surprise, she nodded after a few moments of silence. From then on, Kathy stayed
back for about an hour after every swimming lesson to coach me. She taught me how to propel
myself forward in the water and I gradually gained confidence in the pool. Slowly but surely, I
improved under her guidance and encouragement. Four months later, it was time for me to take
my swimming test. I jumped into the pool and followed all of Kathy’s advice. I swam gracefully,
just like a fish, and passed the test with flying colours.
“Congratulations!” Kathy said when she learnt I had passed the swimming test. I threw
my arms around her and hugged her tightly. “Thank you! You’re a wonderful friend! If it had not
been for you, I would not have done so well!” I exclaimed. Since then, our friendship has
blossomed. We met frequently to have fun with each other, sharing both joy and sorrow.
Surprisingly, I grew to love the water. A friend like Kathy is hard to come by. She has a heart of
gold and I will definitely treasure our precious friendship.

In a big city lived a girl named Amy. She was a clever and lively child, but her heart was
often clouded by dissatisfaction. Whenever she saw other children playing with new dolls or
dressed in fancy outfits, Amy’s eyes would sparkle with envy and she wished she had them too.
So she always asked her mother, “Mom, can I have this?” or “Mom, can I have that?” If her
mom didn’t satisfy her need, Amy would respond with endless complaints or tears. She didn’t
understand why she couldn’t possess what she desired.
Her mother, a wise and loving woman, tried to reason with Amy. She explained that Amy
already had so many toys and clothes. She said, “Amy, you’re lucky to have so much. Learn to be
happy with what you have.” But Amy’s ears were deaf to her mother’s words. She could only see
what she lacked, and her heart remained heavy with dissatisfaction.
Amy’s discontentment affected her social life at high school. Her bad temper and constant
complaints about what she lacked made it difficult for her to make friends. When Amy saw her
desk mate Lily using new stationery (文具), she immediately said, “I have better ones.” Once,
hearing some girls talking about their new dresses, she interrupted rudely, “My mom will buy methe same one, even nicer.” Other kids couldn’t bear her attitude and kept away from her gradually,
which made Amy feel more lonely and unhappy.
When Amy told her mother the “unfair treatment” she faced at school, her mother was
deeply concerned about her. She knew that Amy’s constant dissatisfaction was not appropriate and
would eventually ruin her happiness completely. “Something must be done.” she thought. After
deep consideration, she decided to take a different approach. One day, she invited Amy to join her
in volunteering at a local charity that helped the children there in need. Initially, Amy refused, but
her mother’s determined attitude persuaded her successfully.

As they arrived at the charity, Amy’s eyes were opened to a world she had never known.
Although children there wore the patched or secondhand clothes, she could see that their faces
were bright with joy while playing with each other, which made her confused. So Amy decided to
figure out the reasons. She asked them, “What make you satisfied with so little possessions?” A
little boy replied, “Life is so hard for us and sometimes we didn’t have enough food. Therefore,we feel lucky to have your help. Thank you so much.” Hearing that, the other children nodded.
Suddenly, it dawned on Amy that she had taken so much for granted and hadn’t appreciated the
simple pleasures of life.
That voluntary experience and the conversation with the children changed Amy’s life. From
that day on, she began to reflect on her own attitude and realized how fortunate she was to have so
much. To her mother’s surprise, Amy learned to be grateful and no longer complained about what
she didn’t have. Besides, her gratitude also brought about changes in her school life. Amy’s
positive attitude and appreciation made it easier for her to get along with other classmates, and
soon, she began to make friends. Amy was also thankful for the opportunity offered by her mother
that had led her to this point, which made her realize that happiness didn’t come from material
possessions but from the awareness of satisfaction.

