amazed, astonished)等形容词或介词短语(to one's surprise, in relief, in panic)等描述人物的情
绪。
▲利用环境细节“融情于景”烘托人物的情感
例如:Della finished her crying and dried her face. She stood by the window and looked out
unhappily at a gray cat walking along a gray fence in a gray back yard.(小说《麦琪的礼
物》中利用3个形容词gray,体现了Della的难受和不开心。)
▲利用恰当的动作描写反映人物的情绪
例如:下面文章片段中的句子:
With no path to follow, Jane just walked on for quite a long time. After she had climbed to a
high place, she turned around, hoping_to_see_the_lake. (动作描写,说明Jane满怀期望) To
her surprise, ( 利用介词短语体现 Jane 的吃惊 ) she saw nothing but forest and, far beyond, a
snow capped mountain top . (寓情于景,体现Jane的无望失落) She suddenly realized that she
was lost.
▲利用高级句式和修饰成分细化情感细节
例如:①“Absolutely!” replied John, excitement shinning in his eyes. (利用名词
excitement和独立主格结构,描写John的兴奋激动)
约翰答道,“一定”,他两眼兴奋地闪闪发光。
②So angry was the bear that it roared and smacked the fence violently. (so ... that倒装句型)
熊怒火中烧,开始咆哮并用爪子猛烈地拍击护栏。
③You can not imagine how frightened we were at the approach of the polar bear. (how 引导

My husband, Robert Stone and I were enjoying a peaceful afternoon together in Barbados— our vacation destination. It was sunny and warm, and we decided it was the perfect time to go
for an ocean dip.
When we were floating around, I said, “What a nice holiday! Let’s swim out, not that far
but enough to be out of our depth.” But we hadn’t considered just how strong the current was on
that particular day. Although we had visited Barbados several times, we didn’t realize the specific
area we floated to was known for its strong current.
Noticing that we were floating in the direction of the neighboring beach, I decided to swim
toward the beach we came from, against the current. I soon realized that my husband was falling
behind and was suddenly too far away to even hear me. I attempted to swim to the shore to get
help but struggled to push past the current. I just couldn’t get anywhere and began to scream out
for a lifeguard. But no one came after a few minutes.
Just then I saw two teenage girls boogie-boarding near the shore. “Help! Help!” I screamed.
Hearing my cries for help, the girls swam toward me and helped pull me onto the boogie board.
One girl told me to hold on tight and tied the boogie board tether (拴绳) to her wrist. The other
girl was by her side for support. They managed to swim to the shore and brought me to safety.
Grateful but still scared, I repeated that my husband was stuck farther out in the ocean. I
asked for a lifeguard. The girls told me there wasn’t a lifeguard around, and they would go get
him. “You can’t do that!” I told them, “Strong current!” The girls reassured me that they were in
Barbados as part of a swimming camp and insisted that they were both experienced in the water.

Before I could say anything further, they swam off with the boogie board. Heart in my
mouth, I stood helplessly on the shore, praying for their safety. Fortunately, the girls reached
Robert quickly and helped pull him onto the boogie board timely. As they swam in, the strong
current kept pulling them back, but they kept going and going. I waited for a few minutes; that
seemed so many hours to me. Finally, the girls together made a really good team, and pulled him
to shore.
Relief washed over me as the girls and Robert reached the shore. “Thank Goodness!
You’re safe,” I said in a trembling voice. With tears in my eyes, I hugged Robert, who was
exhausted and still in panic. We approached the girls and expressed our sincere gratitude, “We’re
forever grateful to you! We would never come back without you!” But the girls insisted that it’s
just what they should do. “We are so glad that you are both okay.” Seeing them leaving, Robert
said, “They really were like a couple of angels on the beach!”

