专题05 读后续写

1.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Little free libraries have been dotting communities around the globe since the first one was set up in Hudson,
Wisconsin in 2009. During the pandemic (疫情), many people turned these libraries into little free stores to help
neighbors in need. The stores were filled with canned food, peanut butter, and toilet paper. In Australia, a mother
and her daughter decided to open a free plant stand to share flowers and joy with her community.
Because of the pandemic, people were enclosed and lonely. This was certainly true of Vicky Robinson and
her daughter Rachel, who live in Redan, a suburb of Ballarat in Victoria.
The pair watched people walking by who looked sad and decided to come up with a way to cheer them up.
“So we thought, ‘what can we create through our home education that can put a smile on people’s faces?’” the
mother and daughter said.
Vicky looked at her front grassland and flowering rose bushes and suddenly had a bright idea. Understanding
that gardening was a natural treatment that helped her relax, she came up with the idea for a plant exhibition stand
that was like a little free plant library.
Her husband is a cupboard maker so he built a two-storied stand on their property line and filled it with
young plants and succulents (多肉植物) reproduced from their own plants. In bold letters, there is a sign that reads,
“Need a plant? Take a plant. Have a plant? Leave a plant.”
Despite having lived in Redan for 30 years, Vicky said that she never felt connected with her community
before. There is little cost involved in setting up the little free plant library. “It’s all worth it just to see their smiles.
We have developed trust with the community,” she said. “It leaves a legacy. It creates a bond in a circle, from
generation to generation.”
注意:1.续写词数应为150 左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

Jenny, an eleven-year-old girl, had always been shy and quiet. She rarely spoke up in class and often found
herself feeling invisible. One day, her teacher announced a school talent show. Jenny loved singing but had never
sung in front of anyone except her family. The idea of performing in front of the whole school terrified her.
That evening, Jenny told her mom about the talent show. “I think you should participate,” her mom said
gently. “But I’m too scared,” Jenny replied. “What if I make a mistake and everyone laughs at me?”
Her mom thought for a moment and then handed Jenny a small, beautiful necklace. “This belonged to your
grandmother,” she said. “She wore it whenever she felt nervous or scared. It gave her the courage to face her fear.
Maybe it can do the same for you.”
Jenny decided to give it a try. Over the next few weeks, she practiced singing every day, wearing the
necklace for courage. She still felt nervous, but the thought of her grandmother’s strength helped her push through
her fear.
On the day of the talent show, Jenny’s heart was pounding as she stood backstage. She could hear the
audience talking and laughing, and her legs felt like jelly (果冻). But then she touched the necklace and took a deep
breath. She walked onto the stage, the bright lights making it hard to see the crowd, and began to sing.

“The adventure race is starting in five minutes, everyone! Please get ready!” the teacher announced
cheerfully. On a Saturday morning, I was stretching and warming up with the rest of my teammates as the cool
morning breeze brushed against my skin. My school had planned an adventure race for my level and we were
required to take pictures of our surroundings with a camera during the race.
Before I knew it, the adventure race was starting as teams started gathering at the checkpoints. It was not
long before the sound of the whistle was heard. Determinedly, my team members, Irene, Jennie and Lucas started
venturing out in the forest. Walking purposefully onto the path of the forest, we took numerous photographs of the
greenery around us. Not too long after, we started feeling anxious as we could no longer see any trees that were
marked, indicating that we lost the path we were supposed to follow.
Finding ourselves in a fix, we were worried about how we were going to get back on track and were
panicking. “Perhaps... we can look through the photographs we took to see our previous location,” Jennie suggested
while holding the camera. Needless to say, we readily agreed to her idea and started looking through the pictures.
Little did we know that “someone” was stealthily spying us. Out of nowhere, our camera was suddenly taken away!
Apparently nobody was there and we stood in shocked silence, feeling thunderstruck.
Just then, I heard the rustling (沙沙声) of trees. Confused, I looked up at the trees. Then, I saw it! A flash
appeared on one of the tree branches, and I gestured my teammates to keep quiet. I was astonished by the sight that
greeted me. A monkey was holding up our camera on the tree.