Police chief Matthew Bruce’s son, Adam, came late into his lives, so he always spoiled him
and never said no to him for anything. As Adam grew older, he began to take his parents’ love and
concern for granted, as if it were permission for him to do whatever he pleased. There were
certainly times when he was criticized for bad grades or sneaking out of the house, but that was
limited to only minor blame. Adam thought that if he pretended to be an “ideal” son, he would
have to face absolutely no blame from his parents. So he began to act like a good son in front of
them while engaging in all sorts of wrongdoing behind their backs, such as breaking the law.
However, Adam always got away with it.
One day, Adam was driving back from a party with his friend Freddie when he began over-
speeding. Freddie warned him to slow down, but Adam didn’t listen. Adam’s driving worried
Freddie. He asked Adam to slow down again, and when Adam didn’t, he grabbed the steering
wheel himself, causing the car to slide off the road and ran into a tree on the side. Then they heard
the alarm of a police car behind them. The car came to a stop in front of them, and a police officer
approached them.
“I’ve been following your car for a while now, and I’m afraid I’ll have to take you to the
station for speeding. May I have your driver’s license first?” the police officer said.
Freddie was scared. “Here’s my driver’s license, sir,” he said, offering it to the officer.
Adam tried to explain that he was the police chief’s son, but the police officer turned a deaf ear tohim. They drove him to the station, and when Adam stepped inside, he was surprised to see his
father there. He had been called to the station for an urgent case.

Adam felt no worries and thought he was out of trouble. He began begging his father to let
him go and promised not to repeat the same mistake. At this point, Adam thought his father would
talk about his case privately to him, and he’d get away with it as he always did, but his father
wouldn’t let him off the hook this time. Bruce decided to teach him a lesson. He wanted his son to
go to trial and be issued a fine.
He told Adam he would need to earn money himself to pay for the fine. In the end, Adam
had to work a part-time job to pay off the fine. When Adam was finally freed from the fine, he
didn’t stop working. After working hard for the money, he realized how hard it was to earn money
and do something independently. He promised his parents that he would always obey them.
Sometimes you need to be strict with your children to teach them a lesson. Bruce didn’t let Adamoff the hook when he went against the traffic law. That experience changed Adam for the better.
Adam had to pay for his mistakes, no matter how hard he tried to avoid it.

Being the youngest in my family has had its advantages, of course. But being the youngest
also came with its fair share of troubles. I was often told what I couldn’t do and why. I knew that
my family loved me. They always tried to protect me, help me and take care of me, but I couldn’t
wait to show them I could do things by myself. It was a hot day in Florida. The school year had just ended and it was time for summer
vacation. We had just gotten a little black dog who we named One-Eyed.
Everybody wanted to do something for the dog: feed him, teach him tricks and take long
walks with him. Everybody was so happy to have this little active, playful new addition to our
family. I was so desperate to pet One-Eyed myself, too.
Every time I asked my brother or my sister if I could do that, they would shout, “No!” or
tell me that I had germs (细菌). Once, they even convinced me that I had so many germs and that
if I touched One-Eyed he would die! I really believed them and was scared that something terrible
would happen to the dog. Once I even confessed to my mom that I touched the dog when no one
noticed. At first, my mom seemed very confused about what I was telling her, but then she
realized that they were playing a joke on me to keep me away from the dog. My mom criticized
my brother and sister, “You’d better stop teasing your little brother!” Little brother! That’s exactly
what I was. That really got my blood boiling.
The depression built up inside me as I watched them enjoy their time with One-Eyed,
excluding me from the joyous moments. I knew I was capable of taking care of myself and
forming my own connection with our new lovely friend. Determination filled my heart, fueling a
newfound sense of independence.

I was to prove to everyone I could pet and play with One-Eyed. Determined, I approached
One-Eyed slowly, extending my hand towards him. As I got closer, the dog wagged his tail and
looked up at me, as if he knew I was about to do something brave. Taking a deep breath, I gently
placed my hand on his furry head. The moment our skin touched, I felt an incredible rush of joy
and excitement. One-Eyed didn’t seem bothered at all; in fact, he seemed to enjoy the attention. It
was as if a bond had instantly formed between us.
Seeing this, my brother and sister couldn’t believe their eyes. Their jaws dropped in
astonishment. “You did it!” My sister exclaimed, her voice filled with awe. My brother, still in
disbelief, stammered, “But…but we told you all those things!” I smiled triumphantly, realizing
that I had proven them wrong. “You see,” I said confidently, “I am capable of doing things on my
own. And just because I’m the youngest doesn’t mean I can’t take care of myself and be
responsible.” Being the youngest had its challenges, but it also shaped me into the resilient,
determined person I am today. And I will forever be grateful to One-Eyed for showing me that age
and size don’t define one’s abilities.