Although Anderson started his business with strong passion, his business broke down just
after several months, He didn’t start any new work ever since. His teacher got to know about that
and called him to his home.
The teacher asked, “Why don’t you start some other work?”
Anderson replied. “I gave my everything to my business and yet it didn’t make it.”
The teacher tried to comfort him, saying “But that’s life. Sometimes we get success and
sometimes we don’t. This doesn’t mean that we stop working.”
“What’s the significance of doing work, when I can’t be sure of success?” Anderson re-
plied with a bit of annoyance.
The teacher took Anderson to a room and showed him a dead tomato plant. Confused.
Anderson said, “It’s dead. Why are you showing it to me?”
The teacher replied, “When I sowed its seed, I did everything right for it. I watered it,fertilized it, sprayed it with pesticide (杀虫剂). I took great care of it but it still died.” He paused
for a while and then continued. “Doing work is the same... No matter how hard you try, you
cannot decide what happens in the end. However, you can control those things in your hands. Just
do your best!”
Anderson asked, “But if there is no guarantee of success then what’s the use of doing
anything?”
The teacher said. “You’d better not think like that...”
“What’s wrong with that... I have given so much hard work, so much money, so much times
if success is only a matter of chance, then what is the use of doing so much?” said Anderson,
being about to leave.

Paragraph 1:
Leading by the teacher, Anderson came to another room, opening the door. There lay a pile
of big red tomatoes. Anderson asked “Why are you showing me this?” Just then the teacher said.
“These tomatoes are the result of not giving up on growing plants. Similarly, if you keep doing theright things, chances are that you were bound to get success. But if you give up because of one or
two failures, life will reward you with nothing."
Paragraph 2:
It was at that very moment that Anderson read the lesson of success. He understood what
he had to do now and left with a different idea. He conducted some market research and started a
new business. No one could guarantee he would succeed this time but there was a chance. Like
Anderson, many people make their failure as a reason for not trying further. It is true that no
matter how hard we try, we cannot control the result. But only those who keep trying to get
success will get it tomorrow if not today. Every failure is a step toward success.

Betty and Kate were two sisters. Kate was so stuck with her sister Betty that she always
followed her elder sister everywhere. For example, when Betty was painting, she would paint by
her side. Every time, Betty looked at her angrily and said, “Couldn’t you find your own thing to
do?” This time, it was Kate’s first week when she learnt gymnastics, while Betty had done
gymnastics for the past two years.
Betty sat on the gym floor, waiting for her turn to do somersaults (翻筋斗). She frowned
(皱眉头) at her little sister across the room and thought why Kate couldn’t always find her own
thing to do? “Betty, you’re up!” called Betty’s instructor, Miss Carol. Betty came over and pushed
off with her legs and straightened her arms. She did one, two, three somersaults. Miss Carol
clapped and said, “Perfect!”
Betty noticed that Kate had stepped away from the younger group to watch Betty’s
somersaults. “Kate!” called Kate’s instructor, Miss Brown, from across the room. Kate didn’t
seem to hear her. Not until she was called three times did she run back to her group. “Your turn to
do somersaults.” Miss Brown put an arm around her. Kate walked to the mat with her face turning
red like a tomato. She bent down to start a somersault. When she rolled, she fell heavily on the
mat. Kids laughed in surprise at the noise.
Kate stood uncomfortably and then ran towards the restroom. She was gone from the gym.
After telling Miss Carol where she was going, Betty hurried to the restroom. She found Kate
crying hard. Betty put an arm around her sister. Seeing Betty, Kate cried even harder. Kate sniffed,
“I don’t want to do gymnastics any more.” Kate wiped away the tears with the back of her hand.
This was Betty’s chance. If Betty said nothing to her sister, Kate might quit gymnastics forever.