On a fresh autumn morning, the air was filled with the scent of fallen leaves and the promise of adventure as
I made my way from Canmore to New York City. My heart was flipping with anticipation, each beat echoing the
thrill and pleasure of attending a famous art studio in the heart of the city and trading my paintings.
I imagined the busy streets of the city, the towering skyscrapers, and the creative energy that pulsed through
every corner. This studio was more than just an opportunity; it was a dream that would come true, and a milestone I
had been eagerly waiting for.
As I climbed into the taxi to the airport, the driver, a friendly man with a warm smile, greeted me with a
cheerful “Good morning”. I responded with a nod, my mind already racing ahead to the studio in that city.
“First-time travel?” he asked, catching my gaze in the rear-view mirror (后视镜). “Yes, a big-deal trip in
New York,” I replied, my voice tinged with excitement. The driver smiled with a knowing look and said, “Ah, New
York! Enjoy your flight. Just watch out for the traffic!”
As we chatted, I felt a sense of calm wash over me. The driver showed good manners and the sound of the
engine was comforting. And I allowed myself to relax into the moment. The view of Canmore slowly gave way to
the open road, and I watched as the landscape transformed, each mile bringing me closer to my destination.
But my excitement quickly turned to upset as I stood in the security line at Calgary International Airport. My
hands were shockingly empty, no familiar weight of my painting supplies. They were all gone, likely forgotten in
the back of the taxi in my rush to catch the flight.
A wave of helplessness washed over me when I realized it’s my carelessness that caused this to happen. I
stood frozen, my mind racing through the implications of arriving in New York without my painting supplies.

Years ago, Virginia Squier led a group of middle school students on an educational tour to England.
Accompanying her was her young daughter, Chambers, who was just eight years old at the time.
One evening, near the end of the visit, Squier, Chambers and the school group were on a platform of the
subway and got ready to head to their next destination. It was 5 pm and the station was rather packed. Squier had
been holding Chambers’ hand tightly to keep her close. However, as she momentarily let go to count her students
and ensure everyone was present, a train pulled into the station.
In the chaos of the moment, Chambers, caught up in the flow of the crowd, inadvertently ( 不经意地)
stepped onto the train. Squier only realized what had happened as the train doors began to close. Panic rushed to
Squier as she saw Chambers inside the carriage. Desperately, she tried to board the train to bring Chambers back
out, but it was too late. The doors were shut, and the train began to move, gradually picking up speed.
Squier’s heart raced as she ran alongside the train, her eyes locked on her daughter through the glass
window. Chambers’ face was a picture of fear and confusion, her small fists pounding against the window as she
cried out for her mother. Beside her stood a man dressed. in black leather, his dark glasses adding an air of mystery
— and, to Squier, a sense of dread(恐惧). Her mind raced with unpleasant thoughts about who this man might be
and what his intentions were. As the train disappeared into the tunnel, Squier was left standing on the platform,
paralyzed (使瘫痪) by fear and helplessness.
Fighting back tears, Squier acted quickly and turned to the platform for help. Her voice trembled as she
struggled to convey what had happened. With all that done, she was waiting anxiously.

After an overnight flight, I arrived in Austin, exhausted, to host an event on positive thinking. As I stepped
into the lecture hall, Dr. Gary inquired, “Are you familiar with the Make-A-Wish Foundation?” “Yes,” I responded.
“There’s a 15-year-old boy named Jason. He’s been diagnosed with terminal cancer and has only three days left.
His last wish was to attend your lecture.”
I was stunned, a mix of awe and doubt washing over me. I couldn’t believe it! I’d always assumed that
children, especially those dying ones, would rather go to Disneyland or someplace similar. Why would a kid with
just three days to live choose to spend his final days listening to me, a motivational speaker? My thoughts were
interrupted...
“Hi! Here’s Jason.” Standing before me was a boy wearing a bright red hat to cover his bald head, a result of
extensive treatments. His weak body slightly bent, he said, “I have two goals: to graduate from high school and to
attend your lecture. My doctors didn’t think I could achieve either, considering how weak I am and how little
energy I have.”
Tears welling up in my eyes, I was overcome with emotion. Swiftly, I cleared my throat and smiled, “Thank
you for wanting to be here.” We embraced, smiled, and separated.
Later that afternoon when my lecture started, Jason and his parents showed up. The hall was filled with over
a thousand attendees, all eager to learn, grow, and better themselves. I humbly asked the audience if they were
interested in learning a healing (治愈的) process that could benefit them for a lifetime. From the stage, it seemed as
though everyone had their hands raised high in the air. I demonstrated how to vigorously rub (揉, 搓) their hands
together, separate them by two inches, and sense the healing energy. Then, I paired them up with a partner to feel
the transfer of the healing energy from themselves to another, explaining that everyone has the potential to heal and
support others.

