Summer Reading Challenge
The Summer Reading Challenge, presented by the Reading Agency and funded by Arts Council England, is
the UK’s biggest reading for pleasure programme for primary school-aged children. 1 in 5 children cannot read
well by the age of 11. The Summer Reading Challenge, with the support of public libraries, is to change this!
The Challenge’s launching and finishing dates vary by location, so we recommend getting in touch with your
local library service to find out more about the Challenge in your area.
How the Summer Reading Challenge Works
Children sign up for free through their local library and receive a fun pack.
Children set a reading goal and borrow books of their choice during the summer.
Library staff and volunteers help children to discover new books that suit their interests and reading level and
run a programme of free themed activities in the library.
Children who meet their reading goal and complete the Challenge are presented with a certificate and a medal.

I have worked as a keeper at the National Zoo, Paris for 11 years. Spot and Stripe are the first tiger cubs that
have ever been born here. Globally, a third of Sumatran cubs in zoos don't make it to adulthood, so I decided to
give them round-the-clock care at home.
I've got two children—the younger one, Kynan, was extremely happy about the tigers arriving - but all of us
really looked forward to being part of their lives and watching them grow. I wasn't worried about bringing them
into my home with my wife and kids. These were cubs. They weighed about 2.5 kg and were so small that there
was absolutely no risk.
As they grew more mobile, we let them move freely around the house during the day, but when we were asleep
we had to contain them in a large room, otherwise they'd get up to mischief. We'd come down in the morning to
find they'd turned the room upside down, and left it looking like a zoo.
Things quickly got very intense due to the huge amount of energy required to look after them. There were some
tough times and I just felt extremely tired. I was grateful that my family was there to help. We had to have a bit of a
production line going, making up “tiger milk”, washing baby bottles, and cleaning the floors.
When Spot and Stripe were four months old, they were learning how to open doors and jump fences, and we
knew it really was time for them to go. It was hard for us to finally part with them. For the first few days, Kynan
was always a bit disappointed that the cubs weren't there.
I'm not sad about it. I'm hands-on with them every day at the zoo, and I do look back very fondly on the time
that we had them.
24. Why did the author bring the tiger cubs home?
A. To ensure their survival. B. To observe their differences.
C. To teach them life skills. D. To let them play with his kids.
25. What do the underlined words “get up to mischief” mean in paragraph 3?
A. Behave badly. B. Lose their way. C. Sleep soundly. D. Miss their mom.
26. What did the author think of raising the tiger cubs at home?
A. Boring. B. Tiring.C. Costly.D. Risky.
27. Why did the author decide to send Spot and Stripe back to the zoo?
A. They frightened the children. B. They became difficult to contain.
C. They annoyed the neighbours. D. They started fighting each other.C
Your morning coffee could be used to make a pair of sneakers, a Finnish startup says. Rens can make new
shoes from old coffee, cutting back on waste in terms of space in landfills and methane (甲烷) emissions.
5, 000 supporters promised to invest over $500, 000 to see the sneakers come to life. Up to 21 cups of coffee
and 6 recycled plastic bottles are used in each pair of shoes. The sneakers come in 9 different colors and are
waterproof and super comfortable. In addition, the sneakers can absorb a peculiar smell, and they are designed to be
taken off and put on easily.
Jesse Tran, the co-founder of Rens, wanted to do something to help reduce people’s carbon “footprint”, while
offering a pair of everyday shoes that is functional and fashion-forward. “With the improvement of environmental
awareness, the knowledge of the circular economy is also increasing. Shoes made from recycled coffee pieces may
seem novel to some people, but we wholeheartedly believe that this is just the beginning of a revolution in the
clothing technology and manufacturing industry,” said Tran.
So far, 250, 000 water bottles and 750, 000 cups of coffee have been turned into these shoes. The small coffee
solid pieces are combined in a low-heat environment with recycled plastic to create a coffee yarn in the upper
section of the shoes, while recycled plastic is made into the other parts, and the tree sap (液) that biodegrades (降
解) creates the outer sole (鞋底).
While the price is as high as $119 on Amazon, they offer free delivery everywhere, a l-year guarantee on the
waterproofing technology, and a 30-day money-back guarantee as well.