Betty believed that she could persuade her sister to return to the training. She knew how
excited Kate had been about joining in gymnastics. Every time Kate watched Betty doing
somersaults at the gym, the big toothy smile was always on her face. So Betty decided to cheer her
up. Casting a comforting smile at Kate, she helped her sister wipe out tears from her cheeks.
“You’re better at somersaults than I was on my first day of gymnastics,” Betty explained how
embarrassing her first somersault was. A smile took hold of Kate when the amusing scene came to
her.
Betty realized it was so good a chance to encourage her sister. Seeing a smile on Kate’s
face, Betty said, “What about giving it another try?” Kate smiled a little more and made up her
mind that she would not be a coward. Kate said, “OK!” Picking up all her courage, Kate walked
back into the gym, where she did much practice and finally succeeded in doing somersaults
perfectly under the guidance of Miss Brown. Nobody could feel more excited than her then. A

I am the kind of person who is shy and doesn’t express himself much among others. I spend
a significant amount of time on introspection(内省). I lack the ease to engage in conversations
with others. But I find this, on the other hand, can be an advantage.
Once, as a school boy, I wondered if I, such an introverted(内向的) person, would be
considered eccentric (古怪的). And I was even afraid that I could possibly get nowhere in my
study.
I went to school, where I was just an average student and struggled with shyness. My
parents had high expectations, hoping I would finally be able to secure the first position at the end
of the sixth grade. However, achieving that was no easy job. Given the keen competition betweenclassmates and my then situation, it was challenging to stand out. I inquired with my friend, Tom,
who consistently ranked first, and he revealed that his two aunts had been helping him, providing
tutoring support.
Asking for help was never easy for me; my shyness stopped me from seeking assistance. I
believed that I had to depend on myself—it was my sole responsibility to learn and educate
myself. This mindset surprisingly ignited(激发)a race within me to claim the top position in
my class. However, I realized there were barriers on my path--several subjects troubled me. And I
understood that achieving the first position would take a couple of years of hard work.
I embarked on(开始) this journey when I was in the fourth grade. Attention focused in
class and more time spent after class, I found I was gradually on the right track. By the fifth grade,
work on my study was progressing steadily and improvement was obvious. Even Tom showed his
surprise or I could say envy. But I knew my performance in writing still needed improving. And I
knew, though without additional support, I could count on myself.

The journey continued into the sixth grade. I, as usual, worked independently. And I found a
good thing. Isolated and single-minded, I could have all my attention focused on my study.
Evidently, that mattered a lot. I had managed to achieve good scores in writing and I was well on
my way. But that wasn’t enough to secure the first position yet. With the terminal exam
approaching, the classroom was just like a competitive arena, all my classmates preparing hard for
the academic battle. This, however, further stimulated the race within me. I, on my own initiative,
formulated strategies to win, resolving not to let anyone take the first position from me. When
finally the exam came, I, exceptionally calm and confident, gave it my all.
The day arrived when the headmaster declared the exam results. As I waited, the
headmaster began with the top performers in Grade one. The tension grew as each name was
called. Eventually, he announced the first position in the sixth grade. It was claimed by our class. I
strained my ears. He called MY name. It was ME! The first one in Grade six! I lived up to my
parents’ expectations! The feeling was indescribable, and I was just in a state of shock and
happiness. Teachers and classmates, including Tom, sent me their congratulations. Guess how I
reacted then? I shied away and slid back to the classroom. Over time, I have accepted who I am,
for being introverted, as it turns out, can be a facilitator rather than a killer of my
accomplishments.