Gayle Nicholls had been a middle school math teacher for over 30 years. His career was like a long and
winding road filled with challenges and joys. In the early years, he struggled to make math interesting to students
who often found it boring. But he never gave up. He used colorful charts, fun games, and real-life examples to
explain complex problems. Over time, he became a beloved figure in the school. His classroom was always filled
with laughter and the sound of eager students asking questions.
One of the most memorable moments was when he helped a shy student named Emily overcome her fear of
math. Emily used to tremble whenever she had to solve a problem on the blackboard. But Gayle was patient. He
encouraged her step by step. One day, when Emily finally solved a difficult problem correctly, the whole class
cheered. From that day on, Emily became more confident, and she even started helping other students. Gayle felt a
deep sense of pride and fulfillment.
Today was different. It was Gayle’s last day before retirement. As he walked into the classroom, he felt a mix
of emotions. The familiar desks, the chalkboard, and the smiling faces of his students all seemed to be saying
goodbye. He took a deep breath and began the lesson as usual, but his heart was heavy. He knew he would miss the
daily interactions with his students and the excitement of seeing them learn and grow.
As the class went on, Gayle could feel the students’ attention more focused than ever. They seemed to sense
that this was a special day. He finished the last problem on the board and turned to the class. “Well, that’s it for
today. And for me, it’s the end of a long journey. I just want to say how much I’ve enjoyed teaching you all. You’ve
made these years truly memorable.”

Why was our neighbor from across the street crazily pounding on our front door at night? She was screaming
for us to open it. We rah lo the door, and she said only one word as she took off running: “FIRE!” Then she let us
know that she had already called 119.
We ran out just as the fire engines raced onto our street. The fire was huge! Flames were shooting wildly out
of the windows and through the roof of the hundred-year-old, three-story house next door. The flames were so tall
that they were visible a few miles away. Our house smelled of smoke. The whole neighborhood smelled of smoke.
My husband raced next door to ensure our neighbors had gotten out. All family members were outside and
safe, including the dog. He ran to the houses on the other street that backed up to the house on fire and banged (猛
敲) on those doors to ensure the neighbors were safe, too. Luckily, they were!
Our street was crowded with fire trucks, eleven in all. One engine had a monster light on it that made the
street bright enough so that it looked like it was high noon on a sunny day. The paramedics ( 救护人员) and
ambulances also came in case they were needed. Thank goodness, they were not. Our house became kind of a “safe
house” with our next-door neighbors coming and going, as needed. It was a safe place for their dog, too.
After around two hours, the fire was completely contained. Amazingly, the house was not a total loss. Most
of it, while smoky and damp, could be saved. And only a few important items were lost. Only two rooms and a
hallway would need to be reconstructed. The rest of the house could be cleaned and aired out.
Everyone was okay. Their gratitude for the firefighters was overwhelming. They couldn’t stop saying
“Thank you.” They expressed their gratitude to us many times for opening our house to them. It was a small thing
for us, but tremendous for them.

It all started with the gift. A few months before I began college, my parents surprised me with the one thing
every young adult desires: a brand new laptop. That summer, I was glued (全神贯注于) to the screen, living in a
digital world. I spent hours on social media, chatting with friends, and ignoring the real one around me. I was more
concerned with the virtual interactions than the actual people and places around me. Being online was more
important than anything else.
So, when I heard my dad’s plan for our family vacation that year, I was less than thrilled. “This year,” he
announced, “we’re going to try something different. We’re going to a farm.”
A farm wasn’t my ideal vacation, but it was still a break from the routine. I went through the packing up and
planning, barely listening to the instructions. My mind was elsewhere, on the Internet, where my conversations
never stopped. I was so absorbed in my digital world that the first time I really paid attention to the real world was
when we get to our destination — a remote farm.
I stared out the window to see the breathtaking views outside. The air coming through the open windows was
warm and carried the fresh smell of the forest. But the view wasn’t what caught my attention. The moment I got off
the car, I rushed into the farmhouse. The real shock came when I tried to check my e-mail and found that I had no
Internet connection.
“We have no Wi-Fi here” a boy said softly. He might be the oldest of the 3 kids on the farm. I looked at him,
too depressed to say anything. My laptop would be completely useless. I would live in the wilderness for a week
with no way to connect to the online world. I was close to tears, afraid of the boredom I had to tolerate in the
coming days.