28. What is the advantage of the sneakers made from coffee?
A. Easy to wash. B. Able to afford. C. Comfortable to wear. D. Hard to damage.
29. What can we infer according to Jesse Tran?
A. Action must be taken for environmental protection.
B. Manufacturing industries are promising in recycling.
C. Shoes made from recycled coffee is out of date.
D. The circular economy is unfamiliar lo the public.
30. What can be made into the outer sole of the sneaker?
A. The small coffee pieces. B. The combined coffee yarn.
C. The recycled water bottles. D. The biodegraded tree sap.
31. What is the suitable title of the passage?
A. Shoes Made in a Green Way B. Coffee Recycled in a Creative Way
C. The Revolution of Manufacturing Industry D. The Improvement of Environmental AwarenessD
Recent rapid economic development, changes to agriculture and globalization have impacted the food and
drink we consume. At the same time, there have been declining numbers of manual jobs, changes to transport,
decreasing levels of physical activity and an increase in inactive habits(including screen time). Advances in
technology have also increased time spent using screens, both at work and during leisure time. Therefore, artificial
lighting is a modern wonder that we take for granted every day—for its convenience and its harmful effects.
According to a pair of recent studies, the problems extend beyond light pollution and into the region of
childhood obesity and perhaps even cancer. In a paper published in the journal PLOS ONE, researchers from the
Queensland University of Technology studied the sleep, activity and light exposure of 3 to 5-year-olds from six
childcare centres in Brisbane, Australia. When they recorded body mass index (指数) and checked back in 12
months later, they found that slimmer children received the most light exposure in the afternoon. Furthermore,
moderate light exposure early in the day(and greater exposure overall) correlated to increased body mass index a
year later.
The report found strong evidence that spending more time in front of the television or on a computer(at work
or at home) increases the risk of weight gain. This finding was particularly strong in children.
Obviously, just looking at a screen won’t lead to weight gain, but being inactive for long periods of time can
shift your “energy balance”. Sitting long can also affect your appetite, making it harder to recognise when you are
full.
Screen time can also increase exposure to junk food and drink ads targeting kids. It’s also quite common to
snack while watching screens—being distracted can lead to unconsciously eating more.
The findings in this report suggest that we should try to limit our screen time and maintain an energy balance. This
is something that we can make a conscious effort to be careful of with regular exercise and less screen time.
32. What does the author intend to do in the first paragraph?
A. To complain about a natural phenomenon.
B. To state the background of the study.
C. To question a newly-developed trend.
D. To criticize the speed of development.
33. How did researchers from the Queensland University of Technology perform the experiment?
A. By comparing data of the same group.
B. By referring to the former findings.
C. By tracking the habit of the objects.D. By consulting distinguished experts.
34. What may cause harmful impacts on teenagers when they are using screens?
A. The loss of balance.
B. Standing too long inactively.
C. Too much energy consumption.
D. The possibility of eating too much.
35. Where is the text most likely from?
A. A story-telling blog.
B. A historical novel.
C. A lifestyle magazine.
D. An entry of a diary.

On the first day of school, I stared in awe at the huge buildings. This high school was definitely bigger than
the one I had previously attended.
This was my second year of high school, but my first year of school in St. Louis. I had decided the night
before that I would be much happier in a new school if I made friends that were so-called “popular”. Getting in
with the right group of people would make my life a whole lot better. I even bought a new outfit and had my hair
styled just so the first day would be perfect.
Scared, yet anxious to begin my new life, I walked up the stairs to the front door. The halls were packed with
kids yelling and laughing and telling stories of their summer adventures. My first class was geometry, but where
was that?
I was standing in the hall looking confused, when a short, blond girl wearing glasses came up and asked, “Are
you new? You look lost. Do you need help? My name is Diane. What’s yours?” Even though she seemed a bit
strange, definitely not the kind of person I wanted to be associated with, I decided to answer her anyway. I was,
after all, lost.
After exchanging names. I followed her up the stairs and down a hallway on the right, making polite
conversation the whole way. When we reached my room she said, “Well, here you are. Welcome to JFK, and I hope
your day goes all right.”
I said thanks and waved good-bye. Once inside the classroom, I saw one big group of people huddled around
someone who seemed to be telling some sort of story. I walked over and got close enough to overhear. All eyes
were glued to the guy in the middle of the circle who was wearing a letter jacket covered with patches. I decided
that this guy was popular, so I managed to get a seat right next to him. I said, “Hi, my name is Lisa and I’m new
here.” He said, “Johnny.”
注意:1.所续写短文的词数应为150左右:2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置答题。At the end of the class, I turned to him and asked, “I’m not sure where my next class is, could you help me?”
