Last summer, Hilda worked as a volunteer with dolphin trainers at a sea life park. Her job was to make sure
the tanks were free of any items so that the trainers could train the dolphins to fetch specific items. However, one
day after cleaning, one of the dolphins, Maya, presented Hilda with a candy wrapper from the tank. When
Katherine, the trainer, saw this, she blamed Hilda for her carelessness. Upset but not discouraged by this event,
Hilda decided to do some spying on Maya.
The next morning, Hilda arrived at the park early. She put on her scuba gear (水下呼吸器) and jumped into
the tank for her usual, underwater sweep. Finding nothing in the tank, she climbed out of the water just in time to
see Katherine jumping in on the other side. After what happened yesterday, Hilda knew what she was doing. She
watched as Katherine performed her underwater search, but Hilda wasn’t surprised when she surfaced empty-
handed.
During the tank sweeps, Maya had been swimming playfully, but now the dolphin stopped suddenly and swam
to the back part of the tank where the filter (过滤) box was located. She stuck her nose down behind the box and
then swam away. What was Maya doing back there? Hilda wondered. She jumped back into the water and swam
over to take a look behind the box, and her question was answered. Hilda then swam across the tank following
Maya’s path and emerged from the water to find Katherine removing her scuba gear. As Katherine turned around,
her mouth dropped open. There was Maya at the edge of the tank with a comb (梳子) in her mouth waiting for her
treat.
“Maya! Where did you get that?” demanded Katherine, taking the comb and throwing her a fish. “I know
where she got it,” declared Hilda climbing out of the tank with a handful of items still wet from their watery, restingplace. “What’s all this?” Katherine asked, obviously confused.

1.【2024届甘肃省白银市高三上学期联考一模英语试题】
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
One morning this summer holiday, I was running on the road when I saw an elderly foreign lady waving her
phone at me, speaking to me in a foreign language. Obviously, she didn’t speak English at all. When I listened to
her more carefully, I found she was speaking German. She was clearly lost and trying to walk to the house where
she lived. She showed me screen shots of maps on her phone as if she wanted me to help her find her way home.
Actually, I learned some German in my spare time because our school will have German classes the next term.
However, I was so poor at it that it was almost useless in practice.
I studied nearby and I knew my classmate, Lisa, who was good at speaking German. So I decided to telephone
her. “Hi, Lisa. I came across a German lady. Do you have time to come and act as a translator now?” I said and then
sent her my location, Unfortunately, Lisa answered, “Sorry, Belle. I’m shopping now. I can reach your place inabout half an hour.” Hearing that, I had to tell her that I could manage myself.
Suddenly, an idea flashed through my mind. I downloaded a translation app and used the voice function to
translate what the lady said into English. Just in this way, I learned that she came here to visit her daughter who was
new to the city to teach. And I also determined the address she needed to get to. It was not far from here to her
house, so I offered to walk with her to her destination. She was greatly grateful to me and kept saying sorry for
taking my time.
When we got to the house, her daughter just came back. She was as touched by my kindness as her mother. I
kept reminding her that it was no trouble for me, and that I only intend-ed to make sure her mother got there safely.
Walking with the lady was more rewarding than running alone. Despite having to rely on technology to
communicate due to the language barrier, I felt lucky to have been able to help her. When I left, I couldn’t wait to
share the wonderful experience with Lisa.

The Christmas I will never forget happened when I was 9. I believed in Santa with all my heart. How could Inot when I received everything I wished for.
On December 1st, Mum would announce, It's time. Hearing those words, we all knew it was time to write our
letters to Santa. One day I asked Mum why we always wrote our letters on December 1st. She said because so
many kids were writing letters to Santa, he needed time to read them and make all the toys the kids wanted. Once
our letters were finished, Mum would put them in her purse and mail them the next day.
Christmas Eve finally arrived. We were all so excited. We did our Christmas Eve traditions. Daddy read us
“The Night Before Christmas” story. Then it was time for sleep. I had such a good feeling about Christmas this
year. It was difficult to fall asleep. But sleep finally came and so did Christmas morning. I woke up hearing my
brothers yelling. Jimmy came running and jumping on my bed. “Santa's been here, sister! Let's open presents!”
We ran down the stairs. Our eyes were glowing like wildfire as we eyed over the presents under the tree. My
brothers and I quickly snuggled (依偎)among the packages. We all watched as each person unwrapped a gift. I kept
watching as my brothers unwrapped gifts. My dad didn't hand me any package. “This year you are going to be the
last to get your presents because you are the oldest,” he declared. I didn't think anything of it, so I whispered “OK.”
One by one all of the packages had been opened. There was none left. I couldn't understand. I had been so
good this year. Tears began sliding down my cheeks. I ran up to my room. My mum went up the stairs for me to
come back down. Dad wanted to talk to me. Sobbing, I slowly made me way back.