There is one incident in my life that makes me want to say thank you to the person involved.
My story happened in June, 1975. It began when my family was finally notified that we had successfully met
all the requirements to emigrate (移民) to Canada.
We immediately set about selling our household goods to have enough money to start our life in a new
country.
However, our government only allowed us to use a small portion of the money to pay for the flight tickets.
The rest was required to be sent directly to a bank account in Canada. The only cash we were allowed to take along
with us was $16.
We started our journey. It was the first time my children and I had left our home country, and the first time
we had travelled by plane. We were filled with a mixture of excitement and nervousness. Everything was new to us,
especially the concept of in-flight entertainment. In our home country, we did not yet have access to televisions, so
the thought of watching movies during the flight was thrilling.
However, our excitement quickly turned into disappointment when we realized that headphones were not
provided for free. The stewardess informed us that headphones cost $1 for economy class passengers. My children
looked at me with longing eyes, asking if they could have a dollar for a set of headphones which they intended to
share. Deep down, I knew that we couldn’t afford to spend any of our limited cash on headphones, not even a single
set.
Unwillingly, I explained the situation to my children, preparing for their disappointment and understanding
that they would have to go without headphones for the duration of the flight. My children accepted it without
complaint. But our disappointment must have shown clearly.

Before the COVID pandemic, my Dad always came home late. from work — cleaning pools. Mom t old us
we needed to wait for dinner so all of us could eat together. I didn’t mind. If Dad was late, it meant I could spend
more time outside playing basketball with my brother. Even. though occupied with work, Dad always made time to
show his care. After noticing our love for ball games, he bought us a backboard and hoop ( 篮筐) and hired
someone to install a tall metal pole beside the driveway, giving us our own basketball court.
My brother and I would shoot baskets from morning to night if Mom allowed, but she insisted homework
came first. Still, during the summer months, between part-time jobs like delivering newspapers, cutting lawns, and
helping Dad clean pools, we spent nearly every spare moment on the court. We practiced all sorts of shots and tried
to sharpen our skills by sending the ball through legs, passing it behind our backs, and dribbling (运球) without
looking at the ball. It felt like magic — all the problems of the world seemed to fade away — and I felt like I was
the magician making the magic happen each time I shot the ball toward the basket and watched it fly toward its
destination.
Dad once told me he felt pretty much the same way about cleaning pools. Well, almost the same. It was like
being a magician, he said, turning the water from cloudy to clear so the pool sparkled. It was one of the things Dad
and I shared — the ability to see’ magic in things. Lately, though, it didn’t seem like Dad saw much magic
anywhere. I could tell he was worried when he came home each night. He’d lost more customers due to COVID
and job losses.
One day, I was squeezing my brother to put in another layup when I heard the familiar engine. It was earlier
than usual, and the sky was still bright for a change. “Hey, guys!” Dad said, stepping out. His shoulders slumped

The frightening day of our diving test was here. Our parents thought we were lucky to have an Olympic-size
swimming pool at the school. My mom stressed that the swimming pool was one of the best in our city. But I didn’t
feel happy about it at all. Instead, I felt afraid of the swimming pool. It was mainly because I was terribly shy.
I was so shy that I always sat at the back of the room in class so I’d not be called upon to read. As for the
present physical education class each Monday morning, I would work my way to the back of the line forming at the
diving board so I would not have to practice the dives.
Now, it was another Monday morning - the morning of our diving test. My blood ran cold when the teacher
Ms. Robbins announced that we would be graded for our final on the most difficult dive- the jackknife. And she
added, “This diving test is important. The one who fails has to spare time in the following Monday mornings to
practice diving in this swimming pool and attend this test again.”
My body kept shaking with fear as the line to the scary diving board shortened. As I watched, each student
seemed to perform the challenging dive effortlessly. And shortly I would have to attempt something that I had never
even practiced before.
Then I remembered someone telling me that when you picture yourself doing a skill over and over, it’s just
as effective as physically practicing that skill. So I watched carefully as each classmate jumped at the end of the
board once, added a jump for height, folded their body in half to reach for their toes, and finally straightened out
like an arrow for going into the water. After carefully watching for a while, I was actually in a state of surprise,
because all of a sudden I realized that it was possible for me to perform these four steps of diving.
Eventually all classmates except me finished jumping. The teacher announced that it was my turn.