In Whitney High School, Cerritos, California, which was known for its academic
excellence and competitive atmosphere, there were two friends, Sam and Emily, who were
preparing for their final exams. Sam and Emily were best friends and had always studied together.
Sam was naturally gifted in mathematics, while Emily excelled in history. As their final exams
approached, they promised to help each other with their weaker subjects.
They spent weeks preparing, exchanging notes, and quizzing each other. Sam helped Emily
understand complex mathematics problems, and Emily helped Sam remember historical dates and
events. Their friendship grew stronger as they worked towards their common goal.
However, as the exam day neared, Sam started to feel huge pressure. His parents had high
expectations, and he was afraid of letting them down. He began to doubt his abilities, especially in
history, which was his weakest subject. Emily noticed Sam’s anxiety and tried to reassure him, but
Sam’s stress only seemed to increase. The night before the history exam, Sam admitted to Emily
that he was considering cheating because he was so afraid of failing.
Emily was shocked and disappointed. She reminded Sam of all the hard work they had putin and the serious consequences cheating could have. She told him that it was better to try and fail
honestly than to succeed through dishonesty.
On the day of the history exam, Sam was extremely nervous. He remembered Emily’s
words and knew she was right. He decided to face the exam honestly, using what he had learned
from their study sessions.
During the exam, Sam struggled with some of the questions, but he did his best to answer
them without turning to cheating. When the exam ended, he felt a mix of relief and uncertainty. He
had stuck to his values, but he wasn’t sure if he had done enough to pass the subject.

Holland is a country where much of the land lies below sea level. Only great walls called
dikes keep the North Sea from rushing in and flooding the land. For centuries the people of
Holland have worked to keep the walls strong so that their country will be safe and dry. Even the
little children know the dikes must be watched every moment, and that a hole no longer than your
finger can be a very dangerous thing.
There lived a boy named Peter, Peter’s father was one of the men who tended the gates in
the dikes. One afternoon in the early fall, his mother called him from his play. “Come, Peter,” she
said. “I want you to go across the dike and take these cakes to your friend, the blind man. If you
go quickly, and do not stop to play, you will be home again before dark.”
The little boy was glad to go on such a job, and started off with a light heart. He stayed with
the poor blind man a little while to tell him about his walk along the dike and about the sun and
the flowers and the ships far out at sea. Then he remembered his mother’s wish that he should
return before dark and, saying goodbye to his friend, he set out for home.
A she walked along he sometimes stopped to pick the pretty blue flowers that grew beside
the road. Suddenly he heard a noise. It was the sound of trickling (流淌) water! He stopped and
looked down. There was a small hole in the dike, through which a tiny stream was flowing. Peter
understood the danger at once. If the water ran through a little hole it would soon make a larger
one, and the whole country would be flooded. In a moment he saw what he must do.

comes, even if I have to stay all night.”
It was long after sunset, and the anxious mother decided to go out and look for Peter.
Finally, Peter was found crouching on a stone on the side of the dike. He was not asleep, for every

“In school,” she told them, “we’ve been working on persuasive essays. My teacher said that

thing over and over again.”
“Well that’s certainly true,” her father said. But Ava wasn’t done yet. “My essay is calledWhy I Am Responsible and Ready for a Cell Phone,” she continued, smiling as she read.
It had been a problem for months. All three of her best friends received cellphones for
Christmas. But Ava’s parents would just shake their heads whenever she asked them.
For weeks it seemed like there was nothing she could do. But then, a week ago, they had
started working on writing persuasive essays at school. It occurred to her that why not write a
persuasive essay?
For a whole week, she’d worked on her persuasive essay, coming up with all the reasons
why she should have a cell phone. She was confident that this essay was the best thing that she
had ever written. There was no way her parents wouldn’t be persuaded.
“Alright Ava,” her mom said. “We both wanted to wait until you were older to get you a
cell phone.” “But, Ava, since you think you are ready for it, this weekend you shall get it. But we
want you to understand, a cellphone is not all just fun and games,” her Dad said. “This is a high

Ava wasn’t listening anymore. She was too busy trying to decide what apps she could download.

downloaded the games they recommended. Chatting and playing online, everything seemed so
wonderful. However, not all things would go as she wished. She began to lose interest in her study
and could hardly focus on what the teachers were saying. Even worse, she got a D in a recent
exam, which was alarming more than enough for her. She began to reflect on her recent behaviour.
She thought maybe, just maybe, she wasn’t ready for a phone yet. Maybe it was time to
return the phone to her parents. While she was thinking about returning the phone, she also
groaned about the fun that she would miss. What a dilemma, sighed Ava. Sensing Ava’s strange
behavior, her parents approached her to inquire what happened. She attempted to say something
but felt tongue-tied. Finally, she called up all her courage to tell them what had happened recently.
To her surprise, they didn’t blame her. On the contrary, they allowed her to keep her phone as long
as she did not commit the same mistake. After that, Ava finally understood what was her father’s
so-called responsibility.