I’ll call him Pete because I didn’t take the time to ask his name. A nameless hero who found his way into my
heart.
I had taken Robert, my eight-year-old son, to a restaurant to celebrate his birthday. Lil’ Bob, we called Robert,
wore his brand-new cowboy boots into the hall, his face shining with pride and joy. This was Lil’ Bob’s special day.
We approached the counter, where Pete greeted us with a clear warmth. His brown eyes twinkled with
kindness.
“Welcome,” he said with a smile. “Wow, you look happy, little fellow.” Pete brought his face close to Lil’
Bob’s level.
“I got cowboy boots,” Lil’ Bob boasted. “I picked them out myself.” Lil’ Bob lifted his right foot in the air so
Pete could see the hand-stitched leather.
“Those boots look amazing, like fresh leather,” Pete said. He opened his eyes and looked directly into Lil’
Bob’s eyes. “Thank you for sharing your treasure with me.”
Lil’ Bob laughed happily at Pete’s reaction. Then, Pete returned to the register.
“What does the birthday boy want to drink? It’s on me,” Pete offered.
Lil’ Bob shuffled back and forth in excitement since soda was a rare treat in our home. Now, he could order
any soda he wanted. Lil’ Bob considered the many possibilities, taking more time than a fast-food customer should.
Eventually, he settled on root beer.
“Excellent choice, my friend. It’s what I would have picked myself.”
Pete’s confirmation brought a massive smile to Lil’ Bob’s face. We ordered our meals and watched as Pete
assembled the drinks and food on the tray (托盘) before us. When everything was on it, I reached for the tray, but
Pete said, “Let me carry it out for you.” Pete followed us to the hall as the birthday boy took a considerable amount
of time picking the perfect table. Pete patiently held our tray until we were seated.

Tom was working in a big company. He had been on the road visiting people for more than a month without
going home. He couldn’t wait to get back to see his wife and children. It was coming up on Mother’s Day, and he
usually tried to make it “back home”, but this year he was just too busy and too tired. The day when he was driving
in a small town, he saw a flower shop. He said to himself, “I know what I will do. I’ll send my mother some roses.”
He stopped and went into the flower shop and saw a young boy talking to the girl in it. “How many roses can I
get for five dollars, Ms.?” the boy asked. The girl was trying to explain that roses were expensive. Maybe the young
boy would be happy with something else.
“No, I have to have roses,” he said, “My mum was badly sick last year and there isn’t much time left for her. I
want to get something special. It has to be red roses, because that is her favorite.” He was stubborn.
The girl in the shop looked up at Tom and was just shaking her head. Something inside of Tom was touched by
the boy’s voice. He wanted to get those roses so badly. Tom had been blessed in his business, and he looked at the
girl and silently said that he would pay for the boy’s roses.
The girl looked at the young man and said, “OK, I will give you a dozen red roses for your dollars.” The
young boy almost jumped into the air. He took the flowers and ran down the store. It was worth more than fifty
dollars just to see that kind of excitement.
Tom ordered his own flowers and asked the girl to have it delivered to his mother. After that, with a relief he
drove down the road. Not long after his driving, he saw the boy walking to a hospital nearby.注意:

We were very poor. To help support the family, Grandma would go to the mountains to dig wild vegetables,
and then sell them. In this way, Grandma had to spend the whole day in the mountains. After she came back from
collecting a lot of wild vegetables, she had to pick them until late night. Early in the morning, my grandma would
take the vegetables, walk through the mountain road, and go to the market to sell them.
I hated Grandma digging wild vegetables all day long, because as soon as I finished my homework, I had to
help her pick vegetables. And this dirty work often made my fingers black. In that case, no matter how hard I
washed my hands, the dirty black color couldn’t be washed away, which made me very upset. My grandma noticed
I hated the black color so much; she once suggested using bleach and iron filings (漂白剂和铁屑). It worked.
However, it really hurt so I refused to try them again.
One day, something unexpected happened.“Everyone, you need to invite your parents to school. OK?” the teacher said to us, “the school requires
students to bring your parents to school, mainly to discuss your school work.”
Of course it didn’t matter to other classmates, but I… Grandma was the only one who could come to school
with me, Hearing what the teacher said, I sighed (叹气) helplessly, “Oh…” The worn-out clothes, the slightly
hunched (弓背的) back, and the most terrible thing was the dirty black color on Grandma’s fingers!
I couldn’t tell how worried and frightened I was and I didn’t know what to do. Anyway, I didn’t want the
teacher to see the color of my grandma’s fingers. I came home with an unhappy face and said hesitantly (犹豫地):
“Well, Grandma, the teacher asked parents to go to school tomorrow.”

The first of June, the King family was going on holiday tomorrow. The girls no longer had to do housework
for the family, so there would be three months’ free time for them, and all the girls cheered up, jumping up and
down with excitement. “Vacation, finally!” shouted Meg, coming home to find Jo already lying on the sofa. They
started to plan what they would do on the vacation. All the girls reached an agreement that they would not do
anything for a while, but play all the time and rest if their mother didn’t mind. “May we all try what we want to do,
Mother?” asked Meg. Mrs March agreed to the plan and said they could try the experiment for a week. “It will be
wonderful, I’m sure,” said Meg. “Fun forever, and no work!” cried Jo.
The next morning, Meg spent the morning with a friend and the afternoon reading in the apple tree. Jo pulledall her toys out of her closet but then left them to play some music. Amy put on her best dress and went outside to
draw, hoping someone would notice the beautiful young artist. No one appeared, so she went for a walk, got caught
in the rain, and came home dripping.
In the evening, they all assured their mother the experiment was going well. She smiled, said nothing, and did
her work, keeping their home pleasant and running smoothly.
The week seemed to get longer and longer with nothing much to do, and it affected all three girls. Meg found
time hanging heavily and read till her eyes hurt and she was sick of books. Jo sometimes suddenly shook her doll
and shouted at it. Amy was quite bored, for she didn’t like dolls or reading, and she couldn’t draw all the time. By
Friday the girls were glad that it was nearly over, but no one would admit that they were tired of the experiment.
On Saturday morning, the girls got up to find no breakfast and no mother to be seen.

Love is a road that goes both ways. Once upon a time, a little boy named David lived with his mother in a
remote and small cottage. They couldn’t afford to live a luxurious life, but were satisfied with the little they had.
Every day after coming home from school, David would accompany his mother to the forest to collect what they
need, such as wood, wild vegetable, fungi, and so on.One day, when David was in the forest by himself, he came across a puppy which seemed to be all alone.
David looked here and there for its owner but in vain. So he picked it up, put it under his coat and carried it home.
Reaching home, he said to his mother, “Mom, I found a little puppy alone in the forest! Can we keep him, please?”
Feeling David’s excitement, his mother was in two minds about whether to keep the puppy or not. She told him,
“Oh, David, that’s the cutest puppy I’ve ever seen! But we don’t have much. What will we do about his food and
sleeping arrangement?” David replied, “It’s OK. Ill offer him half of my meals and let him sleep with me in my
bedroom.” Hearing this, David’s mother just nodded. David’s happiness knew no bounds, and he named the puppy
Cookie.
From that day onwards, David and Cookie became the best friends. Cookie followed David wherever he went.
When David went to school, Cookie would patiently wait outside the classroom till the classes ended. At night,
Cookie slept next to David on his tiny bed and dreamed sweet dreams.
One day, Cookie and David went to school together as usual. After school, they were following the familiar
routine back home when it rained heavily with thunder and lightning, so that they were running in a hurry, trying to
reach home as soon as possible. The roads everywhere turned slippery. Unfortunately, David missed seeing a hole
at the side of the road and fell down the hole. He cried for help, hoping to be heard by passers-by. But due to the
loud thundering and noise of the heavy rain, no one could hear him. Cookie barked loudly and anxiously, circling