Ashley ran home from school. Thanksgiving meant four days off. Driving from Ohio to Minnesot a took one
day, so she could spend two whole days with Emily. Ashley hadn’t seen Emily for five months — not since Ashley
had moved to Ohio. It felt like forever.
Over the phone, Emily talked a lot about a girl named Isabella. Was Isabella Emily’s new best friend? No,
Ashley decided. She couldn’t be. Only Ashley knew how to make Emily’s favorite dessert — strawberry-apple pie.
Ashley couldn’t wait to get back to Minnesota. She ran into the living room. “Can I start packing the car? We
said we’d leave by 4:00.”
Mom glanced up from her computer. “There’s a good chance of snow.”
“The forecast must be wrong. I promised Emily I’d come,” Ashley said.
Mom pushed her chair back and sighed, “We’ll hope for good weather but we’ll stop if it snows.”
“I’ll keep my fingers crossed,” Ashley said, “Nothing will go wrong.”
But everything did go wrong. Snow began to fall. Little flakes at first, then big clumps. The freeway had no
place to stop. The windshield wipers (雨刷器) could hardly keep up. Mom pulled into a rest area. “We’ll stay here
until the roads are clear.”
“It’s Thanksgiving. I brought Emily’s favorite pie. She’s counting on me.” Ashley felt her tears welling up in
the eyes.
Mom squeezed (攥紧) Ashley’s hand. “I’m sorry, sweetie. We can eat pie tomorrow.”
“Where will we stay?”
Mum replied, “The rest stop has a hall. We can sleep on the floor. Grab your blanket and pillow. It’ll be fun,
like camping.”
Ashley hurried out of the car and followed close behind Mom. They stumbled into the hall.Ashley stamped
her feet, and snow slipped onto the floor. In the middle of the hall, a man sat between two little boys on a blanket. A
girl sat with her parents on another blanket next to them.
“Hello,” said Mom. “Hi,” said the girl.
“Welcome. Come to share our Thanksgiving dinner,” said the father of the two young boys. He pulled

When Cynthia was a young girl, a screening of Star Wars changed her life. The adorable R2-D2 in the
movie inspired her dream of creating a robot friend.
College was a challenging start. She struggled with difficult engineering courses and failed a robotics exam.
Instead of giving up, she spent countless nights in the library, devoted to her studies. Eventually, she graduated with
an engineering degree.
After graduation, she joined a team under a famous robotics professor to develop a planet-exploring robot.
They faced numerous difficulties, especially disagreements within the team on the design. Cynthia firmly insisted
on her ideas and finally, they overcame the barriers. However, when the robot was completed, Cynthia realized it
lacked the function of companionship she had pictured.
Determined to create a truly friendly robot, Cynthia focused on a project for hospitalized children. She
visited local hospitals, had in-depth discussions with medical staff and consulted several child psychologists. These
experts shared their insights on children’s emotional needs during hospitalization, such as the importance of
consistent companionship and the role of positive distractions (分心的事物). Equipped with them, Cynthia began
the creation of Huggable, a teddy-bear-shaped robot.
During its development, Cynthia faced financial shortages. She spent months presenting her project to
various investors, suffering countless rejections. But her passion and determination paid off when a local tech-
enthusiast learned about her vision and provided the necessary funds. A partner’s departure also left her short-
handed, but she reached out to former classmates and brought in a new, devoted team member. Now, Huggable is in
a local children’s hospital, bringing comfort to young patients.
However, as Huggable’s influence grew, so did controversy (争议). Some people worried that relying too
much on a robot for comfort might affect children s normal emotional and social development. They argued that
children needed real-human interaction to learn communication skills. Articles and comments against Huggable
started appearing on the Internet. Soon, the hospital received calls from concerned parents, demanding an
explanation.

He had finally allowed it. Today, for the first time, I was shopping on my own.
It felt like a small victory, but to me, it meant everything. Ever since I tuned fourteen last month, I had been
begging my dad to let me go places alone. I wasn’t a little kid anymore — I could handle myself. But my dad, who
had always been overprotective, wasn’t convinced. He said the world wasn’t as safe as I thought, that there were
dangers I wasn’t ready for. Maybe it was because I was his only child, or may be it was because of the time I got
lost at the county fair when I was seven, sending him into a full-blown panic. I had only been missing for twenty
minutes, but to him, it felt like hours. He never let me out of his sight after that.
But I was older now. I needed my independence.
This morning, after weeks of pleading, he had finally relented. With a sigh, he pulled a crisp twenty-dollar
bill from his wallet and handed it to me.
“Call me if you need anything,” he had said, his brow furrowed in concern.
“I’ll be fine, Dad,” I had replied, rolling my eyes but secretly thrilled.
Now, as I wandered through the aisles (过道) of Walmart, I felt a rush of independence. I lingered (逗留) in
the beauty section, picking up different bottles of shampoo, comparing labels, and enjoying the simple pleasure of
making my own choices. No one was there to hurry me along or tell me what to buy. I was free, and it felt amazing.
Then, out of nowhere, a woman hurried toward me. She looked to be in her forties, with short, dark hair and
a worried expression.
“I don’t mean to scare you,” she said in a hushed voice, “but there’s a man following you. He’s been peeking

