20.Which country has introduced a basic income?
A.Finland. B.Spain. C.Scotland.
【答案】17.A 18.C 19.B 20.A
【原文】
Did you know that more than three billion people live on less than $2.50 a day and an estimated 1.3 billion
live in extreme poverty, making $1.25 or less daily? Extreme poverty is a global issue, but different poverty levels
make it difficult to compare them. (17) For example, someone living in America earning $5 an hour may be a lot
poorer than someone earning $1 an hour in Africa. The World Bank has been monitoring the poverty line since it
was created. (18) It estimates that in 1990, 36% of the world’s population was below the poverty line. However,
two decades later, this number had been reduced to 18%. (19) By 2030, it wants this number to be at 3%. Althoughthis may seem like an impossible task, they are going to focus on fast income growth for the bottom 40%. They
also want to see a rise in shared prosperity. One idea that is gaining popularity is the idea of a basic income, with
organizations such as the Omidyar Network supporting it. (20) This would mean everyone got paid, regardless
of whether they have a job or not. Finland ran a trial for two years with great success, (20) and after the
coronavirus, many countries including Spain and Scotland are seriously considering introducing one. Senior
officials within the United Nations have also voiced their support, and urged other countries to look at it as a
solution to many world issues.

When clouds of radiation began streaming into the air around the Fukushima nuclear plant, 160, 000
residents were told to simply cut and run. However, it seems only 159, 998 residents listened. The other two
— Naoto Matsumura and Sakae Kato — remained. The two men would give up everything rather than let
other beings starve.
Living within the 12.5-mile exclusion zone around the damaged reactor, the two men, unrelated to one
another, both live alone while taking care of dozens of animals that were left behind when the evacuation
order was given.
Reports from Reuters and DW state that 57-year-old Kato has 41 cats who live with him in his home in
the mountains—along with a dog he adopted named Pochi. Kato says he will stay with his cats and ensure
they are comfortable all through their lives.
Matsumura left the city at first, but returned shortly after for his own animals. Once returned, the now
55-year-old realized that everyone else's pets and livestock were still there, so he began taking care of abroad community of animals including pigs, cats, dogs, ponies, ostriches, and cows.
GNN reported that he went back inside the exclusion zone and realized local pet dogs had not eaten in
several days. After it became clear that no-one was coming back to the neighborhood, he went around
unchaining dogs from trees, letting cows out of their barns, and feeding anything in need, earning him the
nickname the “Guardian of Fukushima's Animals”.
Everything both Kato and Matsumura are doing is risky. Though proud of what Kato and Matsumura
have done, their friends and families hope that they can leave the dangerous area. Yet they seem to be
determined in what they are doing and both plan to stay there with their animals, come what may.
24.What does the phrase “other beings” in paragraph 1 probably refer to?
A.Animals. B.People. C.Plants. D.Residents.
25.What kind of person is Sakae Kato?
A.Curious. B.Caring. C.Ambitious. D.Lonely.
26.What do we know about Naoto Matsumura?
A.He is 57 years old.
B.He knows Kato very well.
C.He has dozens of animals to look after.
D.He lives 12. 5 miles from the exclusion zone.
27.What can we infer about the two men from the text?
A.They will follow the advice of their families.
B.They will call on more people to protect animals.
C.They stay in the mountains to enjoy loneliness.
D.They have no regard for their own safety.
【答案】24. A 25. B 26. C 27. D

More than 140 sign languages are used today, primarily by deaf communities around the world.Like
spoken languages, each sign language has its own grammar, vocabulary and other special features. For
example,American Sign Language is unintelligible(无法了解的)to British Sign language. In fact,AmericanSign language has more in common with French Sign Language, largely because French educators played a
key role in helping get deaf schools founded in the United States during the 19th century.
There haven't been a lot of comparisons of sign languages.University of Texas,Austin linguist Justin
Powers and his colleagues aim to address that information gap.In order to study the question of sign language
evolution, they first collected a database of manual alphabets from dozens of different sign languages around
the world. So a manual alpha-bet is kind of a subsystem within a sign language that is used to represent a
written language. And there's a hand shape that corresponds to each letter.
