You Can Finally Renew Your Passport Online — Here’s How
Are you finally ready to book that wonderful trip that you’ve been daydreaming about? But before you go,
renewing your passport is a troublesome in-person process until now. Fortunately, the government just launched an
online passport-renewal program that will make it a lot easier.
Can anyone renew their passport online?
As of right now, no. There are a few restrictions that customers need to consider before attempting this. To
renew your passport online:
You must be a domestic citizen.
The passport you’re renewing needs to have been issued between 2009 and 2015.
You must be 25 years old or older.
You are not changing your name, gender, date of birth or place of birth.
You are not living in a foreign country.
You are applying for a regular (tourist) passport, not a special-issue (diplomatic, official or service) passport.
You can upload a digital passport photo.
How much does renewing a passport online cost?
It costs $130 to apply — which is the standard amount for a routine passport renewal at, say, the post office
or other government office. Right now, the only form of available payment is a credit card.
How long does it take to get a passport that’s been renewed online?
The process takes six to eight weeks, just like a routine passport renewal in person or via mail. If you need
your passport quickly, mail in your application with the extra $60 fee for expedited (加快的) service, and you will
get it in two to three weeks.
Can you use your current passport while waiting for the new one?
No. Similar to when you apply for a passport by mail, you’ll have to send your old passport back, so don’t
plan on traveling out of the country during the time you’re waiting for your renewed passport. The government will
eventually send back the old passport to keep for your records, but the new one will arrive first.
21. Who can apply for online passport renewal?
A. An official on business.
B. A 20-year-old domestic citizen.
C. A boy who has just changed his name.
D. An old lady with her passport issued in 2012.
22. How much does it cost to apply for and get a new passport within a month?
A. $25.
B. $60.
C. $130.
D. $190.
23. Where does the text most probably appear?
A. In a research paper.
B. On a travel website.
C In a school textbook.
D. On a roadside billboard.

California’s Hidden Gems
Lost Coast
An experienced hiker’s paradise, California’s Lost Coast stretches from Shelter Cove to Mattole Beach, about
75 miles. If that’s too ambitious, drive the Mattole Loop instead, stopping to explore Humboldt Redwoods State
Park, home to Avenue of the Giants, and the town of Ferndale, recognized by its Victorian architecture.
Mon o Lake
Otherworldly in a number of ways, Mono Lake is an ancient saline lake on California’s eastern edge. No fish
swim here, but brine shrimp do, and those draw myriad bird species that migrate along the Pacific Flyway. Distinct
limestone formations called tufa stand out— literally and figuratively— at Mono Lake.
Point Reyes
Point Reyes is pleasantly quiet, especially along its coastal trails. Look for wildflowers and endemic animals
on Tomales Point Trail— which rambles for nearly 10 miles on this special, skinny peninsula, delivering gorgeous,
foggy views of the Ocean.
Trinity Alps
Another stunning preserve in Northern California, Trinity Alps Wilderness awe s visitors with its alpine lakes
and granite peaks. It’s an excellent option for day hiking, like Hidden Lake Trail, but also for multiday backpacking
trips such as the 18.6- mile Canyon Creek Lakes Trail.
Shasta Lake
This sprawling reservoir might best be experienced via houseboat. Once on board your floating
accommodations, try your hand at all the water sports: swimming, water skiing, fishing, jet skiing, and more, all
with regal Mount Shasta in the background.
21. What can you do in Point Reyes?
A. Enjoy fantastic views.   B. Visit a natural preserve.
C. Climb sharp peaks.      D. Try some water sports.

Chichen Itza, Mexico
Price from: $20
Age suitable: 8+
When: All year around
The UNESCO world heritage-listed Maya city of Chichen Itza is one of Mexico's most amazing
attractions, where you can see stunning, monumental buildings built between AD 750 and 1200, including
the Castillo pyramid and the Temple of a Thousand Warriors.
Getting there & doing it
Chichen Itza lies 80 miles from Tulum on the road to Merida. Hotels and tour operators organize
tours here, but it's better to hire a car and go independently. Understanding a little about the pre-
Columbian Maya really brings these sites to life. You could read Michael Coe's *The Maya*, and/or
Joyce Kelly's *An Archaeological Guide to Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula* before you go.
The site can be explored comfortably in 2 hours. For refueling after, head 40 km east to Cancun for
authentic Mayan organic foods.
While you're there
Allow some time to drive on to Merida, the “ white City", an old and very Mexican city with
beautiful churches and great markets. Also stop by Cenote Ik-Kil for a swim with a difference.
When to do it
The site is open all year around, seven days a week. Gates open at 8 am and close at 5 pm. The
rainy season from May through October sees the fewest visitors to Mayan Riviera. The dry season -
November through April - gets busy. If you can, avoid peak season in December to January, when it gets
very crowded, especially around Christmas and New Year.
21. What is recommended to do before visiting Chichen Itza?
    A. Hire a local guide.
    B. Take a guided tour.
    C. Watch a documentary about Mexico.
    D. Read specific books about the Maya civilization.
22. What is suggested for a post-visit activity after exploring Chichen Itza?
    A. Driving 40 km east for Mayan foods.
    B. Attending a cultural show in Tulum.
    C. Paying a visit to the Castillo pyramid.
    D. Exploring the Temple of a Thousand Warriors.
23. When is the best time to visit Chichen Itza if you want to avoid crowds?
    A. December to January.
    B. November through April.
    C. May through October.
    D. All year around.