It was a freezing winter day. Alex, a high school senior, was on his way home from the library. With his final
exams approaching, he had been buried in books for hours, trying to absorb as much knowledge as possible. As he
walked along the quiet street, the cold wind blew at his face, making his ears red.
Suddenly, a strange noise caught his attention. It seemed to come from an alley between two old buildings.
Curiosity getting the better of him, Alex decided to check it out. When he stepped into the dark and narrow alley, he
saw a small figure hidden in the corner. It was a young boy, no more than ten years old, wearing poor clothes that
were far too thin for the cold weather.
“Hey, are you okay?” Alex asked, approaching the boy slowly. The boy looked up, his eyes filled with fear
and hesitation. He nodded slightly but said nothing. Alex noticed that the boy was shaking uncontrollably. Without
thinking, he took off his thick coat and wrapped it around the boy. “Here, put this on. It’ll keep you warm,” Alex
said with a warm smile.
The boy looked at Alex in surprise, as if he couldn’t believe someone would be so kind to him. “Thank you,”
he said in a low voice. Alex sat down beside the boy and started to talk to him. He learned the boy’s name was Ben,
and that he had run away from home because he had a big argument with his parents. Ben was too scared to call his
parents and had been wandering the streets for a day.
Alex’s heart ached for the little boy. He knew he couldn’t just leave Ben there. But he also had his own

Li Ming was a 17-year-old exchange student from China. With a heart full of dreams and a little bit of
nervousness, he flew to the United Kingdom to start a new adventure. He had always imagined what it would be
like to walk through the historic streets of England and meet people from different parts of the world. But as soon
as he arrived at his new school, he felt a little unsure.
In his new class, Li Ming struggled to start conversations with his British classmates. They spoke so quickly
and used words and phrases he didn't understand. When he tried to join their conversations, he felt shy about his
accent and worried that he might say something wrong. He also noticed that British students seemed to value their
personal space more than he was used to, which made it even harder for him to find the right moment to start a
meaningful talk.
Group work was even harder. During a group project in literature class, Li Ming had trouble explaining his
ideas clearly, feeling like his ideas were getting lost in translation. And he started to
doubt himself.
Social events outside of class were just as difficult. At a school party, Li Ming watched his classmates laugh,
dance, and sing along to the latest pop songs. He felt left out, not knowing the songs or the dance moves. He
wanted to join the fun, but the fear of looking silly kept him on the sidelines.
One day, the school announced a talent show, Li Ming, who practiced traditional Chinese kung fu, really

I was really starving when I stepped out of the city library after an entire afternoon buried in books. Then I
smelt something delicious—the hot dog stand at the street corner.
“One hot dog, please!” I nearly rushed to the stand.
“OK, ready soon!” The vendor (摊主) replied cheerfully. As he handed me the hot dog, he grinned, “You
deserve the best hot dog in the world!” I guessed that was the slogan for his little business, for the words were
painted in cheerful yellow letters on his cart.
I couldn’t wait to take a bite. The warm bread, the chilli sauce and the juice in the sausage — it was the best
thing in the world! Definitely at that time!
“Five dollars, young lady,” the vendor said, wiping his hands on his apron.
Hot dog in one hand, I reached for my wallet with the other. Just then, “Ouch!” a cry came from behind me. I
turned back and found a woman in her 50’s struggling to pick herself up from the ground. Her grocery bag split
open with oranges rolling in every direction.
Seeing this, I stuffed the rest of the hot dog into my mouth, picked up the oranges and put them back into her
bag. “Are you okay?” I asked with concern.
“Thank you. I didn’t see the pole on the ground,” she breathed. Noticing her hand was wounded, I
remembered the Band-Aid(创可贴)in my bag and dug it out. “Thank you so much for your kindness,” the woman
said as I carefully applied it to her wound. Across the street, the bus I was about to take was pulling in. Waving a
goodbye to the woman, I dashed to the bus stop and barely got aboard before the door closed.
As the bus pulled away, I saw the woman bought a hot dog from the same vendor. On the way, I was always
wondering if she would be greeted with the same words, “You deserve the best hot dog in the world!” I was lost in
it...