During this past year I’ve had three instances of car trouble. Each time, when these things
happened, I was disgusted with the way people didn’t bother to help. The people at the gas stations
where I asked for a gas can told me they couldn’t lend it out “for safety reasons,” but that I could
buy a coverless can for $15.
But you know who came to my rescue all three times? Immigrants. Mexican immigrants.
None of them spoke any English.
One of those guys stopped to help me with the blowout even though he had his whole
family of four. I was on the side of the road for three hours with my, big Jeep. I put signs in the
windows, big signs that said, “NEED A JACK (千斤顶),” and offered money. Nothing. Right as I
was about to give up, a truck pulled over, and the guy jumped off.
He understood the situation and called for his daughter, who spoke English. He conveyed
through her that he had a jack. Then we were in business.
I started taking the wheel off, and, if you can believe it, I broke his tire iron. No worries: he
ran to the truck and handed it to his wife, and she was gone in a flash to buy a new one. She was
back in 15minutes. We finished the job with a little sweat, and I was a very happy man.
The two of us were filthy and sweaty. His wife produced a water jug for us to wash ourhands. I tried to put a $20 in the man’s hand, but he wouldn’t take it, so instead I went up to the
truck and gave it to his wife as quietly as I could. I asked the little girl where they lived, thinking
maybe I’d send them a gift for being so awesome. She said they lived in Mexico. They were in
Oregon so Mommy and Daddy could pick cherries for the next few weeks. Then they were going
to pick peaches, then go back home. After I said my goodbyes and started walking back to the
Jeep, the girl called out and asked if I’d had lunch.

Soon the boy and his two young sisters got attached to the old man. They visited him every
day, bringing him food and water, and chatting with him to keep his spirits up. The old man was
deeply touched by their kindness and generosity. He told them stories of his past adventures and
wisdom, which the children eagerly listened to. Over time, the old man recovered from his illness
and was able to walk again. He expressed his gratitude to the boy and his sisters, promising to
always be there for them whenever they needed help. The bond that had formed between them was
strong and unbreakable.

In fifth grade, my family moved across town. I hated being the new kid at school.
I was tall for my age and already wore a size nine shoe—how awkward! My ponytails (马
尾辫) and short bangs (刘海) seems quite different from others. I wanted to fit in, but in vain.
Theresa was thin but strong, with blond bangs and tightly pulled-back hair. For a reason
unknown to me, she decided that I was worthy of her attention, and every day she walked up to
me and kicked me in the back of the legs. Theresa was smart and quick. No teacher ever saw her,
and within a week, my legs were bruised (淤青) black and blue.
One day on the playground, as Theresa was about to close in on me again, I escaped away. I
glanced over one shoulder and, with relief, didn’t see her and thought she had given up. I stopped
abruptly and turned around, unaware that Theresa had been running full-speed toward me. She
didn’t expect my sudden stop and crashed into me and fell to the ground. A group of kids standing
nearby laughed. Angry, she got up and began to kick me. I couldn’t stand any more. So I made a
fist and swung my arm wildly. I caught Theresa in the nose, and she was bleeding. I didn’t know
which of us was more surprised. Then we made a big fight. Consequently, we were taken to the
principal’s office. He said we should be punished and then filled a form, I stared at his desk and
realized that I could read the form upside down. It reads, “Labor punishment for one week.”
Theresa leaned toward me and whispered, “I guess we should get a two-week labor
punishment.” I shook my head and said, “No, one week. I can read the form upside down.” Both
of us were surprised that we should talk with each other.注意:

We were arranged to take care of the flowers and plants in the school garden together. At
first, it felt awkward, like being forced to collaborate with your enemy. But as we started working
side by side, something unexpected happened. We began to talk, tentatively at first, but then more
freely. As we watered the plants and pulled out weeds, we shared stories about our families, our
hobbies, and our struggles. It turned out we both loved to read mystery novels and were fascinated
by space. Theresa confided in me about her parent’ recent divorce and I shared my own
insecurities about fitting in at school.
I was surprised that Theresa and I have so many things in common. Despite our rocky start,
we found solace in each other’s company and a shared understanding that transcended the petty
grievances of the past. As we laughed over inside jokes and shared secrets, I couldn’t help but feel
grateful for the unexpected turn of events that had brought us together. Perhaps, in the end, it was
the flowers in the school garden that taught us the true meaning of forgiveness and friendship. After this incident, I also learned to get along with other students, and also continue to integrate
into the whole class.

I cannot remember a point in my life when I desire anything other than becoming a teacher.
As a child I played school with my little cousins and friends just so I could practice for my future
career. But what I didn’t realize as a child was how expensive my dream was. I came from a poorfamily, and it seemed as though we always struggled to make ends meet. My dream of attending
the University of Connecticut seemed so out of reality but I wasn’t willing to settle for anything
less.
At the beginning of my senior year in high school, I began applying to colleges, but in my
heart I had already made my decision. The University of Connecticut was the one. But a huge
hurdle(障碍) stood between me and the dream—lack of financial resources.
At first, I was ready to give up. I mean, who was going to give me, the average high-school
girl, that kind of money? I wasn’t the smartest person in my class, not even close; but my heart
was in the right place, and I was determined. I knew that scholarships were only given to the really
smart kids, or so I thought. I applied for every scholarship I could get my hands on. What did I
have to lose? And then my teacher told me about the financial aid system. I applied, but l didn’t
think I would qualify for that either. After the holidays, my friends started receiving their
acceptance letters from colleges, and I eagerly anticipated mine. Finally, a letter arrived from the
University of Connecticut. Feelings of fear and joy overwhelmed me, but I was ready. I opened
the envelope with trembling hands as tears filled my eyes. I had done it! I had been accepted to the
University of Connecticut I cried for a while, feeling both extremely excited and afraid. I had
worked so hard to get accepted; what if I was denied admission because of my financial status?

Doubts clouded my mind as I into that new world, Parsons School of Design. But fate had a
plan, introducing me to Kathleen, who would become my guiding light.
I remember feeling out of place on my first day at Parsons, questioning everything from my
outfit to my abilities. As I walked in and scanned the classroom, my vision sharply stopped on one
person. Wow. She looked cool. I plopped myself down next to her and introduced myself as Dorri,
thrilled when she smiled and said, “Hi. I’m Kathleen.” That was all it took.
What a difference Kathleen made in my school life! Her confidence, discipline, and
responsibility were worlds away from my shaky, wild, and lazy nature. We became inseparable,
signing up for the same classes, and I was always trying to earn her approval.
One day the homework assignment was to create an exciting illustration based on a pair of
shoes. Bursting with ideas, I pulled out my favorite pair of antique thrift shop “old-lady shoes”
and poured my heart into the project. Proud of my work, I rushed to Kathleen’s apartment to show
her my creation, holding up my paper with glowing confidence. But Kathleen’s reaction was
unexpected, crushing my pride with a single question: “Is that the only drawing you did?”
“Well, yes,” I responded sheepishly, “Why?”
“Come on,” she said. “Let’s go to Washington Square Park and really do some drawings.” I
was puzzled, but when she led, I willingly followed, with my pad tucked under my arm.
As we made our way to the park, Kathleen enthusiastically talked about form, content, and
composition and stressed the significance of observing subjects closely. She described the shoes in
my drawing as the kind worn by elderly women who frequent the park to feed pigeons. That
moment, she taught me to look closely and recreate diligently.注意:

At the park, Kathleen pointed to a bench with a napping old woman and said, “Here, draw
her shoes repeatedly.” Eagerly, I settled onto a nearby bench, my sketchpad resting on my lap and
pencil poised to capture the old woman’s shoes. With every pencil stroke, I focused on every detail
I would have overlooked before — the worn leather, the frayed laces and the faded color. As I
sketched, it felt like I was uncovering stories of a life well - lived, the rest of the world fading into
the background. Kathleen, watching over my shoulder, offered tips and new angles to consider.
The afternoon sun began to set, casting golden light over my paper, as Kathleen and I shared
thoughts about our creations, our laughter mingling with the soft rustle of leaves.
The next day was the class feedback session. As I presented my drawings, anticipation curled in
my stomach. Initially, a hush fell over the room, everyone’s attention, every pair of eyes fixed on
the work I had poured my heart into. The teacher, surprised, nodded approvingly after studying mypieces. Soon the air buzzed with my classmates’ discussion, describing my work as “sensitive,”
“accurate,” and “beautifully stylized”. Each word warmed my heart. Glancing over at Kathleen,I
caught her eye, and she offered me a win k and a loving smile. At that moment, I knew I had
drawn an illustration to be proud of, one that touched something universally human and one
reflecting the journey Kathleen and I shared — a journey of art, friendship, and mutual
appreciation.One possible version :
At the park, Kathleen pointed to a bench with a napping old woman and said,“Here, draw
her shoes repeatedly.” Initially, I was taken aback by her suggestion. Drawing sleeping strangers
felt invasive. However, Kathleen assured me that observing people in public places was common
practice for artists and vital for capturing authenticity. Reluctantly, I began sketching, focusing on
every crease and detail of the woman’s worn-out shoes. With Kathleen’s gentle guidance, I soon
lost myself in the process, realizing the value of this exercise in honing my observational skills.
The next day was the class feedback session. Nervously, I presented my revised
illustration, now featuring meticulously drawn shoes inspired by the elderly woman in the park. As
my classmates and teacher praised the depth and realism of my work, I couldn’t help but feel
grateful for Kathleen’s guidance. Her unconventional approach had pushed me out of my comfort
zone, transforming my perspective on art and instilling in me a newfound appreciation for the
beauty of everyday life. From that day forward, Kathleen’s lessons became more than just artistic
guidance; they were a testament to the transformative power of friendship and mentorship.

Two-Man Ironman
On Sept. 17, 2022, Jeff and his son, Johnny, set out to begin the first of three legs of the
Ironman competition in Cambridge, where competitors must complete a 140 miles of swimming,
bicycling and running in under 17 hours. Johnny was born with cerebral palsy (脑瘫) and could
barely walk a few steps with the help of a rolling walker. But his dream of being a runner never
stopped.
Determined to show Johnny that he could pursue his dream of being an athlete, Jeff helped
him engage in running. They began waking up at 4 am, so Jeff could run while pushing his son in
a special wheelchair called a racing chair. Every morning, they drove themselves to run
increasingly longer distances. Soon, they were entering 5K races, then on to Ironman competition.
At first, Jeff would act as Johnny’s arms and legs, carrying the weight of his son. Gradually,
Johnny could even run a few miles using a rolling walker. The race began with a 2.4-mile swim in the Choptank River. Jeff helped Johnny into a
kayak (独木舟). With one end of a rope tied to a harness around his back and the other end to the
kayak, Jeff eased himself into the water. Swimming while dragging another person was tough
enough—Jeff also had to struggle with jellyfish. “I occupied my mind by counting the number of
times I got stung (蛰),” he said.
The pair completed the swim in 90 minutes, and it was on to the next leg: a 112-mile
bicycle ride. Their custom-built bike has an extra-strong frame and an additional seat in the back
for Johnny that faces backward, the better to cheer on other competitors.
After completing the tough bike section in roughly nine hours, they set their sights on the
final leg of the race—a 26.2-mile marathon with Jeff pushing Johnny in the racing chair. They’d
been competing for 10.5 hours, leaving another 6.5 hours to make their time.