Mrs Thompson, who was in her seventies, lived alone in her old house, with her children
and grandchildren living far away in a big city. Every day, she would sit by her window, watching
the world go by. Next to her house lived an eight-year-old boy named Sam. Sam seemed to be
always busy. He would go to school, come home, do his homework, and then rush off to his part-
time job at a local flower store. He was saving up to buy a new bike for traveling to and from
school and his part-time job. His parents struggled with money, so Sam wanted to offer his help
any way he could.
One day, Mrs Thompson noticed that Sam seemed sad. She called him over and asked,
“You seem to be unhappy. What’s wrong, dear? Is everything okay at school? Do you need help
with any of your homework?”
Sam hesitated, and then said, “I have a big test coming up, but I don’t have time to study. I
have to work part-time at that flower store every day after school.”
Mrs Thompson thought for a moment. “How about this?” she offered. “I can help you.
Come over after school, and I’ll watch over you while you study. I can even make some snacks foryou.”
Sam’s eyes lit up. “Really? That would be very amazing, Mrs Thompson!”
And so, it began. Every day after school, Sam would come over to Mrs Thompson’s house.
She would prepare some delicious cookies or a sandwich for him, and quietly, he would sit at her
old wooden table and study. Mrs Thompson would knit or read a book, occasionally helping Sam
with a tough question.
As the days went by, Sam’s grades improved gradually. He and Mrs Thompson became

One day, my parents told us that they had to work in the evening and could not come home
to cook for us. My three little sisters looked at me and asked, “What’s for dinner?”
I was in middle school then, but I had three mouths to feed—ages two, six and nine. I was
really short on ideas. Like a corned animal, I searched for a possible answer.
“Where’s the spinning (旋转的) game board?”
“Not spinning game board,” Abby, my oldest sister, protested, “We need food.”
I walked to the closet, pulled out the game board and tested the spinner. Then I divided it
into four areas and fixed a couple of sheets of paper between the plastic arrow and the cardboard
base. I looked at my sisters.
“Who wants chocolate?” I asked.
Alice, my youngest sister, screamed happily. Abby crossed her arms and said. “Mum
wouldn’t let that happen.”
“Mum’s not here.” I said and wrote “chocolate” in the upper right area.
Andy, my middle sister, asked. “What are you doing?”
“You’ll see in a second.” I pointed at the second area. “How about noodles?”
Andy started dancing around in circles.
My youngest sister said, “Dress up like superheroes.”
“Absolutely!” I put her request down in the third blank area, without thinking about how
that would be turned into dinner, hoping the arrow would land somewhere else. We debated the
final section for a few seconds and then collectively decided on pizza for the last blank.
I set the board in the middle of the table. We gathered around the table. and I said. “We aregoing to spin it once, and whatever we land on that’s what we’ll do tonight.”
Abby shook her head. “I don’t think this is a good idea.”
“It’s okay. Mum will understand,” I comforted her.
Alice yelled, “I want to spin it.”
Alice’s try sent the little plastic arrow flying around and around until it landed on... pizza.
Everyone shouted, “Pizza!”, including Abby. I still had no idea what we were going to do. Abby
looked at me and asked, “But what are we going to do?”
“Let’s buy some materials for making pizza first.” I said.

After we got off the bus, we found a local guide to ensure our safety. The guide, whose name is

There were a wide variety of plants which we had never seen before. All of us were amazed

walked back without informing anyone. I did not worry about getting lost since there were other

The sky started to become darker and I was very terrified. I didn’t know what to do. I called
out to my friends, but there was no reply. I tried to look for a way but none of the scenes seemed
familiar. I walked for a few more minutes and I got tired and hungry. I was horrified and longed
for this nightmare to finish. Finally, I gave up and leaned on a tree to rest. I fell asleep quickly and
suddenly I heard a human voice. I doubted my ears but then I was convinced. I screamed, “Help!”
Actually, they were rescuers searching for me. My friends Jake and Liam told Thomas that
they found I was lost, and some rescuers were called to help at once. They led me back to the bus.
Seeing me, my friends told me they were really worried. I apologized to them for leaving the
group without telling them. Instead of scolding me, they comforted me and helped me calm down.
And I truly learned a good lesson from it — safety comes first.