It was the day Yollie got her graduation certificate of Baylor College of Medicine. Her dream finally came
true. She took out an old greyish dress from her suitcase, her mind flooded by memories of the days when her
mother saved money for her education.
Yollie’s mother, Mrs Moreno, was a woman with a unique sense of humor. As a single mother, she supported
the family by working at the local market. She didn’t earn much money, but she was always positive and had her
own way to provide for Yollie and at the same time saved as much money as possible. Her ways were not always
clever ones, though, among which an embarrassing one stood out in Yollie’s memory.
Yollie was a smart kid at Saint Theresa’s High School. She was the winner of the school’s spelling bees. Mrs
Moreno encouraged her daughter to study hard, hoping Yollie would realize her dream of becoming a doctor one
day. She provided Yollie with a desk, typewriter, and a lamp to protect her eyes from long hours of studying.
One day, Yollie needed a new black outfit for the eighth-grade fall dance, but unluckily, their old car had
already cost them nearly a hundred dollars in repairs. Mrs Moreno didn’t have much to spend on the outfit so she
decided to buy Yollie a pair of black shoes and fabric dye (染料) to turn her white summer dress black.
At first Yollie doubted her mother’s idea. However, to her surprise, the dress turned out shiny and
sophisticated (精致的) after being dyed. She was excited to go to the dance. The dance was romantic, with paper
lanterns swinging in the trees and creating a scene straight out of a movie. Yollie enjoyed dancing with her friends
under the lanterns until rain began to fall. Disaster struck when Yollie’s dyed dress started to leak black dye, ruining
her outfit. In embarrassment, she ran home through the storm.

The Popsicle Kids
A nearly empty box of Popsicles (棒冰) in the freezer, left from a grandchild’s visit, caught my attention.
Initially, I wanted to throw it away, but my wife suggested we give the remaining Popsicles to the neighborhood
children. Her suggestion changed our life and led us to a future full of “Popsicle Kids.” My wife and I, retired on
Social Security, live in an apartment complex. After careers in sales and nursing, our daily concerns revolved
around aches, pains, and dinner. We often wondered what good we were to the world.
That changed dramatically after we gave away the first Popsicle.
Minutes after watching a neighbor boy, a second grader, walk away with an icy treat, our doorbell rang. An
adorable blond girl, about six, smiled sweetly, “Is it true you’re giving away Popsicles?”
With the box empty, we returned to our concerns.
Early the next morning, the doorbell rang repeatedly. Standing on our porch were the four children from the
previous day. They vocalized their wants, chanting (有节奏地喊), “We want Popsicles! We want Popsicles!”
Looking into their eager young faces, I wondered, “What have I started?” Sensing a victory, they nodded
eagerly when I explained the rules: ring the bell once, one Popsicle per day, and share something good about their
day. But their thin shoulders bent downwards in disappointment when I mentioned they had to give something in
return. I came to the rescue, suggesting they share something positive about their day, like what they learned at
school or helping another student. Over time, new rules were added: “Ladies first,” “Don’t interrupt,” and
“Properly get rid of the sticks.”
On holidays, they expressed their understanding of why the day was celebrated. Over the years, about fifty
youngsters visited. Some became part of my life, like the four kids who joined me on the steps one spring to read
“Where the Red Fern Grows.” We discussed catching crawfish, loving pets, and family relationships. This simple
act of sharing Popsicles transformed our life, bringing joy and meaning to both the children and ourselves.

During the holiday, Lily went to stay with her grandmother in the countryside. Her grandmother’s house was
a simple cottage with a small yard, where an old cow named Daisy lived. Daisy was gentle and always seemed to
understand when Lily talked to her. Lily loved visiting her grandmother, but she had never taken care of the
animals alone before.
One morning, Lily found her grandmother lying in bed, looking pale. “Grandma, what’s wrong?” Lily asked,
her voice filled with worry.
“I’m not feeling well, dear,” her grandmother replied softly. “I think I need to rest today. Can you take care
of Daisy for me?”
Lily nodded, feeling a mix of excitement and nervousness. “Don’t worry, Grandma. I’ll look after her.”
Lily went outside to the yard. The morning was bright and sunny, but the air was cool. She found Daisy
standing by the fence and looking at her with soft, trusting eyes. “Hey, Daisy,” Lily said, patting the cow’s head
gently. “I’ll take care of you today.”
Lily brought Daisy some fresh hay and watched as the cow ate it slowly. She felt a sense of pride as Daisy
seemed to enjoy the food. But as the morning turned into afternoon, the sky suddenly darkened. A storm was
coming.
The wind picked up, and the first drops of rain began to fall. Lily could see Daisy starting to look anxious.
She knew cows could get scared during storms. “It’s okay, Daisy,” Lily said, trying to sound calm. “Let me get you
inside.”
She led Daisy into the barn (畜棚), but the cow kept mooing (哞哞叫) nervously. Lily’s heart raced. She had