Lily was renowned for her desire to achieve perfection in everything she undertook. Whether it was school
projects, art assignments, or even helping her parents with household chores, Lily’s commitment to excellence was
unwavering.
One sunny summer day, Lily’s family decided to spend a day at the beach. As they arrived, Lily’s eyes were
immediately drawn by a group of children who playfully built and then tore down their sandcastles. They giggled
and shouted, their excitement on full display. “How silly, ” she thought, not quite getting why they enjoyed doing
that.
Lily, being herself, decided to build a perfect sandcastle that would become the envy of all beachgoers. She
began to plan every detail in her mind, from the balanced structures of the towers to the delicate decorations. Then,
she set about piling sand to make the towers and walls of her sandcastle. Painstakingly, she crafted each feature of
her work, carefully smoothed the surfaces and adjusting every detail to her vision.
Jake, Lily’s younger brother, didn’t seem too concerned with building a fantastic sandcastle. He picked a spot
nearby and amused himself with the sand. He scooped up handfuls of sand, let it slip through his fingers like grains
of time, and then molded it into careless shapes with the carefree abandon of a child. Jake’s happiness was
contagious. Mom and Dad joined him, laughing and joking over Jake’s playful creations. From time to time, they
called out to Lily and invited her to join the fun, knowing that the pursuit of perfection could be exhausting.
Nevertheless, Lily stayed where she was, determined to create an impressive sandcastle. She frowned at Jake’s
unconventional, abstract art-like sandcastle shapes and persisted in her efforts. However, the process didn’t go as
smoothly as she had anticipated. The sand didn’t always hold its shape, and the waves constantly lapped at the
edges of her creation.

Mike, my cousin, and I are very close and would share any secret with each other. He is a little naught (顽皮

Last summer, I went to Los Angeles to visit him. My uncle chatted with us outside while he was smoking. And

smoking it when he came back.
Mike was curious to see what smoking was really like, so he picked up the cigarette to check it out. He held it

said in a loud voice. “Never let my dad know about it, or he’ll beat me up,” he said. I couldn’t believe what he did

What makes a home? Love, sympathy and confidence. It is a place where kindly affections exist among all the
members of the family. The parents take good care of their children, and the children are interested in the activities
of their parents. Thus all of them are bound together by affection, and they find their home the happiest place in the
world.
But for me, sometimes I can’t feel the love from my mother and can’t feel the warmth of the home Quarrels
happen between us frequently.
“Bang!” The door caused a protest. “Never set foot in this house again!” shouted Mom. With tears welling up
in my eyes, I rushed out of the house and ran along the street.
A young mother who held a child in her arms walked past me. I felt as if I saw my childhood: happy and
harmonious.
But then I didn’t know whether it was because I had grown up or because Mom was getting old. We were just
like two people coming from two different worlds. It felt like there was an iron door between us that could never be
opened.
I wandered in the street, without a destination in my mind. My heart was frozen on this hot summer night.
After wandering aimlessly in the street for hours, I felt really hungry and wanted something to eat However. with
no money in hand, I could do nothing but weep and sigh. A grandma, who was a snack seller at the roadside noticed

grateful tears hanging in my eyes, I accepted the noodles and kept expressing my gratitude. “Thank you so much! I

There is a story from many years ago of a primary school teacher. Her name was Rose.
On the first day of school, as Rose looked out over her new fifth grade class, her attention was immediately
drawn to two boys, Mark and Charlie. Mark had a high energy that filled the room, his voice echoing even in casual
conversations. He laughed loudest and answered questions with enthusiasm that was impossible to ignore. Charlie,
Mark’s partner-in-crime, had a naughty grin and a twinkle in his eyes. Together, they were perfect.
While Mark would com mand attention with his tales, Charlie would comment cleverly, making the whole
class burst into laughter. Rose could already tell that these two would keep her on her toes. She smiled to herself,
though, ready for an eventful year ahead. She knew she had to find a way to channel their energy positively, turning
their enthusiasm into a driving force for learning.
One day, Rose had a unique assignment for her students. She asked them to list each classmate's name on two
sheets, leaving gaps between. Next, she instructed them to write down the nicest thing they could think of for each
student. The assignment consumed the whole period. As they left, each student handed in their papers.
Over the weekend, Rose wrote down the name of each student on a separate sheet of paper, creating individual
lists for every student. On Monday, she handed out the lists. Soon, happiness spread across the room. Mark, known
for his naughty behavior, looked astonished. “I had no idea I mattered to anyone,” he whispered, visibly moved.
Beside him, Charlie, Mark’s partner- in-crime, said similarly.“I never realized others thought so highly of me.”
No one ever mentioned those lists in class again. Rose never found out if they discussed them after class or