For many, an act of kindness is its own reward. But Eva Hachey found her selflessness
answered in ways she could never have imagined.
For weeks, Eva Hachey had imagined adopting a golden Chihuahua with a white spot on its
forehead. And there he was, at her local SPCA in Fredericton, New Brunswick. The dog had been
abused by his previous owners and was timid. “He’d come to me, then back away and growl, then
come back to me,” Hachey said. “After 15 minutes, the attendant picked him up and put him in
my lap. He started giving me kisses. He stole my heart in that moment.” She adopted the ten-
month-old puppy on the spot and named him Bruno.
Bruno lived happily with Hachey and her 35-year-old daughter, Angel Hutchinson, for five
months. Then, on the evening of September 26, 2016, Hachey, 52 at the time, returned home as
usual at 8 p. m. from her job as a chiropractic assistant and office manager. And as usual, she ate
supper in front of the TV in the living room. Around 10:30, a friend called, just as Bruno went into
Hutchinson’s room to go to sleep for the night. Hachey and her friend chatted a bit, and as Hachey
hung up, she noticed the time was 11:08.
“The next thing I remember was a male voice saying, ‘Eva, Eva, wake up.’ It was an
emergency doctor,” said Hachey. “I looked around, and the room was just full of people. And I
said, ‘What are you doing in my house?’”
What they were doing was saving her life. By the time Hachey had hung up with her friend,Hutchinson was fast asleep in her bedroom and Bruno was in his usual spot next to her under the
blankets. Hachey believed Bruno heard something odd then and possibly went to the living room
to investigate.

Unexpectedly, Bruno ran back to the bedroom and tried every means to awaken
Hutchinson. He barked and jumped on and off the bed. When that didn’t work, he attacked
Hutchinson’s fleshy skin between her fingers. Finally, Hutchinson woke up and was immediately
led into the living room, only to discover Hatchey passed out in the chair. She had almost stopped
breathing and was apparently in danger. Without hesitation, Hutchson lifted her head up so her
mother could breathe, and dialed 911 on her cell. The ambulance finally arrived and Hatche y was
rushed to the hospital. It turned out that she suffered a stroke and would have died without the
quick response.
A year later, Hachey finally fully recovered. Recalling the experience, she was convinced
that being found so quickly after the attack was the key factor in helping her survive. She owed it
to Bruno, saying that it was he that saved her life. “I never imagined he would save my life when Iadopted him. I do believe the animal will pick us and I am lucky he chose me.” Hatchey gazed at
Bruno and stroked his fur gently, smiling contentedly. Any act of kindness is its own reward, no

One night, sitting on the cold steps at the back of my apartment in Kansas, I’d been staring
out into the darkness. The only light came from my cigarette. Rain soaked (浸湿) through my
pants, but I didn’t care. Back in my room, there was a knife on the bedside table and a note on mycomputer screen. I hoped that whoever read it first would understand why I had the plan to end it
all.
Six months before that night, a car accident caused a brain injury in me. I lost my job and
had to live on my savings in my lonely apartment. Since then, I had been suffering from
depression and struggling to get through each day.
I sat there on those cold steps just wanting to end it all. “Tonight. I will,” I thought as I took
another drag of my cigarette.
“Meow?”
I looked up. A black and white cat with round green eyes looked back at me. He meowed
again. Then, walking out from his hiding spot, he jumped at me. He was tiny and damp, but he
rubbed up against my legs. When I reached down to pet him, he leaned into my touch, purring (发
出呼噜声).
That was all it took. I cried. The cat just watched me. I didn’t scare him away. In fact, he
stood there as if he knew how desperately I needed a companion right at that very moment.
I looked into his big green eyes and he looked back. Clearly a stray (流浪的) cat. “When
was the last time you ate?” I said. My plan to end it all was put on hold, at least until I found this
cat some food.
It became a routine: Every day, I’d go to the back steps with some cat food. Usually, the cat,
whom I named Scout, was already waiting for me. He became more than something to live for.
Over time he inspired me to get help for my depression and even gave me the confidence to get
into a serious relationship with Becky in Pittsburgh, whom I had known for years.