But at Mile 19, Jeff began to panic, convinced they were going too slow. Somehow he foundthe energy to pick up the pace, puffing and panting. Spotting sweat trickling down from his
father’s wrinkled forehead, Johnny offered to run on his own with his rolling walker. Jeff stopped
to help Johnny out of his racing chair, handing the rolling walker to his son. After years of
painstaking work, Johnny increased his step counts and was determined to finish his races by
himself. Johnny saw the clock ticking down and worried they wouldn’t make the cutoff. “Not
because I wouldn’t get my moment,” he said, “but because Dad had worked so hard.”
After 16 hours, 55 minutes and 35 seconds, father and son crossed the finish line together.
As the crowd engulfed and cheered on an overwhelmed Johnny, a weary Jeff kept a low profile.
“My father didn’t want his finish line moment,” said Johnny, tears in eyes. “He wanted it to be
mine. What he taught me is that it’s much easier to take on life one step at a time than it is to think
about the huge task ahead of you.” Small steps lead to bigger steps. To Johnny, the final mile
represents what his whole life with cerebral palsy has been about hard work, dedication, optimism,
and determination.

Teachers are a gift, especially Troy’s teacher, Donna. She always goes above and beyond
for her students, but what she did for Troy’s family is truly beyond selflessness but a miracle(奇

Donna is one of those teachers who pay close attention to the students in their classroom.
She began to notice something odd in one of her elementary students, Troy. He was not active in
class like he had been. Troy used to be a passionate student in class, engaging with teachers and
his friends. Being a helping hand to the teacher and classmates, Troy was always welcomed by
everybody. However, he was all of a sudden so shut down and his behavior was simply not the
same. He seemed to be silent all the time, and his eyes lost light of desire for knowledge and
passion for any activities. Donna grew very concerned and wondered if there was something going
on that affected his performance at school. So, she reached out to Troy’s mom to express her
concerns.
And that was when she discovered something wrong. For the past year, his mom had been
in stage-five kidney(肾)failure. She was in pain every day and desperately needed a new kidney.
But she had a rare blood type, so finding a match for a kidney transplant was virtually impossible.
Her condition had been a very long and anxious journey. It had been so painful for the family, and
it had definitely made an impact on Troy. And in class, he had been silently carrying the pain his
mom was going through at home.
The news broke Donna’s heart. She knew that she just had to do something. She was there
as a loving friend to help Troy with his studies, but she was also there for his mom. Donna
researched how to become a kidney donor and discovered that she had the same rare blood type as
Troy’s mom. She got tested and, surprisingly, she was a match.

talked myself out of the idea. It was too much work to start a new career. I would be crazy to give
up my well-paid job with health insurance. I would have to go to school again. It would take too
long to build a clientele (客户群). Its disadvantages outweighed its advantages!

【参考范文】
I had nearly forgotten about my wish when I had a dream one night. I dreamed that I was
washing a woman’s hair. We were chatting away about something. I brought her back to my chair
to wrap the cape around her, and I caught a glimpse of myself in the mirror. I had a giant smile on
my face. I felt happier than I had been in a long time. When I woke, the feeling stayed with me —
until I remembered that I had to get up and go to work.
On my way to work, the happy “I” in my dream kept shouting, “I am to be a hairstylist.” I gave
notice that same month, went back to school full-time, and in less than a year was working behind
the chair. The very first week of work, after shampooing a woman’s hair, I walked her over to my
styling chair and caught a glimpse of myself in the mirror. Just as in my dream, I was happier than
I’d been in a long time. But this time, I didn’t have to wake up. This time, I was living my dream.