Mrs. Thompson had been a middle school math teacher for over 30 years. Her classroom was always warm,
even in winter. Most important of all, she was well-known for her insightful advice and genuine willingness to help
her students. Many of us often turned to her for guidance.
I once was extremely troubled and felt uncertain about myself after I kept failing the math exams. One day, I
decided to knock on her door.
“Mrs. Thompson, I have been trying my best,” I said, with my eyes fixing on the floor. “But I just feel that I
am stuck.”
I explained what I had done for my last math test, and told her my anxiety about the upcoming college
examination.
“My friends seem to advance effortlessly through their studies,” I added. “But I’m struggling to survive. The
fear that I’m falling behind only deepens my sense of hopelessness.”
Mrs. Thompson listened with patience. After I finished, she handed me a seedling (苗) in a pot. “Let’s plant
this in the garden,” she said gently. “Water it every day and make sure it gets enough sunlight. Please don’t focus
on its progress. Just trust that it’s growing.”
We took it to the garden in the school and planted it in a clearing so that it could get enough sunlight. Every
day after school, I faithfully watered the little plant but resisted the urge to look for some signs that my efforts were
making a difference.
A few weeks later, a tiny yellow flower caught my attention when I bent to water it. It was so pretty in the
fading sunlight that I flew to Mrs. Thompson’s office and told her the good news.

Lily stood by the window, watching the heavy rain pour down. The raindrops ran down the glass in lines,
creating a rhythmic pattern that matched her growing restlessness. The outside world seemed so inviting, but she
was stuck inside. With a sigh ( 叹息), she turned to her mom, who was busy folding laundry. “Mom, can I go
outside to play?”
Her mom didn’t even look up, continuing her task as the washing machine made a noise in the background.
“No, sweetheart, it’s pouring out there. You’ll get wet.” Lily’s lip pushed out slightly as she felt disappointment
grow inside her. “Then can we play a game instead? The new board game we got looks so fun.” Her mom gave a
small shake of her head. “Not right now, honey. I still have a lot to finish up. Maybe later.”
Feeling more upset with each “no”, Lily glanced around the room and noticed her mom ironing clothes. The
sound of the iron releasing steam was surprisingly relaxing, and she couldn’t help but watch, curious about how the
hot metal moved smoothly over the fabric. “Mom, can I help you with the ironing?” she asked, stepping closer.
“No, Lily,” her mom replied firmly without even looking at her. “I don’t want you anywhere near the iron.” Lily
felt a sudden urge to try. “I’ll be really careful. I promise.” Her mom stopped and then met her look with a serious
expression. “No, sweetie. This iron gets very hot. Just last week, little Timmy next door burned his hand with one. I
don’t want you to get hurt.”
Lily stood there, feeling a mix of curiosity and frustration. The iron sat quietly on the board, the steam now
gone. She could almost picture herself using it, but her mom’s warning stayed in her mind. Lily knew her mom was
just trying to keep her safe, but the constant “no” made her feel upset and misunderstood. She stared at the shiny

Tyler walked out of the front door and saw Grandpa wrapping a gray scarf around his neck and putting on
his red hat there. “I do hope I can meet the neighbors on such a cold day,” said Grandpa.
Since Grandma died, Grandpa still walked along the same route every day as they had done before and the
neighbors had become so used to his presence, especially his red hat, that they usually greeted Grandpa even when
he did not see them. When Grandpa and Tyler turned a corner, they saw an old man wearing a black hat and scarf.
“Hi, Henry,” Grandpa said. “I don’t see you out much these days.”
“My doctor suggests I take walks for my health, but I really don’t want to get out,” Henry complained and
pulled his scarf up over his mouth and nose. “It’s still autumn, but it feels like the dead of winter.”
Suddenly, a strong wind blew off both men’s hats, which flew toward a nearby pond. Tyler ran after the hats
and grabbed Grandpa’s just in time, while Henry’s went into the pond. He fished it out of the water and returned it
to Henry.
“It’s wet. Just throw it away. I’ll have to buy a new one,” Henry said coldly and walked away. Henry seemed
very lonely and was in a bad mood since his wife passed away recently.