To uncover relationships between the alphabets% the researchers used the same methods that biologists
use to figure out relationships between different species, based on their DNA.The methods grouped sign
languages in this study into five main European lineages(谱系).And those were Austrian origin,British
origin,French origin,Spanish and Swedish.Power says manual alphabets from Austria,France and Spain could
date back to one-handed manual alphabets from 16th- and 17th-century Spain. But each of those lineages
evolved independently of each other.
The study also confirmed the French origins of American Sign Language and those of other
countries, including Mexico,Brazil and the Netherlands.Surprisingly, the Austrian manual alphabet influenced
sign languages as far away as Russia. But while this lineage has largely died out, remains of it live on in
Icelandic Sign language today.
Power says future research comparing the vocabularies of different sign languages could provide even
more clues about how they've changed over time.Understanding how sign languages evolve would tell us a
lot about the way that language,in general, evolves.
28.What can we know about American Sign Language? ______
A. It was created by French educators.
B. It is less related to French Sign language.
C. It was further developed before the 19th century.
D. It has little in common with British Sign Language.
29.What is special about a manual alphabet? ______
A. Every letter means a hand gesture.
B. It is used to replace the written language.
C. Every letter is the same as the normal alphabet.
D. It is used together with the shape of mouth.
30.What does the author think of the effect of the Austrian manual alphabet? ______A. Worrying. B. Astonishing.
C. Moving. D. Disappointing.
31.What does the last paragraph mainly talk about? ______
A. The changes of different sign languages.
B. The evolution of different sign languages.
C. The meaning of researching sign languages.
D. The vocabulary of different sign languages.
【答案】28. D 29. A 30. B 31. C
【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了不同国家手势语的起源及演变。
28.D推理判断题。根据第一段中的"For example,American Sign Language is unintelligible(无法了解的)to
British Sign language."(例如,美国手语是英国手语无法理解的。)可知,美国手势语与英国手势语没有什
么共同之处。故选D。
29.A细节理解题。根据第二段最后两句"So a manual alpha-bet is kind of a subsystem within a sign language
that is used to represent a written language. And there's a hand shape that corresponds to each letter."(所以手势语
字母表是手语中的一个子系统用来表示书面语言。每个字母对应一个手的形状。)可知,手势语字母表的
特别之处在于它的每个字母都与一种手势相对应。故选A。
30.B推理判断题。根据第四段第二句"Surprisingly,the Austrian manual alphabet influenced sign languages as
far away as Russia."(令人惊讶的是,奥地利的手语字母表影响了远在俄罗斯的手语。)可知,作者认为奥
地利手势语字母表的影响是令人吃惊的。结合选项 A.Worrying.令人担心的;B.Astonishing.令人吃惊的;
C.Moving.令人感动的;D.Disappointing.令人失望的。故选B。
31.C段落大意题。根据最后一段内容"Power says future research comparing the vocabularies of different sign
languages could provide even more clues about how they've changed over time.Understanding how sign languages
evolve would tell us a lot about the way that language,in general, evolves.(鲍尔说,未来比较不同手语词汇的研
究可以提供更多线索,说明它们是如何随着时间的推移而变化的。理解手语是如何进化的将会告诉我们很
多关于语言进化的方式。)"可知,本段主要介绍了研究手势语的意义。故选C。

A study led by Plana-Ripoll, a doctor at Aarhus University in Denmark, tries to deal with a fundamental
question that has bothered researchers for more than a century—what exactly causes mental illness?
In the hope of finding the answer, scientists have piled up a large amount of data over the past decade, through
studies of genes and brain activity. They have found that many of the same genes underlie seemingly distinct
disorders and that changes in the brain’s decision-making systems could be involved in many conditions. The researchers are also rethinking theories of how our brains go wrong. The idea that mental illness can be
classified into distinct, separate categories like “anxiety” has been disproved to a large extent. Instead, recently
they’ve found that disorders shade into each other, and there are no hard dividing lines.
The researchers are trying to understand the biology that underlies mental illness. They have a few theories.