Little free libraries have been dotting communities around the globe since the first one was
set up in Hudson, Wisconsin in 2009. During the pandemic (疫情), many people turned these
libraries into little free stores to help neighbors in need. The stores were filled with canned food,
peanut butter, and toilet paper. In Australia, a mother and her daughter decided to open a free plant
stand to share flowers and joy with her community.
Because of the pandemic, people were enclosed and lonely. This was certainly true of Vicky
Robinson and her daughter Rachel, who live in Redan, a suburb of Ballarat in Victoria.
The pair watched people walking by who looked sad and decided to come up with a way to
cheer them up. “So we thought, ‘what can we create through our home education that can put a
smile on people’s faces?’” the mother and daughter said.
Vicky looked at her front grassland and flowering rose bushes and suddenly had a bright
idea. Understanding that gardening was a natural treatment that helped her relax, she came up withthe idea for a plant exhibition stand that was like a little free plant library.
Her husband is a cupboard maker so he built a two-storied stand on their property line and
filled it with young plants and succulents (多肉植物) reproduced from their own plants. In bold
letters, there is a sign that reads, “Need a plant? Take a plant. Have a plant? Leave a plant.”
Despite having lived in Redan for 30 years, Vicky said that she never felt connected with
her community before. There is little cost involved in setting up the little free plant library. “It’s all
worth it just to see their smiles. We have developed trust with the community,” she said. “It leaves
a legacy. It creates a bond in a circle, from generation to generation.”

“Mom, please,” Ann a begged eagerly. “Please, let me do it by myself!” She had never
made cookies by herself before, but at the age of nine, she felt capable of handling many things.
Her friends had been baking cupcakes for a year. Yet, it seemed her parents had little faith in her.
“Anna is going to make cookies? Alone?” her brother, Carl, asked with a laugh. “That is
going to be disaster!” Carl used big words to act smarter than Anna. Having a big brother could be
annoying. Admittedly, Anna always appeared clumsy. But that was before she turned nine. She
thought her parents should realize she would do better now.
At her words, a flash of uncertainty crossed her parents’ faces. Would they agree? Holding
her breath, she had waited for what seemed like ages. Surprisingly, Mom nodded, saying, “Okay,
but please be careful, and remember to take a look at the cookbook first.”
Fueled by determination, Anna raced to the kitchen. With each step, there was a sense of
purpose and confidence growing within her. She had already done it with Mom a million times
before. Putting the cookbook aside, she got down to baking cookies from memory, breaking eggs,
dropping a cold stick of butter, adding salt and then…um…yes, mixing it well! Using a mixer was
easy. She turned on the mixer at the medium speed—and whoa. Whoa. Whoa! Butter splattered
(飞溅) everywhere, making the kitchen in a mess. Collecting herself, she turned back to the
mixing bowl and started again. This time with softer butter.
Anna placed rounded spoonfuls of mixture onto the cookie pan and put it into the oven (烤
炉). Within a few minutes, a fantastic smell filled the kitchen- the smell of cookie success! She
was going to silence all those doubts. No more eye-rolling from her big brother. No more “You’re

One night, I stayed up late partying with my friends Jacob, James and Benjamin, even
though we were conscious internally that we had an important test the next day. On the way back,
when James was driving absent-mindedly, Benjamin was very anxious about the exam; I felt
uneasy and worried about being scolded by Mr. Smith when Jacob came up with a plan to get out
of having to take our test. “Can we escape punishment? Can it really work?” Benjamin questioned
with doubt. However, we didn’t get a better solution and couldn’t bear being a failure. So wefollowed suit as we had no alternative.
We four rolled around in dirt and then went to Mr. Smith office with anxiety. We told him
that we had gotten a flat tire the night before, and unfortunately we spent the entire night pushing
our car back to campus. As a consequence, we were exhausted and couldn’t attend the exam. We
asked for Mr. Smith’s forgiveness and ensured to make up for it.
With the blank expression, Mr. Smith listened quietly and patted our shoulders. Benjamin
gazed at me in discomfort while I secretly looked at the other two. Three seconds appeared to be a
lifelong time. To our delight, he offered a retest three days later. We were okay with that because
we had been given a chance to catch up.
I relieved and worked day and night to prepare for the exam with a sense of guilt welling up
in my chest. So did my three friends in the hope of getting away with punishment.
On the day of the test, we went to Mr. Smith’s office. Unexpectedly, he put all four of us in
separate rooms to take the test. I unfolded my paper and stared at the questions which I was
requested to accomplish. Completely puzzled, I froze. There were only two questions:

When receiving the report card, we four flushed with shame. It was not just because of the

In the classroom of Class 7, Grade 8, students were excited about an upcoming event. The
school had organized a speech competition titled “Ways to Become Successful,” and many
students were eager to showcase their public speaking skills. Among them was 13-year-old Zora,
who, had already won two speech contests and was full of confidence that she could win again.
Zora volunteered to represent her class in the competition, and after a round of voting, she
was chosen as the class representative. Although there were only seven days left until the big day,
Zora felt a sense of ease about the competition. After all, she had been here before and knew what
it took to win.
At home, Zora’s father congratulated her on her achievement, while her mother reminded
her to take the competition seriously. Despite her parents’ advice, Zora was convinced that her past
successes meant this would be a walk in the park. Her teacher also urged her to prepare diligently,
but Zora only sought help once to revise her initial draft.
As the days went by, Zora did not put in the necessary effort to refine her speech. When the
day of the competition arrived, she was hit with a sudden wave of panic. She couldn’t rememberthe content of her speech, and as she stepped onto the stage, her anxiety only grew. After
delivering the opening lines, she froze, unable to continue. The supportive applause from the
audience only added to her confusion, leaving no room for her to recall her prepared words.
Zora struggled through the rest of her speech, finishing it in a state of embarrassment and
shame. As she walked off the stage, she saw the disappointment in her teacher’s eyes and felt the
letdown from her classmates. It was a heavy burden to bear.

Back at home, Zora could no longer hold back her tears. She felt the weight of her actions
and the missed opportunity deeply. Sensing her depression, her father approached her with a
comforting presence. Zora told her failure to her father, after which her father gently explained
that acknowledging one’s mistakes was an important part of personal growth. He emphasized that
true success wasn’t about never failing, but learning from those failures. He also proposed that
Zora deliver a new speech in front of her class, reflecting on the authentic journey to success. The next day, Zora went to school and apologized to her class. She then asked her teacher
and classmates if she could give another speech in her class. They responded to her with warm
applause. After careful preparation, Zora delivered a heartfelt speech about the importance of hard
work and perseverance. Her classmates and teacher listened carefully, and showed their support
and understanding with gentle nods. Through this experience, Zora learned a valuable lesson.
Success is not just about talent or past achievements; it requires continuous effort and preparation.

It all began when my younger brother, Chris, and I went over to Aunt Barbara and Uncle
Howard’s for Thanksgiving. My aunt and uncle live on a farm at the opposite end of town, and
Chris and I love going there. The farm is situated in a valley surrounded by rolling hills. The fields
are lush and green, with crops growing as far as the eye could see. The sound of chickens clucking
and cows mooing fills the air. For my brother and me, it is a wonderland where we have a lot of
fun.
We got up early and did the morning chores before we left. As kids, we talked happily about
the feast along the way. Roasted turkey, cornbread stuffing, sweet potato, and cranberries were
awaiting us. We were curious to know how a turkey could grow so big. When we finally got to my
aunt and uncle’s, Chris and I went outside to see if Uncle Howard needed help with anything. He
and Dad had decided to clean out the turkey coop (笼子) before dinner. Since Chris was only nine,
he got the easier job of scrubbing out the watering cans. I was twelve, old enough to help load the
wheelbarrow (手推车). Work was tough, but we still found time to ask Uncle Howard a lot of
questions about turkeys. He must have been impressed, because when we were finished, he
winked at my dad and handed me a turkey egg. “You kids put it under a setting hen,” he said, “and
in twenty-five days, you’ll have a fine turkey!” Chris was so excited that he nearly dropped his
egg on the way to the house. We both stuffed ourselves at dinner and then couldn’t wait for the
grownups to finish talking so we could go home and tend to our egg.
Dad put the egg under an old hen, and every day Chris and I would check to see if it’d
hatched yet. Twenty-five days seemed like forever.Para. 1. Finally, on the twenty-sixth day, Chris and I walked into the coop after school.