Perhaps there are several dimensions of mental illness, so depending on how a person scores on each dimension,
they might be more likely to have some disorders than others. An alternative idea is that there is a single factor that
makes people easier to suffer from mental illness in general. What disorder they develop is then determined by
other factors. Both ideas are being taken seriously though the former one is more widely accepted by the
researchers.
The details are still unclear, but most researchers agree that one thing is specific: The old system of
categorizing mental disorders into neat boxes does not work. They are also hopeful that, in the long run, replacing
this framework with one that is grounded in biology will lead to new drugs and treatments. The researchers aim to
reveal, for instance, the key genes, brain regions and neurological processes involved in psychopathology(精神病
理学), and target them with treatments. Although it might take a while to get there, they are long-term optimistic if
the field really does its work.
32.What aspect of mental illness has been puzzling researchers according to the text?
A.Its symptoms. B.Its roots.
C.Its categories. D.Its theories.
33.What have the researchers found from the recent study?
A.There exist links between mental disorders.
B.Brain function has little to do with mental illness.
C.Mental illness is classified into different categories.
D.Genes are completely different in distinct mental disorders.
34.Which one is more widely accepted by the researchers according to paragraph 4?
A.The theory of genetic influences.
B.The belief of brain abnormalities.
C.The concept of multiple dimensions.
D.The idea of the determined risk factor.
35.What can we learn about mental illness from the text?
A.Hunting for its biology might help.
B.Its genes are too complex to study.C.Scientists are clear about its details.
D.Its new drugs could be available soon.
【答案】32. B 33. A 34. C 35. A

第二节(满分25分)
67.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Walking along the Erie Canal, I saw two women coming towards me. I thought they must be mother and
daughter. The daughter reached into her pocket and handed her mom a snack. They both laughed.
I started to think of my mother. She got dementia (痴呆)in the early stage. How could I leave her to take care
of herself? I was a wife and a mother who worked full-time. The answer was simple: I couldn't.I knew I had to act
to keep her safe just like she protected me when she took my tiny hand and walked me to the kindergarten.
I came up with the idea of seeking a college student for help. Living close to a college, I contacted someone in
Student Services. I needed a responsible student to live with my mom free of charge. Luckily, the college
representative found one for me and got us in contact.
We met at a local store. Walking in, I saw her before she saw me. On the table sat the College' Admissions
Handbook. “Could she be as nervous as I am?” I asked myself. With every step I took forward,I felt another
pushing me back.
“Hi, I'm Hannah,” I said, reaching out my hand.
“Amanda,” she said with a smile.
We both felt a bit awkward, but I still asked, “Tell me something about yourself.” “I'm from Kenya. I hope to
go to college to be a nurse, but I can't afford the dorm,” she said, tears in her eyes.
I took a deep breath and said slowly,“My mom has dementia. I need someone to be my eyes and ears. That
person would get a free room and free access to the Internet, living with my mother.”
More tears from Amanda. Then she said, “I know you don't know me, but I'm very responsible.I would never
do any harm to your mother, and I want so badly to be a nurse.” We talked a lot and finally I believed her and gave
her my mother’s address.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。The first night I went to my mom’s, I was very anxious.
____________________________________________________________________________________________
____________________________________________________________________________________________
____________________________________________________________________________
Amanda met me at the door.
____________________________________________________________________________________________
____________________________________________________________________________________________
____________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
The first night I went to my mom’s, I was very anxious. Was Amanda everything her references said? Did I
find a good solution? There were butterflies fluttering in my stomach. Unannounced, I stopped by the next day and
stole a glance at the large picture window. There sat my mom having lunch with Amanda. I moved away from the
window and rang the doorbell so I wouldn’t make anyone frightened when using my house key. “It's me -Han-rah!”
I shouted.
Amanda met me at the door. Amanda said, “Are you hungry? I made plenty of food for your mother.” I joined
them at the table, where conversation flowed freely, Amanda was more than considerate beyond her promise. When
Amanda graduated, I welcomed another four nurses who kept my mom company. My mother en-joyed her old age
in the company of the kind nurses. I was thankful for what all of them had done. A simple walk by the canal that
day, observing another mother and daughter, helped me see that I had done the best I could.