Finally, on the twenty-sixth day, Chris and I walked into the coop after school. We were
surprised and excited to find a furry ball, struggling on its thin legs. Both Chris and I were wild
with joy at the moment. It didn’t take long for the little chick to grow feathers. The old hen would
peer at this odd-looking chick, obviously puzzled why it looked so different from her other babies.
But for us, he was more like an inseparable friend until one day, Dad came to tell us, “Feed it up.
We need a nice fat bird for Thanksgiving.” Our hearts sank.
We waited nervously for the coming of the next Thanksgiving Day. “I don’t want him to end
up on our Thanksgiving table.” Chris said miserably. So we hid him in a cave nearby and told Dad
he was missing. A couple of days later, Dad decided that a fox must have gotten him. We went
without a turkey that year. After Thanksgiving, we hurried into the woods only to find the cave
empty. We were heartbroken. One day several months later, Chris was playing in the garden when
he cried excitedly, “Our old friend has come back!” Sure enough it was our old fellow, and he’d
brought a companion, a pretty little hen turkey.

We had moved to a new town for my husband’s work. After living here for just a couple of
weeks, I was more than ready to pick up my luggage and move back home. I was lonely for a
friend. My boy Samuel was lonely. My husband, Lonny, adapted just fine, but he was occupied
with work most of the time.
I missed our old neighborhood. It had been like a closely knitted community whereneighbors chatted over fences. Newcomers were welcomed with chocolate brownies (巧克力蛋
糕) and carrot bread. It had been easy to find friends there.
Our new community was different. It seemed that family roots grew deep. Deep as the
Mississippi River that flowed past this tiny river town. Breaking in was tough.
“I’m so alone here,” I said to Lonny one evening. Lonny is a good listener, and a problem
solver. “What have you done to meet people?” he asked. “I go to the park every day. I even
dropped by a book salon (读书沙龙) at the library the other day and came across a nice lady with
a boy.”
“Sounds not bad,” he said. “Did you talk to her?” The answer was no. It wasn’t that people
here were unkind. I just didn’t feel like initiating conversations, and I preferred minding my own
business in a new environment.
A few more months passed and winter settled in. It was harder than ever to meet people. I
began to feel bitter. I was tired of trying to fit in a place where we didn’t belong.
Lonny noticed my low spirits. “Amy, you look unapproachable, with your arms crossed and
everything,” he whispered in my ear one afternoon. He and I were sitting in the yard. Samuel, our
five-year-old was playing baseball next to us.
“It doesn’t matter. I’m not going to have friends here.” Just then Samuel looked up. He
must’ve heard our whispers. “Mom’s right, Dad. We’ll never ever have friends here. And we just
want to go back to our old home.” I sat there and looked at my tiny innocent son. His words
mirrored my attitude. And I didn’t like the disturbing reflection.

That’s when I knew that I needed an adjustment. I didn’t want my boy to grow into a bitter
kid. Over the next few weeks, I worked very hard to fit in. I greeted everyone with a friendly nod,
arms uncrossed with a genuine smile. I struck up conversations with acquaintances at the park. I
even baked chocolate brownies and offered them as a nice gesture to our neighbors. Most
importantly, I stopped talking about moving back home and drew my son’s attention to the upsides
of our new community. To my delight, Samuel also started to feel a bit more at home and
included.
One afternoon, Samuel and I ran into the lady with her boy again at the library. I gathered
my courage and walked closer. “Hi, I’m Amy. This is Samuel. Can we join you guys?” I made
sure that I looked approachable. The woman readily pulled up two chairs for us. It turned out we
had a whole lot in common. Following that encounter, we visited each other’s home a million
times. Before long, my family gradually found our way to be part of this river town. One day
Lonny and I were sitting in our yard again, preparing for a barbecue party. “Darling, you still
wanna go back home?” Before I uttered a single word, Samuel cut in, “No, Dad. This is our home
now.”
